Calcium-deficient carbonate apatites in urinary calculi from 17 patients have been studied. Magnesium ions in each case were detected as a component of apatite. In most of the cases, CO23- ions were included in the apatitic lattice. Using a calcination procedure, we have determined the most probable average value for the CO23- content, degree of deficiency, x, and the Mg/Ca ratio in each sample.

Fluoride (F-)-substituted B-type carbonate hydroxyapatite (CHAP) powders were prepared for application as bone substitute materials having the ability to enhance bone formation and to suppress bone resorption due to the therapeutic effect of F-. F- was adsorbed on CHAP in a sodium fluoride solution followed by heating at 700 degrees C in carbon dioxide flow to substitute F- for the hydroxyl ion in the CHAP structure. The F- contents in the F-substituted CHAP powders were 16-22 times greater than that in normal adult human bones. The carbonate ion contents in the F-substituted CHAP powders corr

Acute periarthritis is a typical example of apatite arthropathy related to intratendinous calcifications. The attack may be followed by virtually complete radiological disappearance of the calcification. Within the joint one may exceptionally demonstrate the presence of hydroxyapatite crystals in the synovial fluid during a fluxional flare-up of arthrosis or in the fluid withdrawn from the humeral joint following rupture of calcification in the glenohumeral cavity. More frequently, the crystals are detected in the synovial fluid from joints damaged by advanced destructive arthrosis. These crys

The aim of the current work was to study the physico-chemical interactions of a bisphosphonate molecule, risedronate, with a well-characterised synthetic nanocrystalline apatite (NCA) as a model bone mineral. We adopted a global approach, using complementary physico-chemical techniques such as FTIR, RAMAN and NMR spectroscopies in order to learn more about the interaction process of risedronate with the apatitic surface. The results obtained suggest that risedronate adsorption corresponds to an ion substitution reaction with phosphate ions occurring at the crystal surface. This mechanism expla

Osteoporosis represents a major public health problem and increases patient morbidity through its association with fragility fractures. Among the different treatments proposed, strontium-based drugs have been shown to increase bone mass in postmenopausal osteoporosis patients and to reduce fracture risk. While the localization of Sr(2+) cations in the bone matrix has been extensively studied, little is known regarding the status of Sr(2+) cations in natural biological apatite. In this investigation the local environment of Sr(2+) cations has been investigated through XANES (X-ray absorption ne

Deposition of apatite crystals can be observed as calcific periarthritis and articular calcifications. Deposition of these crystals in the tendons and bursae of the rotator cuff of the shoulder is found in about 3% of adults; it is most of the time asymptomatic. Calcifications often totally disappear after an acute flare up. Intraarticular apatite crystals can be identified in synovial fluids of patients with severe destructive osteoarthrosis, mainly of the shoulder joints. Management with NSAID's and local corticosteroid injections is often very helpful. In rare cases the aspiration with a ne

Osteoporosis represents a major public health problem through its association with fragility fractures. The public health burden of osteoporotic fractures will rise in future generations, due in part to an increase in life expectancy. Strontium-based drugs have been shown to increase bone mass in postmenopausal osteoporosis patients and to reduce fracture risk but the molecular mechanisms of the action of these Sr-based drugs are not totally elucidated. The local environment of Sr(2+) cations in biological apatites present in pathological and physiological calcifications in patients without su

The recovery of phosphorus from incinerated sewage sludge ash (SSA) is assumed to be economical. Transformation from non-apatite inorganic phosphorus (NAIP) to apatite phosphorus (AP), which has a higher bioavailability and more extensive industrial applications, was studied at 750-950°C by sewage sludge incineration and model compound incineration with a calcium oxide (CaO) additive. Thermogravimetric differential scanning calorimetry analysis and X-ray diffraction measurements were used to analyze the reactions between NAIP with CaO and crystallized phases in SSA. High temperatures stimulate

A patient with polymyositis of 12 years' duration developed inflammatory polyarthritis confined to the hands and wrists, with erosions and periarticular calcifications. Her joint disease exemplified that of a previously described subset of patients with polymyositis associated arthritis. In this case, calcific material was aspirated from the right long finger proximal interphalangeal joint and the mineral was analyzed and identified as apatite.

