Co-existence of congeneric species of acanthocephala: Acanthocephalus lucii and A. anguillae in eels Anguilla anguilla in Ireland.

A population of eels Anguilla anguilla from Lough Derg, R. Shannon, Ireland, harbouring infections of both Acanthocephalus lucii and A. anguillae was studied over three years. Both parasite species had the same intermediate host and eels appeared to be the only definitive host for A. anguillae. Throughout the whole period, A. lucii was the dominant parasite, was over-dispersed throughout the eel population and most frequently occurred as a single species infection. A. anguillae was far less common, its dispersion was close to random at most times and it almost invariably occurred as a mixed sp

Biochemical effects of the pharmaceutical drug paracetamol on Anguilla anguilla.

The ever-increasing presence of pharmaceutical drugs in the environment is a motif of concern, and human-use drugs are of particular importance. This is the case of paracetamol, a widely employed drug in human therapeutics, as analgesic and antipyretic, whose toxicity on aquatic organisms is still not fully characterized. The present study aimed to assess the toxic deleterious effects of paracetamol on European eel, Anguila anguilla, by using a comprehensive battery of antioxidant biomarkers (activities of enzymes such as catalase (CAT) and glutathione S-transferases (GSTs)), and the quantific

Toxic textile dyes accumulate in wild European eel Anguilla anguilla.

Dyes are used to stain inks, paints, textile, paper, leather and household products. They are omnipresent, some are toxic and may threaten our environment, especially aquatic ecosystems. The presence of residues of sixteen dyes (triarylmethanes, xanthenes, phenothiazines and phenoxazines) and their metabolites was analyzed in muscle tissue samples of individual yellow-phased European eels (Anguilla anguilla) from 91 locations in Belgian rivers, canals and lakes sampled between 2000 and 2009 using ultra performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. Eel was contaminated by dyes in

Tolerance of acute hypercapnic acidosis by the European eel ( Anguilla anguilla).

European eels ( Anguilla anguilla) were exposed sequentially to partial pressures of CO(2) in the water ( PwCO(2)) of 5, 10, 20, 40, 60 then 80 mm Hg (equivalent to 0.66-10.5 kPa), for 30 min at each level. This caused a profound drop in arterial plasma pH, from 7.9 to below 7.2, an increase in arterial PCO(2) from 3.0 mm Hg to 44 mm Hg, and a progressive decline in arterial blood O(2) content (caO(2)) from 10.0% to 1.97% volume. Gill ventilation rate increased significantly at water PwCO(2)s of 10, 20 and 40 mm Hg, followed by a decline at PwCO(2)s of 60 and 80 mm Hg, due to periodic breathin

A kinematic comparison of forward and backward swimming in the eel anguilla anguilla.

In addition to forward undulatory swimming, eels (and some other elongated swimmers) can swim backwards in a similar way. We compared the kinematics (wave speed, cycle frequency, amplitude, local bending and estimated muscle strain) of forward and backward swimming in the European eel Anguilla anguilla. Both swimming modes are characterised by a wave of undulation that travels over the body in the direction opposite to that of swimming. We observe two major kinematic differences. First, the slope of wave frequency against swimming speed is significantly higher for backward than for forward swi

Characterization of potential spermatogonia biomarker genes in the European eel (Anguilla anguilla).

Identification of specific molecular markers for spermatogonial stem cells in teleost is crucial for enhancing the efficacy of reproductive biotechnologies in aquaculture, such as transplantation and surrogate production in fishes. Since it is not yet possible to distinguish spermatogonial stem cells of European eel (Anguilla anguilla) using specific molecular markers, we isolated spermatogonial cells from immature European eels to find these potential markers. We attempted this by studying three candidate genes: vasa, nanos2, and dnd1. Two vasa (vasa1 and vasa2) genes, nanos2, and dnd1 were i

Phthalate metabolites in the European eel (Anguilla anguilla) from Mediterranean coastal lagoons.

