Appendiceal neoplasms are identified in 0.9 to 1.4% of appendiceal specimens, and the incidence is increasing. It has long been professed that neuroendocrine tumors (formerly carcinoids) are the most common neoplastic process of the appendix; recent data, however, has suggested a shift in epidemiology. Our intent is to distill the complex into an algorithm, and, in doing so, enable the surgeon to seamlessly maneuver through operative decisions, treatment strategies, and patient counseling. The algorithm for evaluation and treatment is complex, often starts from the nonspecific presenting compl

Endometriosis of the vermiform appendix is an uncommon pathology that may present as an appendiceal mass identified on colonoscopy. This may be due to an appendiceal endometrioma or intussusception of the appendix. Mucinous appendiceal neoplasms and neuroendocrine tumors are important clinical differentials. When there is concern for possible malignancy, resection is recommended, usually as a stapled cecectomy. In this case we describe an appendiceal endometrioma presenting as an appendiceal mass, requiring a right hemicolectomy.

Low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasms may rupture and seed the peritoneum with bland neoplastic mucinous epithelium resulting, when grossly evident, in the well-known process pseudomyxoma peritonei. Appendiceal diverticula may also rupture, resulting in mucin on the appendiceal serosa, which may raise concern for an underlying appendiceal mucinous neoplasm. We report 11 cases of ruptured appendiceal diverticula that were initially either misdiagnosed as appendiceal mucinous neoplasms, raised concern for a neoplasm, or were thought to exhibit localized pseudomyxoma peritonei. Two cases showe

Low grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasms can spread to the peritoneum as pseudomyxoma peritonei even though they are not obviously invasive in the appendix. During the past several decades, several problematic issues surrounding this enigmatic tumor have been debated in the literature, including appropriate nomenclature for the appendiceal tumors and their peritoneal metastases. In this article, the most contentious issues in the area of appendiceal mucinous tumors are examined. First, the classification systems that have been proposed for these tumors are compared in the context of whether th

Low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasms (LAMN) are rare and are diagnosed in at least 0.13% of appendectomies in Germany, although significant underreporting is likely. Perforation of the tumors can result in abdominal mucinous collections, so-called pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP). The challenge in the treatment of LAMN is the adequate approach to the incidental finding of these tumors. If a mucinous neoplasm is preoperatively suspected in cases of an acute condition, usually appendicitis, it must be weighed up whether a conservative approach is justifiable or whether immediate appendectomy is

The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the recent trend of diagnosing appendiceal diseases through the analysis of appendectomy materials, stressing the importance of their pathological examination. A clinicopathological assessment of patients undergoing an appendectomy was conducted, based on the pathological examination of resected appendiceal lesions. Using a pathological database of surgical specimens from patients who underwent an appendectomy between March 2002 and September 2014, a retrospective, single-center analysis was performed. Among the 803 patients identified, 752 with

Appendiceal neuroendocrine neoplasms (ANEN) are mostly discovered coincidentally during appendicectomy and usually have a benign clinical course; thus, appendicectomy alone is considered curative. However, in some cases, a malignant potential is suspected, and therefore additional operations such as completion right hemicolectomy are considered. The existing European Neuroendocrine Tumour Society (ENETS) guidelines provide useful data about epidemiology and prognosis, as well as practical recommendations with regards to the risk factors for a more aggressive disease course and the indications

OBJECTIVE: Appendiceal mucinous neoplasms (AMNs) are a rare and heterogeneous disease for which clinical management is challenging. We aim to review the literature regarding modalities of treatment to guide the management of AMNs.
METHODS AND REVIEW CRITERIA: We conducted a PubMed search in February 2016 for English-language publications, using the terms "appendiceal," "appendix," "carcinoma," "cancer," "mucinous," "treatment," "genes," "target," "genomic," and terms listed in the articles' subheadings. Published reports and abstracts from the American Society of Clinical Oncology meetings we

AIM OF THE STUDY: To analyse the incidence of appendiceal neuroendocrine neoplasms in appendectomy specimens and establish the epidemiological and histopathological features, treatment, and clinical course.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Between 2004 and 2013, 975 patients who underwent appendectomy in Ankara Oncology Education and Research Hospital were retrospectively analysed.
RESULTS: Neuroendocrine neoplasm was detected in the nine of 975 (0.9%) patients. Neuroendocrine neoplasms were diagnosed in eight patients by appendectomy, which was performed because of the prediagnosis of acute appendicit

