BACKGROUND: Imaging diagnostic methods are essential for a complete understanding of the liver function and may aid in early detection of hepatic disorders.
METHODS: Sixty-nine owl monkeys were grouped in three age groups (AG): AG1 (<2 years old, n = 14), 2 (2-6 years old, n = 21), and 3 (>7 years old, n = 34). The animals were evaluated by ultrasound, liver function tests, and hemogram.
RESULTS: The ultrasound revealed abnormal findings in the parenchyma ("starry sky" and steatosis) and/or in the gallbladder (cholelithiasis, septum, and wall edema) in 17 individuals, with higher incidence i

BACKGROUND: The "starry sky" (SK) liver is ultrasonographic pattern characterized by multiple hyperechogenic foci in hepatic parenchyma. The study aimed to characterize the microscopic hepatic lesions in captive owl monkeys with SK liver.
METHODS: Thirty-seven clinically healthy owl monkeys had their liver scanned and 18 of them had liver biopsy. Animals with SK and peliosis hepatis (PH) were subjected to immunohistochemical and molecular screening for Bartonella spp.
RESULTS: SK liver occurred in 59.4% (22/37) of the owl monkeys. Biopsied animals showed steatosis, hydropic degeneration, hem

Myiases are parasitic infections caused by the larval stages of some fly species. In American nonhuman primates (NHP), three bot fly species causing cutaneous myiasis have been reported: Cuterebra baeri, Cochliomyia hominivorax, and Dermatobia hominis. Studies on myiasis in NHP are scarce and mainly based on morphologic identification of larvae, while molecular approaches have been barely used. This study aimed to molecularly identify bot flies parasitizing two NHP species living sympatrically in central Colombia. Bot fly larvae were collected from two grey-legged night monkeys (Aotus griseime

BACKGROUND: Owl monkeys (Aotus infulatus) are frequently affected by heart diseases and, as in humans, dyslipidemia is one of the predisposing factors for adverse cardiovascular events. In view of this, the study of the lipid profile and plasma apolipoproteins can contribute to the clinical management of this neotropical primate species.
METHODS: Lipid profile as well as A-1 and B apolipoprotein values were analyzed in 60 owl monkeys, studying their relationship with body biometry and the presence of cardiac alterations.
RESULTS: Animals suspected of having heart disease did not show signifi

Perinephric pseudocysts consist of variable accumulations of either urine, lymph, or blood in a fibrous sac surrounding one or both kidneys. Perinephric pseudocysts are occasionally reported in cats and humans and very rarely in other species. Here we describe a case of bilateral perinephric pseudocysts in an owl monkey.

Nocturnal mammals have unique sensory adaptations to facilitate foraging at night. Owl monkeys (Aotus spp.) are pair-living nocturnal platyrrhines adept at capturing insect prey under low-light conditions. Owl monkeys use acoustic and chemical cues in intraspecific communication and use olfaction to detect fruit as they forage. We conducted an experiment to determine which cues (auditory, olfactory, and visual) Aotus nancymaae rely upon when foraging for insects. We scored the behavior of 23 captive owl monkeys during a series of trials in which monkeys were provided sensory boxes with insect

Morphological abnormalities are rarely reported in night monkeys; in particular, eye problems in wild individuals are relatively rare in the literature. We present for the first time a record of corneal opacity in two wild individuals of the species Aotus lemurinus in the Andean region of Colombia. In this study, we found cases of corneal opacity probably associated with infectious and contagious processes, injuries resulting from attacks, the age of the individuals, and the health status of the groups in wildlife. We encourage researchers to report their observations of wild primates with ocu

BACKGROUND: An adult male owl monkey (Aotus nancymae) underwent a splenectomy. When the spleen was removed, a small, nodular mass slightly bulging over the splenic surface was noted.
METHODS: The mass was examined by light and transmission electron microscopy and by immunohistochemistry.
RESULTS: On light microscopy, the mass was well-circumscribed, non-encapsulated, and composed of haphazardly arranged smooth muscle bundles admixed with numerous small capillary-like structures containing blood. Immunohistochemical (IHC) staining revealed the tumor was strongly positive for smooth muscle act

In animals, multisystemic eosinophilic disease is a rare condition characterized by eosinophilic and lymphoplasmacytic infiltrates in various organs. This disorder resembles the human disease known as hypereosinophilic syndrome, a condition defined by prolonged peripheral eosinophilia in the absence of recognizable etiology and associated with end-organ damage. In this report we describe a research-naïve, colony-born, juvenile female owl monkey (Aotus vociferans) who presented clinically with severe respiratory distress and histologically with multiple end-organ infiltration with phenotypicall

