Anomia is a complex, commonly occurring symptom of aphasia with different underlying causes. A number of behavioral approaches to rehabilitation of anomia have been described. Some are restitutive in nature and attempt to reactivate lexical-semantic or phonological representations to improve word retrieval. Others are intended to reorganize language functions by engaging alternative cognitive systems to mediate word retrieval or by exploiting residual abilities to circumvent the impairment. A better appreciation of the characteristics of an individual's naming deficit may assist the clinician

This pilot study explored the feasibility of in-home teletreatment for patients with post-stroke anomia. Three participants over 65 years of age suffering from post-stroke anomia were treated in this pre/post-intervention case study. They received 12 speech therapy teletreatments (two sessions/week for 6 weeks) aimed at improving confrontation naming skills. Half of the failed items from a set of 120 preselected stimuli were trained during treatment (Block A-trained stimuli) while the other half served as controls (Block B-untrained stimuli). Variables measured were: 1) efficacy of treatment (

We herein report the case of a patient who showed pure anomia and amnesia caused by hemorrhage in the left thalamus, involving the anterior, ventral anterior, and mediodorsal nuclei. It was revealed that the anomia was characterized by impaired retrieval of object names, which was more pronounced in artificial objects, and abundant perseveration, whereas the amnesia was mild and limited to daily routine events, which was made clear from the results of an episodic memory scale. Detailed lesion localization and literature review revealed that a combination of pure anomia and amnesia can occur in

PURPOSE: The aim of this scoping review was to summarize treatment characteristics (with a focus on treatment ingredients), participant demographic characteristics, and outcomes in the research literature for phonological treatment for anomia.
METHOD: Relevant articles reporting on phonological treatment for anomia in acquired aphasia were identified by a librarian through a comprehensive database search as well as citation chasing of five articles. Title and abstract screening, full-text screening, and data extraction related to the research questions were completed in Covidence by two resea

The purpose of this study was to investigate changes in the spatial distribution of cortical activity associated with anomia treatment in three persons with aphasia. Participants underwent three fMRI sessions before and after a period of intensive language treatment focused on object naming. The results revealed bilateral hemispheric recruitment associated with improved ability to name items targeted in treatment. This is the first study to employ multiple pre- and post-treatment fMRI sessions in the study of treatment-induced recovery from aphasia and has implications for future studies of br

Recent studies have reported enhanced performance on language tasks induced by non-invasive brain stimulation, i.e., repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), or transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), in patients with aphasia due to stroke or Alzheimer's disease (AD). The first part of this article reviews brain stimulation studies related to language recovery in aphasic patients. The second part reports results from a pilot study with three chronic stroke patients who had non-fluent aphasia, where real or placebo rTMS was immediately followed by 25 minutes of individualise

South Africa, as a multilingual country, offers the opportunity for examining the interaction between aphasic symptomatology and the parameters of language. Effective intervention techniques depend on an understanding of clinical linguistics. This article describes an intervention study with two Sesotho-speaking individuals with anomia. Sesotho as a noun class and syllable-timed language offers the opportunity to study the influence of cueing techniques, which are based on such linguistic parameters. Word lists were designed using non-aphasic participants and three cueing techniques for anomia

Observation of a traumatic aphasia in a young man. After a coma and a period of mental confusion, language difficulties are limited, during a few weeks, to a severe global deficit in reading and naming. Meanwhile objects and pictures are perfectly recognized and the meaning of some words can be understood correctly. The commentary is made with reference to previous reports of similar case histories. Clinical and neuropsychological data suggest a focal lesion in the left temporal lobe, probably on the 2nd and the 3rd gyri.

