Antibacterial and Antibiofilm Activities of Bluestem (Andropogon spp.) Extracts against Vibrio cholerae.

Vibrio cholerae is a gram-negative bacterium found in water, particularly in brackish and estuarine environments, and causes cholera-an acute disease transmitted through contaminated food or water. Biofilm formation in V. cholerae enhances its resistance to antimicrobial agents and protection against host immune responses. Natural plant extracts have gained attention for their potential antibiofilm properties against human pathogens such as V. cholerae. This study evaluates the antibacterial and antibiofilm activities of bluestem (Andropogon spp.) extracts against pathogenic V. cholerae strain

Plant influence shapes Andropogon gerardii rhizobiome assembly strategies in response to decreasing precipitation.

Predicted changes in precipitation threaten tallgrass prairies by altering microbial communities essential for plant resilience. Andropogon gerardii, a dominant tallgrass, spans the North American precipitation gradient. However, it remains unclear to what extent the rhizosphere microbiomes (rhizobiomes) are influenced by the plant-host-environmental interaction. To assess how environmental and host influences shape the rhizobiome, we surveyed A. gerardii populations across 25 remnant prairie sites within its native range in the United States, characterizing the microbiomes in the rhizosphere

A multi-criteria sustainability and engine performance study of andropogon narudus biodiesel using the PUGH matrix and ML.

The present work provides an experimental, sustainability, and ML-based analysis of Andropogon Nardus biodiesel as a potential second-generation green fuel for compression ignition engines. The biodiesel blends (AN20, AN30, and AN40) were then used on a single-cylinder direct-injection diesel engine over the 25–100% load range and at injection pressures of 190, 210, and 230 bar. Among the three AN30 blends tested, the improvement in engine performance at 230 bar indicates that AN30 provides nearly 15% greater brake thermal efficiency and reduces brake-specific fuel consumption by as much as 31

The calcium channel blocking and phosphodiesterase inhibitory activities of the extract of Andropogon muricatus explains its medicinal use in airways disorders.

The present work was carried out to provide a pharmacological base for the medicinal use of Andropogon muricatus in airways disorders, such as asthma. In isolated guinea-pig tracheal strips, the crude extract of Andropogon muricatus exhibited a non-specific relaxant effect against carbachol (1 µM) and high K⁺ precontractions, with EC₅₀ values of 0.10 (0.07-0.11) and 0.15 mg/mL (0.11-0.18), respectively, similar to papaverine, while verapamil was more potent against high K⁺. This suggests the involvement of a non-specific relaxant effect, mediated possibly through Ca⁺⁺ channel blockade and phos

Design and operation of a continuous 13C and 15N labeling chamber for uniform or differential, metabolic and structural, plant isotope labeling.

Tracing rare stable isotopes from plant material through the ecosystem provides the most sensitive information about ecosystem processes; from CO2 fluxes and soil organic matter formation to small-scale stable-isotope biomarker probing. Coupling multiple stable isotopes such as (13)C with (15)N, (18)O or (2)H has the potential to reveal even more information about complex stoichiometric relationships during biogeochemical transformations. Isotope labeled plant material has been used in various studies of litter decomposition and soil organic matter formation(1-4). From these and other studies,

Flood-driven survival and growth of dominant C4 grasses helps set their distributions along tallgrass prairie moisture gradients.

PREMISE: Five C4 grasses (Bouteloua curtipendula, Schizachyrium scoparium, Andropogon gerardii, Sorghastrum nutans, Spartina pectinata) dominate different portions of a moisture gradient from dry to wet tallgrass prairies in the Upper Midwest of the United States. We hypothesized that their distributions may partly reflect differences in flooding tolerance and context-specific growth relative to each other. METHODS: We tested these ideas with greenhouse flooding and drought experiments, outdoor mesocosm experiments, and a natural experiment involving a month-long flood in two wet-mesic prairi

In vitro and in vivo anti-malarial activity of plants from the Brazilian Amazon.

BACKGROUND: The anti-malarials quinine and artemisinin were isolated from traditionally used plants (Cinchona spp. and Artemisia annua, respectively). The synthetic quinoline anti-malarials (e.g. chloroquine) and semi-synthetic artemisinin derivatives (e.g. artesunate) were developed based on these natural products. Malaria is endemic to the Amazon region where Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium vivax drug-resistance is of concern. There is an urgent need for new anti-malarials. Traditionally used Amazonian plants may provide new treatments for drug-resistant P. vivax and P. falciparum. Here

Effects of Nitrogen and Phosphorus Limitation on Lipid Accumulation by Chlorella kessleri str. UTEX 263 Grown in Darkness.

Growing algae in darkness for biodiesel production eliminates the challenges of evaporation and light penetration reported for open ponds and the costs and fouling that plague photobioreactors. The current study demonstrated that Chlorella kessleri str. UTEX 263 could grow heterotrophically in the dark on pure sugars or lignocellulosic hydrolysates of plant biomass. Hydrolysates of a prairie grass native to Kansas, Big bluestem (Andropogon gerardii), supported the growth of C. kessleri in the dark. Nitrogen limitation stimulated the accumulation of biodiesel lipids by 10-fold in heterotrophic

Bioavailability of uranium and nickel to vegetation in a contaminated riparian ecosystem.

