The effects of anthropogenic sources of sound on fishes.

There is increasing concern about the effects of pile driving and other anthropogenic (human-generated) sound on fishes. Although there is a growing body of reports examining this issue, little of the work is found in the peer-reviewed literature. This review critically examines both the peer-reviewed and 'grey' literature, with the goal of determining what is known and not known about effects on fish. A companion piece provides an analysis of the available data and applies it to estimate noise exposure criteria for pile driving and other impulsive sounds. The critical literature review conclu

Anthropogenic effects on changing Q fever epidemiology in Russia.

In the northwestern region of Russia (Leningrad province) cattle is proved to be the main source of C. burnetii infection in humans, both in menaced professionals and in formally nonmenaced groups. Liquidation of specialized cattle-breeding complexes (with their well-organized veterinary surveillance) and broadening of the circle of non-professionals that contact with agriculture or domestic animals infected with C. burnetii provide the prerequisites to Q fever spreading among various groups of population.

Effects of anthropogenic metallic contamination on cholinesterases of Gambusia holbrooki.

Metal contamination causes multiple biological dysfunctions, including impairment of key physiological functions by targeting enzymes. This feature is a matter of concern, since it may imply significant disturbances in energy allocation, behaviour, reproduction, and survival. Inhibition of the cholinesterase (ChE) activity of aquatic organisms by metals has been described, and systematically used in biomonitoring studies as effect criterion of environmental exposure to these compounds. The present paper addresses the feasibility of using ChE inhibition to quantify the adverse acute and chronic

Ecotoxicological effects of anthropogenic stressors in subterranean organisms: A review.

How anthropogenic stressors affect biodiversity is a central question in a changing world. Subterranean ecosystems and their biodiversity are particularly vulnerable to change, yet, these species are frequently neglected in analyses of global biodiversity and assessments of ecological status and risk. Are these hidden species affected by anthropogenic stressors? Do they survive outside of the current thermal limits of their ecosystems? These and other important questions can be addressed with ecotoxicological testing, relating contaminants and temperature resistance of species with measured en

Natural and anthropogenic effects on microplastic distribution in a hypersaline lagoon.

Information on the transport and distribution of microplastics in coastal lagoons is scarce. This study provides the first evaluation of microplastic distribution in a hypersaline coastal lagoon and explores natural and anthropogenic factors that drive their location and transport. The study combines different field strategies: spatial distribution of microplastics in sediments, for September 2017 (wet season and peak use of the lagoon) and February 2018 (winter season, characterized by intense Northerly winds and least use of the lagoon); spatial distribution of microplastics in the water col

Tree-ring nitrogen isotopes reflect anthropogenic NOx emissions and climatic effects.

Anthropogenic emissions of atmospheric nitrogen have increased over the last century, but the monitoring of nitrous oxide concentrations is only recent. Can trees from temperate regions be used to infer past changes in nitrogen cycles? To considerthis question, we investigate nitrogen isotope (delta15N) ring series from pine and beech trees near Montréal, and beech specimens of Georgian Bay Islands. The delta15N values show coherent intertree and interspecies trends, independent of the sapwood-heartwood transition zones, implying that these results reflect local environmental conditions. At bo

Impact of Anthropogenic Emission Estimates on Air Quality and Human Health Effects.

Global bottom-up anthropogenic emission inventories show substantial spatial and temporal differences of short-lived pollutant emissions, which results in uncertainties in terms of air quality and human health impacts. In this study, we compare the emissions of trace gases and aerosols for the year 2015 from three different global emission inventories, the Community Emissions Data System (CEDS), the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service Global Anthropogenic Emissions (CAMS-GLOB-ANT), and Evaluating the Climate and Air Quality Impacts of Short-Lived Pollutants version 6b (ECLIPSEv6b). Legacy effects of anthropogenic disturbances modulate dynamics in the world's coral reefs.

Rapidly changing conditions alter disturbance patterns, highlighting the need to better understand how the transition from pulse disturbances to more persistent stress will impact ecosystem dynamics. We conducted a global analysis of the impacts of 11 types of disturbances on reef integrity using the rate of change of coral cover as a measure of damage. Then, we evaluated how the magnitude of the damage due to thermal stress, cyclones, and diseases varied among tropical Atlantic and Indo-Pacific reefs and whether the cumulative impact of thermal stress and cyclones was able to modulate the res

Beyond a Simple Effect: Variable and Changing Responses to Anthropogenic Noise.

A growing number of experimental studies have demonstrated that exposure to anthropogenic noise can affect the behavior and physiology of a variety of aquatic organisms. However, work in other fields suggests that responses are likely to differ between species, individuals, and situations and across time. We suggest that issues such as interspecific and intrapopulation variation, context dependency, repeated exposure and prior experience, and recovery and compensation need to be considered if we are to gain a full understanding of the impacts of this global pollutant.

[The effect of anthropogenic transformation on the conditions for the circulation of the causative agent of opisthorchiasis].

The conditions of O. felineus circulations in the area of minor hydraulic constructions of Graĭvoron on the Vorskla River where a tense Ukrainian focus of opisthorchiasis existed (the village of Dobryanskoye, Sumy Province) were followed up for a 8-year period (since 1982). Hydraulic construction near the Vorskla River resulted in a significant violation of the ecological balance (macrocyte occupation of the river bed and the bay terrace, bog-making, dystrophic changes of the low-land bodies of water). The aforementioned circumstances influenced the conditions of O. felineus circulation (decre

Anthropogenic contaminants of high concern: Existence in water resources and their adverse effects.

