Antibiosis of Necrotizing Pancreatitis.

BACKGROUND: Necrotizing pancreatitis is a life-threatening presentation of acute pancreatitis. The mortality of 20-80% initially depends on the persistence of organ failure and systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) and, in the later course of the disease, on secondary infection of the necrosis. The questions whether prophylactic antibiotics aiming to prevent this infection should be administered and which antibiotic is the best to use, as well as the problem of fungal infection under antibiotic treatment are still intriguing and insufficiently solved. METHODS: A search of the literat

Calculated Antibiosis of Acute Cholangitis and Cholecystitis.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this article is to present the most recent suggestions for the therapy of acute cholangitis and cholecystitis based on a review of the current literature. METHODS: We performed a systematic literature search in the Medline, PubMed, and Google Scholar databases using the keywords mentioned above. This article is strongly influenced by the publication of the Tokyo Guidelines for the management of acute cholangitis and cholecystitis (TG07, TG13) in 2007 and 2013. These were the first practical guidelines targeting diagnosis and treatment of acute cholangitis and cholecysti

Improved deferred antagonism technique for detecting antibiosis.

The deferred antagonism technique has been utilized for several decades for detecting antibiosis activity. Most protocols require the elimination of antibiotic-producing cells by exposing them to chloroform vapour, UV radiation or filter sterilizing the filtrate steps that require additional time and expense to complete. We provide a modified approach to current soft agar overlay practices, which involves addition of antibiotics to the soft agar overlay to inhibit growth of the producer but not the indicator strain. This technique can be used to reproducibly and efficiently screen for antibiot

Competition and antibiosis in the biological control of potato scab.

Nonpathogenic, antibiotic-producing streptomycetes have been shown to reduce potato scab when added to disease-conducive soil. Spontaneous mutants of the pathogenic Streptomyces scabies RB4 that are resistant to at least one antibiotic activity produced by the nonpathogenic suppressive isolates Streptomyces diastatochromogenes strain PonSSII and S. scabies PonR have been isolated. To determine the importance of antibiosis in this biocontrol system, these mutants were investigated for their ability to cause disease in the presence of the two pathogen antagonists in a greenhouse assay. Disease c

A re-appraisal of the conventional history of antibiosis and Penicillin.

The popular perception of the history of antibiosis and penicillin is that Alexander Fleming was the sole researcher on penicillin. The literature, however, has documentation of preceding persons who reported definitively on these topics, from the late 19th century. Divergent reports on "firsts" in the discovery of antimicrobial activity of Penicillium and on the use of penicillin as a therapeutic agent, are present. This review adds knowledge from diverse sources, and restores historical priorities to the conventional story of Penicillin.

Iodinene Nanosheet-to-Iodine Molecule Allotropic Transformation for Antibiosis.

Iodine, as a typical haloid element in group VIIA, has been extensively applied as antiseptics clinically, thanks to its effective and wide-spectrum antimicrobial activity against bacteria, fungi, and viruses. Nevertheless, current iodic sterilizing agents are still limited to topical applications such as instrument sterilization and treatments of skin or mucous membrane infection due to its unsatisfactory stability and biocompatibility. Here, we propose an emerging two-dimensional iodine nanomaterial (noted as iodinene) for the treatment of infection diseases in vivo. Iodinene nanosheets were

[Surgical revision of the pilonidal sinus with single shot antibiosis].

For a therapy of the pilonidal sinus there are different surgical and non-surgical methods to be found in literature. In our surgical wing 140 male patients have been operated on this disease from September 1990 to July 1992. 16 cases out of these 140 were re-operations. Using a special surgical technique we applied the excision with a primary closure under single-shot antibiosis in 139 cases. By modifying this antibiosis prophylaxis we could reach a primary success healing rate of up to 96%. A retrospective study among our patients showed a recurrence rate of 5%.

A Biocompatible ZIF-8 Spray and Its Long-Lasting Antibiosis.

Current antibacterial sprays face major limitations, including rapid evaporation, short-lived efficacy, skin irritation, and poor adhesion to surfaces, highlighting an urgent need for a durable and biocompatible alternative. To address these challenges, we developed a ZIF-8-based spray (ZNS-WO20) composed of ZIF-8 nanoparticles dispersed in 50% ethanol and 20% OTES. OTES acts as a dispersant and binder, enabling wash-resistant coatings on gauze and glass. ZIF-8 exhibits pH-responsive Zn2+ release, achieving nearly 100% killing of S. aureus, E. coli, and methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) a

A multifunctional quaternary chitosan/sericin composite sponge for antibiosis and hemostasis.

