BACKGROUND: This study investigates the causal relationship between lipid traits and GDM in an effort to better understand the aetiology of GDM.
METHODS: Employing a two-sample Mendelian Randomization (MR) framework, we used Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs) as instrumental variables to examine the impact of lipids and apolipoproteins on GDM. The research comprised univariable and multivariable MR analyses, with a prime focus on individual and combined effects of lipid-related traits. Statistical techniques included the fixed-effect inverse variance weighted (IVW) method and supplementar

OBJECTIVES: To investigate if apoB, apoA-I and apoB/apoA-I ratios are independent risk factors for coronary heart disease and to determine their value in relationship with serum lipid fractions in evaluating the risk of coronary events.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We carried out a comparative observational study on 289 subjects divided into two groups: 144 subjects with old myocardial infarction, and 145 subjects without coronary heart disease, but with cardiovascular risk factors. None of the subjects received lipid-lowering drugs in the previous 3 months.
RESULTS: The mean values of lipid fract

BACKGROUND: Apolipoprotein E (apoE) is present in a variety of biochemically different amyloid deposits, including Alzheimer's disease, systemic amyloidosis and primary cutaneous amyloidosis (PCA). Among the three closely related alleleic forms of apoE, the epsilon4 allele is linked to Alzheimer's disease. Apolipoprotein A-I (apoA-I), another apolipoprotein, is also found in senile plaques of Alzheimer's disease and in amyloid of aortic atherosclerotic plaques. Furthermore, apoA-I has recently been found to be associated with hereditary cutaneous and cardiac amyloidosis.

Apolipoproteins A-I, A-II and E were determined in the plasma of nine patients (five females, four males) with cholestatic liver disease (eight patients with primary biliary cirrhosis and one patient with sclerosing cholangitis). Plasma concentrations were measured by electroimmunoassay in the fasting state, postprandially after ingestion of either 100 g fat as whipping cream or a light mixed meal with or without addition of wheat fibre. Concentrations of apolipoproteins A-I and A-II were low in patients with cholestatic liver disease and A-I levels correlated inversely with the severity of li

Apolipoproteins (apo A-1 and apo B) were measured by rocket immunoelectrophoresis in 53 patients 40-59 years of age with coronary heart disease. Patients with hyperlipoproteinemia and low HDL cholesterol level as well as those with normal lipid levels were compared with age-matched healthy controls. Apo A-1 blood plasma level reduction was found in the former group. The reduction is shown to be due to the decrease of apo A-1 composing HDL3 in type IIa and IIb hyperlipoproteinemia and in normal lipoprotein level. HDL2 apo A-1 reduction is also observed in type IV hyperlipoproteinemia. The rise

INTRODUCTION: Sepsis, a life-threatening condition characterized by dysregulated host immune and metabolic responses to infection, is associated with high mortality, making accurate diagnosis and targeted treatment crucial. Sepsis often induces a notable reduction in serum high-density lipoprotein (HDL) levels. As the fundamental structural and functional components of HDL, apolipoproteins play pivotal roles in mediating the function of HDL. Therefore, these apolipoproteins can serve as potential biomarkers in sepsis.
AREAS COVERED: This review systematically synthesizes current evidence on t

The formation of amyloid and other protein deposits in vivo is synonymous with many pathological conditions such as Alzheimer's disease, Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease and Parkinson's disease. Interestingly, many plasma apolipoproteins are also associated with amyloid deposits, including apolipoprotein (apo) A-I, apoA-II and apoE. Apolipoproteins share a number of structural and conformational properties, namely a large proportion of class A amphipathic alpha-helices and limited conformational stability in the absence of lipid. Other proteins that form amyloid such as alpha-synuclein and serum amyl

BACKGROUND: Retinal arteriosclerosis is a non-invasive indicator for systemic microvascular damage and early atherosclerosis. While traditional lipid measures are used to establish cardiovascular risk predictors, Apolipoprotein B (ApoB), Apolipoprotein A1 (ApoA1), and their ratio might provide more insights into the atherogenic burden. However, their association with retinal arteriosclerosis in general health populations has not yet been explored.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 4,938 adults from a health examination cohort. Retinal arteriosclerosis was evaluated by employing fun

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Fatty liver disease (FLD) is a prevalent condition linked to metabolic disorders and can progress to severe liver diseases. Alterations in apolipoprotein (Apo) levels may provide valuable insights for diagnosing and managing FLD. This systematic review and meta-analysis evaluates these changes across different FLD phenotypes to evaluate their potential as diagnostic biomarkers.
METHODS: We evaluated studies from PubMed, EMBASE, and Scopus using a predefined search string. Predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria were applied, and the risk of bias was assessed using the

