Nonhatching Decapsulated Artemia Cysts As a Replacement to Artemia Nauplii in Juvenile and Adult Zebrafish Culture.

Feeding Artemia nauplii as the main nutrition source for zebrafish is a common practice for many research facilities. Culturing live feed can be time-consuming and requires additional equipment to be purchased, maintained, and cleaned. Nonhatching decapsulated Artemia cysts (decaps) are a commercially available product that can be fed directly to fish. Several other ornamental fish species have been successfully cultured using decaps. Replacing Artemia nauplii with decaps could reduce the overall time and costs associated with the operation of a zebrafish facility. The objective of this study

Interference of Cadmium with the Early Development of Artemia salina.

Cadmium is a common contaminant of both saline and freshwater environments. It has no biological function but readily penetrates tissues, causing significant oxidative stress and consequent damage throughout the organism. In this work, we examined the effects of this metal on the nauplii of Artemia salina, a model for testing toxicity in larval zooplanktonic species, and to evaluate the impact of contaminants on natural populations. An environmentally realistic concentration (15 µg/L) and two higher concentrations (150 and 1500 µg/L) were used. The presence of metals in culture media and naupl

Helminth diversity in brine shrimps (Artemia) from Ukraine.

Brine shrimps (Artemia spp.) are aquatic crustaceans known as important intermediate hosts for a wide range of helminth species. From 2011 to 2021, 4,347 individuals of brine shrimp were collected for this study, investigating the diversity and infection rates of helminth species in Artemia spp. from hypersaline waters in southern and eastern Ukraine. Seven helminth species were found: six cestodes (Anomotaenia tringae, Eurycestus avoceti, Branchiopodataenia gvozdevi, Confluaria podicipina, Fimbriarioides tadornae, Hymenolepis s.l. stellorae) and one unidentified acuariid nematode (Acuariidae

Toxicological effects of microplastics and sulfadiazine on Artemia sinica.

Sulfadiazine (SDZ) is a widely used antibiotic that raises significant environmental concerns. Despite the role of microplastics (MPs) in facilitating the adsorption of environmental organic pollutants and influencing their toxicity to organisms, further research is necessary to understand the combined and individual effects of PS and SDZ on Artemia sinica. This study conducted experiments with varying concentrations of SDZ (0.16 mg/L, 0.8 mg/L, 4 mg/L, and 20 mg/L) both individual and combination treatments with 4 mg/L of PS to elucidate the potential toxic mechanisms. The results showed that

Why join groups? Lessons from parasite-manipulated Artemia.

Grouping behaviours (e.g. schooling, shoaling and swarming) are commonly explicated through adaptive hypotheses such as protection against predation, access to mates or improved foraging. However, the hypothesis that aggregation can result from manipulation by parasites to increase their transmission has never been demonstrated. We investigated this hypothesis using natural populations of two crustacean hosts (Artemia franciscana and Artemia parthenogenetica) infected with one cestode and two microsporidian parasites. We found that swarming propensity increased in cestode-infected hosts and th

Artemia salina: A microcrustacean to assess engineered nanoparticles toxicity.

The focus of this work was to investigate the toxicity of different metal nanoparticles (gold nanoparticles [AuNPs], silver nanoparticles [AgNPs], titanium dioxide nanoparticles [TiO2 NPs]) on brine shrimp Artemia salina. We investigated if nanoparticles could have an influence on hatching of cysts and on mortality of larvae. Larvae (also called nauplii) and cysts were exposed to NPs for 24 hr in artificial seawater on microplates. At the end of the test, we assessed the endpoint (immobility/death) for the larvae by a stereomicroscope. Nauplii that appeared completely motionless, were counted

Artemia is capable of spreading oocysts of Cryptosporidium and the cysts of Giardia.

The capability for ingesting and spreading the fixed oocysts of Cryptosporidium and fixed cysts of Giardia, two waterborne protozoan parasites, by Artemia franciscana, a microcrustacean widely used as live diet in fish and shellfish larviculture, was demonstrated using differential interference contrast and immunofluorescence microscopy. Our findings suggest the possibility that this microcrustacean could serve as a disseminating vehicle of both parasites in aquatic environments.

Differential permeation of Artemia cysts and cucumber seeds by alcohols.

The rate of penetration of the simpler alcohols into brine shrimp cysts and cucumber seeds was studied. In solutions below 70% the rate of penetration is related to lipid solvent capacity of the alcohol. In concentrations above 70%, particularly in absolute alcohols, methanol penetrates brine shrimp rapidly and ethanol penetrates slowly. All the other alcohols tested did not pepetrate the dormant structures. Ethionine and deuteroxy-methanol did not affect the rate of penetration of methanol. It is suggested that in dehydrated membranes the lipid moiety is protected by a continuous sheet of pro

Iron metallodrugs: stability, redox activity and toxicity against Artemia salina.

Iron metallodrugs comprise mineral supplements, anti-hypertensive agents and, more recently, magnetic nanomaterials, with both therapeutic and diagnostic roles. As biologically-active metal compounds, concern has been raised regarding the impact of these compounds when emitted to the environment and associated ecotoxicological effects for the fauna. In this work we assessed the relative stability of several iron compounds (supplements based on glucoheptonate, dextran or glycinate, as well as 3,5,5-trimethylhexanoyl (TMH) derivatives of ferrocene) against high affinity models of biological bind

Brine shrimp (Artemia salina) nauplii as a teratogen test system.