The lower portion of Tims Branch (TB), a second-order stream system on the Savannah River site (SC, USA), receives influx of mixed waste-contaminated sediments from Steed Pond, a former settling basin for target processing wastes for over three decades. The magnitude and distribution of U, Ni, and other metals and the potential for trophic movement were studied to facilitate risk assessment and determine potential remedial action. Total and sequential extraction of TB soils demonstrated contaminant heterogeneity both spatially and between operationally defined fractions. Metal concentrations w

Sustainable RCCI engine operation with an ANN based novel tri-fuel approach.

This research delves into a novel tri-fuel RCCI engine strategy that uses diesel as the base fuel, biodiesel from Andropogon narudus, and hydrogen as a reactivity promoter to enhance combustion efficiency and enhance environmental sustainability. The tested blends, BD80H20 and BD70H30, showed a 3-5% improvement in Brake Thermal Efficiency (BTE) compared to conventional diesel at full load operation. Hydrogen-rich blends recorded a 5-8% brake-specific fuel economy improvement over diesel and B20 at both 75% and 100% engine loads. The biodiesel has made a substantial reduction in hydrocarbon (HC

Hydrothermally-altered feldspar reduces metal toxicity and promotes plant growth in highly metal-contaminated soils.

Novel green technologies for soil remediation have been focusing on altering soil properties and improving soil health. Hydrothermally-altered feldspar (HYP, HydroPotash), recently developed, is being related as both an efficient amendment to immobilize heavy metals in soils and a plant nutrients source, consisting in a promising technology for revegetation of contaminated sites. In order to evaluate the effectiveness of using HYP for phytostabilization programs, two different soils (Technosol and Oxisol) collected from a smelting site were amended with increasing doses of HYPs (HYP-1 and HYP-

Selection of plants for optimization of vegetative filter strips treating runoff from turfgrass.

Runoff from turf environments, such as golf courses, is of increasing concern due to the associated chemical contamination of lakes, reservoirs, rivers, and ground water. Pesticide runoff due to fungicides, herbicides, and insecticides used to maintain golf courses in acceptable playing condition is a particular concern. One possible approach to mitigate such contamination is through the implementation of effective vegetative filter strips (VFS) on golf courses and other recreational turf environments. The objective of the current study was to screen ten aesthetically acceptable plant species

Ex vitro standardization enables evaluation of phosphorus-use strategies in Pampa biome grasses.

Native grasses of the Pampa biome are essential for ecosystem functioning and restoration, yet understanding of how native species respond to nutrient availability remains limited by challenges in standardizing plant material for controlled experiments. To address this, we developed a reproducible ex vitro propagation protocol to standardize native grass materials and applied it to three representative Pampa biome grasses, Paspalum notatum, Andropogon lateralis, and Axonopus affinis. Using a minimally disturbed soil column system, we evaluated species-specific responses to contrasting phosphor

Soil texture mediates microbial assembly and network organization under moisture stress.

BACKGROUND: Climate-driven changes in moisture are expected to intensify environmental selection in soils, yet the extent to which soil texture modifies microbial responses to moisture stress remains poorly understood. Because soil texture governs water retention, nutrient diffusion, and habitat structure, it may fundamentally influence how microbial communities assemble and function under drought. Here, we investigated how moisture and soil texture interact to shape bacterial and fungal rhizosphere communities associated with Andropogon virginicus, a drought-tolerant wild relative of maize, a

Embryogenesis and tadpole description of Hyperolius castaneus Ahl, 1931 and H. jackie Dehling, 2012 (Anura, Hyperoliidae) from montane bog pools.

Tadpoles of Hyperolius castaneus and Hyperolius jackie were found in the Nyungwe National Park in Rwanda and adjacent areas. Tadpoles of both species were identified by DNA-barcoding. At the shore of a bog pool three clutches of Hyperolius castaneus of apparently different age, all laid on moss pads (Polytrichum commune, Isotachis aubertii) or grass tussocks (Andropogon shirensis) 2-5 cm above the water level, were found. One clutch of Hyperolius castaneus was infested by larval dipterid flies. The most recently laid clutch contained about 20 eggs within a broad egg-jelly envelope. The eggs we

Phytoremediation potential of three terrestrial plant species for removal of atrazine, azoxystrobin, and imidacloprid.

Pesticides can move off-target resulting in contamination of sensitive water bodies and causing adverse effects on inhabiting species. Through best management practices, such as the implementation of vegetative buffer strips, off-target movement of pesticides can be decreased, and compound degradation can be increased via phytoremediation. In this study, blueflag iris (Iris versicolor), broomsedge (Andropogon virginicus) and switchgrass (Panicum virgatum) were planted in soil treated with one of three commonly used pesticides. At 28, 56 and 112 days after treatment (DAT), plants were destructi
