Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) of Endophytic Fungi Growing on Extracts of the Host, Horseradish (Armoracia rusticana).

The interaction between plant defensive metabolites and different plant-associated fungal species is of high interest to many disciplines. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are natural products that are easily evaporated under ambient conditions. They play a very important role in inter-species communication of microbes and their hosts. In this study, the VOCs produced by 43 different fungal isolates of endophytic and soil fungi during growth on horseradish root (Armoracia rusticana) extract or malt extract agar were examined, by using headspace-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (headspace-

Differential effectiveness of salicylate-dependent and jasmonate/ethylene-dependent induced resistance in Arabidopsis.

Salicylic acid (SA), jasmonic acid (JA), and ethylene (ET) are each involved in the regulation of basal resistance against different pathogens. These three signals play important roles in induced resistance as well. SA is a key regulator of pathogen-induced systemic acquired resistance (SAR), whereas JA and ET are required for rhizobacteria-mediated induced systemic resistance (ISR). Both types of induced resistance are effective against a broad spectrum of pathogens. In this study, we compared the spectrum of effectiveness of SAR and ISR using an oomycete, a fungal, a bacterial, and a viral p

Herbivore-induced resistance against microbial pathogens in Arabidopsis.

Caterpillars of the herbivore Pieris rapae stimulate the production of jasmonic acid (JA) and ethylene (ET) in Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) and trigger a defense response that affects insect performance on systemic tissues. To investigate the spectrum of effectiveness of P. rapae-induced resistance, we examined the level of resistance against different pathogens. Although the necrotrophic fungus Alternaria brassicicola is sensitive to JA-dependent defenses, herbivore-induced resistance was not effective against this pathogen. By contrast, caterpillar feeding significantly reduced disease

An ultrasensitive hydrogen peroxide biosensor based on electrocatalytic synergy of graphene-gold nanocomposite, CdTe-CdS core-shell quantum dots and gold nanoparticles.

We first reported an ultrasensitive hydrogen peroxide biosensor in this work. The biosensor was fabricated by coating graphene-gold nanocomposite (G-AuNP), CdTe-CdS core-shell quantum dots (CdTe-CdS), gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) and horseradish peroxidase (HRP) in sequence on the surface of gold electrode (GE). Cyclic voltammetry and differential pulse voltammetry were used to investigate electrochemical performances of the biosensor. Since promising electrocatalytic synergy of G-AuNP, CdTe-CdS and AuNPs towards hydrogen peroxide was achieved, the biosensor displayed a high sensitivity, low det

Production of a conjugate between the rK346 antigen from Leishmania infantum and the horseradish peroxidase C for the detection of rK346 antibodies.

It was designed and characterized a reporter system to be captured by an- tibodies bound to ELISA plates. The system was designed with the rK346 from Leishmania infantum, a highly antigenic and specific protein. The rK346 was coupled to the horseradish peroxidase C (HRPc) from Armoracia rusticana using glutaraldehyde or sulfo-SMCC. Gluta- raldehyde conjugation was performed in two steps. Separation of conjugates was carried out using a Sepharose S-200 in size exclusion chromatography (SEC); fractions were analyzed via HRPc activity and through ELISA plates sensitized with polyclonal anti-rK346

InP/ZnS quantum dot-based fluorescent probe for directly sensitive and selective detection of horseradish peroxidase.

InP/ZnS quantum dot (QD)-based fluorescent probe for directly sensitive and selective detection of horseradish peroxidase (HRP) was reported herein. Fluorescence of InP/ZnS QDs was statically quenched by HRP, due to the ground state complex formation of InP/ZnS QDs with HRP. Such ground state complex formation between InP/ZnS QDs and HRP reduced both the α-helix content and the melting temperature of HRP. Several key factors including InP/ZnS QDs concentration, buffer pH value, ionic strength, reaction temperature, and reaction time those affected the analytical performance of InP/ZnS QDs in H

Superoxide reaction with tyrosyl radicals generates para-hydroperoxy and para-hydroxy derivatives of tyrosine.

