Example of digital exhibition in anthropology and medical education.

Technology brings new opportunities in terms of education and research, and global pandemics such as the recent COVID-19 pandemic require online education-style approaches. Visualisation is of great importance in digitised education. In this study, materials that are of interest to the disciplines of anthropology, dentistry and medicine were selected from the skeletal materials and presented in a virtual exhibition. The mandible samples were digitised by photogrammetric method, and the exhibition was made navigable by using the Unity game engine program. In the exhibition, information on denta

A preliminary study in medical anthropology in Brunei, Borneo.

Nine rural village communities in the jungle of Brunei, Borneo were studied to ascertain possible effects of rapid social change on the health of the inhabitants. The social mores and religious beliefs of the rural tribes--Iban, Dusun, and Punan--have undergone but little change over many hundreds of years. During the past three decades, however, enormous social pressures for change have envolved from extraordinary economic prosperity of the region, due to the exploitation of large discoveries of oil and gas. Much of the money has been invested in health care, with the result that malaria, typ

The field of medical anthropology in Social Science & Medicine.

Conceptually and methodologically, medical anthropology is well-positioned to support a "big-tent" research agenda on health and society. It fosters approaches to social and structural models of health and wellbeing in ways that are critically reflective, cross-cultural, people-centered, and transdisciplinary. In this review article, we showcase these four main characteristics of the field, as featured in Social Science & Medicine over the last fifty years, highlighting their relevance for an international and interdisciplinary readership. First, the practice of critical inquiry in ethnographi

A call for a critical medical anthropology of the COVID-19 pandemic.

This paper is a call for a renewed critical medical anthropology (CMA) of the COVID-19 pandemic, one that attends not only to the pandemic's acute phase but also to its enduring afterlife. We argue that COVID-19 persists as a structuring condition that continues to impact individual experiences as well as domestic and global politics and culture. We introduce the concept of 'narrative compression' to describe how public and institutional discourses have foreclosed space for the ongoing suffering of individuals with long COVID and others marginalized by pandemic legacies. By tracing how closure

A comparison of forensic anthropology casework across two urban Midwest Medical Examiner's offices, 2013-2022.

Forensic anthropology has garnered greater attention in the academic and medicolegal communities with more practitioners embedded in Medical Examiner's and Coroner's offices. Practitioners have varied roles and responsibilities, leaving few opportunities to compare the nature, breadth, and outcomes of their casework. Sharing data provides the foundations upon which resource distribution, planning, and needs assessment can be based, providing essential information for training the next generation of professionals. This study reports on casework conducted by three forensic anthropology practitio

Inappropriate behaviour in the medical workplace - insights into organisational leadership from anthropology, psychology and related sciences.

Medicine is based on a long apprenticeship and mentorship that entails respect for skilled and experienced leaders - a process that lends the profession prestige. However, as is often the case with such professional values, this respect for leaders can be abused, and medicine continues to struggle with high levels of bullying, harassment and discrimination by medical leaders that adversely impact on medical staff and the communities they serve. We explore why inappropriate behaviour in the medical workplace has not seemingly receded in this context. Insights from anthropological and social psy

The experience of the Forensic Anthropology Service of the Medical Examiner's Office in Porto Alegre, Brazil.

The Forensic Anthropology Service of the Medical Examiner's Office of Porto Alegre was created in September 1997 to examine human skeletons, establish identification and identify lesions that may explain death. From September 1997 to December 2006, 344 skeletons were examined (mean: 37 examinations/year), and 322 were human remains. Most skeletal remains belonged to men (61%) whose age was estimated at 21-50 years (61%). The most frequent bone lesions were caused by fractures (71%), firearm projectiles (11%) and the effects of weather (10%). Antemortem bone changes due to consolidated fracture

AIDS and the health crisis of the U.S. urban poor; the perspective of critical medical anthropology.

The social identity of HIV/AIDS in the U.S. has been shaped, for the most part, by two factors, the prevailing configuration of social relations across class, racial, gender, and sexual orientation, on the one hand, and the prevailing array of public health, especially epidemiological, categories of disease transmission, on the other. Focusing on the AIDS epidemic among inner city people of color, this paper challenges the distortions wrought in our understanding from both of these factors and instead develops an alternative perspective for AIDS research among medical anthropologists and healt

Panic disorder, somatization, and the new cross-cultural psychiatry: the seven bodies of a medical anthropology of panic.

This article aims to adduce a framework that will allow for the cross-cultural study of panic disorder. The authors take sensation as the key unit of analysis, aiming to contribute to a medical anthropology of sensation. The seven analytic perspectives that are suggested in the article are the following: the full spectrum of panic attack sensations (the sensation body), the biological generation of panic sensations (the biological body), sensation as invoking an ethnophysiology (the ethnophysiological body), sensation as metaphor (the metaphoric body), sensation as invoking the landscape (the

Barriers to COVID-19 vaccinations and moral struggle among nurses in a Chinese community: A critical medical anthropology analysis.

