A 14-year-old African American female presented to the emergency department with spontaneous, sudden-onset lip swelling for 1 h. On examination, there was significant water-bag edema of the upper lip extending to the philtrum and premaxilla. Nasopharyngeal laryngoscopy revealed a patent airway without edema. She was initiated on intravenous dexamethasone, famotidine, and diphenhydramine, after which her edema improved but did not resolve. She was subsequently transferred to a local pediatric hospital and upon further testing she was found to have a C1 esterase inhibitor de novo gene mutation.

Hereditary angioedema (HAE) encompasses a heterogeneous group of diseases with similar phenotypes but different underlying genotypes. Specific clinical signs may point to HAE as opposed to histaminergic angioedema: the typical prolonged development of angioedema over time, positive family history, a lack of response to antihistamines and steroids and response to bradykinin antagonists are typical signs of HAE. The different types of HAE may be associated with a severe clinical course. They are life-long conditions and are still potentially life-threatening. The quality of life of patients with

BACKGROUND: Recurrent angioedema is a rare entity during childhood. This study aimed to clarify differences between hereditary angioedema (HAE) and histaminergic angioedema (HA) in children.
METHODS: Fifty-seven children with HAE (male 36.8%, 8.9 years [5.4-12.5]) and 42 children with recurrent HA (male 42.9%, 11.5 years [8.1-16.8]) were analyzed.
RESULTS: The median age at symptom onset (6 [3-10]; 7.8 [4.5-13] years), frequency of angioedema episodes within last year (3 [2-5]; 5 [2-10]), and duration of symptoms (48 [24-48]; 24 [12-48] hours) were similar in the HAE and HA group, respective

OBJECTIVE: To report a case of successful use of a transdermal contraceptive in a patient with hereditary angioedema.
DESIGN: Case report.
SETTING: University medical center.
PATIENT(S): A patient who had used oral contraceptives contracted SC and submucosal tumefaction every 1 or 2 months. She was diagnosed with type I hereditary angioedema. It was determined that she was complement C4 deficient and C1-inhibitor quantitative deficient but functional C1-inhibitor normal. After she was diagnosed, the use of oral contraceptives was contraindicated.
INTERVENTION(S): Oral contraceptives were s

Hereditary angioedema is a rare familial disease caused by the defect of complement C1esterase inhibitor (C1-INH). It is characterized by recurrent acute edema of the extremities, the face, the respiratory tract and the gastrointestinal tract. Acute laryngeal edema usually produces laryngeal obstruction. Two cases have been treated since 1986, one of them had been admitted for forty-five times because of recurrent acute laryngeal edema. Investigations showed two families with a high incidence of this disease. Laboratory examination showed a remarkable decrease of C1-INH and C4. Tracheotomy is

Hereditary angioedema (HAE) is a rare disease, which shows a preponderance of female sufferers. There are various types of HAE, with or without C1 inhibitor deficiency but estrogens may worsen the course of the disease in all the types. It is thus mandatory to know this sensitivity to estrogens in order to improve the management of women with HAE during their child-bearing ages. Contraceptive progestin can help to reduce the frequency and severity of the attacks. Pregnancies can be associated with worsening or improvement. Some other situations where endogenous or exogenous estrogens concentra

BACKGROUND: No published data presently exist concerning hereditary angioedema (HAE) in Turkey. The aim of the study was to initiate a preliminary multicentric evaluation about HAE and to determine the genetic properties of Turkish patients.
METHODS: Based on records drawn from four medical centers we identified a total of 70 subjects, belonging to 60 unrelated families, fulfilling clinical and laboratory criteria for diagnosis of HAE with C1 inhibitor deficiency. Ten type I patients, and their first-degree relatives, underwent genetic analysis for HAE.
RESULTS: The majority of patients were

INTRODUCTION: Hereditary angioedema (HAE) is a rare disorder with a prevalence of approximately 1 in 50,000. Management of HAE brings challenges including the frequency of delivery of the medication, routes of medication delivery, cost of treatment and significant impact on quality of life for patients with HAE. Donidalorsen is the newest FDA-approved long-term prophylaxis medication for HAE that offers substantial benefits over its competitors.
AREAS COVERED: A search of the current literature on donidalorsen was conducted using the PubMed and Cochrane libraries. In this review, we discuss t

