Allometric scales underlying animal flight: a mechanics-based approach.

Over the years, numerous studies have attempted to deduce scaling laws for the parameters associated with animal flight. These have been primarily empirical and have, moreover, tended to focus on one of the three volant groups, i.e. birds, bats or insects, with few attempts to seek common scaling behaviours. On the premise that there are underlying fundamental scales enabling animal flight regardless of species, a unified approach based on the mechanics of flight is developed. It is shown that the primary physical phenomena can be described in terms of four morphological parameters, the mass s

A simple frequency-scaling rule for animal communication.

Different animals use widely different frequencies for sound communication, and it is reasonable to assume that evolution has adapted these frequencies to give greatest conspecific communication distance for a given vocal effort. Acoustic analysis shows that the optimal communication frequency is inversely proportional to about the 0.4 power of the animal's body mass. Comparison with observational data indicates that this prediction is well supported in practice. For animals of a given class, for example mammals, the maximum communication distance varies about as the 0.6 power of the animal's

Attitudes to acute pain and the use of pain assessment scales among Spanish small animal veterinarians.

UNLABELLED: Evaluation of acute pain in dogs and cats is the basis for an appropriate treatment and improved well-being. The difficulties involved in pain assessment pose a challenge for veterinarians, and recent findings indicate that the most effective tools available-validated pain assessment scales-may not be widely utilized. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to characterize the level of concern among Spanish veterinarians regarding acute pain in companion animals. Additionally, it sought to determine whether this concern correlates with the utilization of optimal assessment tools. METHODS: A

Balancing the animal affective scales - Can the methodology of human affect balance be translated to other sentient species?

Assessing the welfare of non-human sentient animals is a multifaceted scientific endeavour. A human psychology approach that holds promise for application to animals is affect balance, based on the idea that how one feels most of the time is determined by the balance between the separate dimensions of positive and negative affect. Affect balance has been shown to have profound relationships with mental and physical health and well-being in humans. The aim of this conceptual article is to evaluate whether the affect balance methodology might offer a useful integrative measure of the affective/h

White Paper: An Integrated Perspective on the Causes of Hypometric Metabolic Scaling in Animals.

Larger animals studied during ontogeny, across populations, or across species, usually have lower mass-specific metabolic rates than smaller animals (hypometric scaling). This pattern is usually observed regardless of physiological state (e.g. basal, resting, field, maximally-active). The scaling of metabolism is usually highly correlated with the scaling of many life history traits, behaviors, physiological variables, and cellular/molecular properties, making determination of the causation of this pattern challenging. For across-species comparisons of resting and locomoting animals (but less

Regulation of neural differentiation, synaptic scaling and animal behavior by MeCP2 phophorylation.

Highly expressed in the mammalian brain and widely distributed across the genome, MeCP2 is a key player in recognizing modified DNA and interpreting the epigenetic information encoded in different DNA methylation/hydroxymethylation patterns. Alterations in sequence or copy number of the X-linked human MECP2 gene cause either Rett syndrome (RTT) or MECP2 duplication syndrome. Alterations in MECP2 levels have also been identified in patients with autism. To fully understand the significant role of MECP2 in regulating the development and function of the nervous system, it is important to study al

Attitudes Towards Animals and Calf Disbudding Techniques: A Mixed Methods Study Using the Animal Attitude Scale (AAS-10).

Calf disbudding is a routine practice in the dairy industry to prevent horn growth and reduce the risk of injury to animals and handlers. However, growing public concern about animal welfare has raised questions about the acceptability of common disbudding methods. This study explored public perceptions of caustic paste and hot-iron disbudding using a mixed methods approach. Quantitative survey analyses captured measurable trends while iterative qualitative analysis explored the underlying reasons behind participant's attitudes. A convenience sample with a total of 511 Texas resident participa

Small-scale sheep and cattle enterprises in Scotland: Demographics, animal health, and biosecurity.

Livestock keepers who operate on a small scale in the United Kingdom are often described as either smallholders or hobby farmers; however, this is not always the case. There is another distinct population in Scotland. The crofting system promotes the preservation of a way of life that is significant to the cultural heritage of Scotland, whilst at the same time utilising and maintaining marginal land that could otherwise be deemed of very low productive value. We developed two cross-sectional questionnaire surveys to gather descriptive data about individuals from two populations (crofters and s

Reusing health records from farm animal practices at scale: A potential complementary method of surveillance.

