Deep-sea hydrothermal vents are 'extreme' environments harboring diverse animal communities, powered by chemosynthesis. Though vent-endemic macrofauna have been a center of interest since their discovery in 1977, macroparasites have received little attention. Here, we report a bopyrid epicaridean isopod infesting the symbiotic munidopsid squat lobster Shinkaia crosnieri Baba and Williams, 1998 from three vent fields of Okinawa Trough, and describe it as Pleurocryptella shinkai sp. nov. Although morphologically close to the congeners Pleurocryptella formosa Bonnier, 1900, Pleurocryptella wolffi

A new porcellanid species of the genus Enosteoides Johnson, 1970 is described on the basis of a single specimen collected from the burrow of an unidentified snapping shrimp of the genus Alpheus Fabricius, 1798, on the subtidal coarse sediment in Okinawa Island, Ryukyu Islands, southwestern Japan. Enosteoides lapis n. sp. is similar to E. melissa (Miyake, 1942) and E. philippinensis Dolorosa Werding, 2014 in the general morphology of the frontal region of the carapace, third thoracic sternite, and ambulatory legs, but is distinguished from both by the dorsal surface of the carapace being more s

A new pagurid hermit crab species is assigned to the genus Kumepagurus Komai Osawa, 2012, previously represented only by the type species, K. cavernicolus Komai Osawa, 2012, known only from a marine cave on Ryukyu Islands, northwestern Pacific. The assignment is made because of the lack of an accessory tooth on the maxilliped 3 ischium, the operculiform right chela, the presence of two distal corneous claws on the left chela fixed finger, the simple pereopods 4 and the development and structure of the male sexual tubes on both coxae of pereopods 5, all characteristic to the type species of the

Two species of squat lobsters from the families Munididae and Chirostylidae were collected by ROV and manned submersible, respectively, at mesophotic depths of the Red Sea off the coast of Saudi Arabia. Sadayoshia benzoniae sp. nov. is described based on two specimens found among coral rubble and octocorals collected at depths of 104248.5 m, whereas Uroptychus deliquus Baba, Corbari & Macpherson, 2024 is reported from the Red Sea for the first time, based on a single specimen found in association with a fan coral, Melithaea sp. (Alcyonacea, Melithaeidae), at a depth of 220 m. Both genera are r

Profilicollis rancoensis n. sp. is the tenth species of Profilicollis Meyer, 1931 which includes 9 other species mostly known from marine decapod crabs and shore birds. Cystacanths of P. rancoensis are described from the dominant freshwater crab Aegla abtao in Ranco Lake, Chile and are morphologically distinguished from cystacanths of the 9 other species based on a combination of 4 characters. These are body size, number of proboscis hook rows, number of hooks per row, and length of the largest anterior 2-4 hooks. Male and female cystacanths of P. rancoensis are 2.10-3.33 mm long having an ovo

Lithodid crabs constitute a valuable natural resource with commercial interest; however, their health status in South America is scarcely studied. The presence of pathogens may have a negative impact on affected populations, endangering the fishery. This study surveys the symbionts present in populations of the king crab, Lithodes santolla, and the stone/false king crab, Paralomis granulosa, using histology, transmission electronic microscopy, and molecular analyses to characterise various symbionts. The histological and molecular data revealed a wide range of infections in L. santolla, includ

Hermit crabs have an intimate relationship with gastropod shells and show numerous activities by which they locate, select, and change shells in different contexts. They gather information about new shells and update information about their existing shells. This involves integration of different sensory modalities, memory-formation, and comparison of the overall value of each shell. Crabs also fight to get shells from other crabs, and again they gather information about the shell qualities and the opponent. Attacking crabs monitor their fight performance, and defenders are influenced by attack

Neoplasia is rarely reported in decapod crustaceans, and sarcoma has not been previously reported in any crab species. A California king crab Paralithodes californiensis with a recent history of autotomy (4 legs lost) and anorexia was found dead. Grossly, the crab had a pigmented ulcer on the right cheliped merus. Necropsy tissue samples were placed in 10% neutral buffered formalin and processed routinely for histology. Both histochemical (i.e. Brown and Brenn Gram, Fite-Faraco acid fast, Fontana-Masson, Giemsa, hematoxylin and eosin, Masson's trichrome, periodic acid-Schiff [PAS], phosphotung

Microplastics (plastics < 5 mm) are a potential threat to marine biodiversity. However, the effects of microplastic pollution on animal behaviour and cognition are poorly understood. We used shell selection in common European hermit crabs (Pagurus bernhardus) as a model to test whether microplastic exposure impacts the essential survival behaviours of contacting, investigating and entering an optimal shell. We kept 64 female hermit crabs in tanks containing either polyethylene spheres (n = 35) or no plastic (n = 29) for 5 days. We then transferred subjects into suboptimal shells and placed the

