Angiostrongylus (Parastrongylus) eosinophilic meningitis.

Angiostrongylus (Parastrongylus) cantonensis is the commonest cause of eosinophilic meningitis in the world. Infective third-stage larvae develop in slugs and snails. Humans are infected primarily in the central nervous system after ingesting an infected intermediate host. Damage by motile worms, inflammatory responses to foreign bodies, and possible toxicity of worm substances work in concert to produce the pathologic and clinical picture of neurologic angiostrongyliasis. This disease manifests itself by headache, paresthesias, generalized weakness, and occasionally visual disturbances and ex

Elusive Angiostrongylus vasorum infections.

BACKGROUND: The parasitic nematode Angiostrongylus vasorum causes severe clinical signs in dogs. The disease is often challenging because infected animals are often presented with clinical signs overlapping those of other diseases. METHODS: The present article describes six angiostrongylosis cases (Cases 1-6) that represent key examples of how canine angiostrongylosis may be extremely confounding. The six animals presented clinical signs compatible with canine angiostrongylosis but they were subjected to clinical examinations for other diseases (e.g. dirofilariosis or immune-mediated disorder

Human Angiostrongylus cantonensis: an update.

Angiostrongylus cantonensis was first discovered in 1935 and has become an important emerging pathogen causing human angiostrongyliasis. Major outbreaks of human angiostrongyliasis have been reported in endemic regions. Thousands of cases of human angiostrongyliasis have been documented worldwide. A. cantonensis has spread from its traditional endemic regions of the Pacific islands and Southeast Asia to the American continent including the USA, Caribbean islands and Brazil. Humans acquire A. cantonensis by consumption of raw or undercooked intermediate snail hosts or paratenic hosts. The main

Comparative neuropathogenesis of Angiostrongylus cantonensis and Angiostrongylus malaysiensis infection in an experimental BALB/c mouse model.

Neuroangiostrongyliasis is a neuroinvasive helminth infection caused primarily by the rat lungworm Angiostrongylus cantonensis, which is the main causative agent of eosinophilic meningitis in humans. The closely related species Angiostrongylus malaysiensis coexists in many endemic regions particularly in Asia and Oceania and shares substantial morphological and genetic similarity with A. cantonensis, yet its pathogenic potential remains poorly understood. Here, we performed a direct comparative investigation of neuropathogenesis and host immune responses following experimental infection with A

Molecular insights versus morphological traits: rethinking identification of the closely related Angiostrongylus cantonensis and Angiostrongylus malaysiensis.

BACKGROUND: The closely related Angiostrongylus cantonensis and Angiostrongylus malaysiensis have been reported to coexist in Thailand and share similar hosts and life cycles. Recently, in an angiostrongyliasis outbreak in Thailand, both A. cantonensis and A. malaysiensis were found in the cerebrospinal fluid of affected patients. Morphological similarities, overlapping distribution, shared hosts and habitats, and the close genetics of the two Angiostrongylus species can complicate accurate species identification. Addressing these challenges, this study aims to evaluate whether a correlation b

[Eosinophilic meningitis due to Angiostrongylus cantonensis].

Angiostrongylus cantonensis is the most common etiological agent of eosinophilic meningitis. Adults are harbored in the pulmonary arteries of rats. Larvae develop within various natural (mollusks) and paratenic (snails...) hosts. After ingestion, larvae reach the human central nervous system where they cannot complete their life cycle. This zoonosis is usually seen in Southeast Asia and South Pacific islands. Nevertheless, a few imported cases have been reported in Western countries, possible because of the incubation delay. Mild meningeal irritation signs, paresthesia, cranial nerve abnormali

Eosinophilic meningitis due to Angiostrongylus cantonensis.

Angiostrongylus cantonensis is a nematode parasite that inhabits the pulmonary arteries and heart of rodents. It is one of the causative agents of fatal eosinophilic meningoencephalitis in man. We present five cases of eosinophilic meningitis presumably due to infection with Angiostrongylus cantonensis . All the five patients gave history of ingestion of monitor lizard within ten days of onset of symptoms.

