Facial reconstruction is employed in the context of forensic investigation and for creating three-dimensional portraits of people from the past, from ancient Egyptian mummies and bog bodies to digital animations of J. S. Bach. This paper considers a facial reconstruction method (commonly known as the Manchester method) associated with the depiction and identification of the deceased from skeletal remains. Issues of artistic licence and scientific rigour, in relation to soft tissue reconstruction, anatomical variation and skeletal assessment, are discussed. The need for artistic interpretation

Causes of intracerebral hemorrhage are mostly attributed to vascular anomalies or hypertension. It causes significant morbidity and mortality worldwide. This illustrative case report presents an interesting computed tomography image of hyperacute basal ganglia hemorrhage with intraventricular extension artistically casting the ventricular system. The intraventricular hemorrhage was moderate upon presentation; the blood had delineated the anatomic details of the ventricular system. It closely resembles a Crax rubra's head in the sagittal view. We believe that this radiographic finding is not se

The development of neuroimaging has allowed clinicians to improve clinicoanatomic correlations in patients with stroke. Anatomic structures are well delineated on MRI, but there is a lack of standardization in their arterial supply. As in our previous study depicting the arterial supply of the brainstem and cerebellum, we present a system of 12 axial sections of the hemispheres depicting the dominant arterial territories, the most important anatomic structures, and Brodmann's areas. The area of variation of the cortical territory of the anterior, middle, and posterior cerebral arteries is also

Until the advent of plastinated cadavers, few outside the medical professions have had firsthand experience with human corpses. Such opportunities are now available at the Body Worlds exhibits of Gunther von Hagens. After an overview of these exhibits, we explore visitor responses as revealed in comment books available upon exiting the exhibit. Cultural, philosophical, and religious issues raised in the comments serve as a microcosm of society at large. The conclusion considers the challenge of such exhibits in introducing the public to science education, notes the image of the body as machine

Dupuytren's disease is characterized clinically by a proliferative fibrous contracture of the palmar or digital fascia. A logical approach to the assessment and treatment of this complex condition requires a precise knowledge of the anatomy of the palmar fascia. This dissection study was carried out on ten cadaveric hands to determine the relationship between the longitudinal and transverse fibers of the palmar fascia. We found that the deepest layer of the three longitudinal layers of the palmar fascia (layer 3) divided at the transverse fibers into two sub-layers. Fibers of the deeper sub-la

BACKGROUND: Despite increasing awareness of issues related to sex and gender representation in medical education, previous studies have shown that anatomical atlases often present the male body as the default anatomical model, with female bodies more frequently depicted in sex-specific contexts. However, little is known about how such global visual patterns are reflected in atlases officially recommended within national medical curricula. The aim of this study was to assess sex-based representation in anatomical illustrations contained in the most frequently recommended atlases used at Polish

OBJECTIVE: To provide an anatomical atlas made of serially sectioned images of a female cadaver that clearly demonstrated the pudendal nerve.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The courses of the pudendal nerve, internal pudendal artery, and internal pudendal vein were observed on the sectioned images of a female cadaver. The spatial relationship between the nerve and blood vessels was interpreted.
RESULTS: Traces of the structures on the sectioned images showed that the sources of the sciatic and pudendal nerves were the fourth lumbar nerve to the second sacral nerve and the second to the fourth sacral

Gaetano Giulio Zumbo's anatomical model of a head, executed in the late seventeenth century and now in Florence's La Specola, is the earliest known life-size wax model for use in study and research. The model conjoins experimental wax techniques with human matter such as hair, teeth and bone, and confronts the observer not only with the interior of the head but also with the face, brutally dissected and in the process of decomposing. By contrast, the back of the head offers an entirely different display, an actual human cranium cut across its upper part and revealing carefully dissected and vi

