Update on Antisocial Personality Disorder.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Antisocial personality disorder (ASPD) is a characterized by lifelong or recurrent behavioral problems that begin in childhood or early adolescence. This communication provides an overview on ASPD including findings from recent reviews and new research. RECENT FINDINGS: With regard to DSM-5's Section III Alternative Model of Personality Disorder criteria for ASPD, advocates point to the broader symptom coverage and harmonization with ICD-11; yet critics point to the lack of evidence for improved outcomes. A new report shows that antisocial individuals age faster than non-an

Antisocial Personality as a Neurodevelopmental Disorder.

Although antisocial personality disorder (APD) is one of the most researched personality disorders, it is still surprisingly resistant to treatment. This lack of clinical progress may be partly due to the failure to view APD as a neurodevelopmental disorder and to consider early interventions. After first defining what constitutes a neurodevelopmental disorder, this review evaluates the extent to which APD meets neurodevelopmental criteria, covering structural and functional brain imaging, neurocognition, genetics and epigenetics, neurochemistry, and early health risk factors. Antisocial personality disorder and pathological gambling.

The prevalence of antisocial personality disorder and its relationship to criminal offenses in pathological gamblers was investigated. A semi-structured interview schedule containing DSM-III criteria for antisocial personality and the California Psychological Inventory Socialisation subscale was administered to a sample of 306 pathological gamblers. Of the total sample, 35% reported no offense. Forty eight percent admitted to the commission of a gambling related offense, 6% to a non-gambling related offense, and 11% to both types of offense. Fifteen percent of subjects met DSM-III diagnostic c

The neurobiology of antisocial personality disorder.

Despite increasing recognition that there is a neurobiological basis of antisocial behavior in addition to its psychosocial foundation, much less is known about the specificity of the neurobiological findings to the psychiatric condition of antisocial personality disorder (APD). This article provides a review of research on genetic, brain imaging, neurocognitive, and psychophysiological factors in relation to assessments of APD. Findings show that there are significant genetic effects on APD, particularly related to the serotonergic system, as well as abnormalities in brain regions such as the

Histrionic personality disorder and antisocial personality disorder: sex-differentiated manifestations of psychopathy?

Little is known about the etiology of histrionic personality disorder (HPD) or its relation to other personality disorders. In this study, we examined whether HPD is etiologically related to psychopathy and more specifically whether HPD and antisocial personality disorder (ASPD) are sex-typed alternative manifestations of psychopathy. In addition, based on Newman's (1987) response modulation hypothesis of psychopathy, we examined the associations between psychopathic, HPD, and ASPD features and performance on laboratory measures of passive avoidance errors and interference effects. 2D:4D-ratios among individuals with amphetamine use disorder, antisocial personality disorder and with both amphetamine use disorder and antisocial personality disorder.

BACKGROUND: There is sufficient evidence that the index-finger-to-ring-finger-ratio (2D:4D-ratio) is associated with testosterone and estrogen exposure during the fetal stage. More specifically, a lower 2D:4D-ratio (that is; a shorter index finger, compared to a longer ring finger) was associated with a prenatally higher testosterone and lower estrogen exposure during the first trimester of the fetal stage. At a behavioral level, among adults, a lower 2D:4D-ratio was associated with a higher competitive performance among both female and male professional athletes, and with personality traits s

Antisocial personality disorder and TC treatment outcomes.

There is a belief that persons diagnosed with antisocial personality disorder (APD) do not respond well to treatment, but the existing research has not supported this hypothesis. This study examined the relationship of APD to therapeutic community (TC) treatment outcomes. A total of 275 men and women were randomly assigned to two TCs. It was hypothesized that clients diagnosed with APD via the Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory (MCMI-II) would have poorer treatment outcomes than those with no APD. The MCMI-II was used to diagnose APD because of its focus in underlying pathological personalit

The Natural History of Antisocial Personality Disorder.

Antisocial personality disorder (ASPD) is characterized by a pattern of socially irresponsible, exploitative, and guiltless behaviour. ASPD is associated with co-occurring mental health and addictive disorders and medical comorbidity. Rates of natural and unnatural death (suicide, homicide, and accidents) are excessive. ASPD is a predictor of poor treatment response. ASPD begins early in life, usually by age 8 years. Diagnosed as conduct disorder in childhood, the diagnosis converts to ASPD at age 18 if antisocial behaviours have persisted. While chronic and lifelong for most people with ASPD,

Antisocial Personality Disorder in Bipolar Disorder: A Systematic Review.