The levels and fate of phthalate metabolites have been poorly evaluated in fish, despite their potential ecotoxicological impacts. The present study aims to characterize the levels of phthalate metabolites in muscle tissue of yellow eels (Anguilla anguilla) from two coastal Mediterranean lagoons, during three sampling periods. Nine phthalate metabolites were detected in >70% of the samples. Slightly higher levels of phthalate metabolites were detected in March and June compared to October, suggesting possible seasonal variations in environmental release and/or phthalate metabolization process

How the European eel (Anguilla anguilla) loses its skeletal framework across lifetime.

European eels (Anguilla anguilla) undertake an impressive 5 000 km long migration from European fresh waters through the North Atlantic Ocean to the Sargasso Sea. Along with sexual maturation, the eel skeleton undergoes a remarkable morphological transformation during migration, where a hitherto completely obscure bone loss phenomenon occurs. To unravel mechanisms of the maturation-related decay of the skeleton, we performed a multiscale assessment of eels' bones at different life-cycle stages. Accordingly, the skeleton reflects extensive bone loss that is mediated via multinucleated bone-reso

Thyroid hormone-induced demineralisation of the vertebral skeleton of the eel, Anguilla anguilla.

The role of thyroid hormones (TH) in bone remodelling is controversial. Indeed, in humans, while they are necessary for normal growth and development, their overproduction can induce important mineral bone loss and osteoporosis. Intense bone resorption is a natural phenomenon also observed in some teleosts, during reproductive migration and fasting. Our work aimed at investigating the effects of chronic treatments with TH (thyroxin, T4 or triiodothyronine, T3) on bone resorption in a migratory fish, the European eel (Anguilla anguilla), a representative species of an ancient group of teleosts

Genomic Footprints of Hybridisation in North Atlantic Eels (Anguilla anguilla and A. rostrata).

Understanding interspecific introgressive hybridisation and the biological significance of introgressed variation remains an important goal in population genomics. European (Anguilla anguilla) and American eel (A. rostrata) represent a remarkable case of hybridisation. Both are panmictic and spawn in partial sympatry in the Sargasso Sea, occasionally producing viable, fertile hybrids, primarily found in Iceland. We studied introgressive hybridisation from American into European eel using whole-genome sequences of 78 individuals, including European, American and 21 putative hybrid eels. Previou

Induced oogenesis of the European eel (Anguilla anguilla L.) in freshwater condition.

European eel is a catadromous fish species, which means that after living in freshwater premature individuals adapt to sea water, and migrate to the Sargasso Sea for spawning. Although male eel can be sexually matured even in freshwater, to date, it was believed that female eel can be matured only in seawater. Here we show that the process of sexual maturation may be induced in freshwater by treating female eels with carp pituitary (GSI = 9.87 ± 1.55%). It is thus proposed that seawater condition is not an obligatory environment for stimulating gametogenesis and for artificial maturation of th

Histochemical analysis of glycoconjugate secretion in the alimentary canal of Anguilla anguilla L.

Conventional histochemical methods as well as lectin-binding techniques were used to study glycoconjugates that are present in the alimentary canal of the European eel (Anguilla anguilla). Specimens from pharynx, oesophagus, stomach and intestine were collected from adult ("silver eel" stage) females. Alcian Blue pH 2.5/PAS and High Iron Diamine/Alcian Blue pH 2.5 reactions were performed to stain neutral and acidic glycoconjugates. In addition, lectin histochemistry was applied to identify acidic glycoconjugates containing O-acylated sialic acids. Finally, the presence of sugar residues in th

Ca++ regulation of paracellular permeability in the middle intestine of the eel, Anguilla anguilla.

