Aphemia: an isolated disorder of articulation.

Aphemia is a disorder with prominent speech abnormality. Since its description by Broca, there has been debate regarding the neuropsychological disorganization underlying aphemia: is aphemia an articulatory disorder or a language disorder? We describe a patient with markedly impaired articulation, but preserved receptive and written language function and buccal-facial coordination. The location of his stroke was in the left precentral gyrus, undercutting a small area of motor and premotor cortex. This case suggests that aphemia can occur as an isolated articulation deficit without language inv

[Error analysis of functional articulation disorders in children].

OBJECTIVE: To explore the clinical characteristic of functional articulation disorders in children and provide more evidence for differential diagnosis and speech therapy. METHODS: 172 children with functional articulation disorders were grouped by age. Children aged 4-5 years were assigned to one group, and those aged 6-10 years were to another group. Their phonological samples were collected and analyzed. RESULTS: In the two groups, substitution and omission (deletion) were the mainly articulation errors in these children, dental consonants were the main wrong sounds, and bilabial and labi

Electropalatography in the treatment of articulation/phonological disorders.

Treatment using electropalatography (EPG) is described. Speech learners wear a custom-made appliance called a pseudopalate in order to view their tongue-to-palate (lingual palatal) contacts on a computer monitor. The results from studies with children who have either articulation or phonology-based problems are discussed. Assessments of contact patterns used by articulation-impaired children suggests that they may produce more atypical articulatory contacts than are noted perceptually. Remediation, using electropalatography, showed that the children benefited from learning new articulatory ges

[Pharmacotherapy of voice and articulation disorders in aphasia].

The phonation and articulation disorders in a group of aphasics with aphonia/dysarthrophonia could be considerably reduced by the use of medication. The group consisted of 10 apoplectic patients whose resulting aphasia could not be classified because of the vocal impairment. Extrapyramidal motion disorders were proved by laryngoscopy and stroboscopy. A definite improvement of phonation and articulation was observed after L-dopa medication.

Speech processing in children with functional articulation disorders.

This study explored auditory speech processing and comprehension abilities in 5-8-year-old monolingual Hungarian children with functional articulation disorders (FADs) and their typically developing peers. Our main hypothesis was that children with FAD would show co-existing auditory speech processing disorders, with different levels of these skills depending on the nature of the receptive processes. The tasks included (i) sentence and non-word repetitions, (ii) non-word discrimination and (iii) sentence and story comprehension. Results suggest that the auditory speech processing of children w

Electropalatography for articulation disorders associated with cleft palate.

BACKGROUND: Cleft palate is the most common congenital deformity of the face. It could affect speech acquisition, resulting in articulation errors that could persist into adulthood. Electropalatography (EPG) has been used in speech therapy with individuals who have articulation problems that are unresponsive to "standard treatment" procedures. OBJECTIVES: To determine the effectiveness of speech intervention using electropalatography (EPG) for treating articulation errors in individuals with repaired cleft palate. SEARCH STRATEGY: The following databases were searched: CENTRAL 2008 (Issue1),

The relationship between auditory processing disorder and articulation disorders.

PURPOSE: Auditory processing disorder (APD) may attribute to certain speech problems, as auditory processing plays a vital role in phonetic development during childhood. This research investigates the incidence of APD in individuals with misarticulations of the /r/, /s/, /k/, /θ/, /dʒ/, and /q/ speech sounds. These sounds represent different places of articulation, manners of articulation, and phonation. METHOD: A total of 51 participants with articulation disorders aged 6-18 years underwent conventional peripheral assessments, including otoscopic examination, immittance measurement, and audi

[Molecular genetics of functional articulation disorder in children].

Genetic factors are an important cause of functional articulation disorder in children. This article reviews some genes and chromosome regions associated with a genetic susceptibility to functional articulation disorders. The forkhead box P2 (FOXP2) gene on chromosome 7 is introduced in details including its structure, expression and function. The relationship between the FOXP2 gene and developmental apraxia of speech is discussed. As a transcription factor, FOXP2 gene regulates the expression of many genes. CNTNAP2 as an important target gene of FOXP2 is a key gene influencing language develo

Speech summer camp for treating articulation disorders in cleft palate patients.

INTRODUCTION: Compensatory articulation disorder (CAD) severely affects speech intelligibility of cleft palate children. CAD must be treated with speech therapy. Children can manage articulation better when they use language in event contexts such as every day routines. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this paper is to study and compare two modalities of speech intervention in cleft palate children with associated CAD. The first modality is a conventional approach providing speech therapy in 1-h sessions, twice a week. The second modality is a speech summer camp in which children received therapy 4h

Oral Myofunctional and Articulation Disorders in Children with Malocclusions: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Relationships between malocclusion and orofacial myofunctional disorders (OMD), as well as malocclusions and articulation disorders (AD) have been described, though the exact relationships remain unclear. Given the high prevalence of these disorders in children, more clarity is needed. SUMMARY: The purpose of this study was to determine the association between OMD (specifically, bruxism, deviate swallowing, caudal resting tongue posture, and biting habits), AD, and malocclusions in children and adolescents aged between 3 and 18 years. To conduct a systematic review, 4 databases we

Automatic detection of articulation disorders in children with cleft lip and palate.

Speech of children with cleft lip and palate (CLP) is sometimes still disordered even after adequate surgical and nonsurgical therapies. Such speech shows complex articulation disorders, which are usually assessed perceptually, consuming time and manpower. Hence, there is a need for an easy to apply and reliable automatic method. To create a reference for an automatic system, speech data of 58 children with CLP were assessed perceptually by experienced speech therapists for characteristic phonetic disorders at the phoneme level. The first part of the article aims to detect such characteristics

A case of hemangiopericytoma of the soft palate with articulate disorder and dysphagia.

We report a case of hemangiopericytoma of the soft palate of 60-year-old patient, who noticed a mass of the soft palate and experienced difficulty in speaking. We found a pediculate, hard, elastic mass measuring 38 mm (cross-sectional diameter). Computed tomography (CT) scans and dynamic magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) confirmed irregularly shaped mass and revealed a heterogeneous internal composition, consistent with vascular tumors. We excised the tumor under general anesthesia. Histopathological diagnosis was based on positive immunoreactivity of CD99 and vimentin and weak, positive staini

An instrumental phonetic study of lingual activity in articulation-disordered children.

Traditional auditory-based assessment procedures for diagnosing articulation disorders are limited in that they provide no direct information on activities of the speech organs. In this study electropalatography (EPG) was used to obtain details of tongue contacts with the hard palate in 4 articulation-disordered children, 2 of whom had been categorized as dysarthric. Their lingual-palatal contact patterns during four repetitions of word lists containing lingual consonants in different phonetic environments, were compared with each other and with a group of normal speakers. EPG provided relevan

Sensory integration dysfunction affects efficacy of speech therapy on children with functional articulation disorders.

BACKGROUND: Articulation disorders in young children are due to defects occurring at a certain stage in sensory and motor development. Some children with functional articulation disorders may also have sensory integration dysfunction (SID). We hypothesized that speech therapy would be less efficacious in children with SID than in those without SID. Hence, the purpose of this study was to compare the efficacy of speech therapy in two groups of children with functional articulation disorders: those without and those with SID. METHOD: A total of 30 young children with functional articulation dis
