Emergence of zoonotic arboviruses by animal trade and migration.

Arboviruses are transmitted in nature exclusively or to a major extend by arthropods. They belong to the most important viruses invading new areas in the world and their occurrence is strongly influenced by climatic changes due to the life cycle of the transmitting vectors. Several arboviruses have emerged in new regions of the world during the last years, like West Nile virus (WNV) in the Americas, Usutu virus (USUV) in Central Europe, or Rift Valley fever virus (RVFV) in the Arabian Peninsula. In most instances the ways of introduction of arboviruses into new regions are not known. Infection

Alveolar macrophage migration inhibition in animals immunized with thermophilic actinomycete antigen.

Intratracheal immunization of rabbits with Micropolyspora faeni, a thermophilic actinomycete known to be a rich source of `farmer's lung hay' antigen leads to development of pulmonary lesions similar to those noted in human hypersensitivity pneumonitis and in antigen induced MIF production by sensitized respiratory tract lymphocytes. MIF release was not specific for the respiratory route of immunization since immunization via the toe pad route using Freund's adjuvant also resulted in antigen induced migration inhibition of alveolar wash cells. If macrophage migration inhibition can be regarded

Transplacentally induced neuronal migration disorders: an animal model for the study of the epilepsies.

Recent clinical and laboratory data suggest that there is a link between neuronal migration disorders (NMD) and increased seizure threshold. To characterize an animal model with features similar to human NMD and to assess seizure susceptibility, NMD were induced in the rat at the time of neuroblastic division (PG15) and three other gestational ages (PG 13, PG14, PG16) by transplacental exposure to methylaxozymethanol (MAM, 25 mg/kg). Offspring pups were monitored for spontaneous and electrographic seizures. At postnatal day 14, randomly selected rat pups were sacrificed for histological examin

Long-term Migration of Breast Biopsy Markers with and without Mitigating Strategies in an Animal Model.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: In the care of patients with breast cancer, it is now common for a radiologist to place biopsy markers in suspicious axillary lymph nodes that are biopsied so that the lymph nodes can be identified for later surgical excision. Migration of markers has been reported, but has only been sparingly evaluated. The objective of this study was to evaluate the migration of biopsy markers in a porcine model using longitudinal X-ray computed tomography (CT) imaging MATERIALS AND METHODS: We report the evaluation of migration of a commercial biopsy marker (Tumark Professional Q)

Characterization of neuronal migration disorders in neocortical structures: I. Expression of epileptiform activity in an animal model.

Hypoxia, ischemia and other forms of brain injury during the pre- and perinatal period may cause neuronal migration disorders which results in irreversible structural modifications. In human neocortex, these malformations have been associated with severe mental retardation, motor dysfunction and the manifestation of therapy-resistant epilepsy. We were interested in analyzing the expression of epileptiform activity in an animal model of neocortical migration disorders. Newborn rats received a focal freeze lesion and were investigated anatomically and in vitro electrophysiologically after surviv

Ischemic stroke outcome after promoting CD4+CD25+ Treg cell migration through CCR4 overexpression in a tMCAO animal model.

The importance of neuroinflammation during the ischemic stroke has been extensively studied. The role of CD4+CD25+ regulatory T (Treg) cells during the recovery phase have shown infarct size reduction and functional improvement, possibly through the mitigation of inflammatory immune responses. We aimed to investigate the molecular factors involved in microglia-Treg cell communication that result in Treg trafficking. First, we observed the migration patterns of CD8+ (cytotoxic) T cells and Treg cells and then searched for chemokines released by activated microglia in an oxygen-glucose deprivati

Mannitol Augments the Effects of Systemical Stem Cell Transplantation without Increasing Cell Migration in a Stroke Animal Model.

