One Health (OH) as a biomedical and social movement calls to reorient public health approaches toward more holistic, nonanthropocentric approaches that do not exclude the interests of animals and ecosystems. OH thus urges reexamination, from both scientific and moral perspectives, of the practice of culling pet, farm, or wild animals in the face of a zoonosis. Pandemics such as Covid and monkeypox highlight the need for more rigorous analysis of the justifications traditionally provided to back these culling practices. Such analyses should then ground reasonable OH policies and legislation tha

Animal reservoirs for respiratory and coronavirus have been major health concerns. Zoonosis due to coronavirus involves bats, civet cat, camels, pangolins and now the minks. In the same vein, influenza pandemics occur when a new strain of the influenza virus is transmitted to humans from another animal species. Species thought to be of particular importance in the emergence of new human influenza strains are swine and poultry and these hosts are often culled during epidemics or pandemics. It is often too easy for humans to forget that millions of animals can die or be slaughtered in human pand

INTRODUCTION: This review evaluates the effectiveness of culling and birth control interventions for managing free-roaming dogs (FRD) and cats (FRC) worldwide across key outcome domains-population metrics, zoonotic disease indicators, shelter indicators, public metrics, animal welfare, ecological externalities, and cost-effectiveness-and identifies contextual conditions determining intervention effectiveness.
METHODS: Following PRISMA, we conducted three separate systematic searches in PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus (up to 16 October 2025) addressing culling, birth control, and modelling

The global spread of highly pathogenic avian influenza (H5N1) clade 2.3.4.4b has evolved into a multispecies panzootic that disrupts conventional boundaries between human, animal and environmental health systems. Using Brazil's response as an illustrative case, this article argues that prevailing containment strategies-particularly mass culling-remain ethically insufficient and practically misaligned with the ecological complexity of H5N1 transmission. To clarify the normative foundations of an alternative approach, we introduce a theoretical framework grounded in zoonoethics and global ecolog

Helicopter-based shooting using either a .308 semi-automatic rifle or a semi-automatic 12-gauge shotgun is widely used to manage non-native ungulate populations in Australasia, but the animal welfare outcomes of these two firearms have not been robustly compared. We conducted a randomised field study to compare the animal welfare outcomes of helicopter-based shooting of fallow deer (Dama dama) using a shotgun with three types of lead-based shot (Winchester® 00 Buck, 1 Buck or 4 Buck) relative to a .308 rifle with 135-grain lead-based bullets in New South Wales, Australia, in 2023. All deer tha

Cow longevity directly affects the economic efficiency of dairy herds, as modern systems exhibit low survival and involuntary losses that compromise genetic and financial progress. We aimed to characterize the culling process in US dairy herds, including the main reasons for animal removal. Data from the Council on Dairy Cattle Breeding (CDCB) included 5.6 million records from average 2,630 herds (2006-2017), containing productive, reproductive, and culling information. Total longevity indicators were defined, and cows were stratified by pregnancy status, parity, production level, lactation st

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of vector control and elimination of infected dogs on the incidence of infection with Leishmania chagasi. A randomized community intervention trial was carried out in Teresina between 1995 and 1996. The area was divided in 34 blocks randomically allocated to 4 types of intervention: 1) spraying houses and animal pens with insecticide; 2) spraying houses and eliminating infected dogs; 3) combination of spraying houses and animal pens, and eliminating infected dogs, and 4) only spraying houses. In comparison to blocks receiving only househol

In recent years, there have been important regulatory and management changes in livestock farming in Italy and other European countries. The goal of these changes has been to decrease the use of antimicrobials (antimicrobial stewardship). The objective of this observational study was to explore the potential relationship between the decrease in the use of antimicrobials and the rise in the culling of dairy cattle on 210 farms in the Lodi province. Records of antimicrobials used in dairy herds (measured as the daily defined dose animal for Italy-DDDAit) and culling rates were retrieved from the

Culling is an important management tool in dairy herds, as it affects herd economics and animal welfare. In relation to health, culling is usually studied as a consequence of health disorders, but it can also be regarded as a tool to manage health in the herd by making strategic culling decisions. In this study, we used data from the Danish Cattle Database in herd-wise survival analyses to investigate factors associated with culling, in relation to udder health, in 1,452 dairy herds. The data included milk yield, somatic cell counts (SCC), parity, and different disease related factors with a s

BACKGROUND: Culling is a major cost for dairy farms but also an essential part in managing herd productivity. This study aimed to identify the culling rates of Estonian dairy cows, identify the farmers' stated reasons and risk factors for culling. This observational study used registry data of all cows from herds with ≥20 cow-years in 2013-2015. Cow lactation-level analyses included data of 86,373 primiparous cows from 409 herds and 177,561 lactations of 109,295 multiparous cows from 410 herds. Weibull proportional hazard regression models were used to identify risk factors for culling due to

