The recent outbreaks of mosquito-borne diseases highlighted the pivotal importance of mosquito vector control in tropical areas worldwide. Several strategies have been developed to control vector populations and disease transmission in endemic areas. The steps to obtain natural active compounds involve the pre-selection in a biological model and subsequently evaluation on specific models. The present study reports the evaluation of 35 extracts, fractions, and essential oils obtained from five species from the Annonaceae family on Artemia salina and Culex quinquefasciatus. The A. salina results

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Xylopia staudtii is a medicinal plant which fruits are traditionally used in western Cameroon as a spice in the preparation of soups known for their abdominal cramp relieving properties. Often identified as Xylopia africana, its bark is used in the treatment of dysentery in Mont Cameroun localities. This plant could therefore contain active ingredients against intestinal pathogens, including Shigella spp, which are responsible of the deathly dysenteric diarrhoea.
AIM OF THE STUDY: This study aims to assess the efficacy of the hydroethanolic extract from Xylopia

Annonaceae fruits such as soursop (Annona muricata) may worsen symptoms of Parkinson's disease (PD) in tropical regions. Here, we investigate whether PD is more severe in an Annonaceae-exposed compared with a nonexposed population. Motor and cognitive symptoms of two PD groups (Caribbean, N = 74; mainland France, N = 104) were compared after imputation, propensity matching, and multivariate adjustment according to age, disease duration, education, and dopaminergic therapy. Ninety-six percent of Caribbean (71/74) but none of interviewed mainland France (0/20) PD patients had been exposed to Ann

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Embryo and seed development are essential for the reproductive success of flowering plants. However, these processes remain underexplored in the family Annonaceae, which belongs to the early-divergent angiosperm Magnoliid clade, and is characterized by the distinctive feature of ruminations in the seeds. To fill this knowledge gap, we conducted a study to characterize the embryogeny and seed development of Asimina triloba ('pawpaw'), the northernmost species of the mainly tropical family Annonaceae.
METHODS: We performed a comprehensive histological examination of embryog

Several acetogenins, characteristic of the Annonaceae, have been found to exhibit pesticidal and feeding-deterrent activities against a variety of pests and are undergoing commercial development as pesticides. The sensitizing potential of one of these plants, pawpaw, Asimina triloba Dunal, was examined in the current study. The potential of Fraction F020 (a pesticidal crude extract of pawpaw stem bark) to sensitize and elicit an allergic contact dermatitis response was determined by using a modified guinea pig maximization test (GPMT). Fraction F020 is a weak sensitizer and the active compound

A new cauliflorous species of the pantropical genus Xylopia (Annonaceae) is described from the Amazon Basin. Xylopia rubrolineata sp. nov., is shown to be distinct from X. ochrantha, with which it had previously been confused. On the basis of its morphology, Xylopia rubrolineata is inferred to belong to a small subclade of X. sect. Xylopia. A review of cauliflory in the genus indicated that the evolution of trunciflorous cauliflory was limited in time and place, occurring in only nine of ca. 220 species, all in two subclades of X. sect. Xylopia and confined to the Amazon Basin and Brazilian At

INTRODUCTION: Visceral leishmaniasis is endemic in 88 countries, with a total of 12 million people infected and 350 million at risk. In the search for new leishmanicidal agents, alkaloids and acetogenins isolated from leaves of Annona squamosa and seeds of Annona muricata were tested against promastigote and amastigote forms of Leishmania chagasi.
METHODS: Methanol-water (80:20) extracts of A. squamosa leaves and A. muricata seeds were extracted with 10% phosphoric acid and organic solvents to obtain the alkaloid and acetogenin-rich extracts. These extracts were chromatographed on a silica ge

Aging is a complex biological process characterized by progressive molecular and cellular changes that increase susceptibility to chronic diseases, including cancer. Prostate cancer (PCa) is strongly associated with advanced aging and is the second most frequently diagnosed cancer in men worldwide, with an estimated 1.5 million new cases annually. Aging-related processes such as oxidative stress, chronic inflammation, mitochondrial dysfunction, and metabolic reprogramming are closely involved in PCa. Therefore, elucidating the biological mechanisms underlying aging and identifying factors capa

BACKGROUND: Acetogenins from Annonaceae species are widely recognized for their potent cytotoxic and antitumor properties. Some acetogenin derivatives, such as bullatacin, have been reported to impair mitochondrial function, including inhibition of mitochondrial respiratory chain complex I. However, the cytotoxic effects of acetogenin derivatives isolated from Porcelia macrocarpa in leukemia cells remain poorly explored, as do the mitochondrial mechanisms underlying their biological activity.
PURPOSE: The present study aimed to evaluate the cytotoxic potential of three acetogenins, namely (2S

BACKGROUND: Malaria, trypanosomiasis and leishmaniasis have an overwhelming impact in the poorest countries in the world due to their prevalence, virulence and drug resistance ability. Currently, there is inadequate armory of drugs for the treatment of malaria, trypanosomiasis and leishmaniasis. This underscores the continuing need for the discovery and development of new anti-protozoal drugs. Consequently, there is an urgent need for research aimed at the discovery and development of new effective and safe anti-plasmodial, anti-trypanosomal and anti-leishmanial drugs.
METHODS: Bioassay-guide
