Anterior commissure absence without callosal agenesis: a new brain malformation.

The authors report a novel human brain malformation characterized by the absence of the anterior commissure without callosal agenesis, but associated with gross unilateral panhemispheric malformation incorporating subependymal heterotopia, subcortical heterotopia, and gyral abnormalities including temporal malformation and polymicrogyria. In contrast, a normal anterior commissure was found in 125 control subjects and in 113 other subjects with a range of brain malformations.

Vulnerability of the anterior commissure in moderate to severe pediatric traumatic brain injury.

In relation to the adult brain, the immature brain might be more vulnerable to damage during and following traumatic brain injury, particularly in white-matter tracts. Given well-established evidence of corpus callosum atrophy, we hypothesized that anterior commissure volume (using quantitative magnetic resonance imaging [MRI]) in this structure would be decreased in children with moderate to severe traumatic brain injury relative to typically developing children. Second, given the purported role of the anterior commissure in interhemispheric axon conveyance between temporal lobes, we hypothes

A new reference line for the brain CT: the tuberculum sellae-occipital protuberance line is parallel to the anterior/posterior commissure line.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: CT and MR imaging of the brain have diverged reference lines. Modified Talairach anterior/posterior commissure (ACPC) line is widely accepted as the standard for clinical brain MR imaging, while orbitomeatal line (OML) is used for CT. This study sought to determine an appropriate reference line for brain CT parallel to the ACPC line. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We measured the angles between the ACPC line and the OML, the line connecting the tuberculum sellae and the internal occipital protuberance (TS-IOP line), and the line connecting the tuberculum sellae and the externa

Heredity and alcohol-induced brain anomalies: effects of alcohol on anomalous prenatal development of the corpus callosum and anterior commissure in BALB/c and C57BL/6 mice.

Using two inbred strains of mice which have similar rates of alcohol metabolism, we asked whether prenatal alcohol exposure would cause greater incidence and severity of defects in the development of two forebrain fiber tracts, the corpus callosum and the anterior commissure, in mice prone to these defects (BALB/c) than in mice not prone to these defects (C57BL/6). Pregnant animals were fed 0.6 kcal/g body weight of a Sustacal-based liquid diet containing 0, 15, 17.5, 20, or 25% ethanol-derived calories from day 7 to fetal assessment on day 18 of gestation. Most of alcohol's greatest effects a

Intricate mesoscale organization of the anterior commissure in the rhesus monkey, with implications for neuroimaging.

The anterior commissure (AC) is generally identified as one of the major interhemispheric pathways. Anatomical results, however, indicate that it has significant ipsilateral components. Further, as reported here, the ipsilaterally projecting axons are organized as a system of narrow, quasi-parallel stripes, especially prominent at the transverse decussation. These appear as a medio-lateral array in coronal tissue sections, but at higher magnification can be seen to consist of axonal segments aggregated in an obliquely anterior-posterior (AP) trajectory. This is counter-oriented to the interstr

Insights into the segmental identity of post-oral commissures and pharyngeal nerves in Onychophora based on retrograde fills.

BACKGROUND: While the tripartite brain of arthropods is believed to have evolved by a fusion of initially separate ganglia, the evolutionary origin of the bipartite brain of onychophorans-one of the closest arthropod relatives-remains obscure. Clarifying the segmental identity of post-oral commissures and pharyngeal nerves might provide useful insights into the evolution of the onychophoran brain. We therefore performed retrograde fills of these commissures and nerves in the onychophoran Euperipatoides rowelli. RESULTS: Our fills of the anterior and posterior pharyngeal nerves revealed groups

Microstructural analysis does not support altered interhemispheric wiring of the human anterior commissure in corpus callosum dysgenesis.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with corpus callosum dysgenesis (CCD) lack the clear disconnection syndrome that is characteristic of individuals in whom the corpus callosum has been surgically severed. One potential explanation for this paradox is that the anterior commissure undergoes neuroplastic remodeling in CCD to improve interhemispheric communication between the brain hemispheres. METHODS: A cohort of sixteen individuals with CCD (and sixteen sex and age-matched neurotypical controls) underwent multi-shell diffusion magnetic resonance high-field imaging (dMRI) at 7-Tesla to assess the anatomy

Moderate prenatal ethanol exposure interacts with strain in affecting brain development in BALB/c and C57BL/6 mice.

The development of two forebrain fiber tracts, the corpus callosum and anterior commissure was examined in BALB/cCF and C57BL/6J mice in relation to moderate maternal consumption of ethanol during gestation. Pregnant animals were fed ethanol 10% v/v in the drinking water from days 5 to 19 of gestation, when fetal brain development was assessed. Control animals received an isocaloric sucrose solution and were pair-fed to the experimental animals. An additional ad libitum control group was included. The alcohol treatment did not increase the incidence of the CC being absent in a midsagittal sect

Cochleovestibular Nerve Compression Syndrome Caused by Intrameatal Anterior Inferior Cerebellar Artery Loop: Synthesis of Best Evidence for Clinical Decisions.

