Biosafety implications of cadaver preservation methods in veterinary anatomy education.

Cadaver dissection remains fundamental in veterinary medicine and anatomy education, providing an irreplaceable experiential learning opportunity. It fosters three-dimensional anatomical understanding, the development of manual dissection skills, and early insights into clinical practice. Despite growing availability of digital and virtual simulation tools, preserved animal cadavers remain essential and are still preferred for anatomy teaching, surgical training, and diagnostic instruction. No alternative method reproduces anatomical structures with the same fidelity as a real cadaver. Preserv

Personality and Success in a First-Year Veterinary Gross Anatomy Course.

Researchers are increasingly paying attention to non-cognitive ways to determine a student's ability to succeed in graduate studies. This study investigated associations between the Big Five personality domain scores and academic performance in Gross Anatomy I (GA1) at Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine. Within the first 2 weeks of the semester, a researcher-developed survey instrument was used for psychological assessment of the Big Five personality domains. Survey domain scores were compared with students' final GA1 course grades. Conscientiousness was positively associated with f

Comparative evaluation of canine cadaver embalming methods for veterinary anatomy education.

Formalin-embalmed cadavers have been extensively used to teach anatomy. Although they ensure the preservation of anatomical structures without microbial contamination, they are considerably rigid and cannot be used to study the joint and muscle movements. Moreover, formalin irritates the eyes and airways and is carcinogenic on chronic exposure. To overcome the disadvantages of formalin-fixed cadavers, we investigated the usefulness of alternative embalming methods using saturated salt solution (SS) and Thiel's solution (TS). We compared the three solutions based on the following parameters: co

State-of-the-art artificial intelligence frameworks and models for diagnostic veterinary anatomy.

BACKGROUND: Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly being used in diagnostic veterinary anatomy to assist with medical-image interpretation, anatomical segmentation, disease recognition, and quantitative morphometric measurements. Even so, evidence specific to this area remains fragmented, particularly with regard to the performance of individual AI frameworks, the way they have been validated, and their practical relevance to veterinary diagnostic anatomy. PURPOSE: This review critically examines current AI frameworks and models applied to diagnostic veterinary anatomy. Particular atten

Improving Veterinary Students' Interest and Engagement During Anatomy Dissection Sessions: Approaches Related to Flow Theory.

A strong foundational understanding of anatomy is central to veterinary education. It is essential for acquiring clinical, surgical, and diagnostic skills in veterinary students. Veterinary anatomy is delivered by didactic lectures and laboratory dissection; however, maintaining student engagement during dissection can be challenging. This article outlines some pedagogical approaches that, if applied in a canine and feline anatomy course, could enhance student engagement and effective learning. Approaches that may be adopted include the provision of pre-matriculation materials on basic anatomi

Comparative Evaluation of a Hologram (3D) and PowerPoint (2D) as Educational Methods for Learning Veterinary Anatomy of the Equine Paranasal Sinuses.

3D teaching, including various types of mixed and virtual reality, are increasingly being used in anatomy, including on veterinary programs. In this study we compared the use of 3D mixed reality holographic technology and a 2D PowerPoint teaching resource to investigate the proof of concept of the usability and efficacy of the 3D technology. The anatomical area of the equine sinuses was the subject matter. The study design involved a series of questionnaires and tests delivered before and after the students used the learning resource. First-year veterinary students were randomly allocated to e

The Impact of Low-Fidelity Three-Dimensional-Printed Models of the Equine Distal Limb and the Canine Forelimb in Teaching Veterinary Anatomy in Practical Classes.

Limited cadaver availability and health risks from formaldehyde-treated cadavers have increased the need for alternative learning materials in veterinary anatomy education. Two studies were conducted to investigate whether low-fidelity 3D-printed models provide comparable learning outcomes to real specimens. In study 1, veterinary students were assigned to two groups to study the equine distal limb on a real specimen (n = 67) or a 3D model (n = 68). In study 2, students were divided into four groups to study the canine forelimb on a real specimen (n = 44), a 3D model (n = 45), a 3D model follo

Ancient Conceptions of the Human Uterus: Italic Votives and Animal Wombs.