Hereditary angioedema is a genetic disease with autosomal dominant inheritance and, in most cases, caused by C1 inhibitor deficiency. Patients present with recurrent edema affecting sub-cutaneous and mucus membranes with variable onset and severity. More than 50% of patients may become symptomatic before 10 years of age. Family history can help with the diagnosis; however, approximately 25% of the cases are de novo mutations. Biochemical diagnosis should be delayed until after 1 year of age. Children were often excluded from advances in therapy for hereditary angioedema since most of the new m

BACKGROUND: Hereditary angioedema is classified as a primary immunodeficiency of the complement system because it is characterized by the absence of C1 esterase inhibitor (C1-INH) and by the periodic edema of any region of the body that involves soft tissue.
OBJECTIVE: To characterize the adult patients with a confirmed diagnosis of hereditary angioedema who have been treated in the Clinical Allergology Department of Hospital México de la Caja Costarricense del Seguro Social.
METHODS: The study was retrospective and observational. The information was obtained from the clinical records of the

Hereditary angioedema (HAE) is defined as a rare genetic disease with recurrent episodes of localized bradykinin-mediated swelling of the deep tissues of the skin, respiratory, and gastrointestinal tracts that can be life threatening. Classification of HAE has evolved over time with our further understanding of clinical phenotypes, underlying causes, and available testing. In most cases, HAE is caused by a deficiency of C1-esterase inhibitor (C1-INH) on the Serpin Family G Member 1 (SERPING1) gene, either through decreased amounts of C1-INH protein (C1-INH-HAE, type 1) or decreased function of

Hereditary angioedema (HAE) is a rare autosomal dominant disease, characterized by episodes of edema involving the skin, gastrointestinal tract and larynx. HAE has a historical asphyxia mortality of 15% to 50%. It is the consequence of functional C1 inhibitor deficiency. The identification of bradykinin as the principal mediator of the disease has lead to the development of new drugs for its treatment. HAE management and treatment are agreed by international consensus decision. A therapeutic guide for the treatment of the disease is important to improve diagnosis and treatment. We here describ

Hereditary angioedema (HAE) is a rare autosomal dominant disorder affecting approximately 1 in 50000 persons. It causes frequent attacks of non-pitting, non-pruritic edema without urticaria, usually of the skin of the extremities, gastrointestinal tract, and upper airways. Gastrointestinal attacks may cause severe pain, and attacks in the laryngeal region may lead to asphyxiation and death. HAE usually begins in childhood or adolescence and persists throughout life. The majority of HAE cases are caused by mutations that result in low levels of functional C1-inhibitor (C1-INH), a serine proteas

Hereditary angioedema (HAE) is characterized by sudden attacks of deep tissue swelling caused by C1 inhibitor deficiency. Swelling severity can vary from mild to severe, and some patients are at risk for disability and death from either asphyxiation or hypovolemic shock. Many HAE attacks are precipitated by trauma or stress. The extremities, genitalia, trunk, bowels, face, and larynx are commonly affected areas, but swelling can affect any single part of the body or multiple sites. Symptoms typically worsen over 24 to 36 hours and resolve within 48 hours. Because many symptoms of HAE overlap w

Hereditary angioedema is an autosomal dominant disorder of the complement system in which there is a deficiency of the inhibitor of the activated first component of complement. We have previously reported on three generations of a family with classic hereditary angioedema. Three members of this family have now developed IgA nephropathy. The association of hereditary angioedema with various immunoregulatory disorders has been previously reported but this is the first report of IgA nephropathy in association with this condition.

Recurrent hypovolaemic shock had been occurring over the last five and four years, respectively, in a 53-year-old woman and a 46-year-old man who had previously been healthy. The attacks were characterized by a tension feeling and sometimes oedema in the limbs, as well as increased thirst. Within a few hours sweating, tachycardia, orthostatic complaints and shock would occur. The woman's systolic blood pressure would fall to 70 mm Hg and the pulse rate rise to 150/min. The man's blood pressure was not measurable by sphygmomanometer during his first attack. Haematocrit rose to 61 and 71.5%, hae

The frequent first clinical manifestation of hereditary angioedema (HAE) in pubertal patients and the more frequent attacks of edema during menstruation indicate that the condition is affected by hormones. Medication with oral contraceptives containing estrogens can lead to severe attacks of edema. On the other hand, HAE mostly shows a favorable development in pregnancy. Despite the substantial trauma of delivery, complications are rare. In view of the literature report of a death and our own observation of potentially dangerous edema in the postpartal phase in one patient, it appears to us to