INTRODUCTION: Intrameatal cochleovestibular neurovascular conflict is a rare condition with specific clinical and therapeutic implications. Although surgery is commonly indicated in other neurovascular conflicts, for this subset of patients there is little evidence to guide treatment decisions. Moving from a case description, we performed a review of the literature on this topic to systematically present the best available evidence to guide clinical decisions. METHODS: We performed a literature review on reported cases of surgically treated intrameatal anterior inferior cerebellar artery (AIC

Anterior and posterior commissures in agenesis of the corpus callosum: Alternative pathways for attention processes?

Developmental absence (agenesis) of the corpus callosum (AgCC) is a congenital brain malformation resulting from disruption of corpus callosum formation, a structure that is crucial for the transfer and integration of information, including attention processes, across the brain. This study aimed to investigate previously proposed candidates for alternative inter-hemispheric pathways in AgCC by examining (1) white matter volume and microstructure of the anterior and posterior commissures in children with AgCC compared to typically developing controls (TDC), and (2) in children with AgCC, examin

Neural connectivity of the anterior body of the fornix in the human brain: diffusion tensor imaging study.

A few studies have reported on the neural connectivity of the fornix in the human brain, however, little is known about the neural connectivity of the anterior body of the fornix. In this study, we used diffusion tensor imaging in investigation of the neural connectivity of the anterior body of the fornix in normal subjects. Forty healthy subjects were recruited for this study. A seed region of interest was placed on the anterior body of the fornix using the FMRIB Software Library. Connectivity was defined as the incidence of connection between the anterior body of the fornix and any neural st

Morphology of acallosal brains as assessed by MRI in six patients leading a normal daily life.

The pattern of anatomical features of the brain revealed by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is described in six patients incidentally identified as having acallosal brains. The complex of morphological features associated with complete agenesis of the corpus callosum included lateral displacement of slitlike anterior horns of the lateral ventricles (bullhorn-like shape), dilatation of the posterior horns of the lateral ventricles, absence of the septum pellucidum, lateral displacement of the cingulate gyri, complete separation of fornices and the presence of the anterior commissure and longit

[The anatomy and the MRI anatomy of the interhemispheric cerebral commissures].

Correlation of myelin-stained or cryotomic sections of human brain with inversion-recovery MR images can display the cerebral commissures as white-matter tracts (in hypersignal on MRI), crossing the mid-line. MRI shows routinely in three orthogonal planes a) the corpus callosum stretched above the supra-tentorial ventricles, it's four portions (rostrum, genu, body and splenium) and connections with the Deep Grey Nuclei b) the fornix, intralimbic commissure joining anteriorly the mammillary bodies (through it's columns) to the alveus posteriorly and inferiorly (via it's two crura), arcing aroun

The fibers which leave the Probst's longitudinal bundle seen in the brain of an acallosal mouse: a study with the horseradish peroxidase technique.

The congenital absence of the corpus callosum, a brain anomaly frequently noted in humans, has been recently found to occur in some mice of the ddN strain in our laboratory. In the brains of these mice, the Probst's longitudinal bundle is always present on both cerebral hemispheres and gives rise to some aberrant fibers toward the midline. In this research, the neuroanatomical features of these fibers were studied by iontophoretical injections of horseradish peroxidase (HRP) into the neocortex of acallosal mouse brains. The results revealed that the fibers which leave the Probst's longitudinal

Anterior (atypical) callosal absence due to cortical dysplasia and schizencephaly.

The corpus callosum develops from anterior to posterior, starting at the commissural plate of the lamina terminalis. We report a patient with cortical dysplasia and schizencephaly, which apparently interfered with the normal callosal development before 20 gestational weeks. The result was an atypical callosal dysgenesis in which the anterior parts (including anterior body, genu and rostrum) were absent while the remaining parts were developed. This finding suggests that the commissural plate may not be the only region where the corpus callosum starts to develop in some congenital brain malform

High-resolution magnetic resonance microscopy and diffusion tensor imaging to assess brain structural abnormalities in the murine mucopolysaccharidosis VII model.

High-resolution microscopic magnetic resonance imaging (μMRI) and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) were performed to characterize brain structural abnormalities in a mouse model of mucopolysaccharidosis type VII (MPS VII). Microscopic magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated a decrease in the volume of anterior commissure and corpus callosum and a slight increase in the volume of the hippocampus in MPS VII versus wild-type mice. Diffusion tensor imaging indices were analyzed in gray and white matter. In vivo and ex vivo DTI demonstrated significantly reduced fractional anisotropy in the anterior

Complex sensory cross integration deficits in a case of corpus callosum agenesis with bilateral language representation: positron-emission-tomography and neuropsychological findings.

A 45-year-old right-handed patient with total callosal agenesis and absence of the anterior commissure was examined neuropsychologically and with magnetic resonance and positron emission tomography (PET with 18FDG) of the brain. PET results showed, in the resting state, a bilateral metabolic reduction in the hippocampal formation and a left hemispheric reduction in the amygdala, thalamus and in the occipital and temporoparietal junction areas of the cerebral cortex. Under speech activation hypermetabolic glucose activity was observed bilaterally in the region of the Wernicke area and within th
