Leprosy: confirmation in the armadillo.

Bacteria isolated from lesions of lepromatoid leprosy in the armadillo were studied in comparison with Mycobacterium leprae isolated directly from human lepromatous leprosy lesions. Three methods were used to show that the bacteria from the lesions of the armadillo were identical to those of the human lesions: (i) extraction of the bacteria with pyridine and subsequent staining with various techniques, (ii) the competence in clearing bacilli (CCB) test, and (iii) the Mitsuda test.

Fleas and lesions in armadillo osteoderms.

Armadillos are bitten by several species of flea. Females of the genus Tunga penetrate the epidermis and when in place are fertilised by males, after which the abdomen swells enormously to form a 'neosome'. Within the penetrans group, T. perforans, makes lesions that perforate the osteoderms within the integument to form ~3 mm diameter cavities occupied by a discoid neosome. We examined these lesions in carapace material from animals which had died in the wild to see whether we could recruit evidence as to how they may be generated, either by the insect or by the host. We studied one species w

Zoonotic parasites infecting free-living armadillos from Brazil.

Armadillos are specialist diggers and their burrows are used to find food, seek shelter and protect their pups. These burrows can also be shared with dozens of vertebrate and invertebrate species and; consequently, their parasites including the zoonotics. The aim of this study was to diagnose the presence of zoonotic parasites in four wild-caught armadillo species from two different Brazilian ecosystems, the Cerrado (Brazilian savanna) and the Pantanal (wetland). The investigated parasites and their correspondent diseases were: Toxoplasma gondii (toxoplasmosis), Trypanosoma cruzi (Chagas disea

Comparative study of Mitsuda reaction to nude mouse and armadillo lepromin preparations using nine-banded armadillos.

In 14 nine-banded armadillos the Mitsuda response to nude mouse-derived lepromin (lepromin-nu/nu) was compared to that of armadillo-derived lepromin (lepromin-A) by injecting the reagents intradermally into either side of the abdomen of the animal and examining the biopsies from the sites after 12 days. The histopathologic responses to both antigens were found to be similar, whether the animal was Mitsuda-negative (lepromatous) or Mitsuda-positive (tuberculoid). It is pointed out that armadillos are good experimental models for leprosy, and their use can replace humans in experimental studies.

Armadillo cranioplasty for expansion and remodeling in craniosynostosis.

UNLABELLED: Craniosynostosis is typically treated in the first year of life, when osteogenic potential is high and residual obligate skull defects heal. Delayed reconstruction can result in persistent skull defects because of diminished osteogenic potential. Adequately expanding the cranium yet minimizing residual skull defects in older patients presents a conundrum. Although secondary cranioplasty can be performed, primary cortical bone coverage is preferred. The authors present a technique of cranial expansion by sliding stairstep osteotomies, thus preventing residual skull defects when trea

Nine-banded armadillo and leprosy research.

In this presentation an attempt has been made to describe the nine-banded armadillo as an animal model, probably the only one in which lepromatous leprosy similar to that found in humans can be experimentally produced. Some unique features of the physiology of the animal are mentioned. The pathology and the microbiology of leprosy in the armadillo are described in detail. The discovery of lepromatous leprosy in the wild armadillos in the southern parts of United States, the transmission of disease among them through trauma and thorn pricks and the pathogenesis of the disease are presented. Immunological characteristics of the armadillo, Dasypus sabanicola.

The immunological responses of the armadillo are of interest because of its susceptibility to generalized lepromatoid infection with Mycobacterium leprae. In this study, specimens of Dasypus sabanicola were found to have a typical mammalian distribution of lymphoid cells in thymus, spleen, lymph nodes and blood. Their complement was active in bactercidal, protozoan immobilization and haemolytic systems. Blood lymphocytes responded to phytohaemagglutinin and to pokeweed mitogen. Sensitization with ovalbumin in CFA resulted in the production of circulating precipitins; strong Arthus reactions we

Uterine adenomyosis in southern three-banded armadillos (Tolypeutes matacus).

Uterine adenomyosis was diagnosed in five southern three-banded armadillos (Tolypeutes matacus) from four different zoological collections in North America between 1995 and 2012. Two cases were diagnosed after ovariohysterectomy and histopathologic evaluation of the uteri, and the remaining cases were identified incidentally at the time of postmortem examination. Animals ranged from 5 to 14 yr of age at the time of diagnosis. Of armadillos diagnosed before postmortem examination, clinical signs included weakness, collapse, anemia, and vulvar discharge. Histopathologic evaluation of the uteri r

Mycobacterium leprae in Nine-Banded Armadillos (Dasypus novemcinctus), Ecuador.

We found Mycobacterium leprae, the most common etiologic agent of Hansen disease or leprosy, in tissues from 9 (18.75%) of 48 nine-banded armadillos (Dasypus novemcinctus) collected across continental Ecuador. Finding evidence of a wildlife reservoir is the first step to recognizing leprosy zoonotic transmission pathway in Ecuador or elsewhere.

Ocular leprosy in nine-banded armadillos following intrastromal inoculation.

Leprosy shows a higher percentage of ocular involvement than any other systemic infection. In humans, the cornea is the first ocular tissue affected. Our previous studies in armadillos with naturally acquired and experimental disseminated leprosy showed that 44% had corneal infection. Mycobacterium leprae is found in armadillo burrows in Louisiana, U.S.A., and ocular abrasions may be the portal of entry for these organisms in wild armadillos. To test the cornea as a route of infection, we injected eight armadillos intrastromally with 2 x 10(6) M. leprae in 1 microliters. Two and 4 months later

The armadillo as a model for peripheral neuropathy in leprosy.

Leprosy (also known as Hansen's Disease) is a chronic infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium leprae that primarily targets the peripheral nervous system; skin, muscle, and other tissues are also affected. Other than humans, nine-banded armadillos (Dasypus novemcinctus) are the only natural hosts of M. leprae, and they are the only laboratory animals that develop extensive neurological involvement with this bacterium. Infection in the armadillo closely recapitulates many of the structural, physiological, and functional aspects of leprosy seen in humans. Armadillos can be useful models of le

Borderline leprosy in an experimentally infected armadillo.

Out of six armadillos infected intravenously with 4.66 x 10(8) M. leprae, one developed a delayed hypersensitivity tissue response with the formation of an epithelioid cell granuloma. It is suggested that, although 80% of armadillos are susceptible to infection with M. leprae, some among these susceptible ones will exhibit varying degrees of delayed hypersensitivity reactions. These animals may go through a borderline phase before ultimately undergoing lepromatous degeneration.

Formation of antibody against Mycobacterium leprae antigen 7 in armadillos.

A radioimmunoassay developed to measure antibody against Mycobacterium leprae antigen 7 in man was applied to the nine-banded armadillo (Dasypus novemcinctus). Normal armadillo sera had low but significant antibody activity in the test. Fourteen of 17 armadillos with systemic mycobacterial infection after inoculation with M. leprae showed increased antibody activity in the assay, and in some instances the activity was higher than in a pool of sera from patients with lepromatous leprosy. Crossed immunoelectrophoresis with armadillo serum in the intermediate gel revealed antibodies against five

Hematologic Parameters of Free-Ranging Screaming Hairy Armadillos (Chaetophractus vellerosus).

Hematologic parameters from free-ranging screaming hairy armadillos, Chaetophractus vellerosus, were determined by hemocytometry and blood smear review. Packed cell volume was higher and basophil and eosinophil counts lower than those reported for this species in captivity. These findings will serve as a reference for future research.
