Molecular epidemiological study of Arctic rabies virus isolates from Greenland and comparison with isolates from throughout the Arctic and Baltic regions.

We report a molecular epidemiological study of rabies in Arctic countries by comparing a panel of novel Greenland isolates to a larger cohort of viral sequences from both Arctic and Baltic regions. Rabies virus isolates originating from wildlife (Arctic/red foxes, raccoon-dogs and reindeer), from domestic animals (dogs/cats) and from two human cases were investigated. The resulting 400 bp N-gene sequences were compared with isolates representing neighbouring Arctic or Baltic countries from North America, the former Soviet Union and Europe. Phylogenetic analysis demonstrated similarities betwee

Amyloid neuropathology in the single Arctic APP transgenic model affects interconnected brain regions.

The Arctic APP mutation (E693G) within the amyloid β (Aβ) domain of amyloid precursor protein (APP) leads to dementia with clinical features similar to Alzheimer's disease (AD), which is believed to be mediated via increased formation of protofibrils. We have generated a transgenic mouse model, TgAPParc, with neuron-specific expression of human amyloid precursor protein with the Arctic mutation (hAPParc), showing mild amyloid pathology with a relatively late onset. Here we performed a detailed analysis of the spatiotemporal progression of neuropathology in homozygous TgAPParc, focusing on intr

[Effects of prophylactic vitamin administration of physical fitness of schoolchildren in the Arctic Regions].

The effectiveness of prophylactic vitamin administration to schoolchildren in the Arctic region was evaluated in the biochemical investigation of schoolchildren by the assay of vitamins C, A, E, B1, B2, B6, B12 and folic acid in their blood serum before and after "Undevitum" intake. Deficiency of a number of vitamins was detected. It was shown that regular consumption of multivitamin "Undevitum" produced a positive effect on the parameters of their physical activity, the highest effect was observed in children with the normotensive reaction to loading, and it was less expressed in those with p

Linking climate and infectious disease trends in the Northern/Arctic Region.

Recognition of climate-sensitive infectious diseases is crucial for mitigating health threats from climate change. Recent studies have reasoned about potential climate sensitivity of diseases in the Northern/Arctic Region, where climate change is particularly pronounced. By linking disease and climate data for this region, we here comprehensively quantify empirical climate-disease relationships. Results show significant relationships of borreliosis, leptospirosis, tick-borne encephalitis (TBE), Puumala virus infection, cryptosporidiosis, and Q fever with climate variables related to temperatur

Trichinella in arctic, subarctic and temperate regions: Greenland, the Scandinavian countries and the Baltic States.

The transmission and occurrence of Trichinella spp according to the zoogeography of different climatic conditions, socioeconomy and human activity are discussed. Comparing arctic, subarctic and temperate regions, it appears that the species of Trichinella present, the composition of the fauna and the human activity are all very important interacting factors affecting epidemiology. In Greenland, where only sylvatic trichinellosis is present, the high prevalence in wildlife appears closely connected with polar bear hunting. In the Scandinavian countries, the prevalence of both sylvatic and domes

Permafrost thaw has enlarged the burned area proportion from naturally-ignited wildfires in Arctic-boreal regions.

Recent studies revealed a simultaneous increase in Arctic-boreal wildfires and permafrost thaw since 2000. Despite the agreement that wildfires accelerate permafrost thaw, it remains unclear whether permafrost thaw makes the landscapes more prone to wildfires. Our study developed a model-based approach to disentangle wildfires ignited naturally and anthropogenically. The historical simulation demonstrates an abrupt increase in the proportion of burned area by naturally-ignited wildfires that occurred around 2010 in the Arctic-boreal regions. The increase in burned area proportion results from

Allergic disease and Staphylococcus aureus carriage in adolescents in the Arctic region of Norway.

BACKGROUND: Allergic diseases are common chronic diseases in children and adolescents, but limited epidemiological data are available during transition into adulthood. Nasal Staphylococcus aureus carriage has been linked to increased prevalence of allergic disease. The objective of this study was to define the prevalence of allergic diseases in adolescents above the Arctic Circle in Northern Norway and to study the associations of S. aureus carriage with allergic diseases. METHODS: A school-based cohort in late adolescence (18-19 years) was invited to participate in a cross-sectional study on

Spatiotemporal patterns and implications of suspended Alexandrium catenella cysts in the Pacific Arctic region.

The persistent presence of a massive accumulation of resting cysts of the toxic dinoflagellate Alexandrium catenella on the Chukchi shelf represents a significant risk to Pacific Arctic ecosystems, as warming conditions are likely to promote harmful algal blooms of this species. While the majority of cysts are found in the benthos, cysts can also be suspended through the water column, allowing them to be transported by currents or to experience elevated temperature and light conditions that may accelerate germination. Spatial patterns of cyst suspension were investigated during a Fall 2020 sur

Characteristics of the Gut Microbiota Composition of the Arctic Zone Residents in the Far Eastern Region.

Background. In many studies over the past decade, scientists have made a connection between the composition of gut microbiota and human health. A number of publications have shown that gut bacteria are involved in many metabolic and physiological processes of the organism. The composition of the gut microbiome is unique for each person and is formed under the influence of various factors associated with both the individual characteristics of the body and the characteristics of the environment. Different regional characteristics make it necessary for the body to adapt to certain conditions, inc

Remotely sensed lake area changes in permafrost regions of the Arctic and the Tibetan Plateau between 1987 and 2017.

Both gradual and abrupt changes in lake surface area in permafrost regions are crucial for understanding the water cycles in cold regions under climate change. However, seasonal changes in lake area in permafrost regions are not available, and their occurrence conditions are still unclear. Based on remotely sensed water body products at a 30 m resolution, this study provides a detailed comparison of lake area changes across seven basins characterized by clear gradients in climatic, topographic and permafrost conditions in the Arctic and Tibetan Plateau between 1987 and 2017. The results show t

The diagnosis and treatment of Helicobacter pylori infection in Arctic regions with a high prevalence of infection: Expert Commentary.

Helicobacter pylori infection is a major cause of peptic ulcer and is also associated with chronic gastritis, mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma, and adenocarcinoma of the stomach. Guidelines have been developed in the United States and Europe (areas with low prevalence) for the diagnosis and management of this infection, including the recommendation to 'test and treat' those with dyspepsia. A group of international experts performed a targeted literature review and formulated an expert opinion for evidenced-based benefits and harms for screening and treatment of H. pylori in hi

Effect of oil pollution on the ecological condition of soils and bottom sediments of the arctic region (Yakutia).

Oil and petroleum products are known to be among the most widespread soil pollutants. The risk of emergencies is sure to increase greatly in conditions of abnormally low temperatures. Oil and oil products are not only toxic to the environment, but can also have a negative impact on the state of the permafrost zone, accelerating the processes of permafrost degradation. The goal of the research was to study the soils and bottom sediments for oil pollution in the Arctic region of Yakutia. The research was carried out with using the complex of geochemical and microbiological methods of analysis. I
