Four species of Korthalsia are found in Thailand: K. flagellaris, K. laciniosa, K. rigida, and K. scortechinii. We present the comparative vegetative morphology, a key to the species, distribution, ecology, preliminary conservation assessments, utilization, and specimens examined. Korthalsia flagellaris is lectotypified here in a second-step. Three Thai Korthalsia species are confined to the peninsular region: K. flagellaris, K. scortechinii and K. rigida. The first, K. flagellaris, is known only from Narathiwat province and is restricted to peat swamp forests. The second, K. scortechinii, is

Cocos nucifera (L.) (Arecaceae) is commonly called the "coconut tree" and is the most naturally widespread fruit plant on Earth. Throughout history, humans have used medicinal plants therapeutically, and minerals, plants, and animals have traditionally been the main sources of drugs. The constituents of C. nucifera have some biological effects, such as antihelminthic, anti-inflammatory, antinociceptive, antioxidant, antifungal, antimicrobial, and antitumor activities. Our objective in the present study was to review the phytochemical profile, pharmacological activities, and toxicology of C. nu

A new species of Lanonia (Arecaceae, Coryphoideae, Livistoninae) from Lao Cai, Vietnam, Lanonia nhatii sp. nov., is described and illustrated, and a new record of Lanonia yangchunensis in Guangxi, China, is described based on morphological comparisons, molecular phylogenetic analysis, and pollen morphology. L. nhatii is distinct from all other congeners by its extremely short costa and purplish-black mature fruit. Additional morphological characters, especially variable leaf forms, were found in L. yangchunensis. Phylogenetic analyses using maximum likelihood (ML) and Bayesian inference (BI) m

Lodoicea maldivica (J.F.Gmel.) Pers. (Arecaceae), 'Coco de Mer', is a palm, growing as endemic in the Seychelles islands. Its fruit weighs up to 20 kg and is characterized by a fleshy and fibrous envelope surrounding the nutlike portion. The present work combines a morpho-anatomical and a phytochemical analysis of the fruit exocarp and mesocarp. The exocarp is composed by a layer of palisade cells. The mesocarp is characterized by vascular bundles and by sclereids. In the aerenchyma, the internal zone of the mesocarp, cells aggregates were positive to phenols, while idioblasts were positive to

Raphia is a genus of palm belonging to the family Arecaceae composed of 22 species. Recent floral treatments of the genus have been published for the Central African region but data on species from the Republic of the Congo is lacking. In addition, it has been suggested in those treatments that more data should be collected in the field to refine the IUCN assessments of Raphia species such as R. matombe and R. rostrata. Taxonomically, species delineations and distribution ranges are still somewhat incompletely known for R. hookeri, R. laurentii, R. monbuttorum and R. sese. Thus, this paper aim

Climate change has negatively impacted food availability and nutritional quality. To address this challenge, it is essential to emphasize species that, despite their longstanding use by indigenous communities, remain underutilized or neglected. Integrating these culturally domesticated species into local food systems offers a promising strategy to improve access to healthy and sustainable foods. One such species is Bactris gasipaes Kunth, whose domesticated variety holds significant but largely untapped nutritional potential. Nevertheless, substantial gaps persist in our understanding of the m

Latania verschaffeltii Lem. (Arecaceae) remains chemically understudied, and investigating its secondary-metabolite profile may provide insights into biochemical diversity while identifying compounds with antimicrobial and antiviral potential. This study evaluated the antibacterial, antifungal, and anti–hepatitis A virus (HAV) activities of the methanolic extract and n-hexane, ethyl acetate, and aqueous fractions, along with catechin and (6 S,9 S)-roseoside isolated from L. verschaffeltii leaves. Ethyl acetate and aqueous fractions showed strong antibacterial activity (inhibition zones 17–44 m

The chemical composition and antimicrobial activity against bacterial and fungal strains related to various diseases of different parts (leaf, fibre and fruit bunch) from waste of date palm (Phoenix dactylifera L.) grown in southern Algeria were studied. HPLC-DAD showed that Quercetin was the most dominant polyphenolic component in all extracts. The antimicrobial activity test shows that leaf waste extract has the highest activity than fibre and fruit bunch waste extracts with inhibitory zone diameter (IZD) of 17.8, 12.1 and 14 mm against Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli and Candida alb

Arecaceae species are renowned in traditional medicine for treating inflammation and liver disorders. Herein, we aimed to identify the phenolic constituents and the hepatoprotective potential of the aqueous methanol extract (AME) of Aiphanes eggersii, Carpoxylon macrospermum, and Jubaeopsis caffra leaves, in a drug-induced liver injury in vivo model. The AMEs are considered safe until the maximum tested dose (5 g/kg). The two selected screening doses, 500 and 1000 mg/kg, displayed antioxidant activity with significant (P < 0.05) decline in the liver/body weight ratios (19.1-29.7%), liver enzym

The pollination of two oil palm species, Elaeis guineensis Jacquin and Elaeis oleifera Cortés (Arecales: Arecaceae), depends on a mutualistic relation with insects, which use male inflorescences as a brood site, and visits female inflorescences lured by the emitted odor, which is similar to that of males. Although the activity of visiting the inflorescences by these insects is critical for the adequate natural pollination of the host plant, their activity is poorly documented. In the present study, we determine the diel activity of two specialized pollinator weevils (Coleoptera: Curculionidae)

Date palm (Phoenix dactylifera L; Arecaceae) is one of a few fruit trees that can remarkably grow in dessert agroecosystems that are characterized by extreme temperature fluctuations. Due to increasing demands for dates in the global market and commercial cultivation in many countries, the tree is currently under extensive research in many countries, particularly to improve the germplasm using different molecular tools. Most molecular techniques largely depend on good quality DNA in significant quantities, which are highly compromised by the presence of various contaminants in DNA. The traditi

The study aimed to evaluate the antithrombotic action of Acrocomia aculeata pulp oil (AAPO) in natura, in an in vitro experimental model. AAPO was obtained by solvent extraction, and its chemical characterization was performed by gas chromatography coupled to a mass spectrometer (GC-MS). In vitro toxicity was evaluated with the Trypan Blue exclusion test and in vivo by the Galleria mellonella model. ADP/epinephrine-induced platelet aggregation after treatment with AAPO (50, 100, 200, 400, and 800 μg/mL) was evaluated by turbidimetry, and coagulation was determined by prothrombin activity time

Understanding how stingless bee species share floral resources is essential for optimizing meliponiculture and supporting pollinator conservation. This study investigated the trophic niche overlap of four Melipona species (M. quadrifasciata, M. bicolor, M. torrida, and M. mondury) in Southern Brazil across warm and cold seasons. Pollen samples were collected monthly over 10 months and analyzed to assess richness, trophic niche breadth, and overlap between species' trophic niches. Results showed seasonal variation in foraging patterns, with all species (except M. mondury) reducing their niche b
