Antennae of insects are essential mechanosensory organs that facilitate active tactile exploration and spatial navigation. Hair plate sensilla at the base of the antenna flagellum provide proprioceptive inputs to detect the antennae's position. In hemimetabolous insects, such as crickets, the first instar immediately after hatching also possesses antennae; however, the developmental dynamics and spatial organization of antennal hair plates remain poorly understood. We present a comprehensive three-dimensional analysis of the antennal hair plates in crickets (Gryllus bimaculatus) across develop

How do animals coordinate their motion during migration? Traditional models of movement coordination, for example, describing bird flocks or fish schools, rely on visual interactions. However, many animals are blind, requiring movement coordination through the maintenance of physical contact. The risks and cost of becoming accidentally separated may encourage the evolution of compensatory strategies. Here, we study tandem running in blind termites. We quantitatively investigate how these animals use their appendages to maintain stable pair movements. During tandem runs, male followers use thei

Many arthropods (insects and crustaceans) rely on their antennular chemosensory system to detect key environmental resources like food. While odor mediated food search is well studied in insects, characterization of crustacean chemosensory behavior has been limited by the long lifespans and large size of traditional crustacean model species. Here, we report the first characterizations of the food search behaviors of the genetically tractable amphipod crustacean, Parhyale hawaiensis. We find that Parhyale can locate an odorous food pellet, and predominantly approach food using direct, targeted

The antennal flagellum of the locust S. gregaria is an articulated structure bearing a spectrum of sensilla that responds to sensory stimuli. In this study, we focus on the basiconic-type bristles as a model for sensory system development in the antenna. At the end of embryogenesis, these bristles are found at fixed locations and then on only the most distal six articulations of the antenna. They are innervated by a dendrite from a sensory cell cluster in the underlying epithelium, with each cluster directing fused axons topographically to an antennal tract running to the brain. We employ conf

High-speed video recordings of escape responses in freely behaving crayfish revealed precisely coordinated movements of conspicuous head appendages, the antennal scales, during tail-flips that are produced by giant interneurons. For tail-flips that are generated by the medial giants (MG) in response to frontal attacks, the scales started to extend immediately after stimulation and extension was completed before the animal began to propel backwards. For tail-flips that are elicited by caudal stimuli and controlled by the lateral giants (LG), scale extensions began with significant delay after t

The evolution of allometry, changing how morphological traits scale to body size, has fueled adaptive radiations. In ants, allometry has facilitated the repeated evolution of a worker-soldier caste system. Here, we reveal an unexpected morphological pattern and its superorganismal regulation within the hyperdiverse genus Pheidole. We uncovered that antennal sizing between the small worker and the big soldier is identical, lacking intercaste scaling (antennae-body scaling is decoupled) yet retaining intracaste scaling. Furthermore, we have pinpointed the evolutionary origin of this decoupling.

Mosquitoes are unquestionably the most medically important arthropod vectors of disease. The maintenance and transmission of the pathogens that cause malaria, lymphatic filariasis, and numerous viral infections are absolutely dependent on the availability of competent mosquito vectors. Although the medical community has known for over a century the role played by mosquitoes in the transmission of malaria and lymphatic filariasis, these diseases continue to have a devastating influence on less privileged populations throughout the tropical and subtropical regions of the world. The present study

The detection of magnetic fields by animals is known as magnetoreception. The ferromagnetic hypothesis explains magnetoreception assuming that magnetic nanoparticles are used as magnetic field transducers. Magnetite nanoparticles in the abdomen of Apis mellifera honeybees have been proposed in the literature as the magnetic field transducer. However, studies with ants and stingless bees have shown that the whole body of the insect contain magnetic material, and that the largest magnetization is in the antennae. The aim of the present study is to investigate the magnetization of all the body pa

This study is the first to fully evaluate whether electrical signals applied to large insects during electropenetrography (EPG; also called electrical penetration graph) negatively affect insect behavior. During EPG, electrical signals are applied to plants, and thus to the gold-wire-tethered insects feeding on them. The insect completes an electrical circuit whose changes in voltage reflect the insect's stylet probing/penetration behaviors, recorded as waveform output. For nearly 50 years of EPG science, evidence has supported that there are no or negligible effects on tiny insects from appli

Odour capture is an important part of olfaction, where dissolved chemical cues (odours) are brought into contact with chemosensory structures. Antennule flicking by marine crabs is an example of discrete odour capture (sniffing) where an array of chemosensory hairs is waved through the water to create a flow-no flow pattern based on a narrow range of speeds, diameters of and spacings between hairs. Changing the speed of movement and spacing of hairs at this scale to manipulate flow represents a complicated fluid dynamics problem. In this study, we use numerical simulation of the advection and

Wohlfahrtia magnifica (Schiner 1861) is the sole causative agent of vaginal myiasis in Bactrian camels, and its antennal sensilla serve as essential sensory organs for detecting environmental chemical cues. However, no systematic study has been reported on the morphology of antennal sensilla in male and female. Here, we examined and compared the antennal morphology of male and female W. magnifica using scanning electron microscopy. The antennae consist of 3 main segments, the scape, pedicel, and funiculus, with an arista arising from the funiculus. Four sensillum types were identified: chaetic

