International review of psychiatry (Abingdon, England)2025eng
Armed conflicts are major global determinants of illness, producing acute and chronic burden across mental health, population wellbeing, and societal stability. Current surveillance highlights high lethality in Myanmar, Sudan, the Palestinian Territories, and the Russia-Ukraine regions, alongside persistent low-intensity violence in Afghanistan, Mexico, and Yemen. Beyond mortality and physical injury, conflicts generate complex psychological, social, and structural sequelae across the life span. Contemporary war psychiatry has expanded from a narrow focus on trauma to an integrated biopsychoso

Study of military-epidemiological importance of typhoid-paratyphoid infections in military operations of XIX and XX centuries. Despite the research progress, and new means of special prevention, the problem has not been solved yet. In wars water becomes an important factor of typhoid spread in the troops and civil population, so water supply should be closely supervised by the civil authorities and military medics.

War refugees and veterans have been known to frequently develop neuropsychiatric conditions including depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and anxiety disorders that tend to leave a long-lasting scar and impact their emotional response system. The shear stress, trauma, and mental breakdown from overnight displacement, family separation, and killing of friends and families cannot be described enough. Victims often require years of mental health support as they struggle with sleep difficulties, recurring memories, anxiety, grief, and anger. Everyone develops their coping mechanism

The situations of armed conflict suppose a handicap for the eradication of the poliomyelitis due to the difficulties to access the susceptible population. In Afghanistan, after the military operation which put an end to the Taliban regime, Spanish military sanitarians made an intervention in order to immunize the children of the zone where they were conducting their mission, against poliomyelitis. After having solved planning and logistic problems, two rounds of vaccination with IPV were made. A local translator helped to fill out a questionnaire about the state of immunization in that zone, p

This paper investigates the hidden yet persistent cost of conflict to birth weight outcomes for 53 developing countries experiencing conflict in the past three decades (1990-2018). Exploiting the variation across districts and conception months-years, we find that intrauterine exposure to armed conflict in the first trimester of pregnancy reduces child's weight at birth by 2.8% and raises the incidence of low birth weight by 3.2 percentage points. Infants born to poor and low educated mothers are especially vulnerable to the adverse repercussions of armed conflict. Given the long-lasting conse

Sexual violence against women in armed conflicts has become a weapon with various strategic purposes. It is used as a tool to humiliate and demoralise the enemy, as well as to exert territorial control and "ethnic cleansing." Not only seeks the individual suffering but also destroys the social fabric of her community. This study aims to analyze the psychosocial impact of sexual violence experienced by women during armed conflicts, focusing on its effects on mental health and social relationships. Adhering to Preferred Reported Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses 2020 guidelines, we

INTRODUCTION: Armed conflict is increasing globally and is dramatically disrupting surgical care more than ever before. To address this, the PIPESS (Personnel, Infrastructure, Procedures, Equipment, Supplies, and Standard) tool was designed to facilitate assessment of hospital capacity. It assesses 6 key categories at 3 timepoints: preconflict, during conflict, and postconflict. This tool was piloted to assess the impact of conflict and COVID-19 on surgical care delivery at the Buea Regional Hospital in Cameroon.
METHODS: This was a cross-sectional, qualitative study combining in-depth interv

BACKGROUND: Rape is the most common act of violence against women during wartime which is considered interpersonal, social and political violence because survivors usually suffer from stigma and discrimination in the community. Sexual violence is a serious threat to women's health. The psychological and medical consequences of rape during the conflict period are not well documented. Therefore, this study investigated the psychological and medical consequences of rape among survivor in the northern Ethiopia conflict, which occurred since 2020-2022.

The objective of the present study was to estimate the magnitude and the structure of ENT losses in modern local armed conflicts. We have considered characteristics of battle injuries inflicted in modern wars based on the materials collected during the armed conflicts in the Caucasus during 1999-2002 and stored in the Military Medical Museum (MMM) of the Russian Defense Ministry. A total of 5608 case records of the surgical treatment of mechanical injuries were analysed including 4002 gunshot wounds and 1606 closed injuries (contusions). ENT and neck wounds were the main and concomitant injuri

Wars and armed conflicts are widely recognised as a threat to health systems, yet the destruction of medical education is still too often treated as a secondary educational disruption. This opinion article argues that attacks on medical schools, teaching hospitals, clinical placements, accreditation systems and faculty pipelines should be understood as a distinct form of long-term public health harm. I propose the term "meducide" to describe the systematic destruction, dismantling or incapacitation of medical education during war, whether by direct attack or by structural conditions that rende

Chronic pain is a common squealae of military- and terror-related injuries. While its pathophysiology has not yet been fully elucidated, it may be potentially related to premorbid neuropsychobiological status, as well as to the type of injury and to the neural alterations that it may evoke. Accordingly, optimized approaches for wounded individuals should integrate primary, secondary and tertiary prevention in the form of thorough evaluation of risk factors along with specific interventions to contravene and mitigate the ensuing chronicity. Thus, Premorbid Events phase may encompass assessments

Armed conflicts often significantly exacerbate the magnitude and severity of malnutrition by increasing food insecurity. Evidence shows that malnutrition is among the leading causes of morbidity and mortality among children during conflicts. This study examines the impact of the armed conflicts in Northern Nigeria on nutritional status of children under the age of five. Three waves (2008, 2013, and 2018) of individual-level birth records data from the Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey (NDHS) dataset are spatially merged with information on conflict events drawn from the Armed Conflict Loca

Introduction: Armed conflicts affect the mental health of children and adolescents. Their outcomes in these populations have been documented identifying vulnerability and significant biopsychosocial damage as the most common factors. Objective: To identify and synthesize the mental health consequences of armed conflicts in children and adolescents. Materials and methods: We carried out a comprehensive and systematic search of reviews published until July 2019 in the MEDLINE (Ovid), EMBASE, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, and LILACS databases, as well as in additional sources. STUDY QUESTION: What are the clinical and logistical predictors of sperm viability in posthumous sperm retrieval (PHSR), and how do post-mortem interval (PMI), body refrigeration, and mechanism of death affect outcomes?
SUMMARY ANSWER: Shorter PMI and body refrigeration significantly enhance post-mortem sperm viability, with the mechanism of death modulating viability patterns in a time-dependent manner.
WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: PHSR has gained increasing prominence in reproductive medicine, yet technical aspects remain under-researched. Key questions regarding optimal timing, storage conditio

The treatment of psychotrauma is based on two main aspects, pharmacological and psychotherapeutic, in accordance with national and international recommendations on psychotherapy, which recommend the use of different techniques, depending on the time frame of the psychotraumatic event or events. The principles of psychological support are based on three phases: immediate, post-medical and long-term. Therapeutic patient education brings added value to the psychological care of psychotraumatized people.
