Elbow replacement arthroplasty has become a standard surgical treatment for a variety of diseases of the elbow. First popularized for the treatment of late-stage rheumatoid arthritis and other debilitating forms of joint disease, the current indications have expanded to include primary treatment of elbow trauma. The most commonly used total elbow replacements are linked semiconstrained chromium-molybdenum alloy or titanium alloy prostheses with polyethylene bearing surfaces. These are inserted after resection of the ulnotrochlear joint and typically cemented in place; the radial head is often

BACKGROUND: Recovery of elbow function is a challenging problem following resection arthroplasty after failure of total elbow prosthesis. The objective of this study is to evaluate long term functional outcome in a series of such patients.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Nineteen patients with twenty elbows who had failed total elbow arthroplasty (TEA) following the use of Baksi total elbow prosthesis needed removal of prosthesis during the period from 1978 to 2003. As two patients were lost to followup, 17 patients with 18 elbows (bilateral in one) were included in this study with a mean age of 44.3

Background and purpose - The Australian Orthopaedic Association National Joint Replacement Registry (AOANJRR) was analyzed to determine trends in use of primary total elbow arthroplasty (TEA), the types of prostheses used, primary diagnoses, reasons for and types of revision, and whether the primary diagnosis or prosthesis design influenced the revision rate.Patients and methods - During 2008-2018, 1,220 primary TEA procedures were reported of which 140 TEAs were revised. Kaplan-Meier estimates of survivorship were used to describe the time to first revision and hazard ratios (HR) from Cox pro

Tuberculous arthritis of the elbow joint (TAEJ) is a relatively rare infectious bone and joint disease. Misdiagnosed owing to inconspicuous early symptoms, often the elbow joint has suffered serious damage at the time of treatment. This study retrospectively investigated the clinical manifestations, population characteristics, clinical diagnosis, surgical treatment, and functional recovery of elbow joint tuberculosis (TB). A retrospective study of 40 patients was conducted. These patients were diagnosed with tuberculous arthritis of the elbow from June 2007 to August 2021 and were diagnosed wi

BACKGROUND: The radial head is considered the main stabilizer of the elbow when the medial collateral ligament and lateral ulnar collateral ligament have been compromised. Radial head replacement (RHR) is indicated for patients with irreparable or non-united radial head fractures associated with elbow stiffness or instability. The present study aimed to analyze the clinical results after treatment with titanium radial head prostheses, repair of torn soft tissue constraints, and early mobilization of the elbow.
METHODS: From 2002 to 2008, 13 patients with radial head fractures were included. R

BACKGROUND: Total elbow arthroplasty (TEA) has been used for various conditions including rheumatoid arthritis (RA). While the Kudo TEA has been associated with favorable short-term outcomes, there is limited information on the longer term outcomes of this device. The aim of this study was to investigate the average 15-year outcome of Kudo type-5 TEA in patients with RA.
METHODS: For this retrospective cohort study, we reviewed 29 elbows in 28 patients (Larsen grade III, n = 8; IV, n = 19; V, n = 2) with RA who underwent Kudo type-5 TEA between 1999 and 2010. The patients were followed up for

Total elbow arthroplasty is currently an established surgical treatment for several pathologies of the elbow. Although initially used primarily in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, indications for total elbow arthroplasty have expanded and now include trauma, primary and secondary osteoarthritis, fracture nonunion, and following neoplasm resection. Desired outcomes of elbow arthroplasty include decreasing patient pain, restoration of function and mobility, and prevention of or treatment for instability. In comparison with total elbow arthroplasty, radial head replacements are most commonl

BACKGROUND: The data on seventeen patients with rheumatoid arthritis who had been managed with ipsilateral total shoulder and elbow arthroplasties were analyzed to determine whether the operative technique, the presence of total shoulder and total elbow prostheses in the same upper extremity, or complications of the arthroplasties affected the result in each joint or the overall functional outcome of the upper extremity.
METHODS: Seventeen patients with rheumatoid arthritis who were managed with a total of eighteen ipsilateral total shoulder and elbow arthroplasties were evaluated. The most r

Elbow replacement or arthroplasty is a good therapeutic option for a large percentage of patients with significant joint destruction. However, many orthopaedic surgeons are no familiar with the surgical approaches or techniques associated with elbow replacement implants. Furthermore, the incidence of complications is higher than in other joint replacements, the most important being infections, mechanical failure, cubital neuropathy, and problems with the triceps. For these reasons, the use of bone arthroplasty in Spain may be less than ideal. Although, inflammatory arthritic diseases, such as

The outcome of prosthetic elbow surgery is continually evolving. We thoroughly reviewed the literature on this issue to analyse the indications, outcomes and complications of the numerous types of implants currently in use. Radial head replacement is recommended in comminuted fractures of the radial head and in post-traumatic conditions. Medium- and long-term results prove to be satisfactory in the majority of cases, with no evidence to indicate that some prostheses (monopolar vs. bipolar; cemented vs. press-fit) are more effective than others; nonetheless, the bipolar-cemented implant was fou

