Active antiracism through surgical education.

INTRODUCTION: Disparities in surgical outcomes are well documented. Racial/ethnic minorities are also disproportionately underrepresentated in surgery; however, most surgeons do not acknowledge the existence of disparities. Diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) education in surgery is needed, yet DEI education is often confined to designated diversity lectures, limiting depth of content. Underrepresented minorities (URMs) are also more likely to be tasked with leading DEI initiatives, perpetuating the minority tax and limiting non-URM engagement. METHODS: A DEI curriculum was implemented in

Holding Space for Facilitated Dialogues on Antiracism in Academic Medicine.

The year 2020 brought unprecedented challenges and renewed focus on racial disparities and inequities in the United States. For racial and ethnic minority groups, and in particular African Americans, racial disparities have been a constant presence and threat from the time of slavery through the present day. These racial disparities, sanctioned and maintained by institutional racism, manifest in all aspects of life for African Americans-segregated and unequal education and housing systems, health and mental health care disparities, disproportionally elevated incarceration rates, and, as painfu

PRESENCE//Gifted: On Poetry, Antiracism, and Epistemic Violence in Health Promotion.

Through poetry, I offer a critical reflection on the racialized contexts, consequences, and (mis)representations of overlapping pandemics-COVID-19 and structural racism-crafted as counternarrative to public health's and medicine's ahistorical, apolitical, and racist proclivities in times of crises (e.g., plague, 1918 flu, HIV/AIDS, addiction, racialized police violence). I weave public health and medical concepts together with Black music, poetry, scholarship, and history to (re)frame/analyze interconnections between COVID-19 and structural racism-centering love, resistance, and solidarity to

Building an Infectious Disease Diversity, Equity, and Antiracism (ID2EA) Curriculum: A Single Center's Experience and Reflections.

In response to longstanding healthcare inequities unmasked by the Coronavirus Disease 2019 pandemic, the infectious diseases (ID) section at the Yale School of Medicine designed and implemented a pilot curriculum integrating Infectious Disease Diversity, Equity, and Antiracism (ID2EA) into ID educational training and measured program outcomes. We herein describe a mixed-methods assessment of section members on whether the ID2EA curriculum affected their beliefs and behaviors regarding racism and healthcare inequities. Participants rated the curriculum as useful (92% averaging across sessions)

Antiracism and positive intergenerational (infant) outcomes: A county-level examination of low birth weight and infant mortality.

Racism is associated with negative intergenerational (infant) outcomes. That is, racism, both perceived and structural, is linked to critical, immediate, and long-term health factors such as low birth weight and infant mortality. Antiracism-resistance to racism such as support for the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement-has been linked to positive emotional, subjective, and mental health outcomes among adults and adolescents. To theoretically build on and integrate such past findings, the present research asked whether such advantageous health correlations might extend intergenerationally to inf

An Antiracism Community-Based Participatory Research With Organizations Serving Immigrant and Marginalized Communities, Including Asian Americans and Native Hawaiians/Pacific Islanders in the United States Pacific Northwest: Qualitative Description Study With Key Informants.

BACKGROUND: Asian American (AA) community leaders, Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander (NH/PI) community leaders, and allies in the United States Pacific Northwest expressed concern that there are families and children from AA communities and NH/PI communities who experience and witness acts of xenophobia and racism. This can cause racial trauma. The long-time practice of aggregating AA and NH/PI data contributes to erasure and makes it challenging to advance health equity, such as allocating resources. According to AAPI Data's long-awaited report in June 2022, there are over 24 million AAs and 1

Antiracist Curriculum Implementation for Pediatric Residents.

OBJECTIVES: Racism has been recognized as a public health crisis, with calls for greater focus on antiracism in medical training. We sought to evaluate a longitudinal antiracist curriculum among pediatric residents. METHODS: In 2020-2021, we delivered seven educational sessions to pediatric trainees in a single residency program. We administered pre-/post-surveys to assess changes in awareness of structural racism, knowledge of health inequities, antiracist clinical skills, and individual/institutional advocacy behaviors. Awareness was measured with 27 Likert-type items spanning five conceptu

What Would Equitable Harm Reduction Look Like?

Structural determinants of health frameworks must express antiracism to be effective, but racial and ethnic inequities are widely documented, even in harm reduction programs that focus on person-centered interventions. Harm reduction strategies should express social justice and health equity, resist stigma and discrimination, and mitigate marginalization experiences among people who use drugs (PWUD). To do so, government and organizational policies that promote harm reduction must acknowledge historical and ongoing patterns of racializing drug use. This article gives examples of such racializa

"But I Love the Colored": Unpacking White Emotional Defensiveness and Racial Harm in Nursing Academia.

