IgG4 response to fur animal allergens among fur workers.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine whether IgG(4) antibodies to allergens in urine extracts from fur animals associated with positive prick tests to the same allergens and with the occurrence of respiratory symptoms among fur workers, especially among highly exposed fur farmers. METHODS: Among the fur workers and among their referents, IgG(4) antibodies to mink and silver fox urine were analysed in three groups; all workers with a positive skin prick test to any fur animal allergen (n=50), all workers who had reported shortness of breath or rhinitis or eye symptoms (n=159), and

Treatment of Allergies to Fur Animals.

Allergy to fur animals is becoming an increasingly common clinical problem in everyday medical practice. Depending on the route of exposure to the allergen, patients present with many, often non-specific symptoms. The most common illnesses among people with allergies to the above-mentioned allergens are as follows: allergic rhinitis, allergic conjunctivitis, atopic bronchial asthma, food allergy, allergic contact dermatitis, and sometimes anaphylactic shock. In recent years, there has been a change in the holistic approach to the treatment of allergy patients. The method of treatment should be

Fur animal botulism hazard due to feed.

To assess the botulism hazard in fur animal feed production, 236 fur animal feed components and feed samples were analysed for Clostridium botulinum by detecting BoNT-encoding genes (botA, botB, botC, botE or botF) by PCR and for sulphite-reducing clostridia (SRC) by iron sulphite agar. The quality of the hazard analysis of critical control points (HACCP) -based in-house control system (IHCS) was evaluated with respect to botulism risk in feed plants (n=32). The overall prevalence of C. botulinum was 13% in different feed components and 5% in feed. The estimated MPN count of C. botulinum in fe

Hypervitaminosis D in fur-bearing animals.

Investigations concerning the effect on fur-bearing animals of large doses of vitamin D3 were carried out. The material comprised 62 animals in all--10 silver foxes, 17 blue foxes and 35 mink (Table II). Daily doses of 5 IU vitamin D3/g body weight for two months did not produce clinical symptoms in the foxes. However, a short while after the dose was increased to 10 IU, the animals showed loss of appetite, had difficulty in moving, were apathetic and developed dark coloured faeces. Analysis of blood serum showed markedly raised calcium values (Table III). Calcium deposits were demonstrated in

First Report of Chlamydia abortus in Farmed Fur Animals.

Chlamydia (C.) abortus, a globally distributed obligate intracellular bacterium, has attracted increasing interest according to its veterinary importance and zoonotic nature. C. abortus can infect a variety of animals and cause foetal loss in livestock resulting in economic loss. In this study, the samples collected from two farms of foxes (n=20), raccoon dogs (n=15) and minks (n=20), were investigated by Chlamydiaceae- and Chlamydia species-specific real-time PCR. The results showed that all the tested foxes (20/20) and raccoon dogs (15/15) harbored Chlamydia spp., while 5% of minks (1/20) we

[Changes in the femur of fur-bearing animals during hypodynamia].

Under conditions of hypodynamia the form and internal architectonics of the femoral bone undergo certain changes. In young animals these changes are of quantitative character without any signs of a manifested destruction. Later on, certain indications of focal resorption appear in the spongy substance, as does partial destruction of the beams. Gradually, definite signs of osteoporosis and osteosclerosis as a result of dystrophic alterations in the osseous tissue develop. These phenomena, though progress with age, nevertheless, develop against the background of noticeable compensatory shifts in

Questionnaire survey of detrimental fur animal epidemic necrotic pyoderma in Finland.

BACKGROUND: In 2007, a previously unrecorded disease, fur animal epidemic necrotic pyoderma (FENP), was detected in farmed mink (Neovision vision), foxes (Vulpes lagopus) and Finnraccoons (Nyctereutes procyonoides) in Finland. Symptoms included severe pyoderma with increased mortality, causing both animal welfare problems and economic losses. In 2011, an epidemiologic questionnaire was mailed to all members of the Finnish Fur Breeders' Association to assess the occurrence of FENP from 2009 through the first 6 months of 2011. The aim was to describe the geographical distribution and detailed cl

Trichinella spiralis in wild animals, cats, mice, rats and farmed fur animals in Finland.

A total of 1 399 samples of wild animals, cats, mice, rats and fur animals were examined for Trichinella larvae during the period 1.1.1982-30.6.1984. Samples were obtained both from the problem area, were Trichinella larvae had been found in pigs, and for comparison from the rest of Finland. The frequency of the infection in wild carnivores, badgers, pine martens, raccoon dogs, foxes and wild mink was significantly higher in the problem area than in the rest of Finland.

Farmed fur animals harbour viruses with zoonotic spillover potential.