Brine shrimp increase in length rapidly after hatching. A teratogen test system is based on disruption of elongation between 24 and 48 hr after wetting of the cysts. Teratogenicity of substances dissolved in the medium is assayed by comparison of average lengths of animals raised for the test period in suspect solution with average lengths of controls. The system is fast, inexpensive, and requires little skill. Brine shrimp are suited to testing industrial wastes, chemical formulations, drugs, and food additives that can be dissolved in water at 25 degrees C. The method appears unsuited to tes

Actin gene structure in two Artemia species, A. franciscana and A. parthenogenetica.

Genomic clones coding for actin have been isolated from two species of the crustacean Artemia, A. parthenogenetica and A. franciscana. The Act211 isoform gene was isolated from A. parthenogenetica, and the two other isoform genes, Act302 and Act403, were isolated from A. franciscana. The comparison of the nucleotide sequence of genomic and cDNA clones showed an interspecific divergence of 4% in translated and 6.1% in untranslated regions. However, the establishment of the partial structure of the Act211 gene in A. franciscana and of the Act302 gene in A. parthenogenetica suggests their similar

Artemia salina as a test organism for measuring superoxide-mediated toxicity.

The purpose of this study was to examine the possibility of using Artemia salina as a test organism in the search for compounds having the ability to protect against superoxide-mediated toxicity. The basic procedure for the assay using Artemia salina was performed as described in previous literature, with minor modifications. We found that Artemia salina are extremely sensitive to menadione bisulfite, a compound whose toxicity is probably mediated by intracellular superoxide generation. Desferrioxamine (desferal), a compound with known protective effects, was shown to display dramatic protecti

Grazing the plastisphere: Trophic transfer of the bioaccumulated metals to Artemia salina.

In any aquatic environment, microplastics (MPs) are rapidly colonized by microbial communities, forming a biofilm known as plastisphere, which modifies their surface properties. The biofilm has been shown to dramatically increase metal accumulation. Yet, the impact of biofilm community structure on the level of the metallic load remains poorly understood, especially the role of seawater nutrients. In addition, contaminants bioaccumulation raises the question of the grazing (or ingestion) of biofouled MPs by higher trophic level. To address this issue, the development and growth of the plastisp

Impact of Benzodiazepine Delorazepam on Growth and Behaviour of Artemia salina Nauplii.

Benzodiazepines, a significant group of newly recognised water contaminants, are psychotropic medications prescribed for common anxiety symptoms and sleep disorders. They resist efficient degradation during sewage treatment and endure in aquatic environments. Their presence in aquatic matrices is increasing, particularly after the recent pandemic period, which has led many people to systematically use benzodiazepines to manage anxiety. In previous studies, an important interference of this class of drugs on both the larval and adult stages of some aquatic species has been demonstrated, with ef

Physiological and histological effects of cadmium, lead, and combined on Artemia franciscana.

This study analyzed the effects of cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) on growth, sexual couples, and histological structures of Artemia franciscana exposed to individual concentrations of these metals and combined. No histological effects were observed at tissue level in digestive, respiratory, nervous, and reproductive systems (i.e., necrosis, loss of regular structure) in individual and mixed applications on A. franciscana for 20 days of exposure. No significant differences (p > 0.05) were determined in final size and growth rate among the organisms exposed to Cd and those of control. For Pb, only t

Monitoring the Effect of Metal Ions on the Mobility of Artemia salina Nauplii.

This study aims to measure the effect of toxic aqueous solutions of metals on the mobility of Artemia salina nauplii by using digital image processing. The instrument consists of a camera with a macro lens, a dark chamber, a light source and a laptop computer. Four nauplii were inserted into a macro cuvette, which contained copper, cadmium, iron and zinc ions at various concentrations. The nauplii were then filmed inside the dark chamber for two minutes and the video sequence was processed by a motion tracking algorithm that estimated their mobility. The results obtained by this system were co

The influence of predation on the chronic response of Artemia sp. populations to a toxicant.

Environmental risk assessment of contaminants is conventionally based on toxic effects assessed in organism-level test systems. We suggest that, for the prediction of toxicant effects, population- and community-level effects should be considered. The aim of this study was to investigate how predation could alter a prey population's response to a toxicant to reveal effects at population and community levels.Populations of the brine shrimp Artemia sp. were maintained in the laboratory with and without simulated predation. Individuals were exposed for 1 h to the pyrethroid insecticide esfenvalera

Toxicity of organic mercury compounds to the developing brine shrimp, Artemia.

Mercury can be coupled to a wide variety of organic compounds but there is limited information concerning the influence of such substitutions on the toxicity of mercury within the marine environment. We therefore determined the effects of six organomercuries on the emergence and hatching of the brine shrimp, Artemia. The relative toxicities of the organic mercuries were unaffected by the ability of the compounds to ionize, whereas the sizes of the compounds appeared to be important. Thus, brine shrimp were equally sensitive to five of the organic mercuries while diphenylmercury, the largest of

Comparison of the effect of Mospilan SP and its active substance on Artemia franciscana.

Contaminants formed after the use of pesticides raise concerns for human health and aquatic ecosystems, i. a., due to their high persistence in surface waters and their further migration to other components of the environment. In our study, we compared the effect of the insecticide Mospilan SP and its active substance acetamiprid on the aquatic crustacean Artemia franciscana. The concentration was 367.44 mg/l for Mospilan SP LC50 after 120 h, and 102.82 mg/l after 144 hours. The concentration was 148.04 mg/l for the active substance acetamiprid LC20 after 144 h and 28.84 mg/l after 168 hours.