Existence of anthropogenic contaminants (ACs) in different environmental matrices is a serious and unresolved concern. For instance, ACs from different sectors, such as industrial, agricultural, and pharmaceutical, are found in water bodies with considerable endocrine disruptors potency and can damage the biotic components of the environment. The continuous ACs exposure can cause cellular toxicity, apoptosis, genotoxicity, and alterations in sex ratios in human beings. Whereas, aquatic organisms show bioaccumulation, trophic chains, and biomagnification of ACs through different entry route. Th

Effects of Anthropogenic and Biogenic Volatile Organic Compounds on Los Angeles Air Quality.

Assessing the role of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in production of ozone and secondary organic aerosol (SOA) is especially important in light of ongoing policy goals. Here, we estimated the ozone formation potential (OFP) and SOA formation potential (SOAP) of anthropogenic and biogenic VOC emissions to evaluate (1) anthropogenic VOCs and associated sectors that dominate OFP and SOAP and (2) the potential impacts of enhanced biogenic VOCs from urban greening programs on air quality in Los Angeles county. In the present-day scenario, ethylene had the largest OFP followed by m & p-xylene, t

Insights into the effects of anthropogenic activities on oil reservoir microbiome and metabolic potential.

Microbial communities have long been observed in oil reservoirs, where the subsurface conditions are major drivers shaping their structure and functions. Furthermore, anthropogenic activities such as water flooding during oil production can affect microbial activities and community compositions in oil reservoirs through the injection of recycled produced water, often associated with biocides. However, it is still unclear to what extent the introduced chemicals and microbes influence the metabolic potential of the subsurface microbiome. Here we investigated an onshore oilfield in Germany (Field

Understanding the Early Biological Effects of Isoprene-Derived Particulate Matter Enhanced by Anthropogenic Pollutants.

INTRODUCTION: Airborne fine particulate matter (PM2.5; particulate matter ≤ 2.5 μm in aerodynamic diameter) plays a key role in air quality, climate, and public health. Globally, the largest mass fraction of PM2.5 is organic, dominated by secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formed from atmospheric oxidation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Isoprene from vegetation is the most abundant nonmethane VOC emitted into Earth's atmosphere. Isoprene has been recently recognized as one of the major sources of global SOA production that is enhanced by the presence of anthropogenic pollutants, such as ac

A Scoping Review: The Effect of Anthropogenic Noise on Animal Welfare in Zoological Settings.

With zoological institutions placing greater emphasis on improving animal welfare, there has been more research studying the impact of animal welfare, including correlation with increased visitors. Some studies focus on the total effect of visitor presence and behaviours impacted, whereas others highlight how noise from visitors and other events impacts animal behaviour and welfare. This scoping review was conducted to determine the impact of anthropogenic noise on animal welfare in zoological settings and identify knowledge gaps. Starting with an initial pool of 1608 articles, almost all publ

Unveiling the dipole synergic effect of biogenic and anthropogenic emissions on ozone concentrations.

Biogenic emissions are widely known as important precursors of ozone, yet there is potentially a strong interaction and synergy between biogenic and anthropogenic emissions, including volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and nitrogen oxides (NOx), in modulating ozone formation. To a large extent, the synergy affects the effectiveness of anthropogenic emission control, thereby reshaping the O3-NOx-VOC empirical kinetic modeling approach (EKMA) diagram. Focusing on the ozone pollution period of June 2017 in the North China Plain, we design almost 500 numerical experiments using regional air quality

Effects of natural and anthropogenic emissions on the composition and toxicity of aerosols in the marine atmosphere.

The impacts of natural dimethyl sulfide (DMS) and ship emissions on marine environments and particulate matter (PM) over the western and southern sea areas around South Korea were studied based on field campaigns from August-September 2017 and May-June 2018 using the Community Multi-scale Air Quality v5.3.2 modeling system. DMS oxidation enhanced the concentrations of both sulfur dioxide (SO2) and sulfate (SO42-) in PM2.5 by 6.2-6.4% and 2.9-3.6%, respectively, in the marine atmosphere during the study period, whereas it slightly decreased nitrate (NO3-) concentrations (by -1.3%), compared to

Physiological effects of anthropogenic sound on aquatic animals: where are we and what is next?

Many aquatic animals have a well-developed sense of hearing as sound is important for communication underwater. However, this trait leaves them susceptible to injury, and physiological and behavioral impacts from exposure to intense or persistent anthropogenic sounds. We provide an overview of the current state of knowledge on the physiological effects of five main sources of anthropogenic sound: marine traffic, seismic exploration, pile driving, other industrial activity and sonar. Our understanding of impacts varies greatly by sound type and taxon, although the studied species do not represe

Effects of Experimental Anthropogenic Noise Exposure on the Reproductive Success of Secondary Cavity Nesting Birds.

Artificial nest boxes are critical nesting sites for secondary cavity-nesting birds; however, they are often placed near roadways and in urban areas that experience noise pollution and other human-caused stressors. Recent correlative studies document both negative and positive influences of noise pollution on reproductive success. Additionally, observational studies have not determined which stage of the breeding process is most vulnerable to noise pollution-settlement, incubation, and/or provisioning. Here, we controlled for possible effects from non-random settlement and eliminated potential