BACKGROUND: Histopathological examination of appendectomy specimens may reveal malignancies. Based on these results, either appendectomy is sufficient or sometimes a further treatment protocol can be needed. In this study, malignancy-diagnosed cases on appendectomy specimen were examined.
METHODS: Patients who underwent appendectomy between January 2013 and December 2018 with a pre-diagnosis of acute appendicitis were evaluated retrospectively and those cases with malignancy were included in the study. Patients' age, sex, tumor type, tumor diameter, tumor grade, tumor localization, surgical m

Appendiceal neuroendocrine neoplasm (NEN) is the most common adult appendiceal malignant tumor, constituting 16% of gastrointestinal NENs. They are versatile tumors with varying morphology, immunohistochemistry, secretory properties, and cancer genomics. They are slow growing and clinically silent, to begin with, or present with features of nonspecific vague abdominal pain. Most acute presentations are attributed clinically to appendicitis, with most cases detected incidentally on pathology after an appendectomy. Approximately 40% of them present clinically with features of hormonal excess, wh

BACKGROUND: Sessile serrated lesions (SSL) of the appendix are rare appendiceal neoplasms, often identified incidentally on appendix resection and only rarely discovered prior to surgery. This study aims to better characterize appendiceal SSL and their relation to other appendiceal neoplasms.
METHODS: The anatomic pathology database was reviewed for all cases in which the appendix was resected from 2015 to 2023. Cases with a diagnosis of appendiceal sessile serrated lesion were included in the study. Indications for resection and available molecular testing were identified through the electro

BACKGROUND: Non-operative management has been suggested as a therapy for uncomplicated appendicitis. Notwithstanding, the risk of missing an appendiceal tumor must be considered, being the surgical piece crucial to rule out neoplasms. Therefore, we aim to determine the incidence of appendiceal neoplasms in patients with acute appendicitis, tumor types and the importance of the anatomopathological study of the surgical piece.
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective study in which we described patients who underwent emergent appendectomy with histopathological findings of appendiceal neoplasms from January

Mucinous neoplasms of the appendix comprise a group of diagnostically challenging lesions that have generated significant controversy and confusion throughout the years, given their potential for aggressive behavior despite very bland cytologic features. Numerous classification schemes have been proposed to characterize and stage these lesions, but confusion remains among pathologists, surgeons, and oncologists regarding diagnostic criteria, therapeutic implications, and overall prognosis. This review summaries the current recommended nomenclature, histologic characteristics of each entity, an

Appendiceal mucinous neoplasm is a relatively rare disease. It is classified as mucinous adenocarcinoma(MACA)and low- grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm(LAMN). We retrospectively evaluated 16 cases of appendiceal mucinous neoplasm (LAMN: 13 cases, MACA: 3 cases)that were surgically resected in our hospital between January 2010 and July 2021. There were 7 men and 9 women, with a median age of 61 years(27-85 years). The most common chief complaint was abdominal pain(12 patients), while 3 cases were incidental findings following medical checkups for other diseases and without a chief complaint.

Low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasms (LAMNs) are rare and non-invasive tumors of the appendix, and their unexpected discovery during surgery can pose challenges to management. To date, only two cases pertaining to LAMNs without peritoneal spread in pregnancy exist in the literature. Here, we present a literature review of appendiceal mucinous neoplasms and discuss our management and operative approach to a large, incidental appendiceal mucinous neoplasm discovered during an emergency cesarean section of a 38-year-old female.

Mucinous appendiceal neoplasm occurs in less than 1% of appendicectomies. Majority of what is known in the literature is about pseudomyxoma peritonei, which exists as its disseminated form. Pictorial imagery of its pre-disseminated form is rarely observed. We present in a case report form a case of low-grade mucinous neoplasm of the appendix resulting in focal intussusception including images captured from this unique case that will become a learning case for readers of the journal.

AIMS: To research and identify how often complicated diverticular disease of the appendix [appendiceal diverticular disease (ADD)] shows histological mimicry of low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasms (LAMNs) and to provide guidance on the useful histopathological features that allow the appropriate diagnosis to be made.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Seventy-four cases of complicated appendiceal diverticular disease were identified from two specialist centres. Of the second opinion/consultation cases, 71% of the ADD cases had been diagnosed by referring pathologists as LAMNs. Salient pathological fea
