Cryptosporidium infecting wild cricetid rodents from the subfamilies Arvicolinae and Neotominae.

We undertook a study on Cryptosporidium spp. in wild cricetid rodents. Fecal samples were collected from meadow voles (Microtus pennsylvanicus), southern red-backed voles (Myodes gapperi), woodland voles (Microtus pinetorum), muskrats (Ondatra zibethicus) and Peromyscus spp. mice in North America, and from bank voles (Myodes glareolus) and common voles (Microtus arvalis) in Europe. Isolates were characterized by sequence and phylogenetic analyses of the small subunit ribosomal RNA (SSU) and actin genes. Overall, 33·2% (362/1089) of cricetids tested positive for Cryptosporidium, with a greater

Comparative Analysis of Leukocyte Proportions and Morphology in Wild Muridae and Arvicolinae Rodents.

Hematological profiles of wild rodents provide important insights into their species-specific adaptations, physiological status, and immune responses. However, reference data for wild species remain limited since these are mainly derived from laboratory rodents. This study investigated the leukocyte composition and morphology in 113 wild rodents representing the family Muridae and the subfamily Arvicolinae from several regions of seven prefectures of Greece. Blood samples were collected from live-trapped individuals, and peripheral blood smears were analyzed using Giemsa staining. We evaluated

Morphological diversity of dental and mandibular deformities in Microtus hartingi (Rodentia, Arvicolinae).

We analyzed 104 labial and lingual projections of Harting's vole (Microtus hartingi) mandibles using linear and geometric morphometrics. Incisor and molar overgrowth and mandibular deformations were described in 2 Harting's vole populations. Over a 6-year research period, excessive incisor growth was observed in 15.4% of the Rhodopean M. hartingi population and in 10.3% of the Central Anatolian form M. h. ankaraensis. Maxillary incisors lengthening up to 2.3× the norm was noted, often accompanied by mandibular incisor shortening. Nevertheless, voles with overgrown incisors were able to feed an

Parasites in brains of wild rodents (Arvicolinae and Murinae) in the city of Leipzig, Germany.

Small rodents serve as intermediate or paratenic hosts for a variety of parasites and may participate in the transmission of these parasites into synanthropic cycles. Parasites with neuroinvasive stages, such as Toxoplasma gondii or Toxocara canis, can cause detrimental damage in the brain of intermediate or paratenic hosts. Therefore, the occurrence of neuroinvasive parasite stages was evaluated in brains of wild rodents captured in the city of Leipzig, Germany. In addition, a few specimens from the cities of Hanover, Germany, and Vienna, Austria were included, resulting in a total of 716 rod

Variability in susceptibility of voles (Arvicolinae) to experimental infection with Cryptosporidium muris and Cryptosporidium andersoni.

The infectivity of Cryptosporidium muris and Cryptosporidium andersoni in various species of voles was studied using experimental infections. None of the experimental voles inoculated with 1 × 10(5) oocysts of Cryptosporidium spp. shed any oocysts during 40 DPI, except Brandt's vole (Lasiopodomys brandtii), which was susceptible to C. muris infection. Experiments confirmed the resistance of voles of the genus Microtus sensu stricto to infection with mammalian gastric cryptosporidia, which provides a new study model with prospects to more fully understand the processes involved in the phenomeno

Fear effects on bank voles (Rodentia: Arvicolinae): testing for repellent candidates from predator volatiles.

BACKGROUND: Arvicolinae rodents are known pests causing damage to both agricultural and forest crops. Today, rodenticides for rodent control are widely discouraged owing to their negative effects on the environment. Rodents are the main prey for several predators, and their complex olfactory system allows them to identify risks of predation. Therefore, the potential use of predators' scents as repellents has gained interest as an ecologically based rodent control method. In a two-choice experiment, we investigated the potential repellent effects of five synthetic predator compounds: 2-phenylet

Chromosome Asynapsis Is the Main Cause of Male Sterility in the Interspecies Hybrids of East Asian Voles (Alexandromys, Rodentia, Arvicolinae).

Closely related mammalian species often have differences in chromosome number and morphology, but there is still a debate about how these differences relate to reproductive isolation. To study the role of chromosome rearrangements in speciation, we used the gray voles in the Alexandromys genus as a model. These voles have a high level of chromosome polymorphism and substantial karyotypic divergence. We investigated testis histology and meiotic chromosome behavior in the captive-bred colonies of Alexandromys maximowiczii, Alexandromys mujanensis, two chromosome races of Alexandromys evoronensis

A widespread distribution for Arostrilepis tenuicirrosa (Eucestoda: Hymenolepididae) in Myodes voles (Cricetidae: Arvicolinae) from the Palearctic based on molecular and morphological evidence: historical and biogeographic implications.

Hymenolepidid cestodes in Myodes glareolus from Lithuania and additional specimens originally attributed to Arostrilepis horrida from the Republic of Belarus are now referred to A. tenuicirrosa. Our study includes the first records of A. tenuicirrosa from the European (western) region of the Palearctic, and contributes to the recognition of A. horrida (sensu lato) as a complex of cryptic species distributed broadly across the Holarctic. Specimens of A. tenuicirrosa from Lithuania were compared to cestodes representing apparently disjunct populations in the eastern Palearctic based on structura

Complete mitochondrial genomes confirm the generic placement of the plateau vole, Neodon fuscus.

