Abyssal polychaetes are usually difficult to be identified because they are small, their body patterns differ from their shallow water relatives, their delicate bodies are often damaged during sampling and sieving, and their taxonomy is in need of revision. Members of the family Fauveliopsidae Hartman, 1971 are widespread in deep ocean basins and they follow the above statements. In this contribution, we present a revision of all available type and non-type material for the family. Our objective is to provide keys to identify genera and species, as well as standardized diagnoses, and illustrat

BACKGROUND: Myzostomids are marine annelids, nearly all of which live symbiotically on or inside echinoderms, chiefly crinoids, and to a lesser extent asteroids and ophiuroids. These symbionts possess a variety of adult body plans and lifestyles. Most described species live freely on the exterior of their hosts as adults (though starting life on the host inside cysts), while other taxa permanently reside in galls, cysts, or within the host's mouth, digestive system, coelom, or gonads. Myzostomid lifestyles range from stealing incoming food from the host's food grooves to consuming the host's t

The polynoid genus Chaetacanthus Seidler, 1922 currently includes three nominal species provided with parapodial branchiae. Members of this taxon have palps with longitudinal rows of papillae, notochaetae abundant and neurochaetae spinulose. Most Chaetacanthus species were originally described as belonging to Lepidonotus Leach, 1816, and some of them were later regarded as subjective synonyms of Iphione magnifica Grube, 1876, the type species for Chaetacanthus. This species was described from the Caribbean Sea and later recorded for the tropical Eastern Pacific. After the supposed Amphi-Americ

AbstractThe abilities of sabellariid annelids to regenerate missing anterior or posterior body regions are not well understood. We described regeneration ability in the sabellariid Phragmatopoma californica, carrying out amputations in three locations (the opercular region, the middle of the abdomen, and the posterior of the abdomen) and observing survivorship and regeneration in the resulting body fragments for 6 weeks. Both anterior and posterior regeneration were possible, with fragments missing the head and part of the opercular region regenerating missing anterior structures and fragments

Most species of the bone-devouring marine annelid, Osedax, display distinct sexual dimorphism with macroscopic sedentary females rooted in bones and free-living microscopic dwarf males. The paedomorphic male resembles the non-feeding metatrochophore larva in size, presence of eight pairs of chaetae, and a head ciliation potentially representing a residual prototroch. The male development may thus uniquely reiterate and validate the theoretical heterochrony process "progenesis", which suggests that an accelerated sexual maturation and early arrest of somatic growth can lead to a miniaturized an

Medical leeches have been widely used in medical applications and treatments for millennia. Studies on the salivary glands of blood-sucking leeches have focused on their bioactive secretions and mechanisms of action, with little attention to ultrastructure. In this study, we examined dissected embryonic and adult Hirudo verbana salivary glands by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Gland cells of embryos were physically separated while adults displayed highly developed cell bunches in which each cell was connected to others by fine channels. Channels from each bunch combined to form a larger c

This paper presents information on the organization of the midgut and its epithelium ultrastructure in juvenile and adult specimens of Piscicola geometra (Annelida, Hirudinea), a species which is a widespread ectoparasite found on the body and gills and in the mouth of many types of fish. The analysis of juvenile nonfeeding specimens helped in the explanation of all alterations in the midgut epithelium which are connected with digestion. The endodermal portion (midgut) of the digestive system is composed of four regions: the esophagus, the crop, the posterior crop caecum, and the intestine. Th

Since its description from the Galapagos Rift in the mid-1980s, Archinome rosacea has been recorded at hydrothermal vents in the Pacific, Atlantic and Indian Oceans. Only recently was a second species described from the Pacific Antarctic Ridge. We inferred the identities and evolutionary relationships of Archinome representatives sampled from across the hydrothermal vent range of the genus, which is now extended to cold methane seeps. Species delimitation using mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) recovered up to six lineages, whereas concatenated datasets (COI, 16S, 28S and ITS1

In this study, the morphological characteristics of the medicinal leech Hirudo verbana (Annelida, Hirudinea) were examined. Mitochondrial CO1 gene sequences of representative specimens were recorded in GenBank, and macroscopic, histological, and SEM analyses of remaining representatives were made. The species had trignathous jaws, each half-moon in shape. There were 75-80 denticles on the left jaw with their tips medially, while the right jaw had 30-34 equilateral triangular denticles, all arranged in a single row. The anterior jaw had 35-40 blunt-tipped denticles similarly arranged in a singl

Representatives of the extant family Oenonidae (Annelida, Eunicida) have a prionognath jaw apparatus, with maxillae having forceps-like elements, a number of asymmetrical dentate plates and long slender carriers, which is characteristic of some fossil forms known from the Paleozoic epoch. Therefore, data on the fine structure and functional morphology of Oenonidae jaws are helpful for the interpretation of fossil materials. The fine structure of the jaw apparatus and the ventral pharyngeal organ is studied in one species of the Oenonidae (Annelida)-Drilonereis cf. filum. The material was colle