The role of Ca++ on the regulation of the paracellular pathway permeability of the middle intestine of Anguilla anguilla was studied by measuring the transepithelial resistance and the dilution potential, generated when one half of NaCl in the mucosal solution was substituted iso-osmotically with mannitol, in various experimental conditions altering extracellular and/or intracellular calcium levels. We found that removal of Ca++ in the presence of ethylene glycol-bis(beta-aminoethyl ether) (EGTA) from both the mucosal and the serosal side, but not from one side only, reduced both the transepit

Effect of insulin in the diet on the growth of European eels (Anguilla anguilla L.).

The effect of oral administration of insulin, in various concentrations, on the growth of European eels (Anguilla anguilla L.) was studied. In order to determine whether the insulin penetrated through the stomach or gills to the blood system, 5 ml insulin, suspended in an 0.6% solution of NaCl, was inserted via the mouth of eels, and the insulin content in the blood measured by radioimmunoassay immediately, and at one and two hours after administration. A control group was given 0.6% NaCl alone. Significantly increased levels of insulin in the blood plasma were found in eels which received hig

Mortality in farmed European eel (Anguilla anguilla) in Italy due to Streptococcus iniae.

BACKGROUND: Streptococcal infections are one of the main causes of fish disease. During the last decade, Streptococcus iniae has become one of the most important aquatic pathogens worldwide, causing high losses in marine and freshwater finfish. Clinical signs in farmed fish include loss of appetite, lethargy and grouping at the bottom of the tank. Gross changes comprise darkening of the skin and haemorrhage at the basis of fins and opercula. To date, S. iniae has been isolated from several wild and farmed fish species but never in the European eel (Anguilla anguilla). In Europe, eel production

Cortisol regulates eel (Anguilla anguilla) aquaporin 3 (AQP3) mRNA expression levels in gill.

Previous studies in eel (Anguilla anguilla) gill have shown that the expression of the aquaporin 3 (AQP3) water and small solute channel is dramatically decreased (mRNA abundance decreased by up to 97%) when these euryhaline fish are acclimated from freshwater (FW) to seawater (SW). However, AQP3 mRNA expression levels in the intestine following SW-acclimation do not change. The SW-acclimating corticosteroid hormone, cortisol has previously been shown to regulate the expression of aquaporins (particularly AQP1) in eel osmoregulatory tissues in a tissue-specific and isoform-specific fashion. Toward surrogate-based conservation: Preservation of European eel (Anguilla anguilla) spermatogonial stem cells.

In this study, we optimized cryopreservation and hypothermic storage protocols for the European eel (Anguilla anguilla) spermatogonial stem cells (SSCs). As the European eel is listed as a critically endangered fish species on the IUCN red list, there is a strong need to develop and advance ex situ conservation strategies beyond the current conservation measures. Cryopreservation of SSCs was done through freezing and vitrification of testicular tissue pieces. Freezing was optimized through five sequential experiments and has yielded SSC post-thaw viability above 50%. The physiological competen

Anguilla anguilla intestinal immune response to natural infection with Contracaecum rudolphii A larvae.

The European eel, Anguilla anguilla, is a major warm-water fish species cultured in North and South Europe. Seventy-one A. anguilla collected between 2010 and 2015 from the Comacchio lagoons were examined. Fish were infected and damaged by larvae (L3) of the nematode Contracaecum rudolphii A, which were encapsulated within the thickness of the intestinal wall and within the external visceral peritoneum (serosa). Conspicuous granulomas, visible at sites of infection, were arranged in a trilayer, formed by a series of concentric whorls. The cells involved in the immune response and their distrib

Aquatic Pollution and Risks to Biodiversity: The Example of Cocaine Effects on the Ovaries of Anguilla anguilla.

Pollution is one of the main causes of the loss of biodiversity, currently one of the most important environmental problems. Important sources of aquatic pollution are illicit drugs, whose presence in waters is closely related to human consumption; their psychoactive properties and biological activity suggest potential adverse effects on non-target organisms, such as aquatic biota. In this study, we evaluated the effect of an environmentally relevant concentration of cocaine (20 ng L−1), an illicit drug widely found in surface waters, on the ovaries of Anguilla anguilla, a species critically e