BACKGROUND: Past studies have shown that people are less inclined to get vaccinated when healthcare providers are hesitant about the immunisation. Nurses have been documented as the most hesitant healthcare group towards COVID-19 vaccination in both Western and Chinese communities. This study investigates the perceptions of COVID-19 vaccines among nurses in a Chinese society and the reasons contributing to their high hesitancy. METHODS: A qualitative descriptive approach was used, involving in-depth semi-structured interviews from September to December 2022 with 35 nurses in Hong Kong who did

A Medical Anthropology Assessment of Community Liver Cancer Risks: Qualitative Comparisons of Communities with Different Risk Profiles in Thailand.

BACKGROUND: Thailand has the highest incidence rate of cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) in the world, and a high rate of hepatocellular carcinoma. Although risk factors for these two types of liver cancer have been identified, gaps persist in models for prevention. This qualitative study examined community awareness of liver cancer risk factors and prevention in rural Thailand. METHODS: Qualitative interviews were conducted with two groups from two villages in the north of Thailand. Village A (5 participants) has a high prevalence of CCA, while Village B (10 participants) has low prevalence. Open-end

Another silver lining?: Anthropological perspectives on the promise and practice of relaxed restrictions for telemedicine and medication-assisted treatment in the context of COVID-19.

As a response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the United States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has temporarily relaxed restrictions to serve people who are opioid dependent during social distancing mandates. Changes include allowing patients to take home more doses of methadone and buprenorphine rather than coming to the clinic every day (for methadone) or weekly (for buprenorphine) and relaxed restrictions on telehealth delivery. Telemedicine Program representatives have described the relaxing of federal regulations as a "silver lining" to the COVID-19 pandemic. Drawing from medical anthropo

Generative Hanging Out: Developing Engaged Practices for Health-Related Research1.

"Hanging out" with one's interlocutors generates ethnographic ways to creatively involve people in health care research. This special issue focusses on people who are difficult to engage in conventional research because they are not verbally fluent, such as people with dementia or learning disabilities, or who speak a language that the researcher does not understand. In this introduction I discuss how "Hanging out" shifts the goal-orientation of research practices toward relationships and settings. Hierarchies may be shifted to provide attractive possibilities for interlocutors to participate

Gender, body, biomedicine: how some feminist concerns dragged reproduction to the center of social theory.

This article tracks the growth of medical anthropology in the United States in the decades since the 1970s, as it has intersected the expansion of feminist activism and scholarship. I argue that feminist attention to embodied inequalities quickly focused on reproduction as a site of investigation and intervention. Medical anthropology has benefited from feminist concern with stratified reproduction, especially its interrogation of nonnormative and stigmatized fertility and childbearing. When reproduction becomes problematic, it provides a lens through which cultural norms, struggles, and trans

[Modern fertility technologies: challenges for psychosomatic anthropology].

In the present paper the topic is considered on the basis of homologous in-vitro fertilization, taking homologous test-tube fertilization as representative of other fertilization methods. The first part of the article considers a number of obvious forms of damage and symptoms, the second the simplified anthropology on which medical fertilization methods are based and the challenge--arising from this--to develop a new psychosomatic anthropology, crystallized in the paradigm of the advent of a child.

Finding Words for Feeling Bodies: Exploring Drawing Techniques in Dutch Care Practices.

Feeling is difficult to put into words. Anthropologists have been seeking ways to articulate feeling or other bodily experiences, looking beyond words and borrowing from artistic methods. Drawings, for instance, have been used to make visible what words cannot describe and attributed with qualities associated with feeling or the body. Instead of placing drawing in opposition to words, and words in opposition to bodies, this article presents different ways of using drawing as an ethnographic technique to tentatively find practice-specific words to articulate practices of feeling the body. Multi-sensorial perceptions of risk: the aesthetics behind (muco)cutaneous leishmaniasis-related stigma in Ecuador.

Previous research on the stigma associated with cutaneous leishmaniasis, a vector-transmitted parasitic disease, focuses on aesthetic appearance affectation as the leading cause of stigmatisation. However, Indigenous populations in the hinterland of Amazonian Ecuador trigger stigma expressions by recognising (muco)cutaneous leishmaniasis, primarily through atypical smell, followed by the odd voice sound, appearance and taste. This empirical way of recognising symptoms relies on embodied forms of identifying a disease, contrasting the Western supremacy of visuality and demanding to be understoo
