Rickettsial pathogens and their arthropod vectors.

Rickettsial diseases, important causes of illness and death worldwide, exist primarily in endemic and enzootic foci that occasionally give rise to sporadic or seasonal outbreaks. Rickettsial pathogens are highly specialized for obligate intracellular survival in both the vertebrate host and the invertebrate vector. While studies often focus primarily on the vertebrate host, the arthropod vector is often more important in the natural maintenance of the pathogen. Consequently, coevolution of rickettsiae with arthropods is responsible for many features of the host-pathogen relationship that are u

[Protection of travellers against biting arthropod vectors].

Several diseases are transmitted by hematophageous insect/arthropod and, except for yellow fever and Japanese B encephalitis, there are still no vaccines. Personal protection therefore remains the choice method for disease prevention and can usefully complete chemoprophylaxis if available (such as for malaria). Personal protection can be ensured by three main methods: avoiding risky areas; using repellents on skin and/or garments; using pyrethroids insecticide on garments (permethrin), mosquito nets (several Pyr. available) and any other materials (curtains etc.) including camping tents, plast

Arthropod promoters for genetic control of disease vectors.

Vector-borne diseases (VBDs) impose devastating effects on human health and a heavy financial burden. Malaria, Lyme disease, and dengue fever are just a few examples of VBDs that cause severe illnesses. The current strategies to control VBDs consist mainly of environmental modification and chemical use, and to a small extent, genetic approaches. The genetic approaches, including transgenesis/genome modification and gene-drive technologies, provide the basis for developing new tools for VBD prevention by suppressing vector populations or reducing their capacity to transmit pathogens. [Human diffusion of arthropod disease vectors throughout the world].

The present distribution of animals and plants throughout the world is the result of an evolutionary process involving tectonic, climatic and biotic factors. Humans, since their appearance, have contributed to the spreading of many species including disease vectors and pests. When humans left their native African home, they brought with them ectoparasites such as lice and acarids. During the neolithic era, humans were leading domesticated animals which carried their own parasites into new areas. Dwelling commensals, flea, bugs, triatomids, flies, and cockroaches followed human migrations. In t

Arthropod vectors and vector-borne bacterial pathogens in Yosemite National Park.

Ticks, fleas, and vector-borne pathogens were surveyed in diverse small mammals in Yosemite National Park, California, from 2005 to 2007. A total of 450 unique captures of small mammals was collected during a 3-yr period and yielded 16 species of fleas and 10 species of ticks, including known vectors of Anaplasma phagocytophilum and Borrelia burgdorferi and plague. Serology was performed for A. phagocytophilum, spotted fever group Rickettsia spp., B. burgdorferi, and Yersinia pestis. A. phagocytophilum exposure was identified in 12.1% of all wild small mammals tested, with seropositive animals

[Targeted parasite control of arthropod vectors' behavior in mammals, including man].

A broad spectrum of pathogenic species is able to purposefully change the behavior of mammals, intermediate hosts, thus increasing the probability for parasites to transform into a final host and preserving them as a species. For this, pathogens decrease host mobility or inhibit an avoidance reaction in a carnivore, the final host of the parasite. The found similar effects of some pathogens on human behavior are of no selective value as man is not an indispensable link in the ecological chain of parasitic development. However, such an action on behavior may result in negative consequences. For

Subolesin/Akirin vaccines for the control of arthropod vectors and vectorborne pathogens.

Diseases transmitted by arthropod vectors such as mosquitoes, ticks and sand flies greatly impact human and animal health, and therefore, their control is important for the eradication of vectorborne diseases (VBD). Vaccination is an environmentally friendly alternative for vector control that allows control of several VBD by targeting their common vector. Recent results have suggested that subolesin (SUB) and its orthologue in insects, akirin (AKR) are good candidate antigens for the control of arthropod vector infestations and pathogen infection. SUB was discovered as a tick-protective antig

Cat scratch disease and arthropod vectors: more to it than a scratch?

PURPOSE: Cat scratch disease is a common infection, particularly in children, and clinicians need to be aware of its potential transmission to humans by arthropod vectors such as fleas and ticks in addition to animal bites and scratches. The absence of a vertebrate bite or scratch does not preclude infection with Bartonella henselae. METHODS: Literature regarding arthropod transmission of B. henselae was reviewed. RESULTS: B. henselae and related bacterial species are transmitted among cats and dogs by arthropod vectors. In the absence of these vectors, disease does not spread amongst the an

Genetic variation in arthropod vectors of disease-causing organisms: obstacles and opportunities.

