Anatomists are regarded as custodians of cadaveric material donated to science. Almost every facet of medical science has experienced explosive advances. This has impacted directly on anatomists and their role. Increasingly, anatomists are raising concerns with regard to the treatment of human tissue (Jones,2002, Clin. Anat. 15:436-440). The Korperwelten (Bodyworlds) of Gunther von Hagens et al. (1987, Anat. Embryol. 175:411-421) has evoked considerable debate about the treatment of human cadavers. Thus far clinical anatomists have had little role to play in policy formulation, legislation, an

Carl Florian Toldt was an Austrian anatomist who made meaningful contributions worldwide and defined what is one of the most important surgical landmarks in abdominal surgery. Through his research studies, the embryologic dissection plane known as the "White Line of Toldt" represents an important anatomical landmark that helps to mobilize either the ascending or descending colon. His career spanned over 45 years, beginning in Verona and continuing to Prague and Vienna. He was an author of several innovative books and scientific articles regarding micro- and macroscopic anatomy. In addition, he

Friedrich-Christian Rosenthal was a prominent German anatomist and surgeon. He was born in Greifswald, Germany on June 3, 1780. In his time, he was best known for his work on the olfactory system and ichthyology. However, his late work also led to his description of the eponymous canal in the cochlea and basal cerebral vein. After an itinerant academic, military, and professional career, he died of tuberculosis in Greifswald on December 5, 1829, working to the end on an unfinished treatise on the anatomy of the brain and cranial nerves.

A review of laboratory and morphologic methods currently used to study tissues in diseases caused by viruses, bacteria, mycoplasmas, fungi, and protozoa. Special attention is given to cytologic examination of smears and scrapings from viscera whereby valuable information that should be included in the death certificate can be obtained before histologic sections have been prepared and the laboratory examination has been completed.

Václav Treitz (1819-1872), the Czech surgeon-anatomist who described in 1853 the eponymous fibromuscular band that suspends the fourth portion of the duodenum from the right crus of the diaphragm, was a partisan for Bohemian independence from its historical subjugation under the Austrian Empire. As a professor of pathological anatomy at the Charles-Ferdinand University in Prague, he insisted on his right to teach in Czech, the mother tongue of his students and their future patients, and not German, the official language of higher learning and government. Treitz was thus targeted as a troublema

The parathyroid gland was first recognized in 1850 by Richard Owen during a dissection of an Indian rhinoceros at the London Zoo. The credit for the discovery of the parathyroid has, however, been given to the Uppsala anatomist Ivar Sandström, who was the first to demonstrate the gland in man. His dissection studies were undertaken between 1877 and 1880, when he still was a medical student in Uppsala. Sandström's detailed anatomical and histological studies of the parathyroid gland were published in a Swedish journal, "Upsala Läkareförenings förhandlingar", in 1880. Ivar Sandström, the man beh

Christopher Addison enjoyed two careers, one as an anatomist followed by that as a politician. He described the detailed topographical anatomy of the abdomen, and his name is associated with one of its key anatomical planes. His political career was influenced by his commitment to social reform and for the need for improvement in public health achieved through government intervention. He held several ministerial offices, and he was the first Minister for Health. He played important roles in the passage of the National Insurance Act 1911 and introduced the Housing and Town Planning Act 1919. Fo

BACKGROUND: Applying pressure to key points proximal to craniofacial arteries can arrest bleeding in first aid, but precise locations are poorly defined. This study investigates the precise pressure points within the craniofacial region.
METHODS: The authors retrospectively reviewed CTA scans from 201 adults, 3D postprocessed in HOROS. The facial, superficial temporal, occipital, transverse facial, and posterior auricular arteries were analyzed. Three coordinate systems-anchored at the angulus oris, the porus acusticus externus, and the external occipital protuberance-were used to map the opt

In the field of anatomy education, the debate over the superiority of learning with or without human donors is decades long and ongoing. Arguments for or against the use of human donors in anatomy education vary, depending on the healthcare discipline. Physical therapy programs have been particularly resistant to the trend away from the use of human donors. In this personal view, I present my history of anatomy education and how my perspectives on teaching and learning anatomy have changed dramatically throughout my teaching experiences. The purpose of this article is to support instructors wh