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of obesity in the United States has increased in recent decades. The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of obesity in patients undergoing primary total elbow arthroplasty.
METHODS: From 1987 to 2006, 723 primary semiconstrained, linked total elbow arthroplasties were performed in 654 patients. The average patient age (and standard deviation) at the time of surgery was 62.3 ± 13.7 years, with 550 total elbow arthroplasties (76%) performed in women. Total elbow arthroplasties were used to treat inflammatory conditions in patients undergoing 378 total elbo

PURPOSE: Radial head fractures are some of the most common elbow fractures. Fractures with 3 or more fracture fragments have been shown to have worse outcomes when treated with open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF). Radial head replacement offers an alternative treatment for those more comminuted radial head fractures.
METHODS: Three-part radial head fractures make anatomical reduction more difficult to obtain with ORIF. Radial head fractures requiring replacement have shown good clinical outcomes. As a result, radial head arthroplasty offers a good treatment option for 3-or-more-part r

Deep sepsis occurred after fourteen (9 per cent) of 156 elbow-replacement procedures in 140 patients. This high frequency of infection was attributed to several factors. First, the patients were drawn from a population that was at high risk of infection, because rheumatoid arthritis and post-traumatic arthritis were the indications for arthroplasty. Second, many of the patients had had prior surgery, which significantly (p less than 0.02) increased the risk of sepsis in those with rheumatoid arthritis. Third, some patients had surgery after the arthroplasty, which also seemed to predispose to

BACKGROUND: There is no consensus on the management of the radial head in total elbow arthroplasty (TEA). In 3-part TEA designs, options include radial head retention, excision, or arthroplasty. Biomechanical studies suggest improved varus-valgus stability with radial head implants in unlinked total elbows. Unfortunately, complications with radial head implants have been common with historical designs. The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical and radiographic outcomes of radial head implants in a current 3-part TEA and identify risk factors for mechanical failure.
METHODS: We perfor

In severely affected haemophilic patients arthropathy is a common problem which can lead to considerable pain and functional deficit. Surgical management, including total joint arthroplasty, can be undertaken if conservative management fails. A search of the literature showed that a number of studies describing the use of total knee arthroplasty (TKA) and total hip arthroplasty (THA) in haemophilia have been published, whereas shoulder, elbow and ankle arthroplasties are confined to case reports. This paper reviews the functional outcome of arthroplasty in the different joints, the postoperati

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: Total elbow arthroplasty is associated with a higher occurrence of complications than is usual for large-joint replacements. Two kinds of prostheses, unconstrained and semi-constrained, are currently used and each has its supporters or opponents. In this study the results of the two techniques used in our patients are evaluated and compared.
MATERIAL: Two groups of elbows in patients with rheumatoid arthritis were evaluated. One comprised 58 elbows treated by Souter-Strathclyde total elbow arthroplasty (S-S group). The mean age of the patients at the time of surgery was

Total elbow arthroplasty is effective for pain relief and the functional improvement of severe symptomatic hemophilic osteoproliferative arthropathy. Nevertheless, high complication rates have been reported. This report describes clinical results obtained at 30-month follow-up of total elbow arthroplasty in a hemophilic patient with severe flexion contracture. A 50-year-old patient with advanced left elbow hemophilic arthropathy underwent unlinked total elbow arthroplasty. He had sustained an intraoperative fracture of the medial part of a supracondylar humerus complication. To control periope

Radial head fractures are a particularly common yet challenging problem facing orthopedic surgeons today. Over the years multiple treatment modalities have been used including conservative management, open reduction and internal fixation, head excision, and radial head arthroplasty. The clinical outcome studies of metallic radial head arthroplasty systems indicate that head replacement is a reasonable option to offer patients with comminuted radial head fractures and complex elbow trauma. Overall the results for this procedure are quite encouraging and appear durable given the severity of the

The range of general and specific adverse event in total elbow arthroplasty is similar in principle and practice to all other revision prosthetic arthroplasty but with three particular challenges: loss of humeral and ulnar bone stock; insufficiency of the extensor 'mechanism'; and the management of the ulnar nerve. Total elbow replacement is presently performed for the management of complex non-reconstructable distal humeral fractures in osteoporotic bone, for post-traumatic arthropathy, and for medically managed inflammatory arthritides in which metaphyseal bone architecture is often preserve

BACKGROUND: Surgical treatment for terrible triad injuries of the elbow (defined as elbow dislocations with concomitant fractures of the radial head and coronoid) remains a challenging clinical problem. Specifically, the question of whether to repair or replace the radial head remains controversial.
QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: We compared patients with terrible triad injuries of the elbow whose radial head fracture was treated with either internal fixation and internal fixation (ORIF) or radial head arthroplasty in terms of (1) clinical outcome measures (DASH and Broberg-Morrey scores, ROM), (2) elbo