DEET and citronella oil are two of the most widely used mosquito repellents; however, their impact on chemosensory tissues is not fully understood. In their vapour phase, the repellency effect involves the olfactory system, with mosquitoes detecting and responding to diverse odorants through their antennae and mouthparts (maxillary palps and proboscis). In this study, we first performed repellency behavioural assays that indicated both DEET and citronella effectively impaired female Aedes aegypti host-seeking capabilities (i.e. landing on a host and taking a blood meal). We next used RNA seque

BACKGROUND: Tandem running is a recruitment method found in some species of ants where one ant follows another ant to reach a destination having maintained a physical contact with its antennae, throughout the journey. It is considered that the exchange of information regarding the destination among the nestmates happened during the process of tandem running. We examined the impact of restricting antennal movement on tandem running by using Diacamma indicum, a tandem-running ponerine ant by following 480 tandem runs across 9 treatment colonies and comparing it with 10 control relocating colonie

Sensilla on head appendages were studied in detail for the first time in a member of the relict family Hygrobiidae (squeak beetles), closely related to Dytiscidae (diving beetles). Adult and third instar larval stage specimens of Hygrobia hermanni (Fabricius, 1775) were examined using scanning electron microscopy, focusing on antennae, palps and larval mandibles. In total, 37 sensilla subtypes are described, including 22 observed in the adult (basiconica: 3; Böhm's bristles: 2; circumvallate sensilla: 2; coeloconica: 10; ovoid placodea: 3; digitiform placodea: 2) and 16 in the larva (basiconic

Insulin receptors (InR) are an integral component of the insulin/insulin-like growth factor signaling pathway, which plays a vital role in insect development, lifespan, reproduction, and olfactory sensitivity. However, whether InR participate in the peripheral olfactory system of insects remains unclear. Recently, we found that 2-heptanone (2-HT) affects AcerInR expression, the gene for an InR protein, in Apis cerana cerana. We then examined the spatiotemporal expression profile of the gene in A. cerana cerana. The mRNA of AcerInR was primarily expressed in the antennae, wings, and legs of for

There are direct relationships between the behavioral mechanisms and sensilla. To obtain a better understanding of the behavioral mechanisms in Omosita colon (Linnaeus) (Coleoptera: Nitidulidae), we investigated the types, quantities, and distribution of sensilla on the antenna and mouthparts of O. colon by scanning electron microscopy. The clavate antenna comprised the scape, pedicel, and nine segment flagellomeres and had six types of sensilla, including two subtypes of sensilla chaetica (SC), three subtypes of sensilla basiconica (SB) and sensilla trichodea (ST), and one type of sensilla ca

Lucilia sericata (Meigen) is a cosmopolitan synanthropic fly of forensic and medical importance, which can work as a mechanic vector of pathogens or cause myiasis of both human and sheep. As essential olfactory organs, antennae of adult L. sericata were examined with stereoscopic microscope, scanning electron microscope, and laser scanning confocal microscope. On antennal scape and pedicel, both microtirchiae and several bristles are detected, while another two structures, setiferous plaques and pedicellar buttons, are also found on the antennal pedicel. Seven subtypes of antennal sensilla are

Antennae are vital insect sensory organs, primarily used for interactions with other organisms and the detection of the environment. Bipectinate antennae have evolved independently in the insect orders Lepidoptera, Coleoptera, Hymenoptera, Diptera and Cretaceous Mecoptera, Neuroptera, Trichoptera, and Blattaria. However, among Blattaria they are extremely rare and bipectinate antennae have been known only from one mid-Cretaceous species, while pectinate antennae were documented in two mid-Cretaceous species and one extant species from China. Here we describe Pinniblatta sylvana gen. et sp. nov

The Liriomyza trifolii is a highly invasive polyphagia pest. Understanding the physiological functions of odorant binding proteins (OBPs) in the chemical communication of L. trifolii can lead to effective pest management strategies. Seven full-length OBPs were identified by transcriptome screening of L. trifolii adults. Bioinformatics analyses classified the seven OBPs into two subfamilies (six classic OBPs, one minus-C OBP). The analysis of their expression in different development stages revealed that LtriOBP5 was highly expressed in the larval stage, LtriOBP4 in the pupa stage, and LtriOBP1

Chromatin immunoprecipitation (ChIP) is a well-characterized procedure used to reveal specific patterns of protein-DNA interactions and identify the binding sites of proteins on DNA. ChIP has been used to study many aspects of Drosophila biology, including neurobiology. This protocol describes in detail how to prepare cross-linked chromatin from Drosophila antennae and brains followed by immunoprecipitation (X-ChIP). We first describe tissue dissection, chromatin cross-linking with formaldehyde, quenching of the cross-linking, homogenization of tissues, and sonication for shearing the chromati