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a growing global health burden, strongly associated with cardiovascular disease, the leading cause of mortality in this population. Dyslipidemia is a key metabolic abnormality in CKD, but traditional lipid measures such as total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, and triglycerides often fail to capture the complexity of lipid disturbances in CKD and after kidney transplantation. Apolipoproteins have emerged as more reliable markers of cardiovascular and renal risk. Elevated apolipoprotein B (ApoB), reduced apolipoprotein A1 (ApoA1), and a higher ApoB

Apolipoprotein E (apoE) is one of several lipoprotein transfer genes. A primary function of this protein is the mediation of receptor-mediated lipoprotein removal from the blood. Several studies have demonstrated that genetic variation at the apoE locus is associated with an increased risk of developing atherosclerosis, and recent studies implicate this same genetic variation in determining susceptibility to Alzheimer's disease. An apoE-deficient mouse has been created to further understand the role of apoE in these areas. This review briefly discussed the biological and clinical importance of

BACKGROUND: Bariatric surgery is associated with significant improvements in cardiometabolic health. The apolipoprotein B (ApoB)/apolipoprotein A1 (ApoA1) ratio has been demonstrated to be a strong predictor of cardiovascular disease risk. However, the long-term impact of sleeve gastrectomy (SG) on the ApoB/ApoA1 ratio remains unexplored.
METHODS: Observational study including data from a prospective cohort of patients undergoing SG with ApoA1, ApoB, and ApoB/ApoA1 ratio data at baseline, 1 year, and in the long term (3- to 10 years).
RESULTS: A total of 376 participants with baseline and 1-

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Elevated lipid levels during pregnancy have been shown to be related to the risk of preterm birth. Despite the importance of apolipoprotein (Apo) in lipid metabolism and transportation, evidence regarding apolipoprotein levels during pregnancy and preterm birth is still limited. Therefore, we aim to investigate the associations between maternal ApoA-1, ApoB, ApoB/ApoA-1 ratio and preterm birth.
MATERIALS AND METH: Data were extracted from the information system of Guangdong Women and Children Hospital. Lipoprotein levels were tested using Beckman Coulter AU5800 in mid-pre

Mostly, cardiovascular diseases are blamed for casualties in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients. Customarily, dyslipidemia is probably the most prevalent underlying cause of untimely demise in people suffering from RA as it hastens the expansion of atherosclerosis. The engagement of inflammatory cytokines like tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin-1 (IL-1), interleukin-6 (IL-6), etc., is crucial in the progression and proliferation of both RA and abnormal lipid parameters. Thus, lipid abnormalities should be monitored frequently in patients with both primary and advanced RA stages. An a

Specific serum proteins have been traditionally used in the assessment of protein-energy malnutrition. Some short half-life serum proteins have been related to the appearance of postoperative complications in surgical patients with low-risk pathologies that, far from undernutrition, showed a trend toward overweight and obesity. Apolipoproteins have been proposed as potential tools to assess protein status and nutritional recovery, so we investigated apolipoproteins A-I and B as new tools with prognostic value to detect postoperative complications. We analyzed the interrelation between apolipop

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to investigate the role of serum levels of various apolipoproteins on the risk for type 2 diabetes (T2D).
RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: We used data from 971 individuals from the prospective population-based Rotterdam Study. We studied the association of HDL cholesterol (HDL-C), apoA1, apoCIII, apoD, and apoE as well as the ratios of apolipoproteins with apoA1 with the risk of T2D. All apolipoproteins, ratios, and HDL-C levels were naturally log-transformed to reach normal distribution. First, their cross-sectional associations with fasting glucose and insulin were investig

The effect of prednisone therapy on plasma lipoproteins and apolipoproteins A-I, A-II, and E levels was studied prospectively in a heterogeneous group of six male and six female subjects. All patients were in a good general condition. The patients had normal hepatocellular, renal, and thyroid functions. During the first month of therapy, the following changes were noted: Plasma triglyceride (TG) levels increased slightly in female patients only. In the entire group, plasma cholesterol level increased (17.3% of initial value, P less than 0.01). Plasma high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a common disease with an estimated prevalence of 10-12%. There are pronounced differences between ethnicities with a 3-fold to 4-fold higher lifetime risk for end-stage kidney disease in African Americans compared to European Americans. The purpose of this review was to discuss recent findings on two apolipoproteins (apolipoprotein L1 and A-IV) in the context of kidney disease and kidney function.
RECENT FINDINGS: The observation that certain apolipoprotein L1 risk genotypes that are only present in African Americans might explain a major fra
