An apexification procedure is performed on a maxillary left central incisor tooth of a fourteen years old girl who has chronic apical periodontitis and undergoing active orthodontic treatment. After a one-year clinical and radiological follow-up, formation of apical closure is observed. As a result, apexification can be suggested as a successful treatment procedure in such cases.

Apexification is a widely employed procedure for managing immature permanent teeth with necrotic pulps, utilizing calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)₂) and iodoform combinations for canal disinfection and apical barrier formation. While these medicaments are effective, prolonged placement due to missed follow-up appointments may predispose to intracanal calcification, complicating subsequent canal negotiation and obturation. This case series reports three pediatric patients who presented with pain in mandibular permanent first molars exhibiting immature apices (Cvek's stage 4) and periapical radiolucenc

Three cases are reported in which apexification occurred without the benefit of endodontic treatment. These reports illustrate that immature teeth which are avulsed and replanted, dislocated and repositioned, or traumatized with pulp necrosis supervening, may progress to form complete apices without intracanal therapy. The value of using calcium hydroxide is not in question, but may not be as essential an aid to apical closure as was previously thought. In one case, the appearance of isolated apixes forming, deep in the bone after loss of very immature lateral incisors poses the question of wh

Injury to an immature permanent tooth may result in cessation of dentine deposition and root maturation leaving an open root apex and thin dentinal walls that are prone to fracture. Endodontic treatment is often complicated and protracted with an uncertain prognosis frequently resulting in premature tooth loss. Postnatal stem cells, which are capable of self-renewal, proliferation and differentiation into multiple specialized cell lineages have been isolated and identified within the dental pulp, apical papilla and periodontal ligament. The ability of these cells to produce pulp-dentine and ce

Localized infection in the primary teeth was reported as an etiological factor in the formation of a hypoplastic defect in the underlying permanent teeth. The purpose of this report is to present the case of a 10-year-old girl with an unusual local hypoplasia in the mandibular left permanent canine and emphasize the importance of multidisciplinary management, including combined apexification and orthodontic extrusion. The 12-month recall examination revealed no pathology associated with the rehabilitation, and the patient's esthetic and functional expectations were satisfied.

This review article describes the methods and clinical recommendations for reinforcing traumatized anterior immature teeth with pulp necrosis treated with mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) apexification. Traumatic injury can cause pulp necrosis and incomplete root formation in immature teeth. MTA apexification is the treatment of choice for necrotic immature teeth, particularly during the middle or late stages of root development. MTA apexification has a high success rate; however, failures due to cervical or root fractures occasionally occur. The risk of fracture is higher in immature teeth wi

A case is reported in which an incisor fractured below the alveolar crest 6 months after completion of apexification treatment was surgically extruded for prosthetic coronal restoration. After the surgical procedure, a dowel post was placed in the root canal, a core was built using glass-ionomer cement, and a porcelain veneer crown restoration was completed. The 24-month follow-up examination after surgical, endodontic, and prosthetic treatments showed that the tooth was clinically and radiographically healthy and functioned well.

The completion of root development and closure of the apex occurs up to 3 years after the eruption of the tooth. The treatment of pulpal injury during this period provides a significant challenge for the clinician. The importance of careful case assessment and accurate pulpal diagnosis in the treatment of immature teeth with pulpal injury cannot be overemphasized. The treatment of choice for necrotic teeth is apexification, which is induction of apical closure to produce more favorable conditions for conventional root canal filling. The most commonly advocated medicament is calcium hydroxide,

AIM: This report addresses the management of a large persistent discharging lesion in an 11-year-old boy. The report describes the use of aspiration-irrigation technique for the management of immature necrotic tooth with persistent discharge after a failed regenerative procedure.
BACKGROUND: Regenerative endodontics aim to provide an increase in root canal width, length, and in apical closure. Alternative procedures, such as apexification, should be attempted when regeneration fails. If the canal cannot be dried to persistent discharge, the aspiration-irrigation technique can be used. The tec

Apexification, a well-established endodontic treatment for managing immature permanent teeth with pulp necrosis, aims to create a calcified apical barrier to seal communication with the periapical tissues and allow gutta percha placement. This literature review explores advancements of apexification and introduces a systematic, evidence-based procedure for achieving optimal outcomes for apexification procedures. The discussion compares the materials most commonly used in apexification: calcium hydroxide [Ca(OH)2], mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA), and Biodentine. Compared with Ca(OH)2, contemp

PURPOSE: To evaluate the outcome of apexification using bioceramics in immature permanent teeth, and to study the factors influencing treatment outcome and frequency of spontaneous cervical root fractures.
METHODS: Forty-six children with 51 non-vital permanent incisors treated with a bioceramic apical plug were included. Mean age at pulp necrosis was 9.8 (SD 2.2) years and mean follow-up time was 3.3 (SD 2.4) years. Data were extracted from dental records and included stage of root development, presence of external root resorptions, clinical signs of infection, size of periapical lesion, typ

AIM: To report the induction of apical root development by calcium hydroxide in teeth with pulp necrosis and periapical radiolucency.
SUMMARY: A 10-year-old male patient was admitted to the clinic complaining of an intense pain and oedema on the anterior facial region, compatible with an acute dentoalveolar abscess. There was a previous history of dental trauma; only tooth 11 was negative to pulp sensitivity tests. Radiographically, tooth 11 exhibited incomplete root formation, characterized by a wide root canal, thin and fragile dentinal walls, and an extensive, divergent foraminal opening a

Numerous procedures and materials have been utilized to induce root-end barrier formation. Mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) was introduced to dentistry as a root-end filling material. It has been advocated for filling root canals, repairing perforations, pulp capping, and root-end induction. Mineral trioxide aggregate reacts with tissue fluids to form a hard tissue apical barrier. As a result, MTA shows promise as a valuable material for use in one-visit apexification treatment, primarily for treating immature teeth with necrotic pulps.

We report the endodontic treatment of a non-vital permanent immature tooth in which unexpected complications such as exacerbation of apical periodontitis followed by external root resorption occurred after that the initial stages of the healing process were clinically and radiographically evident. After continued treatment stable repair was obtained.

INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to evaluate the impact of mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA)- and putty-based regenerative and one-step apexification protocols on the fracture strength and failure patterns of immature teeth.
METHODS: Seventy-two extracted human maxillary central incisors were decoronated and prepared to simulate immature root morphology. The samples were randomly divided into 8 groups (n = 10): negative control (sound teeth), positive control (simulated immature teeth with no intervention), full MTA, full putty, apical MTA barrier + warm vertical compaction (WVC), apical putty b

INTRODUCTION: This multicentered cohort study evaluated the radiographic outcomes of regenerative endodontic procedures (REPs) and apexification treatments (APEX) of immature teeth with endodontic disease.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This cohort study included a retrospective record review and prospective data collection of pediatric patients with teeth treated with REPs or APEX between 2005 and 2014. Data including the presence of a periapical lesion, external root resorption, obliteration, apical hard tissue, apical closure, intracanal calcifications, and radiographic root area (RRA) change base
