Anisakis (Nematoda: Ascaridoidea) from Indonesia.

Despite Indonesia's high marine biodiversity, there is a lack of information regarding fish parasites in Indonesian waters. During a sampling of 136 teleost species from Indonesian waters, 22 of them were infected with larvae of Anisakis Dujardin, 1845, a genus with zoonotic potential. We genetically identified 118 worms, provide a revision of all available sequences of the ITS-1-5.8S-ITS-2 marker from Indonesian Anisakis in GenBank (n = 125), and establish 16 new host records. So far, 53 Indonesian teleosts harbour Anisakis spp., 32 of them with known sequence data, increasing the worldwide t

Species of Typhlophoros von Linstow, 1906 (Nematoda: Ascaridoidea) in Old World crocodilians.

A new species of the genus Typhlophoros von Linstow, 1906, T. spratti, is described from the freshwater crocodile Crocodylus johnstoni and the saltwater crocodile C. porosus in northern Australia. Specimens of the new species could not be compared with the type-species, T. lamellaris, as no preserved specimens of the latter species are known to exist. The new species differs from the descriptions of von Linstow (1906) and Maplestone (1930) in the number of interlabial ridges, the form of the ventriculus and absence of lateral alae. The taxonomic status and affinities of Typhlophoros are discus

Urticaria and silent parasitism by Ascaridoidea: Component-resolved diagnosis reinforces the significance of this association.

Urticaria remains a major problem in terms of aetiology, investigation, and management, and although parasitic diseases are considered potential causes, the absence of a consistent link between parasitic infections and skin allergy symptoms leads to the need for a deeper study of parameters that support this association. The objectives of this study were to analyse a possible relationship between parasitism by Ascarididae (Toxocara canis and Anisakis simplex) and the clinical expression of urticaria and to identify possible parasitic molecular markers for improving the diagnosis of unknown urt

Studies on the development and chemotherapy of larvae of Parascaris equorum (Nematoda: Ascaridoidea) in experimentally and naturally infected foals.

Experimentally induced infections of Parascaris equorum in worm-free pony foals required 14 to 17 days for migration of the larvae through the liver and lungs, and 79 to 110 days to become gametogenically functional. Treatment of experimentally infected or naturally exposed foals during the parenteral phase of development, using levamisole at 8 mg/kg, a mixture of levamisole at 8 mg/kg plus piperazine at 88 mg base equivalent/kg, or dl-tetramisole at 10 mg/kg, was quite efficacious in (1) reducing the number of P. equorum larvae recovered from the small intestines of the foals at necropsy, or

HISTOPATHOLOGY OF GASTRIC WALL IN CHINESE ALLIGATOR ALLIGATOR SINENSIS INFECTED WITH ORTLEPPASCARIS SINENSIS (NEMATODA: ASCARIDOIDEA).

Crocodiles are susceptible to infection with a wide array of external and internal gastrointestinal helminths, yet little is known on the histopathology following infection or the effects of these parasites. The present study was aimed at evaluating the impact of infection by Ortleppascaris sinensis (Nematoda: Ascaridoidea) on the stomach of captive Alligator sinensis. The histological examination of the stomach revealed presence of superficial ulcer in mucous layer and granulomatous inflammation in submucous layer at entire gastric walls of the Alligator sinensis. Occurrence of Hysterothylacium and Anisakis nematodes (Ascaridida: Ascaridoidea) in the tanaka's snailfish Liparis tanakae (Gilbert & Burke) (Scorpaeniformes: Liparidae).

The tanaka's snailfish Liparis tanakae (Gilbert & Burke) (Scorpaeniformes: Liparidae) is an economically important marine fish species in China. However, the helminth parasites of this fish are still poorly known. During a helminthological survey of Chinese marine fishes from 2011 to 2012, we revealed that L. tanakae was heavily infected with third-stage larvae and adults of ascaridoid nematodes (total prevalence 100% and mean intensity 82.3 nematodes per fish). Four species of third-stage larvae Hysterothylacium liparis Li, Xu & Zhang, 2007, H. aduncum (Rudolphi, 1802), Hysterothylacium fabri

"Spring rise" of whaleworm (Anisakis simplex; Nematoda, Ascaridoidea) third-stage larvae in some fish species from Norwegian waters.

