Substitutes for endangered medicinal animal horns and shells exposed by antithrombotic and anticoagulation effects.

AIM OF THE STUDY: Cornu Saigae Tataricae (antelope horn), Manis Squama (pangolin scale), Cornu Cervi Pantotrichum (velvet antler) and Cornu Bovis grunniens (yak horn) are valuable medicinal animal horns and shells (MAHS). As the major source of biological agents and ethnodrugs, MAHS show pretty good bioactivities. However, with the increased demand for MAHS, some of the medicinal resources are endangered, and there has been a concomitant increase in the prevalence of adulterated or impostor MAHS. It is of great significance to exploit the substitutes for endangered medicinal animal resources.

Core-shell (polyethylene glycol/silk) scaffold containing microfluidic synthesis of curcumin loaded chitosan nanoparticles as a wound healing agent in animal full-thickness injuries.

Wounds refer to physical injuries in which the integrity of the skin or other body organs is disturbed. Wound care includes proper management and treatment of the injuries to promote healing while avoiding infection. Here, a core-shell scaffold is developed comprising polyethylene glycol/silk fibroin-chitosan nanoparticles loaded with curcumin. Chitosan nanoparticles and PEG/Silk fibrous scaffold were synthesized by a microfluidic system and electrospinning technique, respectively. TEM, DLS, and FTIR techniques were used to examine the nanoparticles; whereas nanofibers were characterized by SE

3D Printing and Dissolution Testing of Novel Capsule Shells for Use in Delivering Acetaminophen.

Individualized drug delivery improves drug efficacy and safety for patients. To implement individualized drug delivery, patient-specific tailored dosages produced on a small scale are needed. However, current pharmaceutical manufacturing is not suitable for personalized dosage forms. Although convenient to deliver various drugs, current gelatin capsules using animal collagen protein have many limitations, such as releasing drugs too fast and incompatibility with some diets. In contrast, 3D printed capsules have great potential to advance individualized treatments. In this paper, we 3D printed

Resource Utilization of Peanut Shells: Nutritional Characteristics, Regulation of Antinutritional Factors, and Application Potential in Livestock and Poultry Production.

In agricultural production, peanut shells, as a by-product of peanut processing, are often discarded. However, they are rich in fiber, crude protein, carbohydrates, minerals (such as calcium and phosphorus), as well as bioactive substances like polyphenols and flavonoids, thus having potential feeding value. Currently, the application potential of peanut shells in the field of animal nutrition has not been fully explored. The lack of comprehensive and systematic studies on their nutritional composition, digestive and metabolic characteristics, and optimal addition levels in different animal pr

Shell damage and mandible mechanics in the ant Messor wasmanni.

Ant middens represent accumulations of discarded materials and provide insight into colony-level foraging and processing behavior. While middens of granivorous ants are typically dominated by plant material, animal remains are occasionally present, yet their origin and mechanical basis remain poorly understood. Here, we investigated the occurrence of gastropod shells in an external midden of the harvester ant Messor wasmanni and evaluated ant mandible mechanics to provide some background for shell fracturing. Midden material was collected during three sampling events and sorted by material typ

Feasibility of near-infrared spectroscopy for species identification and parasitological diagnosis of freshwater snails of the genus Biomphalaria (Planorbidae).

Near Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS) has been applied in epidemiological surveillance studies of insect vectors of parasitic diseases, such as the Dengue's mosquitoes. However, regarding mollusks, vectors of important worldwide helminth diseases such as schistosomiasis, fascioliasis and angiostrongyliasis, NIRS studies are rare. This work proposes to establish and standardize the procedure of data collection and analysis using NIRS applied to medical malacology, i.e., to mollusk vectors identifications. Biomphalaria shells and live snails were analyzed regarding several operational aspects, such

Cognitive ethology of nest building in a shell-dwelling cichlid.

Across animal taxa, nest-building behavior is performed using a generalizable and flexible action sequence. In order to accomplish its goal (a stable nest), the brain appears to compare intermediate steps in the process to stored neural representations that are reminiscent of cognitive templates. Deviations from these templates drive progress, preferences, and corrections in the execution of this behavior. Here, we investigated the stereotypy vs. plasticity of nest building by the cichlid Lamprologus ocellatus, a fish species that manipulates abandoned snail shells to build shelters for breedi

Preserving Shell Integrity of Microgastropods With the Nondestructive HotSHOT DNA Extraction Method.

Gastropods rank among the most species-rich animal classes, accounting for 5% (4-8) of all described animal species with about 1/3 of microgastropods (< 5 mm in size). DNA extraction from preserved microgastropods retracted into their shells is challenging because established methods usually damage the shell. This study tests the HotSHOT alkaline lysis method as a nondestructive protocol for small ethanol-preserved gastropods. Using a brief lysis step at high pH and temperature, we achieved effective DNA extraction suitable for COI barcode amplification while preserving shell integrity and fra

Microplastics disrupt hermit crab shell selection.

Microplastics (plastics < 5 mm) are a potential threat to marine biodiversity. However, the effects of microplastic pollution on animal behaviour and cognition are poorly understood. We used shell selection in common European hermit crabs (Pagurus bernhardus) as a model to test whether microplastic exposure impacts the essential survival behaviours of contacting, investigating and entering an optimal shell. We kept 64 female hermit crabs in tanks containing either polyethylene spheres (n = 35) or no plastic (n = 29) for 5 days. We then transferred subjects into suboptimal shells and placed the

Display Modes of Personal Ornaments in the Upper Palaeolithic Sites of Istria, Croatia.