Animals such as raccoon dogs, mink and muskrats are farmed for fur and are sometimes used as food or medicinal products1,2, yet they are also potential reservoirs of emerging pathogens3. Here we performed single-sample metatranscriptomic sequencing of internal tissues from 461 individual fur animals that were found dead due to disease. We characterized 125 virus species, including 36 that were novel and 39 at potentially high risk of cross-species transmission, including zoonotic spillover. Notably, we identified seven species of coronaviruses, expanding their known host range, and documented

Is the presence of a fur animal an exacerbating factor of atopic dermatitis in adults?

UNLABELLED: Atopic dermatitis is one of the most common inflammatory dermatoses in children and adults. To date, no clear relationship between the severity of AD and the exposure to dog and guinea pig-derived allergens has been established. AIM: The aim of the study was to assess the association between the specific serum immunoglobulin E levels (against dog and guinea pig) and the grade of skin symptoms measured with the SCORAD and VAS scales in the population of adult patients suffering from atopic dermatitis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study was performed in the group of 47 patients suffe

Sleeping on animal fur is related to asthma outcomes in later childhood.

Animal furs might represent a "proxy" for high and diverse microbial exposures within a critical time window of immune development. We assessed whether sleeping on animal fur shortly after birth is associated with asthma and atopy up to the age of 10 years. LISAplus participants (n=2441) from Munich and Leipzig, Germany, were included in the analysis. Animal fur exposure, cofactors and health outcomes were obtained periodically up to 10 years of age by parental questionnaires. Information on specific IgE to aeroallergens was available at 10 years. Cytokine-producing peripheral T-cells were ass

Epidemiological investigations on Trichinella infections in farmed fur animals of Estonia.

Farming of fur animals represents an important income in Estonia. Even though Trichinella worms does not induce a symptomatic disease in carnivores, the carcasses of skinned animals can increase the biomass of the parasite in the environment, if they are not properly destroyed. The aim of the present survey was to study the prevalence of Trichinella worms in farmed fur animals of Estonia. Of 281 muscle samples from blue foxes (Alopex lagopus), silver foxes (Vulpes vulpes fulva), minks (Mustela vison) and raccoon dogs (Nyctereutes procyonoides), which were collected in eight farms, Trichinella

[Congenital "ectromelia" in fur-bearing animals caused by Orthopoxvirus muris].

Orthopox virus infection is endemic in farms with fur-bearing animals in the Czech Republic (Bohemia and Moravia). This disease is called ectromelia of silver foxes and minks. The infection is congenitally transmitted and manifests itself in reproductive disorders, stillbirth or birth of sick neonates. Adult animals are usually free of clinical symptoms. The infective agent was isolated from recent outbreaks and was identified as a mouse pox virus (Orthopoxvirus muris) by its cultural and immunological characteristics. The significance of this pox virus infection, hitherto not described in Wes

Investigation of Cyclospora spp. in farmed fur animals based on PCR-RFLP.

Cyclospora spp., foodborne intestinal protozoa with potential zoonotic risk, are distributed across the globe. However, their presence in animals bred for fur has not been extensively studied, raising concerns about zoonotic transmission. To assess the prevalence of Cyclospora spp. in fur animals in China, we collected fresh fecal samples from 862 animals, including 352 blue foxes, 275 minks, and 235 raccoon dogs, across multiple provinces. The small subunit (SSU) rRNA gene of Cyclospora spp. was amplified using nested PCR, followed by restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis w

Rabies viruses in specific wild fur animals in northern China, 2017-2019.

In recent years, rabies virus (RABV) has been detected in numerous specific wild fur animals in northern China. Therefore, we performed an epidemiologic investigation of RABV in the main fur animal farming provinces during 2017-2019. The results showed that brain tissue samples from eight animals that presented with central nervous symptoms were positive for rabies virus according to direct fluorescent antibody assays and RT-PCR. The phylogenetic relationships and distributions of the viruses were determined, and the results indicated that they belonged to Cosmopolitan and Arctic-related linea

Association between Fur Animal Necrotizing Pyoderma in breeding farm mink (Neovison vison) and reduced fertility.

BACKGROUND: The disease Fur Animal Necrotizing Pyoderma (FNP) has since 2000 been reported in many fur producing countries including Canada, Finland and Denmark. Development of FNP is characterised by rapidly forming treatment-resistant wounds on paws and in the head region. Economic losses related to FNP have been associated with mortality and decreased fur quality as well as increased veterinary costs. Also it has been suggested that FNP may be associated with reduced production results for breeding mink. The aim of this study was to evaluate if there is an association between FNP lesions in