Angiostrongyliasis: analysis of antigens of Angiostrongylus costaricensis adult worms versus IgG from infected patients with Angiostrongylus cantonensis.

The possibility of cross-reactivity was previously investigated by indirect ELISA with sera from Angiostrongylus cantonensis infections, normal controls and A. costaricensis antigen. 5 microg/ml of crude antigen from both sexes of each species reacted with diluted serum samples (1:800) of each of 20 cases of angiostrongyliasis and normal controls, and further with anti-human IgG conjugate at 1:1,000. The mean absorbance values were evaluated as follows; normal controls showed a value of 0.033 using A. costaricensis antigen lower than (0.085) A. costaricensis antigen. Both mean values of angios

Lizards as sentinels for the distribution of Angiostrongylus cantonensis.

The rat lungworm Angiostrongylus cantonensis is a zoonotic metastrongyloid nematode currently considered an emerging pathogen. Originating in Southeast Asia, this nematode has spread to tropical and subtropical parts of the world via its invasive rodent and gastropod hosts. On the island of Tenerife in the Canary archipelago, the A. cantonensis invasion was recognized more than a decade ago. The endemic lizard Gallotia galloti has been identified as a paratenic host of this nematode in the Canary Island ecosystem. Because this lizard species is the most abundant reptile in Tenerife, we tested i

Case Report: Angiostrongylus cantonesis Myelitis in Thailand.

A 67-year-old man presented with headache, middle back pain that radiated to both legs, and paresthesia in the right leg for 1 day. He had eaten raw shrimp 1 week previously. Over the next week after admission, he developed urinary retention and weakness in both legs. The numbness in his right leg expanded to below the umbilicus. Magnetic resonance imaging of the spinal cord showed myelopathy with minimal cord swelling at T9 to the conus medullaris and a hemorrhagic lesion from T10 to T11. A complete blood count on day 28 after the onset of symptoms revealed leukocytosis without eosinophilia a

Angiostrongylus cantonensis Nematode Invasion Pathway, Mallorca, Spain.

Neural angiostrongyliasis is an emerging zoonosis caused by the rat lungworm, Angiostrongylus cantonensis. In humans, infection with this nematode often results in eosinophilic meningitis and other severe disorders of the central nervous system. Europe was deemed a nonendemic region until 2018, when A. cantonensis worms were detected on the Mediterranean island of Mallorca, Spain, a tourism hotspot. Since that time, a sentinel surveillance system and a molecular approach have been used to follow the invasion path of the rat lungworm on the island. A. cantonensis worms have been found in animal

Pneumothorax in a persistent canine Angiostrongylus vasorum infection.

Canine angiostrongylosis is a gastropod-borne parasitosis caused by the cosmopolitan nematode Angiostrongylus vasorum. It is associated with cardiorespiratory disorders and eventually fatal coagulopathies. A 6-months-old female dog previously diagnosed with bronchopneumonia and pneumothorax, treated accordingly without success, was hospitalized for further treatment. Complementary diagnostics confirmed previous findings plus pneumomediastinum, thoracic exudate, leucocytosis, thrombocytosis, hypercoagulability, and hyperglobulinemia. Coprological analysis showed a severe patent A. vasorum infec

Microbiome dataset of the cardiopulmonary nematode Angiostrongylus vasorum.

Angiostrongylus vasorum is an emerging parasitic nematode of dogs, red foxes, and other wild canids. The severity of infection in dogs ranges from subclinical to fatal cardiopulmonary and bleeding disorders collectively known as canine angiostrongylosis. A symbiotic relationship between microorganisms such as bacteria and their eukaryotic hosts is commonly observed in nature. The mutualistic role of bacteria has been documented in plant-parasitic nematodes, gastrointestinal nematodes, and filarial nematodes. The importance of the bacteria for the survival of these parasites has been demonstrat