Effective management of traumatic and infected wounds remains challenging because hemorrhage, bacterial contamination, and impaired early repair often occur simultaneously. This study designed a multifunctional composite sponge via physical cross-linking between quaternary chitosan (QCS) and silk sericin (SER), further loaded with dicresulene diammonium (Di). The QCS/SER/Di sponge was systematically evaluated for its physicochemical properties, biocompatibility and functional performance. The sponge formulations exhibited hemolysis ratios below 5%, while significantly enhancing fibroblast migr

Molecular war and peace: the concurrent path to antibiosis and antibiotic resistance.

The possibility of the emergence of proto-antibiotic and proto-resistance molecules in the prebiotic world, as primary elements involved in "molecular wars," is examined in this conceptual review. Throughout the Earth's early history, prebiotic chemical processes produced molecules that associated both randomly and persistently. Over time, those configurations that achieved greater stability were favored, their longevity effectively serving as a mechanism for prebiotic selection. Available chemical molecules or physical surfaces could stabilize and prolong the duration of certain aggregates, c

A spatiotemporal drug release scaffold with antibiosis and bone regeneration for osteomyelitis.

INTRODUCTION: Scaffolds loaded with antibacterial agents and osteogenic drugs are considered essential tools for repairing bone defects caused by osteomyelitis. However, the simultaneous release of two drugs leads to premature osteogenesis and subsequent sequestrum formation in the pathological situation of unthorough antibiosis. OBJECTIVES: In this study, a spatiotemporal drug-release polydopamine-functionalized mesoporous silicon nanoparticle (MSN) core/shell drug delivery system loaded with antibacterial silver (Ag) nanoparticles and osteogenic dexamethasone (Dex) was constructed and intro

Unmasking Hidden Seed Resistance to Storage Pests: Testing Antibiosis and Antixenosis.

Postharvest seed losses caused by stored-product insect pests can reach 90%, depending on the commodity, country, and storage technology, resulting in considerable economic losses and threats to food safety and security. Breeding genotypes (varieties, hybrids, landraces, inbred lines, etc.) resistant to insect pests is among the most effective pest management methods, although it has not yet been explored in detail or used to control stored-product pests. To help breeders develop resistant genotypes, it is a prerequisite to identify inherently resistant lines, identify seed defense traits, and

Characterization of Antibiosis to Diabrotica speciosa (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) in Brazilian Maize Landraces.

Resistance to insect pests can be found in several native, landrace plants and can be an important alternative to conventional control methods. Diabrotica speciosa (Germar) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) larvae are important maize (Zea mays L.) (Cyperales: Poaceae) root pests and finding native resistance in landraces would greatly contribute to maize-breeding programs aimed at controlling this pest. This study investigated whether the growth, survival, oviposition rhythm, fecundity, and fertility of D. speciosa are negatively influenced by specific maize landraces, and the existence of any morph

Fluoride releasing photothermal responsive TiO2 matrices for antibiosis, biosealing and bone regeneration.

Peri-implantitis induced by infection leads to gingival recession, alveolar resorption and eventual dental implant failure. So, antibiosis and biosealing of abutments as well as osseointegration of roots need to be projected seriously during the whole service lifespan of dental implants. In this work, a multipurpose photothermal therapy strategy based on Si/P/F doped TiO2 matrix is proposed to address the above issues. This TiO2 matrix not only has outstanding photothermal response, but also triggers the release of F ions under near-infrared (NIR) light irradiation. Local hyperthermia assisted

Antibiosis of Burkholderia ubonensis againist Burkholderia pseudomallei, the causative agent for melioidosis.

Melioidosis, caused by Burkholderia pseudomallei, is an enigmatic infectious disease that afflicts individuals in many tropical and developing regions. Treatment is hampered by the organism's innate antibiotic resistance and the disease's non-pathognomic presentation. Recently, added attention has been given to this organism due to its classification as a potential biowarfare agent. Therefore, methods of preventing acquisition of infection are needed. We investigated antagonism between Burkholderia spp and B. pseudomallei derived from the same ecological niche in a melioidosis endemic region i