An overview of the genetic variation in arthropods that transmit pathogens to vertebrates is presented, emphasizing the genetics of vector-pathogen relationships and the biochemical genetics of vectors. Vector-pathogen interactions are reviewed briefly as a prelude to a discussion of the genetics of susceptibility and refractoriness in vectors. Susceptibility to pathogens is controlled by maternally inherited factors, sex-linked dominant alleles, and dominant and recessive autosomal genes. There is widespread interpopulation (including intercolony) and temporal variation in susceptibility to p

Transmission dynamics of Borrelia turicatae from the arthropod vector.

BACKGROUND: With the global distribution, morbidity, and mortality associated with tick and louse-borne relapsing fever spirochetes, it is important to understand the dynamics of vector colonization by the bacteria and transmission to the host. Tick-borne relapsing fever spirochetes are blood-borne pathogens transmitted through the saliva of soft ticks, yet little is known about the transmission capability of these pathogens during the relatively short bloodmeal. This study was therefore initiated to understand the transmission dynamics of the relapsing fever spirochete Borrelia turicatae from

Mansonella ozzardi in Haiti II. Arthropod vector studies.

The present vector studies show that the biting midge, Culicoides furens, serves as an intermediate host for Mansonella ozzardi in Haiti. A total of 3,430 C. furens were collected as they engorged on infected individuals. Under the maintenance conditions described herein, the microfilaria required 9 days to reach the infective stage. Approximately 43% of the midges survived, and from these 1,128 infective stage larvae were collected. This represents an overall infection rate of 0.76 larva per midge. Typically, there was a directly proportional relationship between the infection rate in midges

Immunological consequences of arthropod vector-derived salivary factors.

Diseases, such as malaria, dengue, leishmaniasis and tick-borne encephalitis, affect a substantial percentage of the world's population and continue to result in significant morbidity and mortality. One common aspect of these diseases is that the pathogens that cause them are transmitted by the bite of an infected arthropod (e.g. mosquito, sand fly, tick). The pathogens are delivered into the skin of the mammalian host along with arthropod saliva, which contains a wide variety of bioactive molecules. These saliva components are capable of altering hemostasis and immune responses and may contri

Bloodsucking arthropods: the danger for travellers and hazard of vector travelling.

The newly obtained data supplemented our knowledge about risk for travellers, tourists and natives of Europe connected with malaria, leishmaniasis and other tropical diseases. It was discovered that healthy carriers of Epstein-Barr virus (nearly 90% of human population) have a great risk to get chronic Burkitt lymphoma disease as a result of Plasmodium falciparum (tropical malaria agent) infection. HIV carriers being occasionally in contact with visceral leishmaniasis vectors (sand-flies infected on dogs in the Mediterranean area) not only got a heavy form of disease but became a source of inf

MicroRNA Responses Associated with Vector-Borne Diseases in Humans and Arthropod Vectors: A Systematic Review.

Vector-borne diseases (VBDs) represent a significant public health challenge. Early and accurate diagnosis is crucial for effective disease management and control, with host-encoded microRNAs (miRNAs) emerging as promising disease biomarkers. This systematic review surveys research conducted on miRNA responses in disease vectors and human hosts of VBDs. A systematic search of four databases and manual searching identified 93 qualifying articles. Numerous VBDs were described, with the most common focus on dengue (21%; n = 15) and Chagas disease (11%; n = 8). Twenty-eight in vivo human studies h

Commensal Rodent Habitat Expansion Enhances Arthropod Disease Vectors on a Tropical Volcanic Island.

On volcanic islands, the release of animals from predators and competitors can lead to increased body size and population density as well as the expanded habitat use of introduced animals relative to their mainland counterparts. Such alterations might facilitate the spread of diseases on islands when these exotic animals also carry pathogenic agents; however, this has rarely been investigated. The commensal Asian house rat (Rattus tanezumi) is confined to human residential surroundings in mainland Taiwan but can be observed in the forests of nearby Orchid Island, which is a tropical volcanic i
