Angelman syndrome is characterized by severe mental retardation, absence of speech, bursts of laughter, ataxia, seizure disorder and facial dysmorphism. This report describes the first 3 children with Angelman syndrome from Bahrain. The diagnosis was based on clinical features and confirmed by the presence of microdeletion of 15q11q13 using fluorescence in situ hybridization.

The Angelman syndrome is a neurological disorder characterized by constant features: severe mental retardation, easily provoked laughter, ataxia, absent speech, seizures. Most cases are sporadic but familial cases have been reported. About 60 to 70% of cases are due to an interstitial deletion on the maternally inherited chromosome 15 in the region q11-q13. Rare cases result from paternal disomy. In 30% of patients, neither maternal by inherited deletion, nor paternal disomy, can be found. In this category of patients recurrence risk for sibs is high and molecular mechanisms are not completely

Angelman syndrome combines severe mental retardation, epilepsy, ataxia, speech impairment, and unique behavior with happy demeanor, laughing, short attention span, hyperactivity, and sleep disturbance. Occurrence has been calculated at 1:20000 to 1:12000 constituting about 6% of all children with severe mental retardation and epilepsy. The physical "prototype" includes microcephaly with flat neck, fair skin and hair, wide-spaced teeth, and open mouth with tongue protrusion. Epilepsy is characterized by atypical absences, erratic myoclonus, and occasional tonic-clonic seizures. EEG demonstrates

BACKGROUND: Angelman (happy puppet) syndrome is a neuro-developmental condition characterized by an ataxic gait with puppet-like limb movements, paroxysmal bouts of laughter and severe mental retardation. Although considered a rare condition, over 140 cases have been documented since its designation in 1965. To date, only one study has been published investigating the ocular defects of Angelman syndrome.
METHODS: In this paper we report the cognitive, motor, systemic, and oculo-visual findings of a 3 year old child with Angelman syndrome.
RESULTS: The oculo-visual findings include choroidal

Distinction of patients with Angelman's syndrome in a group of mentally retarded patients is important even though the syndrome was rarely reported since the original description in 1965. Before that time these patients were thought to suffer from neurologic sequelae of perinatal asphyxia, Lennox-Gastaut syndrome or mental retardation of unknown origin. Diagnosis is based on the following criteria: developmental delay from early age, absent speech (or speech limited to less than six words), jerky movements with an ataxic gait if the patient is walking, paroxysm of inappropriate laughing, dysmo

OBJECTIVES: Angelman syndrome (AS) is characterized by severe mental retardation, epilepsy, absent speech, dysmorphic facial features, and a characteristic behavioral phenotype. It is caused by deficiency of gene expression from maternally derived chromosome 15q11-q13.
STUDY DESIGN: The authors present the clinical picture of 9 children (median age, 4.9 years; range, 1 to 10 years) with confirmed Angelman syndrome. The patients complied with the international consensus criteria for AS and were consecutively investigated for psychomotor development, epilepsy, and electroencephalogram (EEG) pro

Angelman syndrome (AS) is caused by a lack of expression of the maternally inherited UBE3A gene in the brain. However, about 10% of individuals with a clinical diagnosis of AS do not have an identifiable molecular defect. It is likely that most of those individuals have an AS-like syndrome that is clinically and molecularly distinct from AS. These AS-like syndromes can be broadly classified into chromosomal microdeletion and microduplication syndromes, and single-gene disorders. The microdeletion/microduplication syndromes are now easily identified by chromosomal microarray analysis and includ

Angelman Syndrome (AS) is a neurodevelopmental disorder most commonly caused by the impaired expression of the maternal UBE3A gene on chromosome 15. Though anxiety has been identified as a frequently present characteristic in AS, there are limited studies examining anxiety in this population. Studies of anxiety in other neurodevelopmental disorders have found disorder specific symptoms of anxiety and age specific displays of anxiety symptoms. However, there is a consistent challenge in identifying anxiety in people with neurodevelopmental disorders given the lack of measurement instruments spe

