[Long-term efficiency of vocal aptitude tests and voice training in student teachers].

OBJECTIVE: Teachers are subject to exceptionally high vocal stress throughout their lives and have an increased prevalence of voice disorders. The aim of this study was to evaluate the long-term efficiency of voice training in student teachers during their lifelong career as a teacher. In addition, we investigated the relationship between vocal aptitude tests and teachers' vocal health. METHODS: In a multicentre case-control study, 202 teachers (median age: 48 years, 165 women, 37 men) were examined. The examination consisted of a standardised anamnesis, analysis of the voice, laryngostrobosc

Personality types and performance on aptitude and achievement tests: implications for osteopathic medical education.

CONTEXT: Several studies have shown that the personality types of medical and dental students affect performance on aptitude and achievement examinations. However, such studies are lacking in osteopathic medical literature. OBJECTIVE: To determine if personality type is associated with performance on aptitude and achievement tests taken by osteopathic medical students. METHODS: The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) was used to determine the mental-function pairs-sensing-thinking, intuition-thinking, sensing-feeling, or intuition-feeling-of osteopathic medical students at Midwestern Universi

Has the UK Clinical Aptitude Test improved medical student selection?

OBJECTIVES: In 2006, the United Kingdom Clinical Aptitude Test (UKCAT) was introduced as a new medical school admissions tool. The aim of this cohort study was to determine whether the UKCAT has made any improvements to the way medical students are selected. METHODS: Regression analysis was performed in order to study the ability of previous school type and gender to predict UKCAT, personal statement or interview scores in two cohorts of accepted students. The ability of admissions scores and demographic data to predict performance on knowledge and skills examinations was also studied. RESUL

[Aptitude for sports in children operated on for aortic coarctation. Contribution of the exercise test].

Pronouncing on the fitness of children operated upon for coarctation of the aorta to practise sports, as well as on the nature and level of this activity, depends, to a great extent, upon their blood pressure profile at exercise (BPE) as measured by an exercise test on an ergometric bicycle. We studied thi profile in 43 children aged 11.7 +/- 2.5 years who had undergone surgery for coarctation of the aorta (isolated in 93 p. 100 of the cases) at the age of 3.8 +/- 3.2 years Systolic arterial pressure (SAP) in the upper limbs was normal at rest in 80p. 100 of the children but reached abnormal v

Individual differences in left parietal white matter predict math scores on the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test.

Mathematical skills are of critical importance, both academically and in everyday life. Neuroimaging research has primarily focused on the relationship between mathematical skills and functional brain activity. Comparatively few studies have examined which white matter regions support mathematical abilities. The current study uses diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) to test whether individual differences in white matter predict performance on the math subtest of the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test (PSAT). Grades 10 and 11 PSAT scores were obtained from 30 young adults (ages 17-18) with wide-ra

Predictive validity of the UK clinical aptitude test in the final years of medical school: a prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: The UK Clinical Aptitude Test (UKCAT) was designed to address issues identified with traditional methods of selection. This study aims to examine the predictive validity of the UKCAT and compare this to traditional selection methods in the senior years of medical school. This was a follow-up study of two cohorts of students from two medical schools who had previously taken part in a study examining the predictive validity of the UKCAT in first year. METHODS: The sample consisted of 4th and 5th Year students who commenced their studies at the University of Aberdeen or University of

A Cross-sectional Study of Current Doctors' Performance in a Modified Version of a Medical School Admission Aptitude Test: The UKCAT.

The 2-hour long United Kingdom Clinical Aptitude Test (UKCAT) is used by many universities in the United Kingdom as part of their selection process for undergraduate medical and dentistry degrees. We aimed to compare the performance of senior doctors in primary and secondary care and across a range of specialties, in a modified version of the medical school entrance examination-the mUKCAT. Lay people were also included in the study. Despite its widespread use, this is the first study that examines the performance of senior clinicians in the UKCAT.The study used a prospective cross-sectional de

Predictive power of high school educational attainment and the medical aptitude test for performance during the Bachelor program in human medicine at the University of Bern: a cohort study.

OBJECTIVE: Prior high school educational attainment and medical aptitude tests are two of the most frequently used selection procedures for admission to medical school. Both of these have been shown to correlate with future performance. However, there is a need for further analysis of the combined impact of these two admissions tools and comparison of their predictive value for future performance. At present, successful completion of high school (Matura) and an aptitude test (Eignungstest Medizinstudium Schweiz, EMS; Swiss Aptitude Test in Medicine) are used for admission to all medical school

Do University Clinical Aptitude Test (UCAT) scores predict doctors' performance in UK post-qualification practical clinical examinations? A protocol for an observational retrospective national cohort study.

