Macrogenomic Analysis Reveals Soil Microbial Diversity in Different Regions of the Antarctic Peninsula.

(1) Background: The unique geographical and climatic conditions of the Antarctic Peninsula contribute to distinct regional ecosystems. Microorganisms are crucial for sustaining the local ecological equilibrium. However, the variability in soil microbial community diversity across different regions of the Antarctic Peninsula remains underexplored. (2) Methods: We utilized metagenome sequencing to investigate the composition and functionality of soil microbial communities in four locations: Devil Island, King George Island, Marambio Station, and Seymour Island. (3) Results: In the KGI region, we

Regional consistency in microbial community responses to hydrocarbon pollution in maritime Antarctic soils.

Antarctica, though remote and sparsely inhabited, faces significant ecological risks due to human activities and settlements that generate, among others, fuel leaks. In particular, maritime ice-free soils are becoming increasingly vulnerable to environmental disturbances, particularly hydrocarbon (HC) contamination, which represents a significant ecological threat. Low temperatures and limited nutrients reduce microbial degradation rates, allowing contamination to persist for decades. Despite their ecological importance, the structure and environmental drivers of Antarctic soil microbial commu

Critical raw material concentrations in the Antarctic Peninsula and recalibration of the potential ecological risk index for polar regions.

Critical raw materials (CRMs) are emerging inorganic pollutants because of their technological use and release into remote marine environments. However, their occurrence, distribution, and ecological significance in Antarctic waters remain poorly understood, and existing risk indices have not been adapted for CRMs in these systems. This study investigated selected CRMs in surface waters collected from 21 stations across the Antarctic Peninsula and Horseshoe Island during three consecutive Turkish Antarctic Expeditions (2023-2025). Trace and ultra-trace concentrations were measured by inductive

Characterization of atmospheric aerosols in the Antarctic region using Raman Spectroscopy and Scanning Electron Microscopy.

The non-destructive spectroscopic characterization of airborne particulate matter (PM) was performed to gain better knowledge of the internal structures of atmospheric aerosols at the particle level in the Antarctic region, along with their potential sources. PM and soil samples were collected during the 2016-2017 austral summer season at the surroundings of the Spanish Antarctic Research Station "Gabriel de Castilla" (Deception Island, South Shetland Islands). PM was deposited in a low-volume sampler air filter. Raman spectroscopy (RS) and Scanning Electron Microscopy with Energy-Dispersive X

Comparative swarming dynamics of Antarctic krill and ice krill in the Ross Sea Region Marine Protected Area.

Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) and ice krill (Euphausia crystallorophias) are vital to the Southern Ocean ecosystem, yet their swarming behavior remains poorly understood. This study applied a novel approach in the Ross Sea by directly linking acoustically detected swarms with net-captured krill, enabling precise identification of species and body size-key traits often unavailable in previous studies. From 14 Antarctic krill and 55 ice krill swarms, key properties-depth, length, height, area, and packing concentration-were extracted. Hierarchical clustering grouped swarms into two Antarct

UV-B-induced DNA damage and repair pathways in polar Pseudogymnoascus sp. from the Arctic and Antarctic regions and their effects on growth, pigmentation and conidiogenesis.

Solar radiation regulates most biological activities on Earth. Prolonged exposure to solar UV radiation can cause deleterious effects by inducing two major types of DNA damage, namely, cyclobutane pyrimidine dimers (CPDs) and pyrimidine 6-4 pyrimidone photoproducts. These lesions may be repaired by the photoreactivation (Phr) and nucleotide excision repair (NER) pathways; however, the principal UV-induced DNA repair pathway is not known in the fungal genus Pseudogymnoascus. In this study, we demonstrated that an unweighted UV-B dosage of 1.6 kJ m-2 d-1 significantly reduced fungal growth rates

Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza H5N1 in South America, 2022-2025: Spread, Affected Species, and Southward Expansion into the Antarctic Region.