Naming decline is one of the most common symptoms of primary progressive aphasia (PPA). Most studies on anomia in PPA are performed without taking into account PPA variants, especially for action naming. Only limited data are available for the neuroanatomical basis of anomia considering differences in the pathogenesis of PPAs. The aim of our study is to investigate the associations between anomia severity for both noun and verb naming and gray matter (GM) atrophy, as well as accompanying functional connectivity (FC) changes in three PPA variants. A total of 17 patients with non-fluent (nfvPPA)

A treatment programme for AK, an anomic patient with semantic dementia is described. The programme was based on home practice and resulted in re-learning the names of some objects AK could not name and/or comprehend prior to the treatment. The effects of treatment were still present one month post-treatment for items that AK could not name but could comprehend prior to treatment. In addition to items that AK could not name, items that she could both understand and name were also included in the programme. This allowed us to evaluate the influence of practice on the retention of words that appe

A case of a 50-year-old, right-handed female, mono-lingual native Spanish-speaker with a university-level education and cognitive changes is reported. Over approximately 2 years, she presented with a progressive deterioration of writing abilities associated with acalculia and anomia. An MRI disclosed a left parietal temporal atrophy. Two years later, further significant cognitive decline consistent with a dementia of the Alzheimer's type was observed. Amnesia, executive dysfunction, and ideomotor apraxia were found. Writing was severely impaired, and some difficulties in reading were observed.

Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was used to investigate the neural processing characteristics associated with word retrieval abilities after a phonologically-based treatment for anomia in two stroke patients with aphasia. Neural activity associated with a phonological and a semantic task was compared before and after treatment with fMRI. In addition to the two patients who received treatment, two patients with aphasia who did not receive treatment and 10 healthy controls were also scanned twice. In the two patients who received treatment, both of whose naming improved after treatm

The occurrence of anomia specifically affecting the ability to name animals is described in three patients. This deficit is contrasted with their capacity to name actions and tools. It is suggested that it is easier to access the names of 'operative' items, which were learned through both visual and sensorimotor experience, than the names of 'figurative' items, which were primarily learned through the visual modality. This hypothesis is consistent with the infero-temporal location of brain damage in these patients. Their ability to retrieve knowledge about operative items is assumed to be due

This study explored access to grammatical gender during naming in Hebrew. Studies of anomia and tip-of-the-tongue states (TOT) found that speakers of various languages (Italian, Spanish, German, Dutch) have information about the grammatical gender of words they fail to retrieve. In Hebrew, on the other hand, a TOT study found that Hebrew speakers could not provide gender information. To test access to gender in single words in Hebrew we used an implicit measure--the analysis of paraphasias of anomic patients with respect to whether or not they preserved the grammatical gender of the target wor

The interrelation of perceptual and verbral process was explored in a fluent aphasic with a naming disorder. This patient performed extremely well on complex perceptual tasks as long as he was instructed to remain silent or to count aloud. Whe he began to talk about what he was doing, he misnamed many test items and behaved as if they were what he had called them. The verbal interference effect is explained in terms of cerebral dominance and interhemispheric interaction and it is suggested that a similar mechanism may apply in classical cases of agnosia.

Around 40% of patients who undergo a left temporal lobe epilepsy (LTLE) surgery suffer from anomia (word-finding difficulties), a condition that negatively impacts quality of life. Despite these observations, language rehabilitation is still understudied in LTLE. We assessed the effect of a four-week rehabilitation on four drug-resistant LTLE patients after their surgery. The anomia rehabilitation was based on cognitive descriptions of word finding deficits in LTLE. Its primary ingredients were psycholinguistic tasks and a psychoeducation approach to help patients cope with daily communication

We describe a patient with phonological alexia caused by a small hemorrhage in the posterior-inferior portion of the left temporal lobe. The lesion induced a highly selective impairment of phonological reading without concomitant oral language deficits other than anomia for objects presented in the visual and tactile modalities. We propose that an intact dorsal pathway from inferior visual association areas to Wernicke's area via the angular gyrus could mediate reading by the lexical route, while damage to a ventral pathway disrupted the patient's ability to read nonwords. We suggest further t

OBJECTIVE: An emerging approach in surgery is to propose prehabilitation programs to strengthen the patient's functional abilities before surgical interventions, thus helping them cope better with its consequences. In drug-resistant language-dominant temporal lobe epilepsy (LdTLE), surgical treatment carries a risk of increasing cognitive deficits, notably word-finding difficulties (anomia) and verbal memory difficulties that negatively impact personal, social, and occupational activities. In this study, we invited 15 LdTLE patients to enroll in a speech and language prehabilitation program ad