Selective culling, also known as the "tooth extraction approach", is a strategy for controlling African swine fever (ASF) by removing only sick and suspect animals instead of the entire herd in Vietnam. This method prioritizes preserving healthy animals, particularly valuable breeding pigs. Despite its implementation in various forms, no standardized protocol based on scientific principles has been established. Farms typically adapt this strategy based on their understanding, which can vary significantly. In implementing of selective culling that is not based on scientific principles, there is

Dog-mediated human rabies can be eliminated through mass dog vaccination. Despite leading authorities in human and animal health uniting to advance effective and humane rabies control, some governments resort to lethal methods, which are unethical, often inhumane and ineffective. To end the inhumane culling of dogs in response to rabies, World Animal Protection launched 'Red Collar'; a five-year campaign (2011-2016) that worked with governments to promote the implementation of mass dog vaccination for rabies control. We present the findings from a qualitative evaluation of 'Red Collar', conduc

OBJECTIVE: Production-limiting diseases such as mastitis and lameness are among the most common causes of early culling in dairy cows worldwide. The aim of this systematic literature review was to analyze the effects of these 2 disease complexes on culling risk in dairy cows based on scientific evidence.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The literature search was conducted in accordance with PRISMA guidelines using the databases PubMed, CABI Abstracts, and Web of Science, covering publications from 2000-2024. For each part of the study, the results were analyzed qualitatively and presented descriptively

BACKGROUND: Understanding the effects of herd management practices on the prevalence of multidrug-resistant pathogenic Salmonella and commensals Enterococcus spp. and Escherichia coli in dairy cattle is key in reducing antibacterial resistant infections in humans originating from food animals. Our objective was to explore the herd and cow level features associated with the multi-drug resistant, and resistance phenotypes shared between Salmonella, E. coli and Enterococcus spp. using machine learning algorithms.
METHODS: Randomly collected fecal samples from cull dairy cows from six dairy farms

A survey of ovine reproductive tracts was undertaken in 2 abattoirs in the south west of England, in which 23,536 tracts from nulliparous animals and 9970 tracts from cull ewes were examined. The ovaries were fused in 15 nulliparous animals. In 13 of these animals, 2 ovarian structures could be separately identified macroscopically, whilst in the 2 other animals, a single structure was seen. On histological examination of the ovaries in which 2 structures could be separately identified, the capsules were confluent and formed a septum between them. In the 2 cases with complete ovarian fusion, a

Effectiveness of surveillance and control measures against Rift Valley Fever (RVF) in Mayotte (overseas France) and in continental EU were assessed using mathematical models. Surveillance for early detection of RVF virus circulation implies very low design prevalence values and thus sampling a high number of animals, so feasibility issues may rise. Passive surveillance based on notified abortions in ruminants is key for early warning and at present the only feasible surveillance option. The assessment of vaccination and culling against RVF in Mayotte suggests that vaccination is more effective

OBJECTIVE: To determine the correlations between three bacterial dermatoses in cattle, milk production and bulk-milk somatic cell count (BMSCC).
DESIGN: Field observations in three dairy cattle herds.
METHODS: Milk production, BMSCC, fertility and all herd diseases were recorded by computerised dairy management systems. Each herd was visited twice weekly and the clinical signs, course of diseases and morbidity and culling rates were noted. Bulk-tank milk was sampled twice monthly and analysed for somatic cell count. Bacteriological and histological examinations were carried out from samples

The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of a new heat-killed Mycobacterium avium ssp. paratuberculosis (MAP) vaccine for control of premature culling in tuberculosis-free dairy cattle. Feces and gastrointestinal tissues were collected from 50 vaccinated cows and 38 nonvaccinated cows at slaughter and analyzed by bacteriological culture and histopathology. Vaccination was associated with a significant reduction of the frequency of vaccinated animals with MAP in feces and gut tissues compared with the nonvaccinated animals. In addition, the frequency of vaccinated animals with h

The trial was carried out in a large Hungarian 2000 sow "farrow-to-finish" production unit. Out of a total number of 15,841 evaluated growing/finishing pigs, 1319 pigs died or were emergency-culled and were post-mortem routinely examined. For the purpose of this study the emergency-culling and mortality were recorded into the same category. The average annual emergency-culling/mortality rate was unusual high (8.62%). Five body condition related categories were registered. The majority of the mortality comprised animals of body condition "below average", representing 891 pigs (67.56%) and "aver

Adult cattle in a Queensland dairy herd with a history of deaths from lymphosarcoma were sampled regularly over a 4 year period for the identification of animals with persistent lymphocytosis (PL). Twenty-one of 94 animals that were sampled at least 6 times had PL. At the initial sampling 27% of the animals had lymphocytosis. Culling of haematologically positive animals in the first 18 months of the investigation reduced this to 5.3%, but cessation of the culling programme resulted in a gradual increase in the percentage of animals with lymphocytosis. Four deaths from lymphosarcoma occurred in