The H5N1 highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) virus has caused severe global losses, reaching South America in 2022 and Antarctica in 2024. Here, we synthesize outbreak reports submitted to the World Organization for Animal Health by South American countries and overseas territories in this continent, and document the virus's unprecedented expansion into Antarctica, affecting wild birds, wild mammals, and domestic poultry. Phylogenetic and time-calibrated Bayesian analyses were performed on available genomic sequences. Over 6 million domestic birds were lost, mostly from commercial operati

Metabolomics approach for predicting stomach and colon contents in dead Arctocephalus pusillus pusillus, Arctocephalus tropicalis, Lobodon carcinophaga and Ommatophoca rossii from sub-Antarctic region.

The dietary habits of seals play a pivotal role in shaping management and administration policies, especially in regions with potential interactions with fisheries. Previous studies have utilized various methods, including traditional approaches, to predict seal diets by retrieving indigestible prey parts, such as calcified structures, from intestines, feces, and stomach contents. Additionally, methods evaluating nitrogen and stable isotopes of carbon have been employed. The metabolomics approach, capable of quantifying small-scale molecules in biofluids, holds promise for specifying dietary e

Air radioactivity in Marambio Base: The peculiar character of Antarctic Peninsula.

The Antarctic region is considered to be the least contaminated in the world due to its specific location and separation of this area as well as low activity of humans (Hashimoto et al., 1988). Additionally, in accordance with the provision of the Antarctic Treaty System (Antarctic Treaty Secretariat, 2020) it is prohibited to conduct any actions with nuclear materials in this area. Nevertheless, Antarctica is not free from radioactive pollutants (human activity, nuclear tests or accidents) created in other parts of the world and transported by air masses or sea currents to the region of the S

Larval morphology of Belgica antarctica Jacobs, 1900 (Diptera, Chironomidae, Orthocladiinae) from central part of the maritime Antarctic and deformities found in the larvae.

The larval morphology of the endemic species Belgica antarctica Jacobs, collected in January and February (2022) from six sites of Antarctica, was studied. The mouth apparatus and the parapods of one hundred seventy-six larvae were analyzed. No differences were found in the morphology of these structures between individuals of different sites. However, differences (with the exception of the length of 2nd antennal segment) were estimated in the sizes of the morphological features, as 2023 measurements were made of fifteen kinds of these structures and larval body. Deformities of mentum, mandibl

The signs and symptoms of Ernest Shackleton.

Ernest Shackleton, an accomplished Antarctic explorer, developed a life-threatening illness during the Discovery Antarctic expedition of 1901-4. His documented signs and symptoms included inflamed gums attributed to scurvy, severe dyspnea, and exercise intolerance, presenting in a setting of nutritional deficiency. Physical examinations at a later date, also following a prolonged diet of limited fresh food, revealed a pulmonary systolic murmur. Thiamine deficiency with cardiomyopathy, either alone or subsequently exacerbated by advanced scurvy, may have been a prominent cause of Shackleton's c

Sub-Antarctic subtidal and intertidal macroalgae in rocky ecosystems of Inútil Bay, Tierra del Fuego in Southern Patagonia.

BACKGROUND: The sub-Antarctic region is notable for its high macroalgal diversity. Although a number of studies have documented the species richness of macroalgae along the Chilean sub-Antarctic coast, many regions remain underexplored, with little to no available species inventories or ecological assessments. NEW INFORMATION: This study aims to expand current knowledge of macroalgal species richness in the intertidal and subtidal rocky environments in Inútil Bay, a sub-Antarctic area of Tierra del Fuego (Chile). A total of 72 macroalgal taxa were identified: 32 in intertidal and 58 in subtid

Environmental conditions modulate hermaphroditic pathways in Salpa thompsoni near the Western Antarctic Peninsula.

