Conduction aphasia is usually described as a repetition impairment. Semiology or pathophysiology cannot be explained with this definition. We report a single case particularly demonstrative. The patient showed spontaneous speech, denomination, repetition and reading impairments. Main errors were phonemic paraphasia. No arthric disorder nor comprehension impairment was observed. Damage of supramarginalis gyrus and Wernicke's area was found. A cognitive analysis suggested that the phonological buffer and the working memory were impaired. Implication for rehabilitation, which included segmentatio

Different explanations and subtypes of conduction aphasia are analyzed. Characteristics of literal paraphasias in parietal-insular conduction aphasia are discussed, emphasizing that paraphasias in conduction aphasia are articulatory-based (articulatory literal paraphasias) and due mainly to phoneme substitutions and phoneme deletions; they result basically in switches in phoneme manner and place of articulation. Similarities between errors in ideomotor apraxia and conduction aphasia language deficits are presented. It is proposed that language deviations (in oral as in written language) in con

OBJECTIVE: Impairment of speech repetition following injury to the dorsal language stream is a feature of conduction aphasia, a well-described "disconnection syndrome" in adults. The impact of similar lesions sustained in infancy has not been established.
METHODS: We compared language outcomes in term-born individuals with confirmed neonatal stroke (n = 30, age = 7-18 years, left-sided lesions in 21 cases) to matched controls (n = 40). Injury to the dorsal and/or ventral language streams was assessed using T1 - and T2 -weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and diffusion tractography. Lang

Patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) may develop progressive dementia late in their clinical course. Dementia in PD is mostly related to neuropathological findings of extensive Lewy bodies (LBs), with or without the coexistence of Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathology. Aphasia has been reported in patients with LB diseases with AD pathology; however, there have been no reports of typical PD patients developing progressive aphasia during their clinical course. We describe a female PD patient who later developed progressive conduction aphasia characterized by phonemic paraphasia and disturbance i

Conduction aphasia, most often caused by damage to the inferior parietal lobe and arcuate fasciculus, is usually characterized by mildly dysfluent speech with frequent phonemic paraphasic errors, impaired repetition, and impaired word finding and naming, but with relatively spared comprehension. We report an 86-year-old right-handed man with conduction aphasia caused by an infarction that damaged his right temporoparietal region. On testing with the Western Aphasia Battery, however, he named objects almost perfectly. To test his naming ability further, we showed him half the items in the Bosto

We report the case of a woman with primary progressive aphasia (PPA) presenting with conduction aphasia. Neurological findings showed bilateral finger tremor and signe de poignet figé in her right hand. Memory, orientation, and activities of daily living were well preserved. Linguistic examination showed severe impairment in repetition, fluent spontaneous speech with phonemic paraphasia, and relatively well preserved comprehension. Limb-kinetic apraxia and parkinsonism were not observed during the course of her illness. T1-weighted magnetic resonance imaging revealed severe atrophy of the left

A 10-year-old right-handed boy showed conduction aphasia with left-ear verbal extinction (paradoxical ipsilateral ear extinction) after removal of a arteriovenous malformation in the left parietal lobe. Buccofacial and ideomotor apraxia were not observed. Recovery from aphasia was dramatic. Postoperative computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging scans demonstrated damage confined to the left supramarginal gyrus invading the arcuate fasciculus. Together with recently reported cases of acquired fluent aphasia in children with CT-verified left posterior lesions, this case seems to s

We report the case of conduction aphasia due to injury of the right hemisphere of the brain. The patient was a right-handed male in his fifties with moyamoya disease. T2-weighted MRI showed an extensive high intensity area in the right temporal-parietal-occipital lobes. In the case of language-related symptoms, comprehension was preserved, but phonemic paraphasias were frequent, and kana paragraphias were also observed. Despite the extensive injury of the right hemisphere, these language-related symptoms were consistent with the clinical features of conduction aphasia. Therefore, this patient

This study examined temporal parameters of speech in subjects with apraxia of speech, conduction aphasia, and normal speech. They were asked to repeat target words in a carrier phrase 10 times. Acoustic analyses involved measurement of stop gap duration, voice onset time, vowel nucleus duration, and consonant-vowel (CV) duration. Speakers with apraxia of speech had longer and more variable stop gap, vowel, and CV durations than did subjects with aphasia or normal speech. Speakers with conduction aphasia had longer vowel durations and CV durations than subjects with normal speech. Also, subject

UNLABELLED: Background. According to Wernicke-Geschwind model, conduction aphasia following arcuate tract lesion was canonized as primary disorder of repetition in relatively intact speech.
OBJECTIVE: Syndromic analysis of speech and writing disorders in patients with arcuate tract lesion using the method by A.R. Luria and their comparison with well-known types of aphasia.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Clinical and neuropsychological survey was performed in 14 patients with gliomas who underwent surgical treatment at the Burdenko Neurosurgical Center (10 gliomas of the frontal lobe and 4 tumors of t

