Climate change impacts the physiological processes of species, with rising seawater temperatures posing severe existential threats to marine mollusks. Therefore, studying the responses of marine organisms to heat stress is crucial. The blood clam, Anadara granosa, is a marine bivalve species that contains hemoglobin, and individuals with higher hemoglobin concentrations (HCs) exhibit better physiological health. In this study, we analyzed the regulatory mechanisms in the blood clam with different HCs in response to heat stress. Enzyme activity indicates that blood clams with different HC level

Anadara granosa or blood cockles have been reported to be a candidate for biomonitoring agents due to their sedimentary nature and their nutrient uptake mechanisms. Yet, this bivalve is still regarded as a delicacy in Asian cuisine. Malaysia is the largest exporter of this sea product that contaminated cockles may also be experienced by the importing countries. However, the bioaccumulation of microplastics in A. granosa cultivated in Malaysia has not been extensively studied. It is crucial to comprehend the risk posed to humans by consuming A. granosa in their diet. Therefore, the purpose of t

The blood clam Tegilarca granosa is an economically important shellfish in Asia. The complex living environment often exposes the clams to cadmium (Cd) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S). H2S is well-known for its toxic effects, however, it is still unclear whether it can participate in regulating the heavy metal adaptation in clams. Here, we subjected T. granosa to chronic Cd stress (50 μg/L, 14 days) to explore their physiological and molecular response patterns under the addition of 0.2, 0.4, and 0.8 mM H2S. The results indicated that the Cd stress induced the immune-toxicity and neurotoxicity in t

Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is a serious threat to the health of humans around the world. Tegillarca granosa (T. granosa) is considered as an excellent source of iron due to its abundant iron-binding protein hemoglobin. This study aimed to investigate the effects of hemoglobin from T. granosa on the gut microbiota and iron bioavailability in IDA mice. Compared to normal mice, IDA mice showed reduced microbiota diversity and altered relative abundance (reduced Muribaculaceae and increased Bacteroides). After 4 weeks of administration, hemoglobin restored the dysbiosis of the intestinal microbi

Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is a common micronutrient deficiency. Tegillarca granosa (T. granosa) is a good source of iron due to its high content of hemoglobin. The present study aimed to determine the effects of glycosylation on structure, physicochemical characteristics and iron bioavailability of hemoglobin. Using Box-Behnken design and response surface methodology, the optimal conditions for hemoglobin-chitosan glycosylation were obtained: 61.8 °C, pH 6.3, hemoglobin/chitosan mass ratio of 4.3 and reaction time of 15 min. The formation of hemoglobin-chitosan conjugates was verified by SD

The genus Vibrio includes pathogenic bacteria able to cause disease in humans and aquatic organisms, leading to disease outbreaks and significant economic losses in the fishery industry. Despite much work on Vibrio in several marine organisms, no specific studies have been conducted on Anadara tuberculosa. This is a commercially important bivalve species, known as "piangua hembra," along Colombia's Pacific coast. Therefore, this study aimed to identify and characterize the genomes of Vibrio isolates obtained from A. tuberculosa. Bacterial isolates were obtained from 14 A. tuberculosa specimens

Iron deficiency anaemia (IDA) has been receiving worldwide attention. Developing safe and effective iron supplements is of great significance for IDA treatment. Tegillarca granosa (T. granosa), a traditional aquaculture bivalve species in China, is considered to be an excellent source of micronutrients, but the distribution and bioavailability of these minerals have yet to be investigated. The present research was conducted to determine the contents and in vitro enzymatic digestibility of minerals in T. granosa, using beef and wheat flour as reference foods. Meanwhile, two iron-binding protein

The crude extract isolated from the visceral mass of Anadara granosa, an intertidal bivalve mollusc was tested for inhibitory activity against pathogenic bacteria of the shrimp and fish viz. Vibrio harveyi and Staphylococcus aureus respectively by agar well diffusion and contact bioautography methods. Maximum inhibitory activity was shown against V. harveyi by methanol and chloroform (9:1) extract. Twelve fractions (1-12) could be separated from the crude extract through column chromatography. Five out of twelve fractions (7, 8, 9, 10, and 11) showed antibacterial activity and they were furthe