Background and Objectives: Bipolar Disorder (BD) is a severe psychiatric disorder that worsens quality of life and functional impairment. Personality disorders (PDs), in particular Cluster B personality, have a high incidence among BD patients and is considered a poor prognostic factor. The study of this co-morbidity represents an important clinical and diagnostic challenge in psychiatry. Particularly, clinical overlap has been shown between antisocial personality disorder (ASPD) and BD that could worsen the course of both disorders. We aimed to detect the frequency of ASPD in bipolar patients

Attribution of antisocial symptoms in coexistent antisocial personality disorder and substance abuse.

Two methods for diagnosing antisocial personality disorder (ASPD) were compared based on whether antisocial symptoms that occurred when subjects also experienced alcohol- or other drug-related problems were counted toward the diagnosis of ASPD. From a family study of alcoholism and ASPD, 93 male subjects who met ASPD criteria in the absence of substance-related problems were contrasted with 312 subjects who were diagnosed with ASPD regardless of whether criterion symptoms occurred along with substance-related problems. Subjects did not differ in types of antisocial behaviors, age of onset of b

Antisocial personality disorder in primary care patients with somatization disorder.

Antisocial personality disorder and somatization disorder (SD) have been associated in previous research conducted primarily in patients from the mental health setting. We tested the hypothesis that patients with SD from the primary care setting had less likelihood of having comorbid antisocial personality disorder in a sample of 118 patients with SD. Two methods for diagnosing antisocial personality disorder were used: the Diagnostic Interview Schedule (DIS) and the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-III-R, axis II (SCID-II). Eight percent of the women and between 18% and 25% (depending on

Diagnosis and subtypes of adolescent antisocial personality disorder.

The present study examined the application of the Antisocial Personality Disorder (APD) diagnosis to adolescents and investigated the possibility of subtypes of APD adolescents. As part of a broader study of adolescent personality in clinically-referred patients, experienced clinicians provided personality data on a randomly selected patient in their care using the SWAP-II-A personality pathology instrument. Three hundred thirteen adolescents met adult DSM-IV diagnostic criteria for APD. To characterize adolescents with the disorder, we aggregated the data to identify the items most descriptiv

The endocannabinoid system in borderline personality disorder and antisocial personality disorder: A scoping review.

Individuals with borderline personality disorder (BPD) or antisocial personality disorder (ASPD) are overrepresented in forensic settings. Yet, despite the burden these disorders place on healthcare and criminal justice systems, there remains a lack of evidence-based pharmacological treatments. Epidemiological data have shown that comorbid cannabis use disorders are common in BPD and ASPD. ∆9 -Tetrahydrocannabinol, the primary psychoactive constituent of cannabis, is an exogenous cannabinoid that stimulates the endocannabinoid system (ECS). Hence, an investigation of the ECS in these condition

Sadistic personality disorder in sex offenders: relationship to antisocial personality disorder and sexual sadism.

To investigate the relationship of sadistic personality disorder (SPD), as defined in the appendix of DSM-III-R, to other personality disorders and to sexual sadism, 70 sex offenders (27 child molesters, 33 rapists, and 10 murderers) were assessed by the International Personality Disorder Examination. In 19 subjects (27.2%) from the total sample, SPD was diagnosed. The highest overlap appeared with borderline personality disorder (31.6%) and antisocial personality disorder (42.1%). However, in four cases SPD was the only personality disorder diagnosed. Factor analysis of the antisocial and sad

The relationship of histrionic personality disorder to antisocial personality and somatization disorders.

The authors examined the association of antisocial personality disorder, somatization disorder, and histrionic personality disorder, both within individuals and within families, in 250 patients. All three disorders overlapped considerably within individuals; the strongest relationship was between antisocial personality and histrionic personality. A high prevalence of antisocial personality was reported in the families of patients with somatization disorder but not in the families of patients with histrionic personality. The authors suggest that histrionic individuals develop antisocial persona