This paper examines the discursive, emotional, and institutional dynamics embedded in the racially defensive statement, "But I love the Colored," voiced by a white nurse leader in academia. The phrase "the Colored," a US-specific designation rooted in Jim Crow-era segregation, is deliberately retained to surface how segregationist vocabulary can be effectively reactivated in contemporary academic settings. While seemingly well-intentioned, such language reveals the enduring mechanisms of whiteness in nursing academia, including benevolent racism, white emotionality, and the rhetorical deflecti

Critical Reflection into Action: Facilitating Conditions of Antiracist Action among White Youth in the Netherlands.

Critical reflection is a necessary yet not sufficient prerequisite for critical action, but little is known about conditions that facilitate associations between the two. This study investigates when associations between critical reflection on racism and antiracist action among White youth in the Netherlands are stronger, examining critical motivation, parental ethnic-racial socialization, and intergroup friendships as facilitating conditions. 338 17-21-years old White youth (M = 19.44, SD = 1.28, 73% female) participated in a survey study. The identified positive association between critical

Indigenous excellence: confronting racism and complicity in peer review.

Racism in peer review is a common, structurally embedded, and systemic problem. However, it is often framed as isolated acts of individual-level bias. Racism in peer review manifests across interconnected societal, system, and process levels, shaping who participates in knowledge production, what is deemed credible evidence, and whose work is published. This Indigenous-led Perspective examines racism in peer review through a three-layer framework: (1) societal, (2) system, and (3) process (decision-making and interpersonal), situating peer review as one domain within the broader problem of ant

Structural Racism in Healthcare: Nurses' Ethical and Professional Responsibility to Lead Structural Reform.

BACKGROUND: Structural racism remains a pervasive and deeply embedded determinant of healthcare inequity globally. Despite strengthened professional standards and policy commitments to equity, racialised populations continue to experience substantial disparities in healthcare access, quality, safety and outcomes. These inequities are sustained not only through interpersonal encounters but also through structural conditions embedded within healthcare systems, workforce arrangements, governance processes and organisational cultures. Structural racism additionally affects nurses' wellbeing, workf

(Re)imagining the Future of Genetic Counseling: A Reflexive Qualitative Analysis of Sociopolitical Power, Cultural Safety, Systemic Racism, and Comparative Practice in the United Kingdom, Aotearoa New Zealand and, Australia.

Genetic counseling is undergoing a rapid transformation as genomic medicine becomes embedded within mainstream healthcare systems. At the same time, the profession is being challenged to respond to systemic racism, colonial legacies, technological change, and evolving expectations regarding equity and justice. Historically, genetic counseling emerged within twentieth-century medical genetics and was influenced by political, social, scientific, and medical forces that included eugenic ideology, values, and practices. The profession has since evolved substantially toward psychosocial, patient-ce

Equity, regulation and Te Tiriti o Waitangi: a rapid review of Putting Patients First.

The Crown's health workforce reforms, Putting Patients First: Modernising health workforce regulation (PPF),1 emerge in a political climate that is actively dismantling Māori health gains, undermining tino rangatiratanga and reframing equity as "needs not race". Using rapid Tiriti review-an adaptation of critical Tiriti analysis-we assessed the proposal's alignment with Te Tiriti o Waitangi. We found that PPF did not align well with the preamble or the articles of Te Tiriti. There was no equity analysis; no acknowledgement of hauora as taonga, limited Māori involvement in decision making, eras

Academics for Black Survival and Wellness: A Grassroots Intervention for Black Liberation and Anti-Racism Inside and Outside of Academia.

This article provides a summative program evaluation to describe the development, implementation, and outcomes of a grassroots Black liberation and anti-racism initiative, Academics for Black Survival and Wellness. The initiative was founded by Dr. Pearis Jean (formerly Bellamy; graduate student at the time) and Dr. Della V. Mosley (an assistant professor at the time) in response to the events of 2020. The authors used a general inductive approach to analyze archival data from the initiative to identify the program outcomes. Academics for Black Survival and Wellness had two primary program out

A Health Equity-Driven Approach to Primary Care for the Child Born Premature.

Every year, 1 in 10 children is born premature in the United States. Although survival rates for children born premature have improved, health and educational disparities remain persistent across their lifetime compared to full-term peers. Recent attention has been given to the promotion of health and development for children born premature through high-risk follow-up programs. However, there remains limited guidance in primary care and, in particular, guidance with an emphasis on health equity-an even more important focus given the often heightened medical and social needs of children born pr

The racial trauma task force: Clinical-community psychology approaches to healing racial trauma during COVID-19.

Due to an increase in media and news attention on anti-Black racism in 2020, the APA declared racism a pandemic as the CDC highlighted the challenges related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Thus, the work described in the current manuscript took place during what is referred to as a double pandemic for Black people in the United States. This paper discusses the impact of this period on a department and its students, the training students advocated for in response to the urgent need for more support for Black communities, and the approaches they used to address racial stress and trauma during this un
