Further characteristics of Arcanobacterium pinnipediorum DSM 28752T and Arcanobacterium wilhelmae DSM 102162T, two novel species of genus Arcanobacterium.

The newly described type strains Arcanobacterium pinnipediorum DSM 28752T and Arcanobacterium wilhelmae DSM 102162T, initially isolated from an anal swab of a harbor seal (Sammra et al. Int J Syst Evol Microbiol 65:4539-4543, 2015) and the genital tract of a rhinoceros (Sammra et al. Int J Syst Evol Microbiol 67:2093-2097, 2017), could be further characterized by matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy and by sequencing the genomic targets 16S-23S rDNA intergenic spacer region (ISR) and the

[Pharyngitis produced by Arcanobacterium haemolyticum].

Arcanobacterium haemolyticum (A.h.) was recovered from 0.43% of throat cultures of 3715 patients with sore throat, scarlatina and various skin rash. In a 57.90% patients A.h. was the only bacterial pathogen isolated, while in the remainder beta-haemolytic streptococci, Haemophilus and S. aureus were also detected. beta-haemolytic streptococci were much more frequent than A.h. in the throat cultures (26.83%). All A.h. strains were of the smooth type based on colony morphology and the ability to ferment sucrose. The strains were susceptible to penicillins, cephalosporins, erytromycin and resista

Arcanobacterium haemolyticum and streptococcal pharyngitis.

Arcanobacterium haemolyticum was recovered from 0.5% of throat cultures of 3,922 patients seeking medical attention because of sore throat. Most of the patients positive for A. haemolyticum were 15-25 years old, and had fever (80%), lymphadenopathy (67%), pharyngeal exudate (69%) or skin rash (23%). In this age group, 2% of the throat cultures proved positive for A. haemolyticum. All A. haemolyticum strains were susceptible to penicillin, erythromycin, cephalexin and clindamycin, but resistant to trimethoprim/sulphamethoxazole. In half of the patients with A. haemolyticum it was the only bacte

Arcanobacterium haemolyticum: A case series.

Arcanobacterium haemolyticum formerly known as Corynebacteria haemolyticum is a Gram positive bacilli. It is a fastidious, facultative anerobic, catalase negative, beta haemolytic and non motile bacterium. Gram positive bacilli are usually considered to be non-pathogenic as the majority are part of normal flora of human skin and mucous membranes. Hence, diagnosis of such infection and its treatment may be delayed by a failure of recognition. However, this bacterium has been implicated in wound, superficial and deep-seated soft tissue infections, endocarditis, osteomyelitis, meningitis, pneumon

Arcanobacterium pyogenes and encrusted pyelitis.

AIM: Trueperella pyogenes is known to affect cattle, but was never isolated as a cause of human urinary tract infections. CLINICAL CASE: A 69-year-old male presented for recurring low urinary tract symptoms after a 20-day ciprofloxacin regimen for prostatitis. He previously underwent open right nephrolithotomy and left ureterovesical junction reimplantation for an iatrogenic distal ureteral stricture. Computed tomography showed spontaneous cortical calcifications; renoscopy was performed and deep cultures from the pelvis were taken; culture on chocolate agar revealed T. pyogenes. Intravenous

Arcanobacterium haemolyticum in a badger (Meles meles).

A 7.5-kg female European badger (Meles meles) was submitted under the United Kingdom Government's Wildlife Incident Investigation Scheme to the Thirsk Regional Laboratory of the Animal Health and Veterinary Laboratories Agency. Postmortem examination revealed a large, poorly encapsulated retropharyngeal abscess full of necrotic debris and pus. Arcanobacterium haemolyticum was isolated from the lymph node and confirmed by phenotypic profiling and 16S ribosomal RNA DNA sequencing. Workers should be aware of the potential for badgers to harbor zoonoses other than those more traditionally associat

Comparative Genomics of 42 Arcanobacterium phocae Strains.

For the last 13 years, the fur industry in Europe has suffered from epidemic spouts of a severe necrotizing pyoderma. It affects all species currently farmed for fur and causes animal welfare problems and significant losses to the farmers. The causative agent of this disease was identified as Arcanobacterium phocae. Previously, this bacterium has been isolated from seals and other marine mammals, apparently causing wound and lung infections. Attempts at antibiotic treatment have been unsuccessful and the current advice on preventing the disease is to cull all animals with clinical signs. This

Acute peritonsillar abscess caused by Arcanobacterium haemolyticum.

A patient is reported with a peritonsillar abscess yielding Arcanobacterium haemolyticum. This appears to be only the fifth such case described in the medical literature and the first from Europe. The organism has been reported as an occasional cause of tonsillopharyngitis with rash, resembling infection with Streptococcus pyogenes but often unresponsive to penicillin therapy. A. haemolyticum easily passes unrecognized in bacteriological cultures as a result of its slow growth, coryneform appearance in the Gram's stain and weak haemolytic activity on conventional laboratory media.

Arcanobacterium haemolyticum osteomyelitis and sepsis: a diagnostic conundrum.

BACKGROUND: Arcanobacterium haemolyticum can cause severe systemic infections and sepsis. Thus, accurate and timely identification of the organism is essential. METHODS: Case report and review of the pertinent English-language literature. CASE REPORT: A 74-year-old male underwent repetitive surgical debridement and grafting for a full-thickness ulcer on the plantar surface of the left foot. One week after the last debridement, the patient presented to the emergency department with fever, hypotension, and severe left foot pain. A radiograph showed a soft-tissue defect of the plantar aspect of

Antibody response to Arcanobacterium haemolyticum infection in humans.

