Arum concinnatum Schott is a highly thermogenic species, with the temperature of the appendix exceeding ~10.9°C above the ambient temperature during thermogenesis, whereas the rates of respiration of the male florets in intact inflorescences peak at 0.92μmol s-1 g-1, which is the highest rate so far measured among the plants. Here, we attempt the ex situ exogenous induction of thermogenesis in whole inflorescences and in separate appendices of the spadix, and explore the thermogenic patterns under controlled laboratory conditions of light and temperature. Mature but unopened inflorescences and

Cyanide-resistant alternative oxidase (AOX) is a nuclear-encoded quinol oxidase located in the inner mitochondrial membrane. Although the quality control of AOX proteins is expected to have a role in elevated respiration in mitochondria, it remains unclear whether thermogenic plants possess molecular mechanisms for the mitochondrial degradation of AOX. To better understand the mechanism of AOX turnover in mitochondria, we performed a series of in organello AOX degradation assays using mitochondria from various stages of the appendices of Arum maculatum. Our analyses clearly indicated that AOX

In many Araceae both scent and heat production are known to temporally vary throughout anthesis, and in several species strong scents are released for pollinator attraction when thermogenesis is also strong. However, it is not known whether the temporal patterns of both scent emission and temperature are strictly synchronous and, for example, reach their maxima at the same time. We studied Arum maculatum, a brood-site deceptive species attracting its moth fly pollinators with strong fetid scents, to study temporal patterns in scent emission and temperature during anthesis. Inflorescence scents

The phytochemical composition and biological activities of extracts obtained from the aerial parts (ARA), fruits (ARF), and rhizomes (ARR) of Arum rupicola var. rupicola (Araceae) were investigated using in vitro and in silico approaches. Phenolic and volatile profiles were characterized by HPLC and GC/MS. Antioxidant (DPPH), antimicrobial (MIC), and cytotoxic (MTT) activities were evaluated. Molecular docking, MM-GBSA, and ADME analyses were performed using Schrödinger Maestro. HPLC revealed that rutin (35,001 µg/mL) and coumaric acid (13,145 µg/mL) were the dominant phenolics in ARA, while q

Arum maculatum is a medicinal plant that has been employed in traditional medicine for treating liver diseases. The objective of the current study was to evaluate the hepatoprotective impacts of ethanolic extract of the A. maculatum leaves on cirrhosis induced by thioacetamide (TAA) in Sprague--Dawley rats. The rats were treated for two months with thioacetamide (TAA) administered intraperitoneally thrice weekly. Histopathological examination revealed severe liver damage in the thioacetamide control group, while the silymarin treatments (p < 0.05). Furthermore, A. maculatum treatment led to th

Plant-based functional foods enriched with natural bioactive compounds have attracted increasing attention due to their potential health benefits. However, studies on the functional enhancement of non-soy tofu systems remain limited. In this study, the use of nivik (Arum maculatum) leaf extract as a functional ingredient in red lentil tofu was investigated. Tofu samples were prepared with different extract concentrations and evaluated in terms of phenolic and flavonoid contents, antioxidant activity (2,2'-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) [ABTS], 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl

Used for 13 years, the "Intra-Focal Pinning" procedure for the fixation of the Colles fractures, has been criticized on certain points: pin expulsion, risks of injuring the tendons by the cut end of the pin. A new type of pin in proposed, the "ARUM" pin, that is composed of a 20/10 mm screwed pin and a special nut, which has a curved conical form, with a convex base bearing a cruciform groove. Its axial canal has a little space at the base. There are two ancillary tools: a special wire-cutter with asymmetric cutting blades, that can cut the pin close to the nut, and a compound screwdriver and

X-band electron-paramagnetic-resonance spectroscopy at 4.2--77K combined with measurements of oxidation-reduction potential was used to identify iron--sulphur centres in Arum maculatum (cuckoo-pint) mitochondria. In the oxidized state a signal with a derivative maximum at g = 2.02 was assigned to succinate dehydrogenase centre S-3. Unreduced particles showed additional signals at g = 2.04 and 1.98 (at 9.2 GHz), which may be due to a spin-spin interaction. In the reduced state a prominent signal at g = 1.93 and 2.02 was resolved into at least three components that could be assigned to centres S

Staining and histochemistry of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were performed at different inflorescence developmental stages on nine aroid species; one temperate, Arum italicum and eight tropical from the genera Caladium, Dieffenbachia and Philodendron. Moreover, a qualitative and quantitative analysis of VOCs constituting the scent of A. italicum, depending on the stage of development of inflorescences was also conducted. In all nine species, vesicles were observed in the conical cells of either the appendix or the stamens (thecae) and the staminodes. VOCs were localised in intracellular v

Deceptive pollination often involves volatile organic compound emissions that mislead insects into performing nonrewarding pollination. Among deceptively pollinated plants, Arum maculatum is particularly well-known for its potent dung-like volatile organic compound emissions and specialized floral chamber, which traps pollinators-mainly Psychoda phalaenoides and Psychoda grisescens-overnight. However, little is known about the genes underlying the production of many Arum maculatum volatile organic compounds, and their influence on variation in pollinator attraction rates. Therefore, we perform

Most angiosperms are pollinated by animals, with insects being the most abundant and diverse pollinators. However, our knowledge about the diversity of Diptera as floral visitors and pollinators, and about their attraction to flowers, is still limited. Fly-deceptive plant species, such as Arum maculatum, are ideal model systems to explore these interactions, as their floral scents often mimic (parts of) the ecological niches associated with the dipteran life cycle (e.g., mating, breeding). In this study, we investigated the species and sex identity of lesser dung flies (Sphaeroceridae), the se

Thermogenic flowers produce heat by intense respiration, and the rates of O2 consumption (Ṁo2) in some species can exceed those of all other tissues of plants and most animals. By exposing intact flowers to a range of O2 pressures (Po2) and measuring Ṁo2, we demonstrate that the highest respiration rates exceed the capacity of the O2 diffusive pathway and become diffusion limited in atmospheric air. The male florets on the inflorescence of Arum concinnatum have the highest known mass-specific Ṁo2 and can be severely diffusion limited. Intact spadices of Japanese skunk cabbage Symplocarpus reni

Thermogenesis is attributed to the cyanide resistant respiration in the inflorescence of Arum lilies. Although cyanide resistant respiration is ubiquitously operative in the plant systems, it has never been correlated with thermogenesis except for the above example. Internal temperature of the ripening mango increased from 29.0 degrees C to 38.9 degrees C during its ripening process. Concomitantly, it was coupled with the increase in total respiration and cyanide resistant respiration as well. Implication of cyanide resistant respiration in thermogenesis has been discussed in relation to the r