Phonemic paraphasia, a common characteristic of conduction aphasia, has traditionally been attributed to phonological representation dysfunction. An alternative hypothesis posits that phonemic paraphasia arises from difficulty converting phonemes into their corresponding articulatory maneuvers. However, detailed case studies supporting this theory have been lacking. In this report, we present the case of a 61-year-old right-handed man with right temporo-parietal infarction who exhibited crossed aphasia characterized by typical conduction aphasia symptoms (eg, relatively fluent speech with inta

We identified in two awake surgery cases a postoperative double dissociation between phonological and graphemic output buffer deficits. Using lesion-symptom mapping from ischaemic mini-strokes and preoperative tractography, we demonstrated that the phonological (resp. graphemic) disorder fitted with ventral (resp. dorsal) damage to the AF. Further studies are needed to confirm our hypothesis of a ventro-dorsal functional organization within the AF for phonological versus graphemic processing.

This investigation examined the visuomotor tracking abilities of persons with apraxia of speech (AOS) or conduction aphasia (CA). In addition, tracking performance was correlated with perceptual judgments of speech accuracy. Five individuals with AOS and four with CA served as participants, as well as an equal number of healthy controls matched by age and gender. Participants tracked predictable (sinusoidal) and unpredictable signals using jaw and lip movements transduced with strain gauges. Tracking performance in participants with AOS was poorest for predictable signals, with decreased kinem

We report a 59-year-old woman who presented to our facility with conduction aphasia as an initial symptom which, within 3months, was followed by generalized myoclonus and global aphasia. She had difficulty repeating words during the Korean-Western Aphasia Battery test. Diffusion-weighted MRI demonstrated ribbon-like hyperintensities in the bilateral temporal, parietal and occipital cerebral cortex. An electroencephalogram showed periodic discharges over the bilateral hemispheres, while single photo emission CT revealed diminished perfusion. After a positive finding of the 14-3-3 protein in her

BACKGROUND: Disruption of spoken language in people with aphasia tends to interfere with the ability to write, which is referred to as dysgraphia. This study examined the effectiveness of the anagram and copy treatment (ACT), administered in English on a bilingual Malay/English patient with conduction aphasia (GM). ACT is the arrangement of component letters presented in scrambled order (i.e., an anagram) so that the patient could use the letters to form target words, followed by repeated copying of the word.
METHODS: A single-subject multiple-baseline design was used with sets of English wor

Although there is a substantive body of research about the language used by individuals with aphasia, relatively little is known about their spontaneous iconic gesture. A single case study of LT, an individual with conduction aphasia indicated qualitative differences between the spontaneous iconic gestures produced alongside fluent speech and in tip of the tongue states. The current study examined the iconic gestures produced by another individual with conduction aphasia, WT, and a group of 11 control participants. Comparisons were made between iconic gestures produced alongside normal languag

A 3-year-old, right-handed girl developed a conduction-type aphasia following a second generalized seizure in the setting of a developing abscess involving left subcortical and cortical angular gyrus and arcuate fasciculus, and the posterior corpus callosum. The language disorder was fluent, characterized by age appropriate mean length of utterance and syntax, but with markedly reduced spontaneity of output, rapid rate of speech and mild dysarthria. Comprehension was relatively, but not completely spared. Naming, repetition, and reading (letters) were initially markedly impaired. Improvements

BACKGROUND: Speech and language therapists rarely analyse iconic gesture when assessing a client with aphasia, despite a growing body of research suggesting that language and gesture are part of either the same system or two highly integrated systems. This may be because there has been limited research that has systematically analysed iconic gesture production by people with aphasia.
AIMS: The aim was to determine whether the gesture production of a participant with conduction aphasia was able to provide information about her language system.
METHODS & PROCEDURES: The iconic gestures produce

COVID-19 following infection by SARS-CoV-2 can affect the brain causing confusion, depression, and dementia-like signs. Nonetheless, the presence of more specific neuropsychological signs because of COVID-19 remains unexplored. We report on LA, a patient who was affected by a left-hemisphere ischemic stroke, probably because of SARS-CoV-2. The patient showed a highly specific neuropsychological profile characterized by severe agraphia and some signs of conduction aphasia. All other cognitive and sensorimotor functions remained intact. We sustain that specific neuropsychological signs can be ob

Individuals with conduction aphasia (CA), associated with post-lexical impairments, frequently produce phonological substitution errors. This study examined whether such substitutions reflect phonological simplification principles (e.g., preference for unmarked phonemes, sonority-based tendencies, assimilation) or are mainly constrained by phonological similarity. Under a similarity account, substitutions should preserve key phonological features of the target, even when the result is more complex. We analysed 339 consonant and 98 vowel substitution errors produced by 14 individuals with CA ac