Field observations during summer-fall of 2018 in the Antarctic Peninsula region provided the first morphological evidence that under certain environmental conditions, Salpa thompsoni blastozooid development can deviate from its traditional sequential protogynous hermaphroditism (SPH). Early male testis development at female blastozooid stages points to a wide-spread overlapping protogynous hermaphroditism (OPH) in regions where warm Antarctic Circumpolar Current waters mix with colder Antarctic Coastal waters. Our findings highlight the importance of the environmental setting in determining th

Multiple Doris "kerguelenensis" (Nudibranchia) species span the Antarctic Polar Front.

Despite strong historical biogeographical links between benthic faunal assemblages of the Magellan region of South America and the Antarctic Peninsula, very few studies have documented contemporary movement and gene flow in or out of the Southern Ocean, especially across the Antarctic Polar Front (APF). In fact, oceanographic barriers such as the APF and Antarctica's long geologic isolation have substantially separated the continents and facilitated the evolution of endemic marine taxa found within the Antarctic region. The Southern Ocean benthic sea slug complex, Doris "kerguelenensis," are a

Tracing the origins of Antarctic periwinkles: an integrative morphological-molecular perspective on Laevilacunaria evolution.

In biogeography, related lineages often share similar range sizes and species richness due to inherited traits and shared geographic history. This expectation is based on phylogenetic niche conservatism and shared dispersal constraints. However, within the subfamily Laevilitorininae, this pattern is not observed: Laevilitorina shows broader distributions and higher species richness than Laevilacunaria despite similar developmental mode and habitat preferences. Combining multilocus genetic data, radular morphology and model-based historical biogeography, we aim to understand the origins of thes

Atmospheric Microbial Transport to Antarctica and Its Ecological Implications: A Systematic Review.

Atmospheric transport is hypothesized to be the primary vector connecting isolated Antarctic terrestrial habitats to global microbial pools, yet the mechanisms governing this connectivity still have important gaps. We systematically reviewed the present knowledge on how the atmosphere acts not merely as a passive conduit, but potentially as a selective ecological filter and a particular ecosystem. Analysis of 53 studies reveals a three-pathway framework: (1) long-range advection via the free troposphere, (2) marine aerosolization from the Southern Ocean, and (3) local resuspension of soils, ro

Trajectory of increased iceberg kill-off in West Antarctica's shallows.

Compared with low latitude coasts, many polar latitudes are still little impacted by intense and direct anthropogenic stressors. Climate forcing is now bringing rapid physical change to nearshore polar realms. In the shallow coastal waters adjacent to the United Kingdom's Rothera Research Station in the West Antarctic Peninsula (WAP), 225 seabed markers at 5-25 m depth have been surveyed and replaced every year from 2002-2023 (75 markers at each of 5, 10 and 25 m). This is one of the longest continuously running marine disturbance experiments in the world, in one of Earth's fastest changing en

The Cretaceous Neornithine record and new Vegaviidae specimens from the López de Bertodano Formation (Upper Maastrichthian) of Vega Island, Antarctic Peninsula.

A worldwide revision of the Cretaceous record of Neornithes (crown birds) revealed that unambiguous neornithine taxa are extremely scarce, with only a few showing diagnostic features to be confidently assigned to that group. Here we report two new neornithine specimens from Vega Island (López de Bertodano Formation). The first is a synsacrum (MN 7832-V) that shows a complex pattern of transversal diverticula intercepting the canalis synsacri, as in extant neornithines. Micro-CT scanning revealed a camerate pattern of trabeculae typical of neornithines. It further shows the oldest occurrence of

Mercury levels in humpback whales, and other Southern Ocean marine megafauna.

Mercury is a known potent neurotoxin. The biogeochemical cycle of mercury in the remote Antarctic region is still poorly understood, with Polar climate change contributing added complexity. Longitudinal biomonitoring of mercury accumulation in Antarctic marine megafauna can contribute top-down insight into the bio-physical drivers of wildlife exposure. The bioaccumulative nature of organic mercury renders high trophic predators at the greatest risk of elevated exposure. Humpback whales represent secondary consumers of the Antarctic sea-ice ecosystem and an ideal biomonitoring species for persi