Blood clams (Anadara broughtonii and Tegillarca granosa) are widely consumed in Southeast Asia and can trigger allergic reactions. Whereas tropomyosin and arginine kinase are established allergens, the broader allergen profile and cross-reactivity with shrimp remain poorly defined. Using gel and LC-MS-based proteomics, a novel immunoinformatic approach combining three algorithms and IgE immunoassays, we examined IgE-reactivity in shrimp-sensitized patients. Among 2580 identified proteins, 35 were from blood clams, while 9 were predicted as allergens. From IgE-reactive 2D gel spots, known aller

Clam, a filter-feeding lamellibranch mollusk, is capable to accumulate high levels of trace metals and has therefore become a model for investigation the mechanism of heavy metal toxification. In this study, the effects of cadmium were characterized in the gills of Tegillarca granosa during a 96-hour exposure course using integrated metabolomic and proteomic approaches. Neurotoxicity and disturbances in energy metabolism were implicated according to the metabolic responses after Cd exposure, and eventually affected the osmotic function of gill tissue. Proteomic analysis showed that oxidative s

Characterized by a sessile filter-feeding lifestyle, commercial marine bivalves inhabiting pollution-prone coastal areas may accumulate significant amounts of pollutants, such as antibiotic residues, in their soft tissues and thus pose a potential threat to the health of seafood consumers. Microplastics are another type of emerging pollutant that are prevalent in coastal areas and have been reported to interact with common antibiotics such as enrofloxacin (ENR) and trimethoprim (TMP). Nevertheless, little is known about the impacts of MPs on the accumulation and corresponding food safety risk

The prevalence of pharmaceutical residues like diltiazem in environments raises concerns over their potential threat to non-target organisms. While the immune system poses as a potential target, little is known about the immunotoxicity of diltiazem to aquatic species such as bivalve molluscs. In this study, the binding affinity of diltiazem to the calcium channels of several aquatic species was evaluated by molecular docking. Taking blood clam as a representative, the impacts of diltiazem on Ca2+-homeostasis and immune parameters were also assessed. Our results illustrated diltiazem exhibit a

Oxygen consumption, content of several carbohydrate metabolites, and activities of their coupled enzymes were studied in bivalve molluscs with different tolerance to oxygen deficit: Mytilus galloprovincialis Lam. (black morpha) and Anadara inaequivalvis Br. It has been shown that under conditions of external normoxia the anadara resistance to hypoxia preserves anaerobic orientation of metabolism. Its tissues are distinguished by high activities of malate and lactate dehydrogenases with the decreased content of glucose and the increased level of lactate. In several organs the succinate thiokina

The hemoglobin (Hb) is identified in Tegillarca granosa and its derived peptides have been proved to possess antibacterial activity against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. In this study, we identified a series of novel antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) and artificially mutated AMPs derived from subunits of T. granosa Hbs, among which, a mutant T. granosa hemoglobin peptide (mTgHbP) mTgHbP7, was proved to possess predominant antibacterial activity against three bacteria strains (Vibrio alginolyticus, V. parahaemolyticus and Escherichia coli). Besides, mTgHbP7 was predicted to form α-helic

The family Aporocotylidae is recognized as having the widest intermediate host usage in the Digenea. Currently, intermediate host groups are clearly correlated with definitive host groups; all known life cycles of marine teleost-infecting aporocotylids involve polychaetes, those of freshwater teleost-infecting aporocotylids involve gastropods, and those of chondrichthyan-infecting aporocotylids involve bivalves. Here we report the life cycle for a marine elopomorph-infecting species, Elopicola bristowi Orélis-Ribeiro & Bullard in Orélis-Ribeiro, Halanych, Dang, Bakenhaster, Arias & Bullard, 20