BACKGROUND: Disease in primary care frequently represents a surveillance blind spot, particularly for diseases affecting farm animals. METHODS: Electronic health records (EHRs) were collected from four farm animal veterinary practices in Wales (February 2024‒January 2025) as part of a pilot study. Information collected included species treated, date, owner postcode, products sold and clinical free text. Text mining and topic modelling were used to describe treatments and classify syndromes. RESULTS: In total, 32,799 records were collected. Antimicrobials were prescribed in 32.6% and 63.8% of

BrainWideBench: Benchmarking large-scale pretraining and across-animal transfer in multi-region neural recordings.

Advances in large-scale neural recording have made it possible to collect data across many animals and distributed brain regions, raising the question of whether this scale can be exploited to learn general-purpose neural representations transferable across diverse downstream tasks. Yet, progress toward this goal has been limited by fragmented evaluation protocols and a narrow focus on individual task domains. Here, we present BrainWideBench, a benchmark for evaluating across-animal transfer on multi-region neural recordings, built on the International Brain Laboratory Brainwide Map dataset of

Rat Grimace Scale as a Method to Evaluate Animal Welfare, Nociception, and Quality of the Euthanasia Method of Wistar Rats.

Refinement of experimental procedures in animal research has the objective of preventing and minimizing pain/distress in animals, including the euthanasia period. This study aimed to evaluate pain associated with six methods of euthanasia in Wistar rats (injectable, inhalational, and physical), by applying the Rat Grimace Scale (RGS), comparing the scores, and determining the method with the highest score that might indicate pain for laboratory rodents. Sixty adult male and female Wistar rats were used and assigned to six treatments: pentobarbital, CO2, decapitation, isoflurane, ketamine + xyl

Evaluation of animal model congruence to human depression based on large-scale gene expression patterns of the CNS.

Depression is a complex mental health disorder that is difficult to study. A wide range of animal models exist and for many of these data on large-scale gene expression patterns in the CNS are available. The goal of this study was to evaluate how well animal models match human depression by evaluating congruence and discordance of large-scale gene expression patterns in the CNS between almost 300 animal models and a portrait of human depression created from male and female datasets. Multiple approaches were used, including a hypergeometric based scoring system that rewards common gene expressi

Testing local-scale panmixia provides insights into the cryptic ecology, evolution, and epidemiology of metazoan animal parasites.

When every individual has an equal chance of mating with other individuals, the population is classified as panmictic. Amongst metazoan parasites of animals, local-scale panmixia can be disrupted due to not only non-random mating, but also non-random transmission among individual hosts of a single host population or non-random transmission among sympatric host species. Population genetics theory and analyses can be used to test the null hypothesis of panmixia and thus, allow one to draw inferences about parasite population dynamics that are difficult to observe directly. We provide an outline

Large-scale whole-genome sequencing of animal clinical Salmonella enterica demonstrates relatedness to human cases.

Since 2017, the Veterinary Laboratory Investigation and Response Network (Vet-LIRN) has conducted monitoring of antibiotic-resistant bacteria from sick animals, collecting a diverse set of bacterial pathogens from various animal species. Isolates undergo antimicrobial susceptibility testing, with a subset undergoing whole-genome sequencing (WGS). For this work, we sequenced and analyzed 3443 Salmonella enterica genomes collected by thirty veterinary diagnostic laboratories from 2017 to 2025 as part of Vet-LIRN's antimicrobial resistance (AMR) monitoring. While the majority of these clinical is

How facial expressions reveal acute pain in domestic animals with facial pain scales as a diagnostic tool.

The growing interest in managing and recognizing pain in animals has led to the search for more sensitive methods to evaluate it, especially because some species conceal any visible changes associated with pain or are not easily assessed. Research has shown that an animal's facial expression changes when exposed to painful stimuli. Thus, developing several pain scales (grimace scales) in species such as horses, cattle, pigs, sheep, donkeys, rabbits, rats, mice, and cats has helped to improve the study of pain in veterinary medicine. The possibility of using facial expression as an indicator of

Translating dosages from animal models to human clinical trials--revisiting body surface area scaling.

Body surface area (BSA) scaling has been used for prescribing individualized dosages of various drugs and has also been recommended by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration as one method for using data from animal model species to establish safe starting dosages for first-in-human clinical trials. Although BSA conversion equations have been used in certain clinical applications for decades, recent recommendations to use BSA to derive interspecies equivalents for therapeutic dosages of drug and natural products are inappropriate. A thorough review of the literature reveals that BSA conversions