Two new species of the new genus Decimodrilus gen. n. are described in this paper from oak forests of South Korea using a combination of classical morphology and DNA-based molecular taxonomy. A characteristic trait of the new genus is the occurrence of the intestinal diverticula in segments IX-X. The main morphological features of the new genus are: 4-5(6) straight chaetae per bundle, origin of dorsal vessel in clitellar region, anteseptale of nephridia consisting of funnel only, coelomocytes only mucocytes, oesophageal appendages absent, spermathecae united proximally and connected jointly wi

The symbiotic polychaetes of the genus Osedax living on the bones of whale carcasses have become known as bone-eating worms. It is believed that whale bones are the source of nutrition for those gutless worms and that fatty acids are produced by their symbionts and transferred to the host. However, the symbionts are of the heterotrophic group Oceanospirillales and as such are not able to synthesize organic carbon de novo. Also, they are not housed in close contact to the bone material. We studied the ultrastructure of the integument overlying the symbiont housing trophosome in the ovisac regio

Erpobdellid leeches are morphologically similar to each other and thus cause confusion in taxonomic identification. In particular, annuli, colour and eye patterns are very close across species which creates difficulties in external morphological resolution. Here we describe six new species of Erpobdellidae collected from North America and Europe based on morphological and molecular criteria. New species are formally designated Erpobdella farmensis sp. nov., Erpobdella haddonensis sp. nov., Erpobdella madenensis sp. nov., Dina sivricensis sp. nov., Dina takasensis sp. nov. and Trocheta kesirven

The Changbai Mountain in northeast China harbours a species-rich enchytraeid fauna, and ca. 50 species of 11 genera have been reported so far from its well-preserved ecosystems. Herein, we add two new species of Mesenchytraeus into this enchytraeid list. Both members belong to the lineage of Mesenchytraeus with enlarged ventral chaetae. Mesenchytraeus spermatoglomeratus sp. nov. is characterized by the presence of enlarged chaetae in V-VI and XI (2 per bundle), five pairs of preclitellar nephridia (VI/VII-X/XI), sperm sacs containing curly ball-shaped sperm bundles, spermathecae without divert

Limnodrilus species are annelid worms distributed worldwide in various freshwater sediments. The systematics of Limnodrilus has chiefly been based on morphology, but the genus has not been subject to any closer phylogenetic studies over the past two decades. To reconstruct the evolutionary history of Limnodrilus, and to assess the monophyly of this genus and its systematic position within the subfamily Tubificinae (Annelida: Clitellata: Naididae), 45 Limnodrilus specimens, representing 19 species, and 35 other naidid species (representing 24 genera) were sampled. The data consisted of sequence

1. In Platynereis dumerilii, the capacity for anterior regeneration is rather limited: only prostomial regenerates can be developed, provided that a part of the original prostomium is leftin situ. At best, the regenerate represents a complete prostomium, but reduced in size. In most cases however, asymmetrical or deficient development of palpae, antennae and eyes is observed. Sometimes, multiple eye-anlagen are produced. The proportion of deficiencies increases with the quantity of prostomial tissue removed. 2. As demonstrated by the simultaneous emergence of typical posterior regenerates, the

Caobangia billeti is an aberrant shell-burrowing annelid with a phoronid-like body plan and U-shaped digestive tract, an anterior anus on the dorsal side near the head, and reduced metamerism. The segmental dissepiments in C. billeti are absent, but the circulatory system is complex and consists of numerous lacunae and vessels. We asked the question how this modified circulatory system compares to that of other Sabellida. To that end, we collected C. billeti from the type locality and for the first time provide a detailed morphological investigation of these worms using both electron (TEM) and

BACKGROUND: Syllids are a species rich annelid family possessing remarkable regenerative ability, which is not only the response after traumatic injury, but also a key step during the life cycle of several syllid taxa. In these animals the posterior part of the body becomes an epitoke and is later detached as a distinct unit named stolon. Such a sexual reproductive mode is named schizogamy or stolonization. The prostomium and the proventricle, a modified foregut structure, have been proposed to have a control function during this process, though the concrete mechanisms behind it have never bee

The Three Parallel Rivers region is not only an important World Natural Heritage area but also one of the hotspots of world biodiversity with many endemic organisms. However, little is known about the soil fauna of this region, and nothing about enchytraeids. Here we describe two species from the Laojun Mountain, one of the eight eminent mountain chains in this region, Chamaedrilus cf. ozensis Torii, 2015 and Mesenchytraeus laojunensis sp. nov. The latter belongs to a group of Mesenchytraeus species characterized by spermathecae with one ampullar diverticulum and a communication with the oesop

Symbiotic relationships between polychaetes and marine invertebrates are well-documented, with echinoderms-primary starfish and sea cucumbers-as common hosts and sea urchins being more rarely involved. Although many sea urchins possess venomous spines that are effective defenses and make them suitable hosts for symbionts, the dense packing of these spines difficult hosting symbiotic polychaetes. In this study, we describe two new genera and species of polynoid polychaetes found in association with two different species of sea urchins, collected through dredging from Sagami Bay, Japan.