Twelve patients, 11 women and one man, aged 66-83, with a distinctive type of destructive arthropathy are described. The principal joints affected were the shoulders (ten) and knees (seven). Clinical features included pain on use, large cool effusions, instability and rapid progression. Radiographs showed attrition of bone and cartilage with a paucity of reparative changes. Synovial fluids were viscous, with low cell counts, and stained positively for the presence of apatite-containing particles. Extensive calcific material was seen in the synovium of the four patients biopsied, and on the rad

Magnesium (Mg) is a conspicuous constituent of hard tissues but its possible role in biomineralization is poorly understood. It is possible that Mg2+ adsorbed onto bioapatites may contribute to the modulation of crystal growth as such inhibitory activity has been reported for synthetic apatites. The present study was undertaken to determine the adsorption isotherms of Mg ions onto synthetic apatites and biominerals in tooth and bone tissues in the presence of other ions of natural occurrence. Synthetic crystals used as adsorbents were hydroxyapatite and, as a better prototype for the biominera

Bone apatite is not hydroxyapatite (HAp), it is carbonate apatite (CO3Ap), which contains 6-9 mass% carbonate in an apatitic structure. The CO3Ap block cannot be fabricated by sintering because of its thermal decomposition at the sintering temperature. Chemically pure (100%) CO3Ap artificial bone was recently fabricated through a dissolution-precipitation reaction in an aqueous solution using a precursor, such as a calcium carbonate block. In this paper, methods of fabricating CO3Ap artificial bone are reviewed along with their clinical and animal results. CO3Ap artificial bone is resorbed by

We describe a 47-year-old woman who developed chronic subluxing arthropathy associated with polymyositis (PM) and positive anti-Jo1 antibodies. After a followup of 3 years, PM did not recur and polyarthritis dominated her clinical picture, leading to deformities and periarticular calcifications in her hands, shoulders, and feet. Patients with myositis, anti-Jo1 antibodies, and periarticular calcifications are at risk of developing deforming arthritis unresponsive to conventional therapy.

Apatites are very important compounds of mineralogical and biological meaning. Apatites originated from the calcium hydroxy compound 3Ca3(PO4)2·Ca(OH)2 and potentially might form three series of isomorphic salts, derived from cationic substitutions in the positions of Ca(I) and Ca(II) ions in the core compound; anionic substitutions of phosphates; and substitutions of anions and very simple chemical entities instead of the hydroxyl group in channel locations. The energies coupled with the ion exchanges inside those three locations were studied using our original method resulting from the trans

The Moon is thought to be depleted relative to the Earth in volatile elements such as H, Cl and the alkalis. Nevertheless, evidence for lunar explosive volcanism has been used to infer that some lunar magmas exsolved a CO-rich and CO(2)-rich vapour phase before or during eruption. Although there is also evidence for other volatile species on glass spherules, until recently there had been no unambiguous reports of indigenous H in lunar rocks. Here we report quantitative ion microprobe measurements of late-stage apatite from lunar basalt 14053 that document concentrations of H, Cl and S that are

Fluoride participates in many aspects of calcium phosphate formation in vivo and has enormous effects on the process and on the nature and properties of formed mineral. The most well-documented effect of fluoride is that this ion substitutes for a column hydroxyl in the apatite structure, giving rise to a reduction of crystal volume and a concomitant increase in structural stability. In the process of enamel mineralization during amelogenesis (a unique model for the cell-mediated formation of well-crystallized carbonatoapatite), free fluoride ions in the fluid phase are supposed to accelerate

A method for identifying particles of crystalline calcium hydroxyapatite in synovial fluids and biopsy material has been developed with high-resolution scanning electron microscopy and an energy-dispersive micro-analytical system. Particles of hydroxyapatite were identified in the joints of six patients diagnosed as having osteoarthritis, three of whom had acute inflammatory episodes with effusions into the joints. Apatite was not identified in joints affected by rheumatoid arthritis and other types of arthropathy. Animal studies showed that hydroxyapatic crystals can cause an acute inflammato

Biomimetic nanocrystalline apatites analogous to bone mineral can be prepared using soft chemistry. Due to their high similarity to bone apatite, as opposed to stoichiometric hydroxyapatite for example, they now represent an appealing class of compounds to produce bioactive ceramics for which drug delivery and ion exchange abilities have been described extensively. However, immersion in aqueous media of dried non-carbonated biomimetic apatite crystals may generate an acidification event, which is often disregarded and not been clarified to-date. Yet, this acidification process could limit thei

Osteoarthritis or 'Joint Failure' is a multi-factorial disease with a final common pathway of cartilage degeneration and bone eburnation. The association of arthritic disease and joint degeneration with the deposition of sodium urate crystals in gout and calcium pyrophosphate crystals in pseudogout (chondrocalcinosis) is clinically well established. Electron microscopy coupled with electron probe analysis has revealed the presence of various other calcium phosphate crystals in joint tissues and fluids. We have found three new morphological types of apatite crystals in human articular cartilage
