Naming, the formation of stimulus classes, and applied behavior analysis.

The methods used in Sidman's original studies on equivalence classes provide a framework for analyzing functional verbal behavior. Sidman and others have shown how teaching receptive, name-referent matching may produce rudimentary oral reading and word comprehension skills. Eikeseth and Smith (1992) have extended these findings by showing that children with autism may acquire equivalence classes after learning to supply a common oral name to each stimulus in a potential class. A stimulus class analysis suggests ways to examine (a) the problem of programming generalization from teaching situati

Ethical Concerns with Applied Behavior Analysis for Autism Spectrum "Disorder".

This paper has both theoretical and practical ambitions. The theoretical ambitions are to explore what would constitute both effective and ethical treatment of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). However, the practical ambition is perhaps more important: we argue that a dominant form of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), which is widely taken to be far-and-away the best "treatment" for ASD, manifests systematic violations of the fundamental tenets of bioethics. Moreover, the supposed benefits of the treatment not only fail to mitigate these violations, but often exacerbate them. Warnings of the peri

Barriers and Facilitators of Parental Involvement in Applied Behavior Analysis: A Phenomenological Study.

Parental involvement in applied behavior analysis (ABA) interventions for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is essential for treatment success, yet caregiver engagement remains inconsistent across clinical contexts. This qualitative study employs reflexive thematic analysis to explore the lived experiences of eight mothers receiving ABA services through a single South Florida provider. We identified barriers (time constraints, insufficient family support, communication gaps) and facilitators (observed child progress, economic support, intrinsic motivation) to parental involvement. I

A response-restriction analysis of stereotypy in adolescents with mental retardation: implications for applied behavior analysis.

The behavior of 4 adolescents with severe or profound mental retardation was evaluated in the presence of four sets of materials during periods of unstructured leisure activity. Functional engagement with the materials, stereotypic engagement with the materials, stereotypy without interaction with the materials, and other aberrant behaviors were recorded. Across a series of experimental conditions, the number of sets of materials was reduced from four to one by eliminating the set most frequently manipulated in each preceeding condition. In the final condition, four sets of materials were agai

Mapping the Evidence on Compassion Skills in Applied Behavior Analysis: Protocol for Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Applied behavior analysis (ABA) is a scientific approach that applies principles of learning and motivation to assess, design, implement, and evaluate social and environmental modifications to produce meaningful changes in human behavior. It has been widely used in various settings, particularly in the treatment of individuals with autism spectrum disorders and other developmental disabilities. Recently, compassion has emerged as a topic of growing scientific interest within ABA. To improve socially relevant behaviors, it is essential to explore how behavior analysts can provide ma

Applying a Behavioral Fit Analysis with Sexual Minority Youth at Risk for Suicide.

BACKGROUND: Suicide is the second leading cause of death among youth ages 15-24. Sexual minority (SM) youth are at higher risk for suicidal thoughts, behavior, and non-suicidal self- injury than their heterosexual peers. Part of understanding this disparity includes accounting for the role of social drivers of health. The increased risk of suicide and self-harm for SM youth is driven by experiences of minority stress and discrimination that is embedded in society. Recognizing the impact of these factors is essential to inform the delivery of evidence-based interventions for SM youth who are re

A 5-Year Update of Conflicts of Interest in Autism Intervention Research in Applied Behavior Analysis Journals.

Researchers' false, incomplete, or missing disclosures of conflicts of interest (COIs) can introduce bias into research, can erode public trust in research findings, and represent ethical violations of most academic journal policies. A 2020 study discovered that publications in applied behavior analysis (ABA) journals are particularly problematic in adherence to COI disclosure ethics. The current study is a 5-year update of this previously conducted study. We examined autism intervention research articles published over a 1-year period in eight ABA journals. Two coders extracted author names a

A Meta-Analysis of Single-Case Research on Applied Behavior Analytic Interventions for People With Down Syndrome.

