Temporomandibular joint internal disorders commonly present with limited mouth opening and pain. Treatment options range from invasive surgical procedures to minimally invasive interventions. This technical note aims to introduce a modification to the arthrocentesis technique in which a pressure infusion cuff (VBM Classic Infusor, Medizintechnik GmbH, Germany) is used for irrigation instead of syringes or peristaltic pumps. A pressure infusion cuff (bag) is an inflatable bag with a hand pump and a sphygmomanometer that allows monitorization of the pressure, and it is intended to apply pressure

Arthrocentesis of the knee is a procedure in which a needle is inserted into the knee joint, and synovial fluid is aspirated. An arthrocentesis can be diagnostic or therapeutic. Synovial fluid may be removed for testing to determine the nature of the knee effusion. If septic arthritis is suspected, urgent arthrocentesis before initiation of antibiotic treatment is indicated. Moreover, arthrocentesis can also aid in diagnosing crystal-induced arthritis such as gout or pseudogout, or non-inflammatory arthritis such as osteoarthritis. Identifying the cause of the knee effusion can guide treatment

Veterinary radiology & ultrasound : the official journal of the American College of Veterinary Radiology and the International Veterinary Radiology Association2020eng
Equine temporomandibular joint (TMJ) diseases are increasingly recognized as a problem for the well-being and performance of horses. Diagnosis is confounded by overlap of clinical signs associated with pathology of the oral cavity, poll, and cervical vertebrae. Arthrocentesis for intra-articular analgesia, sampling of synovial fluid, and medication is needed for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. Ultrasound features of the normal TMJ and a blind arthrocentesis technique have been described, but a systematic approach to ultrasound-guided (USG) arthrocentesis has not been reported. Ultrasound

The objective of this study was to compare single-needle arthrocentesis with distension of the upper compartment of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) with the conventional two-needle arthrocentesis. Twenty-six patients with articular disc displacement without reduction (DDWOR) were included in the study and assigned to two groups (n = 13): single-needle arthrocentesis with distension of the upper compartment of the TMJ (1N) and conventional two-needle arthrocentesis (2N). The maximum interincisal distance (MID) and TMJ pain as measured by the visual analog scale (VAS) were compared. MID and VA

OBJECTIVES: To compare single- vs. double-needle arthrocentesis with viscosupplementation for treating disc displacement without reduction of the temporomandibular joint.
METHODS: Fifty-six patients with a magnetic resonance imaging diagnosis of non-reducing disc displacement were included. Arthrocentesis with viscosupplementation was performed on patients in group I using the Y-shaped needle (Shepard cannula) technique; the standard double-needle technique was performed on patients in group II. Patients were evaluated on postoperative day 1, and 1, 3, and 6 months later, patient- and procedu

BACKGROUND: Arthrocentesis is a very gentle method for lavage of the joint space. The principle consists in the introduction of a pair of needles into the upper joint space and subsequent lavage using physiological saline or Ringer's solution. Arthrocentesis of the temporomandibular joint is used in both cases of acute closed lock and treatment of various temporomandibular disorders.
METHODS: A literature search in Pubmed database, using key words: Temporomandibular joint (TMJ), Arthrocentesis, indications, technique, results.
CONCLUSION: Arthrocentesis of the temporomandibular joint is a mi

OBJECTIVES: This systematic review assessed the clinical question: 'Does ultrasonography (USG)-guided arthrocentesis provide better outcomes than conventional arthrocentesis in patients with temporomandibular disorder (TMD)?'
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The review was conducted based on the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) statement. An initial search was performed on electronic databases-including Medline, PubMed, and Cochrane Library-followed by manual and reference searches until the date September 27, 2019. The articles selected were evaluated for stu

INTRODUCTION: A large array of single-puncture arthrocentesis (SPA) techniques have been described in the literature, leading to considerable heterogeneity and limiting the comparability between procedures. The aim of this article is to review and classify the various SPA techniques published.
MATERIAL & METHODS: A literature review was conducted using the MEDLINE database with the search term "single puncture arthrocentesis". All studies that included references to SPA were considered eligible. Full-text articles were then assessed, and those that did not describe the SPA method were exclude

BACKGROUND: This study aims to compare medical students' educational outcomes in performing knee arthrocentesis through searching and using YouTube videos versus traditional supervisor-led sessions.
METHOD: Seventy-one medical students were randomly assigned to three groups. Group A had a traditional supervisor-led clinical session, where the supervisor demonstrated the procedure. Students in group B were provided with links to YouTube videos of knee arthrocentesis that were deemed to be of high educational quality, whereas group C searched and learned from any YouTube video that they found t

Arthrocentesis is a simple procedure, that may be performed under local anaesthesia and entails low risks of complications. It consists in the lavage of the upper joint compartment of the temporo-mandibular articulation through two transcutaneous needles of entrance and exit. The simplicity of execution, the low costs of the material employed and the excellent results published cause that this technique is beginning to be included in international protocols of treatment of temporomandibular dysfunctions. The clinical study involves 26 articulation in 25 patients. The age of the subjects at the

OBJECTIVE: To compare clinical and imaging results of two needles arthrocentesis (TNA) versus double-needle cannula arthrocentesis (DNCA) in the treatment of temporomandibular joint disc displacement (DD).
METHODS: Twenty patients with DD were randomly divided into two groups: TNA and DNCA. Clinical data (pain scores; maximal interincisal distance [MID], and protrusion and laterality movements) were evaluated before and 24 months after the arthrocentesis. Disc and condyle position and joint effusion (JE) were evaluated by magnetic resonance exams.
RESULTS: Both groups presented improvement i

In 27 children and young adults with hemophilia presenting acutely painful distended intra-articular hemorrhages of the knee, aspiration was carried out and the patients were followed for a minimum of 24 months. Seventeen patients with classical hemophilia were found to have less than 1 percent of normal plasmal level of antihemophilic factor (AHF). Of the remainder, five were Factor IX, plasma thromboplastin component (PTG), deficient, whereas two patients had Von Willebrand's disease. Aspiration was routinely done in an outpatient clinic, followed by immediate discharge with return to regula

BACKGROUND: Arthrocentesis is a minimally invasive procedure for treating intra-articular temporomandibular disorders. While it is considered relatively safe, like any surgical intervention, it carries potential risks.
PURPOSE: The study purpose was to estimate the frequency of complications associated with temporomandibular joint arthrocentesis, identify risk factors, and improve preparedness for effective prevention and management strategies.
STUDY DESIGN: In this retrospective cohort study, the investigators analyzed data from patients who underwent arthrocentesis treatment between 2015 a

Accessing a joint with a needle (arthrocentesis) to extract synovial fluid is a skill intrinsic to the rheumatologist's praxis. Joint aspirations are essential for diagnosing or excluding septic joints, are the gold standard for diagnosing acute crystal arthritis, and can provide valuable information about the nature of other forms of arthritis. In appropriate settings, injecting medications into joints can provide rapid, temporary, or even prolonged relief of pain and swelling and can provide a window of relief until other treatment modalities (anti-inflammatories, immunomodulators, and physi
