PTSD assistance dogs: concerns for animal well-being, rights, and justice.

PTSD assistance dogs are service dogs trained to assist individuals living with PTSD. A growing body of research links the use of PTSD assistance dogs with substantial benefits for their human partners, including significant reductions in PTSD symptoms, and improvements in family functioning, social integration, and quality of life. However, research on the effect of assistance work on PTSD assistance dogs themselves is notably lacking. This paper aims to address this gap by mapping potential animal welfare and ethical concerns associated with PTSD assistance dog interventions. Moreover, a rig

[Porcine stress syndrome and PSE meat: clinical symptoms, pathogenesis, etiology and animal rights aspects].

A review is given about the clinical symptoms, pathogenesis and aetiology of the porcine stress syndrome, furthermore aspects of animal welfare are discussed. The current breeding programmes of pig industry in Germany in many cases include animals with a mutation of the ryanodine-receptor (RYR-1)-gene--homozygous or heterozygous. This situation is the result of an intensive breeding of pigs during the last decades with the intention of increased lean carcass content and corresponding proceeds. The homozygous pigs are more stress susceptible (porcine stress syndrome) and produce meat of poor qu

Animal left-right asymmetry.

Symmetry is appealing, be it in architecture, art or facial expression, where symmetry is a key feature to finding someone attractive or not. Yet, asymmetries are widespread in nature, not as an erroneous deviation from the norm but as a way to adapt to the prevailing environmental conditions at a time. Asymmetries in many cases are actively selected for: they might well have increased the evolutionary fitness of a species. Even many single-celled organisms are built asymmetrically, such as the pear-shaped ciliate Paramecium, which may depend on its asymmetry to navigate towards the oxygen-ric

Animal models of right heart failure.

Right heart failure may be the ultimate cause of death in patients with acute or chronic pulmonary hypertension (PH). As PH is often secondary to other cardiovascular diseases, the treatment goal is to target the underlying disease. We do however know, that right heart failure is an independent risk factor, and therefore, treatments that improve right heart function may improve morbidity and mortality in patients with PH. There are no therapies that directly target and support the failing right heart and translation from therapies that improve left heart failure have been unsuccessful, with th

[Right heart function and endotoxemia in animals].

We used a chronic instrumented ovine model to investigate right heart function following an endotoxin bolus. Primary aim of the experiments was to elucidate the influence of the right heart on the cardiopulmonary system. Furthermore, we tried a thromboxane synthetase inhibitor as a therapeutical approach. At least we investigated the IR-ANF release, as the endocrinal function of the right heart, in this model. Following the endotoxin administration we observed a massive increase of the pulmonary arterial pressure. As a result of the increased right ventricular afterload right ventricular eject

Tracking Animal Reservoirs of Pathogenic Leptospira: The Right Test for the Right Claim.

Leptospirosis is the most prevalent bacterial zoonosis worldwide and, in this context, has been extensively investigated through the One Health framework. Diagnosis of human leptospirosis includes molecular and serological tools, with the serological Microscopic Agglutination Test (MAT) still being considered as the gold standard. Mammals acting as reservoirs of the pathogen include species or populations that are able to maintain chronic infection and shed the bacteria via their urine into the environment. Animals infected by Leptospira are often identified using the same diagnosis tool as in

Animal model of reversible, right ventricular failure.

BACKGROUND: Heart failure is a leading cause of death but very little is known about right ventricular (RV) failure (RVF) and right ventricular recovery (RVR). A robust animal model of reversible, RVF does not exist, which currently limits research opportunities and clinical progress. We sought to develop an animal model of reversible, pressure-overload RVF to study RVF and RVR. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifteen New Zealand rabbits underwent implantation of a fully implantable, adjustable, pulmonary artery band. Animals were assigned to the control, RVF, and RVR groups (n = 5 for each). For the

Ascites in Animals With Right Heart Failure: Correlation With Lymphatic Dysfunction.

Background Congestive heart failure is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. One of the signs of congestive heart failure is fluid overload including pulmonary edema, peripheral edema, and ascites. The cause of fluid overload remains incompletely understood, and management of these patients continues to be a challenge. The role of lymphatic circulation abnormalities in the cause and pathophysiology of fluid overload also remains unclear. Here we report on a study in a large animal model of right heart failure caused by severe tricuspid regurgitation comparing cardiovascular and

Choosing the right animal model for osteomyelitis research: Considerations and challenges.