BACKGROUND: Mannitol increases blood-brain barrier permeability and can improve the efficiency of systemically administered stem cells by facilitating stem cell entry from the periphery into the injured brain. The aim of this study was to elucidate the neuroprotective effects of a combination of mannitol pretreatment and stem cell transplantation on stroke-induced neural injury. METHODS: The experimental rats were randomly assigned to three groups 24 h after middle cerebral artery occlusion and reperfusion. One group received intravenous (IV) injections of phosphate-buffered saline (vehicle),

The macrophage migration inhibitory factor/CD74 axis in traumatic spinal cord injury: lessons learned from animal and human studies.

Traumatic spinal cord injury (SCI) is a severe condition leading to long-term impairment of motor, sensory, and autonomic functions. Following the initial injury, a series of additional events is initiated further damaging the spinal cord. During this secondary injury phase, both an inflammatory and immune modulatory response are triggered that have damaging and anti-inflammatory properties, respectively. The proinflammatory cytokine macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) and its receptor CD74 have been extensively studied in traumatic SCI. MIF expression is increased in spinal cord tiss

Causes of interspecific variation in avian migration distance.

Migration is an awe-inspiring behavior employed by a diverse suite of taxa throughout the animal kingdom. Avian migration is arguably the most well-known animal behavior and birds vary widely in how far they migrate, but the ecological mechanisms underlying interspecific variation in migration distance remain unclear. We developed a novel set of predictions deduced from seven mechanistic hypotheses proposed to explain interspecific variation in avian migration distance. We then used a Bayesian phylogenetic comparative analysis to test predictions from these seven hypotheses based on migration

How many routes lead to migration? Comparison of methods to assess and characterize migratory movements.

Decreasing rate of migration in several species as a consequence of climate change and anthropic pressure, together with increasing evidence of space-use strategies intermediate between residency and complete migration, are very strong motivations to evaluate migration occurrence and features in animal populations. The main goal of this paper was to perform a relative comparison between methods for identifying and characterizing migration at the individual and population level on the basis of animal location data. We classified 104 yearly individual trajectories from five populations of three

Are Migratory Animals Superspreaders of Infection?

Migratory animals are simultaneously challenged by the physiological demands of long-distance movements and the need to avoid natural enemies including parasites and pathogens. The potential for animal migrations to disperse pathogens across large geographic areas has prompted a growing body of research investigating the interactions between migration and infection. However, the phenomenon of animal migration is yet to be incorporated into broader theories in disease ecology. Because migrations may expose animals to a greater number and diversity of pathogens, increase contact rates between ho

[Leukocyte migration inhibition after experimental trypanosome infection in cattle].

Blood serum from cattle experimentally infected with trypanosomes was tested for its activity influencing granulocyte migration. Pooled porcine granulocytes were used in the migration assay. The inhibitory migration activity observed in serum samples of trypanosome infected animals implies the presence of mediators of cellular immunity. Values of migration indices express reciprocal events of inhibitory and stimulating events in infected animals. This study allowed to follow at least some aspects of the very complex cellular immune system and its functioning. The observed differences in migrat

Monitoring Leukocyte Migration During Atherosclerosis In Vivo.

Transendothelial leukocyte migration is an early event in the progression of vascular inflammation, the underlying molecular mechanism of atherosclerosis. Inflammatory mediators such as adhesion molecules and chemokines are essential in this process. Leukocyte migration into the vascular wall can be monitored by the detection of CD11b-positive immune cells in animal models of atherosclerosis. This chapter will describe an immunohistochemical technique used to evaluate leukocyte migration in vivo.

Anthrax epizootic and migration: persistence or extinction.

In this paper, we use an extension of the deterministic mathematical model of an anthrax epizootic of Hahn and Furniss to study the effects of anthrax transmission, carcass ingestion, carcass induced environmental contamination, and migration rates on the persistence or extinction of animal populations. We compute the basic reproduction number R(0) for the anthrax epizootic model with and without taking into account animal migration. We obtained conditions for an anthrax enzootic region. We demonstrate that decreasing the levels of carcass ingestion by removal of carcases in game reserves, for