The plateau vole, Neodon fuscus is endemic to China and is distributed mainly in Qinghai Province. It is of public health interest, as it is, a potential reservoir of Toxoplasma gondii and the intermediate host of Echinococcus multilocularis However, genetic data of this species are lacking, and its name and taxonomy are still a controversy. In the present study, we determined the nucleotide sequence of the entire mitochondrial (mt) genome of N. fuscus and analyzed its evolutionary relationship. The mitogenome was 16328 bp in length and contained 13 protein-coding genes, 22 genes for transfer

Puumala virus pulmonary syndrome in a Romanian immigrant.

Hantaviruses belong to the Bunyaviridae family, which is comprised of Bunyavirus, Phlebovirus, Nairovirus, and Hantavirus. Euroasiatic Hantaviruses belong to two distinct subfamilies: Murinae (comprising Hantaan, Dobrava, and Seoul viruses), which are responsible for hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS), and Arvicolinae (comprising Puumala virus), responsible for nephropathia epidemica (NE) and HFRS. On the contrary, the New World Hantavirus belongs to the Sigmodontinae subfamily and includes the North American viruses: Sin Nombre, Monongahela; New York, Bayou, Black Creek Canal, and t

A novel hantavirus detected in Yunnan red-backed vole (Eothenomys miletus) in China.

Rodents are the major natural reservoir of hantaviruses, which cause two main human zoonoses, haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) in Eurasia and hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS) in the Americas. Surveillance of hantaviruses in rodents plays an important role in the prevention and control of HFRS and HPS. In this study, small mammals were captured in an HFRS-endemic region, Luxi County within the Yunnan Province of China, from the autumn of 2009 to the spring of 2010, and assessed for the presence of hantaviruses. A high ratio of hantavirus infection was detected in the Yunnan red-

New species of Arostrilepis (Eucestoda: Hymenolepididae) in members of Cricetidae and Geomyidae (Rodentia) from the western Nearctic.

Abstract : Specimens originally identified as Arostrilepis horrida from the Nearctic are revised, contributing to the recognition of a complex of cryptic species distributed across the Holarctic region. Previously unrecognized species are described based on specimens in cricetid (Neotominae) and geomyid rodents. Arostrilepis mariettavogeae n. sp. in Peromyscus californicus from Monterey County, California and Arostrilepis schilleri n. sp. in Thomomys bulbivorus from Corvallis, Oregon are characterized. Consistent with recent studies defining diversity in the genus, form, size, and spination (p

Beyond the laboratory: the bank vole (Clethrionomys glareolus) as a novel model organism in biological research.

Rodents constitute a significant proportion of mammalian diversity, with their adaptability and wide distribution making them indispensable study organisms across various biological disciplines. While the laboratory mouse remains a predominant model rodent, the bank vole (Clethrionomys glareolus) offers a unique perspective as a wild rodent within the large subfamily Arvicolinae. Recognized for its relevance to studynatural ecology, the bank vole provides insights into complex ecological interactions, evolutionary adaptations, and disease dynamics. Despite recent recognition of its importance

Phylogeography of Trichuris populations isolated from different Cricetidae rodents.

The phylogeography of Trichuris populations (Nematoda) collected from Cricetidae rodents (Muroidea) from different geographical regions was studied. Ribosomal DNA (Internal Transcribed Spacers 1 and 2, and mitochondrial DNA (cytochrome c- oxidase subunit 1 partial gene) have been used as molecular markers. The nuclear internal transcribed spacers (ITSs) 1 and 2 showed 2 clear-cut geographical and genetic lineages: one of the Nearctic region (Oregon), although the second was widespread throughout the Palaearctic region and appeared as a star-like structure in the minimum spanning network. Molecular Evolution and Zoonotic Potential of Muju Virus (Orthohantavirus puumalaense) in Craseomys regulus, Republic of Korea.

Orthohantavirus puumalaense causes hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome in Europe, with Puumala virus (PUUV) as its primary representative. Muju virus (MUJV), harbored by Craseomys regulus, an Arvicolinae rodent species endemic to the Republic of Korea (ROK), is also a genotype of O. puumalaense. However, their genomic diversity and zoonotic potential remain largely unknown. To investigate their prevalence, 185 voles were collected from 23 regions of the ROK between 2012 and 2023. Serological assays detected anti-PUUV immunoglobulin G antibodies in five samples (3.1%), whereas reverse-transcr

Combining information from surveys of several species to estimate the probability of freedom from Echinococcus multilocularis in Sweden, Finland and mainland Norway.

BACKGROUND: The fox tapeworm Echinococcus multilocularis has foxes and other canids as definitive host and rodents as intermediate hosts. However, most mammals can be accidental intermediate hosts and the larval stage may cause serious disease in humans. The parasite has never been detected in Sweden, Finland and mainland Norway. All three countries require currently an anthelminthic treatment for dogs and cats prior to entry in order to prevent introduction of the parasite. Documentation of freedom from E. multilocularis is necessary for justification of the present import requirements. METH

Chromosome-level genome of the bank vole (Clethrionomys glareolus): a resource for eco-evo-disease research.

The increasing availability of reference genomes for non-traditional model species is enhancing research in ecology and evolution. Here, we present a high-quality chromosome-level genome assembly and annotation for the bank vole Clethrionomys glareolus, an emerging model mammal. The 2.24 Gb assembly is resolved into 28 chromosome-scale scaffolds, consistent with the known karyotype of the species. We predicted 40,393 gene loci, including 21,029 protein-coding genes supported by Swiss-Prot homology. Repetitive elements account for approximately 29% of the genome. The assembly achieves a 90.6% B