Arcanobacterium haemolyticum causes pharyngitis, exanthema, and other infections. The evidence of the pathogenicity of A. haemolyticum depends on clinical descriptions of culture-positive patients and a comparison of carrier rates of patients with pharyngitis and healthy, matched controls. In this investigation, the antibody response of the host was studied for the first time, using SDS-PAGE and Western blot analyses. Paired acute and convalescent sera showed development of antibodies to A. haemolyticum in 7 of 8 patients. The antibodies reacted primarily with four distinct cell wall-associate

Arcanobacterium bialowiezense sp. nov. and Arcanobacterium bonasi sp. nov., isolated from the prepuce of European bison bulls (Bison bonasus) suffering from balanoposthitis, and emended description of the genus Arcanobacterium Collins et al. 1983.

A taxonomic study was performed on 13 bacterial strains isolated from preputial swabs of European bison (Bison bonasus) bulls suffering from balanoposthitis. The isolates were Gram-positive, non-motile, facultatively anaerobic, diphtheroid-shaped cells. Based on biochemical profiles and BOX-PCR-generated genomic fingerprints, the isolates were grouped into two clusters represented by four and nine strains, respectively. Strains 1(W3/01)T and 2(W106/04)T, selected as representatives of the two clusters, shared 97.2 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity. The highest gene sequence similarities foun

[Pharyngitis with necrotising pneumonia caused by Arcanobacterium haemolyticum].

A 20-year-old woman developed symptoms of pharyngitis followed by generalised skin rash and pulmonary infiltrates with cavitation. Arcanobacterium haemolyticum was identified in blood culture, which was susceptible to the antibiotics given. After initiating pathogen-directed therapy, the patient recovered completely. A. haemolyticum is a Gram-positive rod that can grow under aerobic and anaerobic conditions. The pathogen causes a characteristic haemolysis when cultured on human blood agar. A. haemolyticum causes pharyngitis and skin rash, particularly in adolescents. If the infection is not tr

Arcanobacterium haemolyticum and streptococcal pharyngitis in army conscripts.

Arcanobacterium haemolyticum was found in 1.4% and beta-haemolytic streptococci in 23% of throat cultures from army conscripts with sore throat (n = 498). 38% of the beta-haemolytic streptococci were of group A. Patients culture-positive for A. haemolyticum or beta-haemolytic streptococci had pharyngeal exudate, cervical lymphadenopathy and ear ache significantly more often--but cough less often--than culture-negative patients. The pharyngeal colonization rate of healthy conscripts (n = 232) by A. haemolyticum was 0.4% and by beta-haemolytic streptococci, 6.5%.

Arcanobacterium pyogenes endocarditis: a case report and literature review.

We report the case of a 64-year-old man with Arcanobacterium pyogenes endocarditis. The patient presented with dyspnea and asymmetrical progressive quadriparesis. A transthoracic echocardiogram revealed mobile vegetations on both leaflets of his mitral valve measuring 0.5 x 3 cm, thickening of the mitral valve with severe mitral regurgitation due to dehiscence of the papillary muscle to the posterior mitral leaflet. He also had aortic sclerosis with a vegetation measuring 0.5 x 1 cm causing aortic valve dehiscence and free flow aortic regurgitation. An initial hemoculture grew out pleomorphic,

Arcanobacterium hemolyticum orbital cellulitis: a rare but aggressive disease.

The clinical presentation and course of orbital cellulitis in a young adult resulting from Arcanobacterium hemolyticum frontal sinusitis are presented in detail. This case illustrates the importance of a multidisciplinary approach for refractory and aggressive orbital cellulitis. A high level of suspicion for A. hemolyticum must be maintained in such cases, because it has proven to be a rare but aggressive, potentially occult, and life-threatening pathogen.

Systemic and deep-seated infections caused by Arcanobacterium haemolyticum.

Arcanobacterium haemolyticum has been implicated mainly in non-streptococcal pharyngitis and wound infections. Rarely, it has been reported to cause systemic infection, often in combination with other pathogens. Two cases of systemic and deep-seated infections caused by Arcanobacterium haemolyticum are reported, and the literature is reviewed. Sixteen cases of bacteremia and seven cases of non-bacteremic deep-seated have been published previously. Eight of the bacteremic and two of the non-bacteremic cases occurred in younger, apparently healthy immunocompetent patients. Six patients had infec

Arcanobacterium hemolyticum infection: confused with scarlet fever and diphtheria.

Arcanobacterium hemolyticum infections are a common cause of pharyngitis and rash in the 10- to 30-year-old age group. Despite its prevalence, many emergency and primary care physicians may not be aware of the pathogenic potential of this organism. We present a case that illustrates the distinctive clinical spectrum of A. hemolyticum infections that may be confused with drug allergy, group A streptococcal scarlet fever, diphtheria, and even toxic shock syndrome. Recognition of this syndrome will reduce misdiagnoses and facilitate appropriate treatment.

[Fatal sepsis due to an emerging bacteria: Arcanobacterium hemolyticum].

Arcanobacterium hemolyticum (A.haemolyticum) is a gram-positive bacillus. Man is the primary environmental reservoir. It is essentially an opportunistic pathogen in immunocompromised patients and may be responsible for infections of the skin and pharynx in healthy subjects, especially in children and adolescents. It can cause superinfections of chronic ulcers, but occasionally it causes invasive infections. Its isolation from culture samples is always difficult because it simulates many bacteria to which it is often associated in pathological products. There are not recommendations concerning
