Bacterial and parasitic diseases of Anseriformes.

Several bacterial diseases are known to be major mortality factors of waterfowl (ducks, geese, and swans of the family Anatidae). Parasitic diseases of waterfowl are quite common but generally are not major mortality factors. However, parasites, if present during other disease outbreaks, can contribute to mortality. From a disease standpoint, the tendency of waterfowl to aggregate in large numbers during postbreeding molt, fall migration, and winter and spring migration can lead to the ready transfer of disease-causing organisms and can lead to high mortality from certain bacterial diseases.

Fungal diseases of columbiformes and anseriformes.

Because of the high incidence of aspergillosis, fungal disease is an important condition in the waterfowl. Although this is generally a disease of individual birds, epizootics have been reported when overwhelming spore loads are present. By contrast, the occurrence of fungal disease is quite sporadic in the pigeon. In both groups of birds, however, the zoonotic potential of fungal diseases such as cryptococcosis, histoplasmosis, and blastomycosis is clinically significant. The abundant creatinine levels in droppings serve as a nitrogen source for these organisms. This allows their numbers to i

Anseriform brain and its parts versus taxonomic and ecological categories.

The size of the brain and its macro-anatomical parts in 206 birds representing 19 anseriform species and 4 tribes (Anserini, Anatini, Aythyini and Mergini) was the subject of a comparative analysis. The comparisons involved two aspects: taxonomic (differences among species within tribes and differences among tribes) and ecological (diet composition: vegetation, invertebrates, or fish and the foraging mode: browsing, dabbling, shallow diving, and deep diving). The relative size of the encephalon (E) and its parts (optic tectum, OT; cerebellum, C; brain stem, BS; hemispheres, H) were described u

Comparative Genomics Reveals Genetic Adaptations to Diving-Associated Foraging in Anseriformes.

Diving behavior in waterfowl represents a remarkable physiological adaptation requiring extensive genetic modifications to cope with hypoxic and high-pressure underwater environments. We analyzed 25 Anseriformes genomes, representing diverse foraging strategies, and identified 13,873 orthogroups with 7991 single-copy orthogroups across all species. Comparative genomic analysis revealed significant positive selection signatures in diving waterfowl, with GO and KEGG enrichment analyses highlighting key functional adaptations in metabolic regulation, transmembrane and immune responses. The parasitic fauna of the Chiloe wigeon Mareca sibilatrix (Anseriformes: Anatidae) from Ñuble region, Chile.

The Chiloe wigeon, Mareca sibilatrix (Anseriformes: Anatidae), is a native duck distributed mainly in Chile and Argentina. Although it is a common species in the Neotropical realm, studies on its parasitic fauna remain limited. This study aimed to gather additional data on host-parasite associations in M. sibilatrix. Thus, 18 birds from Ñuble region, central Chile, were subjected to parasitic examination. Ectoparasites and endoparasites obtained were stored in 70 % and 80 % ethanol, respectively. A total of 787 parasite individuals were isolated; all birds were parasitized by at least one para

Dietary specialization drives adaptation, convergence, and integration across the cranial and appendicular skeleton in Waterfowl (Anseriformes).

Convergence provides strong evidence for adaptation, reflecting similar responses to recurring selection pressures. Waterfowl (order Anseriformes) have repeatedly evolved morphotypes putatively correlated with foraging ecology (e.g., dabbler, grazer, diver), making them an ideal model for testing hypotheses of adaptive evolution. Here, we estimated the most robust time-calibrated phylogenetic tree for the waterfowl to date and quantified the shape of the skull, femur, tibiotarsus, and tarsometatarsus of 118 extant waterfowl species using geometric morphometrics. Multivariate generalized evolut

First detection of a Haemoproteus macrovacuolatus-like parasite in two captive birds of the order Anseriformes: Evidence of atypical morphology.

Haemosporidians are vector-borne parasites that infect vertebrates and are commonly detected in captive birds, causing infections ranging from mild to severe and may be fatal, especially those involving Plasmodium and Haemoproteus species. Blood samples from 17 Anseriformes, including 15 captive Ruddy Shelduck (Tadorna ferruginea) and two black-necked swans (Cygnus melancoryphus), were analyzed in this study. An integrative approach identified Haemoproteus infection in one female of each species, with genetic sequences showing 100% similarity to Haemoproteus macrovacuolatus, based on a 478 bp

DESCRIPTION AND PHYLOGENETIC AFFINITIES OF A NEW SPECIES OF NEOPSILOTREMA (DIGENEA: PSILOSTOMIDAE) FROM LESSER SCAUP, AYTHYA AFFINIS (ANSERIFORMES: ANATIDAE).