In the attempt to understand culture and social behavior of prehistoric populations, findings of personal ornaments are of particular interest. Personal ornaments in their formal expressions (marine shells and snails, river snails, animal teeth, modified animal bones etc.) not only point to an universal idea of decoration and aesthetic sensibility, but may also reveal contact zones and communication paths. Perforated animal teeth, mostly deer canines, reveal us not only symbolic, but also some important sociocultural aspects of behavior of prehistoric populations. In order to test whether ther

Variations in the carapace shape of whip spiders (Arachnida: Amblypygi).

Morphological studies often need to reference body size to correctly characterise the shape of organisms. In arthropods, the most commonly used reference for this is the length or width of the carapace, thorax, or the prosoma in the case of chelicerates. However, in the case of animals with unlimited growth, such as whip spiders, this measure could be irrelevant if growth is allometric. In this study, we analyse the ontogenetic modifications in prosoma outline shape in whip spiders during growth and compare the differences in shape between species. Differences are important for the relative pr

Role of soft bi-layer coating on the protection of turtle carapace.

The turtle carapace is a biological armor exhibiting enhanced protection performance. Despite considerable efforts to characterize the structure-property relations of the turtle carapace, how the design of soft keratin-collagen bi-layer coating contributes to the protection of this biological armor remains largely unknown. In this study, calculations are carried out for fracture of the turtle carapace subjected to impact loading. The dynamic fracture of the bone layer, plastic deformation of the keratin-collagen bi-layer, and delamination at the keratin-collagen and collagen-bone interfaces ar

Antiallergic effects of pigments isolated from green sea urchin (Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis) shells.

This study was undertaken to evaluate possible antiallergic effects of an extract of pigments from green sea urchin (Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis) shells. Effects were studied on animal models - guinea pig ileum contraction, rabbit eyes allergic conjunctivitis, and rabbit local skin irritation. The extract significantly reduced, in a dose-dependent manner, the histamine-induced contractions of the isolated guinea pig ileum with ID50 =1.2 µg/mL (in equivalents of spinochrome B), had an inhibitory effect on the model of ocular allergic inflammation surpassing the reference drug olopatadine,

Behavioral sensitization to delta 9-tetrahydrocannabinol and cross-sensitization with morphine: differential changes in accumbal shell and core dopamine transmission.

Although cannabinoid-induced behavioral sensitization and cross-sensitization with opiates has been recently demonstrated, no information is available on the associated state and responsiveness of dopamine (DA) transmission in the nucleus accumbens (NAc) shell and core. In this study we investigate by means of dual probe microdialysis, the effect of exposure to a sensitizing regimen of Delta(9)-tetrahydrocannabinol (Delta(9)-THC) and morphine on the extracellular concentrations of DA under basal conditions and after challenge with Delta(9)-THC and morphine in the NAc shell and core. Sustainable Valorization of Biogenic Waste for Bone Repair and Regeneration: A Comprehensive Review of Eggshell and Aquatic Biomaterials.

Bone loss represents a significant clinical burden that has driven the development of improved orthopedic graft substitutes. Although current grafting options, including autografts, allografts, and xenografts, have demonstrated considerable therapeutic potential, their widespread application is constrained by limitations such as donor scarcity, limited availability, and associated clinical risks. Consequently, biologically derived materials, including avian eggshells and marine bivalve shells, have emerged as promising alternative sources to produce bone precursor materials and next-generation

Ploidy is associated with multielemental reorganization across soft and mineralized body compartments.

Polyploidy alters nuclear DNA content, gene dosage and cellular organization, but its consequences for organismal chemistry remain poorly resolved, particularly in animals. Because nucleic acids and associated cellular machinery require coordinated allocation of multiple elements, ploidy-associated differences may extend beyond the well-established consequences for body phosphorus content to broader multielemental organization. We tested this hypothesis in the New Zealand mudsnail (Potamopyrgus antipodarum), which features within-population ploidy polymorphism, and exhibits strong compartmenta

Preparation and Application of Nature-inspired High-performance Mechanical Materials.

Natural materials are valued for their lightweight properties, high strength, impact resistance, and fracture toughness, often outperforming human-made materials. This paper reviews recent research on biomimetic composites, focusing on how composition, microstructure, and interfacial characteristics affect mechanical properties like strength, stiffness, and toughness. It explores biological structures such as mollusk shells, bones, and insect exoskeletons that inspire lightweight designs, including honeycomb structures for weight reduction and impact resistance. The paper also discusses the fl

Designed for the enhancement of structure mechanostability and strength: Suture-serrate margins of bivalve shells.

Through biological evolution, bivalve mollusks developed shells to improve the utilization of metabolic energy and provide protection against external threats. In addition to the mechanical optimization of the microstructure, the design of the macroscopic shape of a bivalve shell naturally becomes a potential approach to achieving the aforementioned purposes. While the functions of some features of mollusk shells have been studied, the role of the suture-serrate margins, a common morphology of bivalve shell edges, in the global mechanical behaviors of bivalve shells requires further exploratio