The numerous votive uteri found across the central Italian peninsula from the fourth to first centuries BCE are puzzlingly evocative of the human simplex uterus, which is visually distinct from the bicornuate uteri characteristic of most other mammals. However, human dissection is not attested for this time and place, while animal butchery was common. This article uses modern veterinary anatomical imagery to argue that animal uteri - specifically as they appear when pregnant - were indeed models underlying the votive depictions. Some of the variant forms of the votives are highly evocative of

Anatomical and scanning electron microscopic investigations of the tongue and laryngeal entrance in the long-legged buzzard (Buteo rufinus, Cretzschmar, 1829).

This research aimed to examine the morphological features of the tongue and laryngeal entrance of long-legged buzzard by macroscopic and scanning electron microscopic methods. Two adult buzzards were used as material. The tongue was fairly elongated and terminated in oval shovel-like apex. Scale-like projections were localized on the apex and body of tongue. Both lateral sides of lingual body were contained considerably long thread-like projections. Many orifices of lingual posterior salivary glands were discerned among scale-like projections in median sulcus of the lingual body. Papillary cre

Exploring alternatives for securing anatomical structures in capturing digital images: A comparative analysis.

Teaching veterinary anatomy using digital platforms requires improved image quality, which may influence the fixation process. This study aimed to compare four embalming solutions for high-colour-quality images of different tissues compared to the original image. Four equine left pelvic limbs were cut into metameres and divided equally for application of 10% formaldehyde, 96% glycerine, 33% hypersaturated NaCl solution and modified Larssen solution, respectively, which was maintained for 3 days. After drying for 3 days at room temperature, photographs were obtained at time 0 (T0), without any

Dissection and Plastination of the Nervous System of a Dog: A Teaching Tool.

Dissection and plastination of the nervous system have been used to teach anatomy; however, there is no record of a dissection and plastination of a dog's complete nervous system. The objective of this study was to dissect and preserve the whole nervous system of a dog, using the plastination technique, as a tool for teaching veterinary neuroanatomy. A 7-month-old dog was perfused through the common carotid artery with an ethanol-based soft embalming solution, and 10% formalin was injected through the cisterna magna. An incision was made at the level of the dorsal midline, and the muscle tissu

Horse anatomy and art: Carlo Ruini.

Carlo Ruini's Dell'Anotomia et dell'infirmità del cavallo (1598) is widely regarded as the first scientific treatise on veterinary anatomy. This paper reviews the historical circumstances of its composition and printing history, the structure and scientific content of its five anatomical books, the long-standing controversy over Ruini's authorship - including the plagiarisms it subsequently suffered - and the disputed attribution of its woodcut illustrations to artists such as Leonardo da Vinci, Titian and Agostino Carracci. Ruini's description of the pulmonary circulation is situated within a

Macro- and microstructure of the superior cervical ganglion in dogs, cats and horses during maturation.

The superior cervical ganglion (SCG) provides sympathetic input to the head and neck, its relation with mandible, submandibular glands, eyes (second and third order control) and pineal gland being demonstrated in laboratory animals. In addition, the SCG's role in some neuropathies can be clearly seen in Horner's syndrome. In spite of several studies published involving rats and mice, there is little morphological descriptive and comparative data of SCG from large mammals. Thus, we investigated the SCG's macro- and microstructural organization in medium (dogs and cats) and large animals (horses

Morphometric and histopathological evaluation of modified Elnady's plastinated tissue compared to non-plastinated tissue: Highlighting its relevance for teaching and research.

The present study aims to evaluate the morphometric and histopathological properties of Modified Elnady's plastinated tissue after a period compared to non-plastinated tissue. The plastination technique is utilized in research and teaching due to the potential health risks associated with prolonged exposure to formalin. The tissues and organs are permanently dried during plastination and can be used for further anatomical, histopathological and surgical educational purposes. This method involves drying tissue and allowing synthetic materials like glycerin to permeate it. The study compared non