Neopsilotrema is a small genus of psilostomid digeneans parasitic in the intestine of birds in the Palearctic and Nearctic. At present, the genus includes 4 species: Neopsilotrema lisitsynae from the Palearctic and Neopsilotrema affine, Neopsilotrema lakotae, and Neopsilotrema marilae from the Nearctic. Herein, we describe a new species, Neopsilotrema itascae n. sp., from lesser scaup Aythya affinis collected in Minnesota. The species can be distinguished from congeners on the basis of the ventral sucker:oral sucker width ratio, body width:length ratio, and cirrus sac size, along with other ch

A new Paleogene fossil and a new dataset for waterfowl (Aves: Anseriformes) clarify phylogeny, ecological evolution, and avian evolution at the K-Pg Boundary.

Despite making up one of the most ecologically diverse groups of living birds, comprising soaring, diving and giant flightless taxa, the evolutionary relationships and ecological evolution of Anseriformes (waterfowl) remain unresolved. Although Anseriformes have a comparatively rich, global Cretaceous and Paleogene fossil record, morphological datasets for this group that include extinct taxa report conflicting relationships for all known extinct taxa. Correct placement of extinct taxa is necessary to understand whether ancestral anseriform feeding ecology was more terrestrial or one of a set

Candidiasis in Birds (Galliformes, Anseriformes, Psittaciformes, Passeriformes, and Columbiformes): A Focus on Antifungal Susceptibility Pattern of Candida albicans and Non-albicans Isolates in Avian Clinical Specimens.

Candidiasis is a fungal infection caused by Candida species which has been reported in most domestic and wild birds and mammals. In this study, 196 samples from different species of birds with suspected symptoms of candidiasis were examined. Pharyngeal swabs, cloacal swabs, and fecal samples were taken from the birds. The samples were cultured in sabouraud dextrose agar (SDA) containing cycloheximide and chloramphenicol and incubated at 42°C. Suspected isolates of Candida were identified using PCR. To detect the candida genus, a primer set to target the candida rDNA (ITS1-ITS4) was selected. T

Possible basis for the emergence of H1N1 viruses with pandemic potential from avian hosts.

Influenza A viruses of the H1N1 subtype have emerged from the avian influenza gene pool in aquatic birds and caused human pandemics at least twice during the past century. Despite this fact, surprisingly little is known about the H1N1 gene pool in the aquatic bird reservoir. A preliminary study showed that an H1N1 virus from a shorebird of the Charadriiformes order was transmitted between animals through the airborne route of infection, whereas an H1N1 virus from a bird of the Anseriformes order was not. Here we show that two of the three H1N1 viruses isolated from Charadriiformes species in 2

Cretaceous Antarctic bird skull elucidates early avian ecological diversity.

Fossils representing Cretaceous lineages of crown clade birds (Aves) are exceptionally rare but are crucial to elucidating major ecological shifts across early avian divergences. Among the earliest known putative crown birds is Vegavis iaai1-5, a foot-propelled diver from the latest Cretaceous (69.2-68.4 million years ago)6 of Antarctica with controversial phylogenetic affinities2,7-10. Initially recovered by phylogenetic analyses as a stem anatid (ducks and closely related species)1,2,11, Vegavis has since been recovered as a stem member of Anseriformes (waterfowl)7-9, or outside Aves altoget

Hepatitis and splenitis due to systemic tetratrichomoniasis in an American white pelican (Pelecanus erythrorhynchos).

A free-ranging, young adult, female American white pelican (Pelecanus erythrorhynchos), found dead on the grounds of the San Diego Zoo Safari Park in Southern California, had severe multifocal to coalescing necrotizing hepatitis and splenitis on postmortem examination. Histologically, within the large areas of necrosis were myriad pleomorphic, 5-20 µm in diameter, protozoal organisms with 1 to multiple nuclei. Ultrastructurally, the organisms were consistent with a trichomonad flagellate. Polymerase chain reaction and sequencing of the small subunit ribosomal RNA gene identified nucleotide seq

Variation in arbovirus infection rates in species of birds sampled in a serological survey during an encephalitis epidemic in the Murray Valley of South-eastern Australia, February 1974.

There was extensive and exuberant breeding of waterbirds before and during an epidemic of arboviral encephalitis in the Murray Valley of south eastern Australia in 1974. As estimated by haemagglutination inhibition tests on 432 bird sera collected between 4th and 13th February, 1974, infection with Murray Valley encephalitis virus, Kunjin virus and possibly other flaviviruses was concentrated in species of the Order Ciconiiformes (55% positive) and Pelecaniformes (41%), compared with only 5% in Anseriformes. Although Sindbis virus infections were also highest in these 2 Orders (56% and 46%, re

Disentangling the drivers and host-mediated global spread of H7 influenza A virus.

Avian influenza H7 viruses pose a significant zoonotic and pandemic threat, yet their evolutionary dynamics, spatial transmission patterns, and host-specific roles remain underexplored. This study integrates phylodynamic and phylogeographic analyses to map global H7 dissemination, quantify host-specific contributions, and identify key ecological and anthropogenic drivers. Epidemiological data show key epidemic waves in Asia during 2013-2014 and 2016-2017, and in Africa in 2023. The Eurasian and American lineages of H7 viruses exhibit transmission with a median velocity of ~661 km/year and ~354