Osteomyelitis is a debilitating bone disorder characterized by an inflammatory process involving the bone marrow, bone cortex, periosteum, and surrounding soft tissue, which can ultimately result in bone destruction. The etiology of osteomyelitis can be infectious, caused by various microorganisms, or noninfectious, such as chronic nonbacterial osteomyelitis (CNO) and chronic recurrent multifocal osteomyelitis (CRMO). Researchers have turned to animal models to study the pathophysiology of osteomyelitis. However, selecting an appropriate animal model that accurately recapitulates the human pat

Animal health is often ignored, but indispensable to the human right to health.

Although preventable by vaccines, approximately 60'000 humans die due to canine transmitted rabies annually, mostly in Africa and Asia. The aim of this paper is to advocate for including animal health aspects into considerations of human health and human rights, and for equitable access to rabies vaccination for both animals and humans. An infringement of human - in particular of children's - right to health will be illustrated with the case of rabies and poor dog management in Uganda.

Animal models of NASH: getting both pathology and metabolic context right.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the most common cause of referral to liver clinics, and its progressive form, non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), can lead to cirrhosis and end-stage liver disease. The main risk factors for NAFLD/NASH are the metabolic abnormalities commonly observed in metabolic syndrome: insulin resistance, visceral obesity, dyslipidemia and altered adipokine profile. At present, the causes of progression from NAFLD to NASH remain poorly defined, and research in this area has been limited by the availability of suitable animal models of this disease. In the pas

Unusual injuries on the right hand and forearm caused by unidentified wild animals.

An old man was found dead in a rice paddy with his face down in the water. His right forearm and hand were severely injured and the shapes of injuries were unusual. It was initially suspected that the injuries had been caused by a cultivator placed at the site. However, they proved to be postmortem injuries because vital reactions were not observed. The skin was widely torn away. Some edges of the injuries looked like a bite mark and other parts looked like scratches. There were many parallel injuries on the right forearm and hand and footmark-like injuries on the right hand. They were probabl

Longitudinal Validation of Right Ventricular Pressure Monitoring for the Assessment of Right Ventricular Systolic Dysfunction in a Large Animal Ischemic Model.

UNLABELLED: Right ventricular (RV) dysfunction is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in intensive care and cardiac surgery. Early detection of RV dysfunction may be facilitated by continuous monitoring of RV waveform obtained from a pulmonary artery catheter. The objective is to evaluate the extent to which RV pressure monitoring can detect changes in RV systolic performance assess by RV end-systolic elastance (Ees) following the development of an acute RV ischemic in a porcine model. HYPOTHESIS: RV pressure monitoring can detect changes in RV systolic performance assess by RV Ees follo

Acute Right Ventricular Failure in Animal Models: Evidence, Limitations, and Future Directions.

Acute right ventricular failure (ARVF) is a life-threatening condition commonly encountered in the intensive care unit. The treatment of ARVF profoundly changed in the last years, with a growing number of mechanical circulatory support (MCS) devices that have been deployed in clinical practice to support patients with severe forms of ARVF. However, comparative clinical data addressing the superiority of the different MCS strategies are lacking. Several animal models addressing ARVF have been proposed in the literature, and they have been crucial to increase the knowledge on right ventricular (

Molecular Pathways and Animal Models of Tetralogy of Fallot and Double Outlet Right Ventricle.

Tetralogy of Fallot and double-outlet right ventricle are outflow tract (OFT) alignment defects situated on a continuous disease spectrum. A myriad of upstream causes can impact on ventriculoarterial alignment that can be summarized as defects in either i) OFT elongation during looping morphogenesis or ii) OFT remodeling during cardiac septation. Embryological processes underlying these two developmental steps include deployment of second heart field cardiac progenitor cells, establishment and transmission of embryonic left/right information driving OFT rotation and OFT cushion and valve morph

Validation of an animal model of right ventricular dysfunction and right bundle branch block to create close physiology to postoperative tetralogy of Fallot.

BACKGROUND: In the past 5 years a few number of studies and case reports have come out focusing on biventricular (BiV) stimulation for treatment of congenital heart disease related ventricular dysfunction. The few available studies include a diverse group of pathophysiological entities ranging from a previously repaired tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) to a functional single ventricle anatomy. Patient's status is too heterogeneous to build important prospective study. To well understand the implication of prolonged electromechanical dyssynchrony we performed a chronic animal model that mimics essenti