Félix Vicq d'Azyr was born in 1748 in the small town of Valognes, Normandy. He studied medicine in Paris but he was particularly impressed by the lectures given at the Jardin du Roi by the comparative anatomist Louis Daubenton and the surgeon Antoine Petit. In 1773, Vicq d'Azyr initiated a series of successful lectures on human and animal anatomy at the Paris Medical School, from which he received his medical degree in 1774. He was elected the same year at the Academy of Sciences at age 26, thanks to his outstanding contributions to comparative anatomy. Vicq d'Azyr became widely known after hi

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Leonardo Da Vinci possessed one of humanity's greatest minds, known for exploring the boundaries of art and science. The discipline of facial plastic surgery also relies on art and science for its advancement. This review focuses on key elements of Leonardo Da Vinci's work, and how they relate to concepts within facial plastic surgery.
RECENT FINDINGS: Leonardo Da Vinci was a self-taught creative genius. Common themes that permeated his art were those of proportion, perspective, light and shadow, anatomy, and science. These principles are reflected in key aspects of facial

The phylogenetic position of crocodilians in relation to birds and mammals makes them an interesting animal model for investigating the evolution of the nervous system in amniote vertebrates. A few neuroanatomical atlases are available for reptiles, but with a growing interest in these animals within the comparative neurosciences, a need for these anatomical reference templates is becoming apparent. With the advent of MRI being used more frequently in comparative neuroscience, the aim of this study was to create a three-dimensional MRI-based atlas of the Nile crocodile (Crocodylus niloticus) b

In the history of dermatology, we find an outstanding example of scientific collaboration of leading dermatologists leading to an international publication in the late 19th century. Published by Malcolm Morris, Paul Gerson Unna, Henry-Camille Chrysostome Leloir and Louis Adolphus Duhring, the "International Atlas of Rare Skin Diseases" focused on rare and unique cases in dermatology. This concept, extraordinary for the time of publication, was found to be very successful. Numerous first descriptions are found in the "International Atlas", such as porokeratosis of Mibelli, acanthosis nigricans

Born in Wetter, Germany, in 1500, Johannes Eichmann (Dryander) studied medicine and anatomy at the University of Paris from 1528 to 1534. In 1535, he was appointed professor of medicine at the University of Marburg. During the next year he held two public dissections, and in 1536 he was the author of the first text illustrating a Galenic dissection of the human brain. An expanded edition of this early book, the Anatomiae pars prior, was published in 1537. These texts represented an important transition from the dogma of medieval scholasticism to the precise observations of Vesalius. The books

The parietal lobe plays a major role in sensorimotor integration and action. Recent neuroimaging studies have revealed more than 40 retinotopic areas distributed across five visual streams in the human brain, two of which enter the parietal lobe. A series of retinotopic areas occupy the length of the intraparietal sulcus and continue into the postcentral sulcus. On the medial wall, retinotopy extends across the parieto-occipital sulcus into the precuneus and reaches the cingulate sulcus. Full-body tactile stimulation revealed a multisensory homunculus lying along the postcentral sulcus just po

Although Renaissance artists were skilled in representing normal anatomy, a close look at some paintings reveals anatomical variations in the depiction of the feet of human figures. A systematic review has identified 25 paintings by five artists in which the presumptive medico-artistic diagnosis of congenital or acquired foot deformity seems to be varyingly present. The connection between these five painters and what factors have influenced artists' style in the depiction of such deformities is discussed. The possible iconography and medical-historical meaning of such variations, as well as th

Carlo Ruini's Dell'Anotomia et dell'infirmità del cavallo (1598) is widely regarded as the first scientific treatise on veterinary anatomy. This paper reviews the historical circumstances of its composition and printing history, the structure and scientific content of its five anatomical books, the long-standing controversy over Ruini's authorship - including the plagiarisms it subsequently suffered - and the disputed attribution of its woodcut illustrations to artists such as Leonardo da Vinci, Titian and Agostino Carracci. Ruini's description of the pulmonary circulation is situated within a