Angelman syndrome (AS) is a neurogenetic imprinting disorder caused by loss of the maternally inherited Ube3a gene and is characterized by generalized epilepsy, limited expressive speech, sleep dysfunction, and movement disorders. Myoclonic seizures are often the first seizure type to appear, and myoclonic status, associated with developmental regression, may occur in the first few years of life. Additionally, there have been rare reports of prolonged episodes of myoclonus without electrographic correlate in adults with AS. The medical records of 200 individuals seen in the Angelman Syndrome C

Angelman syndrome (AS) is a neurogenetic disorder. The goal of this study was to investigate the primary health issues affecting adults with AS and to further characterize the natural history and genotype-phenotype correlations. Standardized phone interviews with caregivers for 110 adolescents and adults with AS were conducted. The impact of age, sex, and genotype on specific outcomes in neurology, orthopedics, internal medicine, and psychiatry were investigated. The mean age of individuals with AS was 24 years (range 16-50y). Active seizures were present in 41% of individuals, and 72% had sle

Angelman syndrome (AS) is a rare neurodevelopmental disorder with an incidence of 1:10,000-1:40,000 caused by deficient genetic imprinting in the chromosomal segment 15q11-q13. Experimental data suggest that the gamma-aminobutyric acid A (GABA(A)) receptor as well as the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) or α-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazole proprionic acid (AMPA) receptors may be affected by this condition. The first description of the syndrome goes back to 1965 when the British pediatrician Harry Angelman (1915-1996) recognized similar clinical features in three children. Angelman's descriptio

We describe the administration of anaesthesia to a patient with Angelman syndrome, which is characterised by an abnormality of chromosome 15, where a subunit of the GABA receptor is coded. This has far-reaching anaesthetic implications as many drugs used in anaesthesia are thought to act via GABA receptors. Our patient had an uneventful peri-operative period and was discharged home on the second postoperative day.

Angelman syndrome is a rare genetic disorder with various phenotypes caused by the combination of genomic imprinting and loss of the maternal UBE3A gene. The case presentation involves a nine-month-old who continues with developmental delays after working with an early intervention therapist and was later diagnosed with Angelman syndrome following several specialty referrals and genetic testing. Currently, there is no cure for Angelman syndrome, only supportive symptomatic treatment. Angelman syndrome requires a multidisciplinary approach across providers who understand the complex care essent

INTRODUCTION: Angelman syndrome (AS) is widely described in childhood, but few studies have been conducted in adulthood and most of them report a small number of patients or specific conditions, such as epilepsy or sleep.
AIM: The aim of this study is to describe AS in adulthood in our centre, the special needs it requires, and the medical and social support to improve care and to provide a better transition from the paediatric service to units for adults.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We collected patients with genetically confirmed AS, and described demographic, medical and social data by reviewin

Chromosome region 15q is thought to contain one or more genes that are important for melanin pigment synthesis in the hair, skin, and eyes. Hypopigmentation has been identified in the Prader-Willi (PWS) and Angelman (AS) syndromes. We have examined 6 individuals with AS to further characterize the pigment pattern in this condition. The age of the 5 girls and one boy ranged from 2.4 to 7.0 years. None had obvious albinism. Hair color ranged from light blond to brown. Skin was type I in 3 and type II in 3. Eye changes included nystagmus in 2, strabismus in 4, and reduced retinal pigment in 5. Th

The authors report an 11-month-old patient with the clinical features of Angelman syndrome and a 15q11 x 2-12 chromosomal deletion, thus demonstrating that the clinical features may be present in infancy and so allow early diagnosis. The features included pronounced postnatal growth failure, delayed dentition and ossification of growth centers. Low amniotic fluid alpha-fetoprotein was noted at 16 weeks of gestation. Head MRI showed only generalized atrophy. Some affected patients have a genetic marker similar to the chromosomal deletion associated with Prader-Willi syndrome. The importance of

Angelman syndrome (AS) is a rare neurogenetic disorder caused by a loss of function of UBE3A on the maternal allele. Clinical features include severe neurodevelopmental delay, epilepsy, sleep disturbances, and behavioral disorders. Therapy currently evolves from conventional symptomatic, supportive, and antiseizure treatments toward alteration of mRNA expression, which is subject of several ongoing clinical trials. This article will provide an overview of clinical research and therapeutic approaches on AS.