The writer Georg Büchner (1813-1837) is considered one of the giants of German literature. Comparatively less well known, however, is the fact that Büchner was also a gifted neuroanatomist who completed his medical studies with a dissertation on the nervous system of the barbel (a freshwater fish with a high incidence in the River Rhine) and gave a lecture on cranial nerves shortly afterward, hoping to secure a position at the University of Zurich. In the copious secondary literature on Büchner, it has often been discussed whether and how his poetic and scientific writings were interrelated. I

Giovanni Maria Lancisi (1654-1720) was an Italian physician who made significant contributions to many fields of medicine. De subitaneis mortibus was the first autoptic manuscript, suggesting that myocardial disease was a factor in a 1706 sudden death epidemic in Rome. His book De motu cordis et aneurysmatibus described the pathology and etiology of aneurysms, and Tractatus de urinis was the first discussion of the physiological mechanism of urine formation. Arguably, Lancisi's most notable medical contribution was the anatomical description of the medial longitudinal striae of the corpus call

The rise of evolutionary theory in the 19th century was shaped not only by Charles Darwin's synthetic insight but also by the foundational work of anatomists whose structural analyses provided the empirical substrate for evolutionary reasoning. Among them, Jacob Henle (1809-1885) stands out as a pivotal figure. Although not an evolutionist himself, Henle's systematic anatomy, especially his detailed mapping of facial musculature, supplied crucial evidence that Darwin later incorporated into The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals (1872). Henle's descriptions of muscles such as the mu

In Italy, recent legislation (Law No. 10/2020) has tuned regulations concerning the donation of one's postmortem body and tissues for study, training, and scientific research purposes. This study discusses several specific issues to optimise the applicability and effectiveness of such an important, novel regulatory setting. Critical issues arise concerning the learners, the type of training and teaching activities that can be planned, the position of academic anatomy institutes, the role of family members in the donation process, the time frame of the donation process, the eligibility of parti

Few families have had an impact on medicine to equal that of the Meckel family. Johann Friedrich Meckel the Elder is of special interest to the neurosciences, given that his dissertation on the fifth cranial nerve included the first description of the arachnoid space investing the trigeminal nerve into the middle fossa. He was interested in neuroanatomy, along with botany and pathology of the inguinal hernia and the lymphatic system. His mentors included the eminent Albrecht von Haller (1708-1777) and August Buddaeus (1695-1753), and he extended his own influence on the work of Giovanni Morgag

Destot was a leading pioneer in radiology, a pupil of Ollier, an anatomist, and researcher who followed in the experimental medicine tradition of Claude Bérnard. This work is an extensive, in depth, look at the life and work of Étienne Destot. On February 5, 1896, he began performing X-ray examinations, less than two months after Roentgen's discovery! His pioneering work described a space bordered by the hamate, capitate, triquetrum, and lunate; this space is now known as Destot's space. Tanton stated that Destot was the first to reveal the mechanism of fractures of the posterior margin of the

Venetian physician Giovanni Domenico Santorini is revered as one of the most industrious and thorough anatomists of the eighteenth century. After receiving his medical degree in Pisa, Santorini worked as a physician and professor of anatomy and obstetrics in Venice. Of interest, he was a student of Malpighi while in Pisa. He quickly established himself as a dynamic lecturer and meticulous dissector. Santorini's anatomical observations include the prostatic venous plexus, accessory pancreatic duct, corniculate cartilage, parietal emissary veins, the risorius muscle, and many other structures. I

Earlier publications by our group have reported the major contributions of Beauchêne fils, Edme François Chauvot de Beauchêne (1778-1830), a prosector, and surgeon in Paris. These included a variety of firsts: the finding of an intraneural ganglion cyst, the description of the exploded skull (Beauchêne) technique, and the case of air pulmonary embolism. This article describes the exhaustive efforts necessary to locate a portrait of him. Information obtained along the circuitous journey through 13 generations over five centuries will clarify the important medical accomplishments by individuals

Plater's description of Dupuytren's disease in 1614 is explained with regard to his understanding of the anatomy. The current view that Plater believed the disease to be caused by dislocation and shortening of the flexor tendons is based upon misinterpretation of the original Latin text. With the help of his anatomical studies, Plater had proven that subcutaneous ligamentous extensions of the palmar aponeurosis and not the flexor tendons were responsible for Dupuytren's disease. Felix Plater realised more than one hundred and fifty years before Cline, Cooper, and Dupuytren the palmar aponeuros