This systematic review evaluates single-case research design studies investigating applied behavior analytic (ABA) interventions for people with Down syndrome (DS). One hundred twenty-five studies examining the efficacy of ABA interventions on increasing skills and/or decreasing challenging behaviors met inclusion criteria. The What Works Clearinghouse standards and Risk of Bias in N-of-1 Trials scale were used to analyze methodological characteristics, and Tau-U effect sizes were calculated. Results suggest the use of ABA-based interventions are promising for behavior change in people with DS

Applying classification and regression tree analysis to identify prisoners with high HIV risk behaviors.

Among prisoners, past research has associated several factors with HIV risk behaviors, including illicit drug use, engaging in sex trade, older age (for drug-related risk), younger age (for sex-related risk), low education, low income, type of offense, history of abuse, mental health disorders, vulnerability and low self-perceived efficacy. This study employs data collected through the Transitional Case Management study of the Criminal Justice Drug Abuse Treatment Studies collaborative to analyze characteristics of prisoners who engaged in high-risk behaviors prior to incarceration. Applied behavior analytic intervention for autism in early childhood: meta-analysis, meta-regression and dose-response meta-analysis of multiple outcomes.

A number of clinical trials and single-subject studies have been published measuring the effectiveness of long-term, comprehensive applied behavior analytic (ABA) intervention for young children with autism. However, the overall appreciation of this literature through standardized measures has been hampered by the varying methods, designs, treatment features and quality standards of published studies. In an attempt to fill this gap in the literature, state-of-the-art meta-analytical methods were implemented, including quality assessment, sensitivity analysis, meta-regression, dose-response met

Mental health outcomes associated with applied behavior analysis in a US national sample of privately insured autistic youth.

Applied behavior analysis is a widely used intervention for autistic youth, though its mental health impacts remain under-researched. This study aims to investigate the association between applied behavior analysis therapy and post-traumatic stress disorder, suicidality, mental health hospitalization rates, and length of mental health hospitalizations using a national database of privately insured youth under 18. We matched 17,120 autistic youth who received applied behavior analysis with a control group of autistic youth with no record of applied behavior analysis and clustered them into four

The impact of staff training on special educational needs professionals' attitudes toward and understanding of applied behavior analysis.

BACKGROUND: Research-based evidence points to the efficacy and value of applied behavior analysis (ABA) in meeting the needs of individuals with learning disabilities and autism. Nonetheless, public, government, and professional perception of ABA can be negative. The current study was designed to measure the impact of a short intervention on professionals' attitudes toward, and knowledge of, ABA. METHOD: Teachers and classroom assistants from two separate schools for children with severe learning difficulties completed a self-report survey on knowledge of and attitudes toward ABA. They were t

Behavioral adjustment of siblings of children with autism engaged in applied behavior analysis early intervention programs: the moderating role of social support.

There have been few studies of the impact of intensive home-based early applied behavior analysis (ABA) intervention for children with autism on family functioning. In the present study, behavioral adjustment was explored in 78 siblings of children with autism on ABA programs. First, mothers' ratings of sibling adjustment were compared to a normative sample. There were no reported increases in behavioral adjustment problems in the present sample. Second, regression analyses revealed that social support functioned as a moderator of the impact of autism severity on sibling adjustment rather than

Can virtual reality exposure therapy gains be generalized to real-life? A meta-analysis of studies applying behavioral assessments.

In virtual reality exposure therapy (VRET), patients are exposed to virtual environments that resemble feared real-life situations. The aim of the current study was to assess the extent to which VRET gains can be observed in real-life situations. We conducted a meta-analysis of clinical trials applying VRET to specific phobias and measuring treatment outcome by means of behavioral laboratory tests or recordings of behavioral activities in real-life. Data sources were searches of databases (Medline, PsycInfo, and Cochrane). We included in total 14 clinical trials on specific phobias. Results re

Applying network analysis to psychological comorbidity and health behavior: Depression, PTSD, and sexual risk in sexual minority men with trauma histories.

OBJECTIVE: High rates of depression and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) contribute to sexual risk, particularly in men who have sex with men (MSM) who have experienced childhood sexual abuse. The comorbidity between depression and PTSD and mechanisms by which they contribute to sexual risk in MSM remain unclear. This study sought to demonstrate the feasibility and utility of a network approach to (a) characterize symptom interconnections between depression and PTSD in MSM, (b) identify specific symptoms related to sexual risk behavior, and (c) compare symptom networks across groups at dif