Tyrosine-derived hydroperoxides are formed in peptides and proteins exposed to enzymatic or cellular sources of superoxide and oxidizing species as a result of the nearly diffusion-limited reaction between tyrosyl radical and superoxide. However, the structure of these products, which informs their reactivity in biology, has not been unequivocally established. We report here the complete characterization of the products formed in the addition of superoxide, generated from xanthine oxidase, to several peptide-derived tyrosyl radicals, formed from horseradish peroxidase. RP-HPLC, LC-MS, and NMR

A feasible image-based colorimetric assay using a smartphone RGB camera for point-of-care monitoring of diabetes.

Urinary glucose determination using a glucose test strip is simple and convenient in daily self-monitoring of diabetes. However, diabetic patients exhibit acquired impaired color vision (ICV), which results in the inability to discriminate between hues. Even with the assistance of a color chart, it is still not easy for these patients to read the urinary glucose results with the naked eye. In this study, a smartphone camera using an image-based colorimetric detection method was successfully developed for quantitative analysis of urine glucose. Effects of a Prophylactic Treatment with Horseradish Root and Nasturtium Herb on Urinary Tract Infections in Individuals with Chronic Neurogenic Lower Urinary Tract Dysfunction: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

INTRODUCTION: Recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs) are common in individuals with neurogenic lower urinary tract dysfunction (NLUTD) and greatly affect their quality of life. There is currently no established prophylactic measure based on evidence. We have therefore evaluated the effects of a horseradish root and nasturtium herb product on the frequency of UTIs in a retrospective cohort. METHODS: Clinical data of patients with chronic NLUTD who were receiving the phytotherapeuticum for at least 12 months were analyzed. The number of UTIs was categorized as no UTIs, sporadic UTIs (1-2/yea

Simultaneous detection of carcinoembryonic antigen and neuron-specific enolase in human serum based on time-resolved chemiluminescence immunoassay.

In the clinical diagnosis of tumor, the immunological detection of single tumor markers may lead to errors and missed inspection. Therefore, it is necessary to establish an accurate and effective method for the simultaneous detection of multiple tumor markers. Thus, we developed a time-resolved chemiluminescence immunoassay (TRCLIA) to simultaneously detect carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) and neuron-specific enolase (NSE) in human serum. Horseradish peroxidase (HRP) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) were used as the detection probes to label the monoclonal antibodies of CEA and NSE by strain-promo

Rationally engineered high-performance BiVO4/Ag3VO4/SnS2 photoelectrodes for ultrasensitive immunosensing of CYFRA21-1 based on HRP-tyramine-triggered insoluble precipitates.

A photoelectrochemical (PEC) biosensor capable of detecting cytokeratin 19 fragment 21-1 (CYFRA21-1) was optimized by taking advantage of the powerful conjugate repeats of horseradish peroxidase and tyramine (HRP-tyramine)-triggered enzymatic biocatalytic precipitation (BCP) on high-performance BiVO4/Ag3VO4/SnS2 photoelectrodes. Compared with the ubiquitous BCP strategy, we identified a design supporting conjugate repeats generated by HRP and tyramine-triggered immeasurable insoluble precipitates in the presence of hydrogen peroxide and 4-chloro-1-phenol (4-CN), and the steric hindrance improv

In vivo prophylactic activity of QR-435 against H3N2 influenza virus infection.

BACKGROUND: Prophylaxis against influenza infection can take several forms, none of which is totally effective at preventing the spread of the disease. QR-435, an all-natural compound of green-tea extract and other agents, has been developed to protect against a range of viral infections, including the influenza subtype H3N2. METHODS: Several different QR-435 formulations were tested against the two influenza A H3N2 viruses (A/Sydney/5/97 and A/Panama/2007/99) in the ferret model.