During field investigations of deep-reefs off the coast of Curaçao in the Lesser Antilles, Caribbean Sea, a female specimen was collected of an undescribed micro-pagurid crab with striking dorso-ventral flattening of the right cheliped. It was further characterized by a reduced branchial formula, fourth pereopods with grasping-like spines instead of typically pagurid rasp-like scales, nearly symmetrical uropods and telson, and a minute pair of first pleopods (gonopods). The single specimen was discovered in samples from the rariphotic zone (~130-309 m) obtained using a suction sampler operated

Gastropods commonly cope with the biotic and abiotic pressures of the intertidal through morphological adaptations of their shells. Snails from wave-exposed areas commonly have more streamlined shells that reduce drag forces with larger openings that favor their attachment to the substrate. In contrast, snails from sites with high predation commonly have a more globose shape that hinders breakage by predators. Hermit crabs use the shells of dead snails to protect their soft abdomen and confront similar biotic and abiotic pressures. Our main goal was to determine whether hermit crabs exploit in

Odour capture is an important part of olfaction, where dissolved chemical cues (odours) are brought into contact with chemosensory structures. Antennule flicking by marine crabs is an example of discrete odour capture (sniffing) where an array of chemosensory hairs is waved through the water to create a flow-no flow pattern based on a narrow range of speeds, diameters of and spacings between hairs. Changing the speed of movement and spacing of hairs at this scale to manipulate flow represents a complicated fluid dynamics problem. In this study, we use numerical simulation of the advection and

The red king crab Paralithodes camtschaticus was introduced to the Barents Sea from the North Pacific in the 1960s. A previous study concluded that it may be indirectly responsible for increased transmission of Trypanosoma murmanense to cod Gadus morhua in the southern Barents Sea by promoting an increase in the population of the leech vector Johanssonia arctica. Eleven species of fish, totalling 681 individuals, caught in October 2002 along the coast of Finnmark, were examined for trypanosome infections. The aims were to investigate changes in levels of infection in cod since 1999-2001, and t

A new Neotropical temnocephalan species is described from Aegla jarai Bond-Buckup & Buckup, 1994 from Santa Catarina, Brazil and recorded on Samastacus spinifrons (Philippi, 1882) from five locations (Región de Biobío, Región de la Araucanía, and Región de Los Lagos) in Chile. Temnocephala catarinensis sp. nov. differs from 10 other species of Temnocephala Blanchard, 1849 epibionts on Aeglidae Dana, 1852 and/or Parastacidae Huxley, 1879 by having the following combination of characters: 1. a long and slightly curved cirrus; 2. an introvert with two distinct portions, a proximal one with groove

Squat lobsters (Decapoda: Anomura) harbor a high diversity of symbionts, including many parasitic isopod species (Epicaridea: Bopyridae) that reside in their branchial chambers. We describe the bopyrid Parapleurocryptella poha n. sp., found infesting at least four species of squat lobsters from New Zealand. The new species displays morphological traits characteristic of the genus Parapleurocryptella Bourdon, 1972 but it is distinct from the two other described species, P. minuta Bourdon, 1972 and P. elasmonoti Bourdon, 1972, based on the form of the female head as well as male antennal segment

Marine invertebrates living in oxygen minimum zones (OMZ), where low pO2 and high pCO2 conditions co-occur, display physiological mechanisms allowing them to deal with these coupled stressors. We measured aerobic metabolic rate (MRa) and the critical oxygen tension (Pcrit), and calculated the oxygen supply capacity (α) of both the red (Grimothea monodon) and yellow (Grimothea johni) squat lobsters, under two pCO2 scenarios (~414 and 1400 μatm). We also measured haemolymph pH, haemocyanin oxygen binding affinity (p50), and haemolymph lactate content in both species under normoxia, low pCO2 hypo

Entoniscid isopods (Entoniscidae) are obligate endoparasites of other crustacean species. They have an indirect lifestyle, usually with two hosts and multiple larval stages; as adults they are found living within decapod hosts. Hermit crabs were previously known to be definitive hosts of only two species of entoniscid parasites: Paguritherium alatum, from the east coast of the United States in Pagurus spp. and Diogenion vermifactus from the Red Sea in Diogenes senex. Little beyond the original descriptions of these species has been reported in the literature. Recently, two species of entonisci

Microplastics (<5 mm) are a threat to marine biodiversity however their effects on animal cognition and behaviour are unclear. We investigated whether microplastic exposure affects shell selection behaviour and motivation in the common European hermit crab, Pagurus bernhardus. Subjects were maintained for 5 days in tanks containing either: polyethylene microplastic spheres (n = 40), or no plastic (n = 40). They were then placed in low-quality shells and presented with an alternative high-quality shell. When they first touched the high-quality shell, the hermit crabs were startled using visual

Branchial bopyrids infesting porcellanid crabs from the Philippines were investigated based on intertidal collections made in 1999-2000. Crabs of the genus Petrolisthes collected from sites in the northern Philippines were examined and two parasite species were found. One new pseudionine species found infesting Petrolisthes sp. [cf. Petrolisthes asiaticus (Leach)] is described as Aporobopyrus galleonus (prevalence 6.1%); this species is distinguished from other members of the genus by a setose palp on the maxilliped of the females, barbula morphology, and male characters including the possessi