The seasonal variation in the infection of saithe (Pollachius virens), cod (Gadus morhua), and redfish (Sebastes marinus) from a coastal area of central Norway with Anisakis simplex third-stage larvae (L3) was studied over a period of 1 year. In all three host species there was an increase in the abundance of the parasite in spring, with a peak appearing in March and April. Cod displayed the most distinct seasonal variation, showing a clear abundance peak in April. The abundance peak in April for redfish was not as pronounced. In saithe the abundance over the seasons was less prominent, with a

An in vitro study of lipid preference in whaleworm (Anisakis simplex, Nematoda, Ascaridoidea, Anisakidae) third-stage larvae.

The behavioural response of nematodes to chemical stimuli has been extensively investigated in some free-living and plant parasitic species. However, in animal parasitic species, little is yet known, particularly in regards to marine forms such as the whaleworm (Anisakis simplex). Previous studies showed that A. simplex L3-larvae tend to prefer fish tissue with high lipid content. The intention of this study was to investigate the behaviour of A. simplex L3 in response to different concentrations of fish lipid in further detail. This was done by an in vitro study based on larvae from cod (Gadu

Baylisascaris transfuga (Ascaridoidea, Nematoda) from European brown bear (Ursus arctos) causing larva migrans in laboratory mice with clinical manifestation.

Due to the recent recovery of brown bear populations in Central Europe, information about their ascarid parasite, Baylisascaris transfuga is necessary as the parasite represents a part of natural ecological networks. B. transfuga can lead to larva migrans syndrome in accidental hosts, but its zoonotic potential has not been confirmed. The resent study compares development of larva migrans in infected mice inoculated with two infectious doses (ID 200 and ID 2000) of B. transfuga embryonated eggs, and the clinical manifestation to evaluate the pathogenicity of the larvae. Histopathology revealed

Growth and structural features of the adult stage of Ascaris suum (Nematoda, Ascaridoidea) from experimentally infected domestic pigs.

For studying the morphogenesis of the adult stage of Ascaris suum, worms were obtained from experimentally infected domestic pigs. Structural and morphometric features of A. suum are analyzed by light and scanning electron microscopy. It was shown that the increase in length of the worm from days 35 to 56 is based on a region-specific lengthening of individual transverse annuli in the cuticle. An increased worm size also results in an increased diameter of different cuticular sense organs. It is shown that a pair of lateral midbody papillae, the centrids, are prominent sensilla in the adult ma

The life cycle of Contracaecum osculatum (Rudolphi, 1802) sensu stricto (Nematoda, Ascaridoidea, Anisakidae) in view of experimental infections.

Hatched, ensheathed third-stage larvae of Contracaecum osculatum, 300-320 microns long, were shown to be infective to copepods, to nauplius larvae of Balanus and to small specimens of fishes (sticklebacks, O-group eelpout). Other fishes such as gobies and small flatfishes became infected by ingesting infected crustaceans. Cod were infected by being given infected small fishes. In the crustacean paratenic hosts, little growth of the larvae occurred, if any. In the liver sinusoids of sticklebacks and gobies the length of most of the unencapsulated third-stage larvae had not even doubled within 6

Changes in the somatic musculature of the 4th-stage larvae of Ascaris suum Goeze, 1782 (Nematoda: Ascaridoidea) developing in swine.

Fourth-stage larvae of Ascaris suum, recovered from piglets at 11-22 days post-infection (p.i.), were examined by light microscopy for changes in the somatic musculature. During this time the estimated total number of muscle cells in the body increases from approximately 600 to 21 000 cells. This non-eutelic development appears to occur by division of platymyarian muscle cells into coelomyarian cells, thereby increasing the number of muscle cells/quadrant from 5 to 85. The incompleteness of these divisions results in sarcoplasmic connections among muscle cells, and between muscle cells and ner

Description, microhabitat selection and infection patterns of sealworm larvae (Pseudoterranova decipiens species complex, nematoda: ascaridoidea) in fishes from Patagonia, Argentina.

BACKGROUND: Third-stage larvae of the Pseudoterranova decipiens species complex (also known as sealworms) have been reported in at least 40 marine fish species belonging to 21 families and 10 orders along the South American coast. Sealworms are a cause for concern because they can infect humans who consume raw or undercooked fish. However, despite their economic and zoonotic importance, morphological and molecular characterization of species of Pseudoterranova in South America is still scarce. METHODS: A total of 542 individual fish from 20 species from the Patagonian coast of Argentina were