Owl monkeys are small nocturnal new world primates in the genus Aotus that are most used in biomedical research for malaria. Cardiomyopathy and nephropathy are well-described common diseases contributing to their morbidity and mortality; less is known about lesions affecting the gastrointestinal tract. Records from a 14-year period (2008-2022) at the Keeling Center for Comparative Medicine and Research were queried to identify instances of spontaneous gastrointestinal disease that directly contributed to the cause of death from the 235 adult owl monkeys submitted for necropsy. Of the 235, 10.6

Neoplasms are only sporadically reported in New World primates and rarely in owl monkeys (Aotus spp.), specifically. Previous reports of neoplasms in owl monkeys are primarily restricted to lymphoma induced by Herpesvirus saimiri infection, although other tumors in the central nervous, genitourinary, gastrointestinal, and endocrine systems have been sporadically reported. Herein, we describe 3 previously unreported neoplasms in owl monkeys (Aotus nancymaae) including a pericardial mesothelioma in a 6-year-old male, a nephroblastoma in a 2-year-old male, and a cervical neoplasm with characteris

Our understanding of the viability of primates in anthropogenically fragmented habitats is undermined by the long timeframes for the effects of fragmentation to manifest. Studying primates in natural forest islands can better reveal the limits to habitat viability in the face of fragmentation. We present a study of a group of Azara's owl monkeys (Aotus azarae) occupying a 0.53 ha forest "island", the smallest such forest island and territory ever documented for the genus Aotus. We radio collared one individual and then, for ten months, collected ecological and behavioural data on the island an

BACKGROUND: Owl monkeys are nonhuman primate species in the genus Aotus. The Michale E. Keeling Center for Comparative Medicine and Research maintains an Owl Monkey Breeding and Research Resource composed of four species of owl monkeys: Aotus nancymai, A. vociferans, A. azarae, and A. griseimembra. Disease of the hepatobiliary system has not been well characterized in Aotus.
METHODS: Necropsy records from a 17-year period were reviewed to characterize the gross and microscopic lesions of liver disease.
RESULTS: 316 adult owl monkeys were submitted for necropsy in the review period; 22 of 316

BACKGROUND: Few well-established in vivo animal models reflect the complexity of human malaria infection and immunity, and even fewer have been predictive of the potential of malaria vaccines or prophylactic therapies. Here, we characterized and optimized an Aotus nancymaae non-human primate (NHP) model of Plasmodium vivax (Pv) blood stage infection to enable the testing of novel vaccines and immunoprophylactics.
METHODS: Using direct blood stage infection, we selected Vietnam-IV as the most virulent P. vivax strain from seven monkey adapted strains. We next determined the infectious dose wit

Dengue viruses (DENV) are currently responsible for more human morbidity and mortality than any other known arbovirus, and all four DENV are known to exist in sylvatic cycles that might allow these viruses to persist if the urban (Aedes aegypti) cycle could be controlled. To determine whether DENV were being maintained in a sylvatic cycle in a forested area about 14 km southwest of Iquitos, Peru, a city in which all 4 serotypes of DENV circulate, we placed 20 DENV seronegative Aotus monkeys in cages either in the canopy or near ground level for a total of 125.6 months. Despite capturing >66,00

This case report describes the ultrasonographic findings during an idiopathic spontaneous abortion in an owl monkey. The female owl monkey presented for a transabdominal ultrasonogram to evaluate her pregnancy. This evaluation is a routine monitoring procedure in our owl monkey breeding colony. Although the fetus and placenta appeared normal at the initial scan, no fetal heartbeat could be detected. We followed the abortion with serial ultrasonographic scans and documented complete involution of the uterus post-abortion.

1. These experiments were designed to test the hypothesis that temporally correlated afferent input activity plays a lifelong role in the establishment and modification of receptive fields (RFs) and representational topographies in the primary somatosensory cortex of adult monkeys. They were based in part on the finding that adjacent digits of the hand are represented discontinuously in area 3b of the adult owl monkey. If cortical receptive fields and the details of cortical topographic representations are shaped by the weights of the temporal correlations among afferent inputs, then represent

More than 50 years ago the owl monkey (genus Aotus) was found to be highly susceptible to developing human malaria, making it an excellent experimental model for this disease. Microbes and parasites' (especially malaria) tremendous genetic variability became resolved during our malaria vaccine development, involving conserved peptides having high host cell binding activity (cHABPs); however, cHABPs are immunologically silent and must be specially modified (mHABPs) to induce a perfect fit into major histocompatibility complex (MHC) molecules (HLA in humans). Since malarial immunity is mainly an

BACKGROUND: A table summarizing the primary literature on 19 species of longevous non-human primates, other than owl monkey, is presented.
METHODS: We prospectively quantitated the sleep of a longevous female owl monkey (Aotus azarae), aged >30 years, longitudinally for 2 years and also evaluated the senility-induced change in spinal curvature.
RESULTS: The mean daily total sleep time (TST) of this monkey ranged between 790 and 1106 minutes, and was markedly higher in comparison with its female progeny (aged 16 years and used as a control) whose daily TST during the same experimental period