INTRODUCTION: Internationally, medical schools increasingly use standardised selection assessments to select applicants. The University Clinical Aptitude Test (UCAT) is the most popular standardised medical selection assessment across Europe and Australasia. The UCAT consists of cognitive assessments and a situational judgement test. The UCAT scores have been shown to offer incremental predictive validity for medical school academic attainment: they add predictive value beyond that already provided by prior educational attainment such as secondary school grades. However, the use of standardise

[Examination of automobile driving license eligibility from the viewpoint of drivers apprehended for alcohol infractions].

80 DUI-offenders whose aptitude had been judged insufficient after their first aptitude test, underwent a second, higher level test. They were then interviewed about the conduction of these drivers aptitude tests. The test duration of 1-2 hours was considered to be sufficient. Less than one third of all interviewees thought that an objective judgement of the questioning would not be possible. Exam anxiety occurred only very occasionally during the questioning. Explanations about general problems and about the testing objectives given at the beginning of the tests were said to have been very he

In West and Central Africa one adult in 4 or 5 carries AS trait. This haemoglobin abnormality therefore underlines the question of aptitude of navigation personnel in national or international air-lines. Among these personnel one should separate commercial navigation personnel (CNP) and technical navigation personnel (TNP), if the aptitude in flight of CNP may perhaps be acquired without systematic previous submission to files of Civil Aeronautics Medical Advice, on the other hand a definite and irrefutable decision on the aptitude of TNP can only be envisaged after proving tests for placing t

The effects of multisensory structured language instruction on native language and foreign language aptitude skills of at-risk high school foreign language learners.

Research findings suggest that most students who have foreign language learning problems have language-based difficulties and, in particular, phonological processing problems. Authors of the present study examined pre- and posttest scores on native language and foreign language aptitude tests of three groups of at-risk high school students enrolled in special, self-contained sections of first-year Spanish. Two groups were instructed using a multisensory structured language (MSL) approach. One of the groups was taught in both English and Spanish (MSL/ES), the other only in Spanish (MSL/S). The

The construct validity of HPAT-Ireland for the selection of medical students: unresolved issues and future research implications.

Aptitude tests are widely used in selection. However, despite certain advantages their use remains controversial. This paper aims to critically appraise five sources of evidence for the construct validity of the Health Professions Admission Test (HPAT)-Ireland, an aptitude test used for selecting undergraduate medical students. The objectives are to identify gaps in the evidence, draw comparisons with other aptitude tests and outline future research directions. Our appraisal of the literature found that stakeholder feedback indicates that there is reasonable evidence for test content validity

The validity of learning potential for predicting educational adjustment in preschoolers with Down syndrome: A longitudinal study.

Learning Potential tests aim to assess cognitive functioning using mediation strategies by observing subsequent changes in learning patterns. In this study, this methodology was applied with the Preschool Learning Potential and Abilities Scale and two additional tests, the Kaufman Brief Intelligence Test and the Battery of Aptitudes for School Learning I, to a total of 58 children with Down Syndrome, at four and six years of age. The results demonstrate improvements in general intelligence, learning potential, and school aptitudes between the two timepoints. There was a significant, positive r

Resting-state brain activity can predict target-independent aptitude in fMRI-neurofeedback training.

Neurofeedback (NF) aptitude, which refers to an individual's ability to change brain activity through NF training, has been reported to vary significantly from person to person. The prediction of individual NF aptitudes is critical in clinical applications to screen patients suitable for NF treatment. In the present study, we extracted the resting-state functional brain connectivity (FC) markers of NF aptitude, independent of NF-targeting brain regions. We combined the data from fMRI-NF studies targeting four different brain regions at two independent sites (obtained from 59 healthy adults and

Acquisition of musical skills and abilities in older adults-results of 12 months of music training.

BACKGROUND: Older adults can acquire new skills across different domains. Practicing a musical instrument has been identified as a promising activity for improving cognition, promoting well-being, and inducing brain plasticity in older individuals. However, the mechanisms of these changes are still poorly understood. This study aims to assess musical skill acquisition in musically naïve older adults over one year of practice, focusing on individual factors influencing this process and the relations between musical skills. METHODS: One hundred fifty-six healthy older adults (age = 69.5 years ±

Relating alcohol-induced performance deficits to mental capacity: a suggested methodology.

Performance tests are generally more reliable and more easily administered than on-the-job measures of performance, and in this way are preferable for studying the adverse consequences of environmental stressors. However, a linkage or context would be useful in interpretation of these laboratory measures. This paper reports findings with two indexing methods using multiple regression. In the first study, we illustrate "dose equivalency" where deficits on microcomputer performance tests were related to graded dosages of alcohol, and prediction equations of blood alcohol level were established.

Do study strategies predict academic performance in medical school?

CONTEXT: Study strategies, such as time and study management techniques, seem to be consistently related to achievement even when aptitude is controlled for, but the picture is not entirely clear. As there is limited research in this area, we explored the relative strengths of academic aptitude, as measured by the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT), undergraduate grade point average (UGPA) and study strategies, as measured by the Learning and Study Strategies Inventory (LASSI), in predicting academic performance in 106 students in the first semester of an integrated curriculum. OBJECTIVES:
